Sérgio Costa(I)
- Production Designer
- Art Department
- Art Director
Sergio Costa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1963.
For as long as he could remember, he decided that his existence would be lived through Art.
His choices have always taken him to work on artistic activities and their production. He began to professionalise this with a Degree in Art history from Lisbon University, in 1986; and then with short courses of study in Portuguese Middle Ages painting and Art history, in 1987.
In his early years he began painting and sculpting, and showed his work in individual and collective exhibitions.
He had an Art gallery; became a Costume designer, designing several wardrobes for individuals, shows and industry collections; and simultaneously, started to work in Interior design, designing shops, and some of Lisbon's most fashionable bars and discotheques; until finally becoming a Set designer in 1991.
Production design involved it all; everything he had done before.
In production design, he discovered that he could use and work with spaces and scales, interiors or exteriors, colours and textures; could create ageing and time, paint or sculpture; and make clothes, fabric or patterned wallpapers. This, plus the process of organizing and directing, working with costs and restrictions, and taking decisions that would change the final product, created a world of possibilities.
There, at the end of his derivations, he had found what he wanted to do.
He said, 'My curiosity always took me to my next move; I never made many plans, just followed the will to explore and achieve, and used my studies to support my natural abilities.'
In 2005 he took a position as Executive producer for a big Set production company, and for 3 years developed large scale international projects for Museums, Exhibitions, Movie and Tv sets.
Working on movie sets developed his need to learn more about project elaboration and presentation, so he decided to study architecture, 3d and 2d Autocad, Maya and SketchUp.
He completed his Degree in Architecture, at Lisbon University in 2008, and the 1st year of a Masters in Museology/Museography, at Lisbon Art school, in 2010.
Since 1992, having discovered and rediscovered his true passion - Set design, Art direction, and Production design - he has spent the subsequent years designing Movie sets, Advertising sets, Music videos, Exhibitions, Museum spaces, temporary commercial spaces, shops, and apartments.
