The upcoming Harry Potter series is one of the most anticipated projects, especially as it's been teased as a more "faithful adaptation" of J.K. Rowling's book series. With few details about the upcoming version, the series is expected to feature an all-new cast.
With only one character officially confirmed, John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, and two more in negotiations, Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape, the anticipation is growing. Many original stars, including lead actor Daniel Radcliffe, have teased that they will not be a part of the new series, but others have shown an interest in coming back. One of them is Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, who told Us Weekly he'd love to play "any character" in the upcoming series.

Though it has certainly built an enormous audience, there are many things that Harry Potternever attempted to do. Among them was to depict a more morally ambiguous world. Though several members of House Slytherin did redeem themselves, the Dark Lord Voldemort was little more than a black-and-white villain.
Yet, despite seemingly having such a thin personality, there is some significant depth to Voldemort. Unfortunately, the movies did not have the time to showcase every element of his backstory. Some elements were even outright changed. As a consequence, some major details about Voldemort were only made apparent to book readers.

Cillian Murphy is part of the new generation of successful Irish actors, so it would make sense to be up for a role in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series. The original film series boasted a series of highly esteemed British and Irish actors, and the series might continue the trend with the new generation.
The Harry Potter series is expected to start filming in the summer of 2025, although no official casting announcement came at the time of writing. There have been several fan castings and rumors, but Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't confirmed anything. As the filming date gets closer, the rumors get more serious and, per industry scooper Daniel Richtman, Cillian Murphy is being "eyed to play Professor Quirinus Quirrell in the Harry Potter show."

The Harry Potterbooks became a phenomenon for a reason. The whimsy, the magic, and the ever-changing world made for a fantasy book that was as relatable as it was fun. An entire generation of readers had the privilege of growing up with Harry. Even more had the chance to see him grow on the silver screen.
Unfortunately, even with nearly 20 hours of footage, the movies could not quite depict everything that was in the original books. Entire scenes, character arcs, and stories were completely stripped. While it is disappointing to see them so thoroughly removed, there were...

By the time Ralph Fiennes joined the Harry Potter film series in 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the actor already had two Academy Award nominations. At the same time, by 2005, the franchise was already a major hit.
Voldemort is Harry Potter's biggest villain and his story casts a shadow over every installment. In the first film he was played by Richard Bremmer as he was stuck to the back of Professor Quirrell's head, and Christian Coulson played a younger Voldemort in Chamber of Secrets. Imagine this: a world where the dark arts aren’t just a tale told by wizards in cloaks. Where the infamous dark lord, Lord Voldemort, isn’t played by Ralph Fiennes, but by someone whose cheekbones could cut glass and whose acting chops could shatter them. That someone is none other than James McAvoy.

And then the world of Harry Potter could’ve looked very different. McAvoy, with his impeccable ability to play characters with a lot of shades of gray (both literally and figuratively), once had the chance to don the robes of one of the most infamous villains in literary history. But he turned it down. Yes, the man who’s fought mutants, navigated a fractured mind, and faced ancient gods, said ‘no’ to step into the shoes of the most infamous dark wizard ever.
But why would he turn down such an opportunity?...

While the Harry Potter movies have been a cult classic franchise and an element of nostalgia for fans, there’s no denying that Potterheads are somewhat sore from the fact that the movies scrapped a few of the essential aspects from the novels. But thankfully, now that HBO is planning on a TV reboot of J.K. Rowling’s magical story, there seems to be hope for salvation.

Potterheads seem to be armed with a list of important plots that were previously left out of the movies. One among them is the origin story of Lord Voldemort, which not only explains the tragedy of the Gaunt family but also rationalizes the cause behind the Dark Lord’s sociopathy. Therefore, based on fans’ eagerness for this plot, HBO should vehemently include it in the potential TV series.

Ralph Fiennes played Voldemort in many of the villain's most iconic scenes, but many fans might not be aware of the first actor who played Voldemort in Harry Potter. Voldemort's movie debut was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, although Fiennes didn't play him in the first Harry Potter movie. In fact, Fiennes wasn't cast as Voldemort until the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. With such a prominent role in the Harry Potter story being recast, many viewers wonder who played Voldemort first and why they didn't return to play him again in later Harry Potter movies.

The Harry Potter movies feature a large ensemble cast, and smaller roles outside of the main characters afforded many actors the opportunity to be part of the magical world. For some performers, their first audition for a part in the franchise didn't lead anywhere, allowing them a more prominent role later on. This was the case with Eddie Redmayne, who would take on the leading role of Newt Scamander in the spinoff film series Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Though the Fantastic Beasts 4 movie is canceled, this doesn't make Redmayne's part of the franchise any less significant.
While Scamander doesn't play a large role in the original books and movies, his legacy is present in the way magic works in the series. Though Fantastic Beasts is over, the upcoming HBO TV show that will adapt the Harry Potter books has the opportunity to delve even further into the universe's lore.

Audiences familiar with J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World have at least once dreamed of being a part of the Harry Potter universe. Strolling through the enchanted corridors of Hogwarts, casting spells, every other Potterhead has once aspired to be a wizard with their own Sorting Hat moment. For the Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, that moment came long before he became the gentle magizoologist Newt Scamander, in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Once a hopeful young actor dreaming of donning a wand, Eddie Redmayne had auditioned to play the sinister Tom Riddle—a character completely opposite to his Hufflepuff role. But sadly, his initial attempts vanished faster than a Disappearing Spell, since fate had planned for Redmayne to find himself embraced by the magical creatures of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

James McAvoy is no stranger to movie franchises, having played Professor Charles Xavier in four X-Men prequel films and also Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. However, McAvoy nearly joined two other major properties, Star Trek and Harry Potter. The latter of which would have had him playing the young version of one of cinema's most iconic villains.

Each Voldemort actor in the Harry Potter franchise portrayed different stages of the dark wizard's life and transformations. The evolution of Voldemort's character required different actors to show various versions from childhood to full power. With the Harry Potter universe getting a reboot, more performers will join the list of Voldemort actors in the future.
Every Lord Voldemort actor throughout the Harry Potter movies and beyond has had a certain purpose in bringing the evil wizard to life. Initially spoken of in hushed tones only, Harry Potter introduces the legend of Voldemort in its very first book, depicting a dark, fearsome wizard who terrorized the magic world, only to be defeated while attempting to kill a young Harry Potter. That led to various versions of Voldemort appearing throughout the franchise, meaning seven actors played He Who Must Not Be Named in various movies.

A licensed therapist analyzes a Tom Riddle flashback scene in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, pointing out a red flag involving the character hurting animals, which is a sign of psychopathy. In the scene, Riddle is also constantly thinking about ways he can take advantage of others. The therapist argues that Dumbledore shouldn't have invited Riddle to Hogwarts after seeing this behavior. While more flashback scenes could have further fleshed out Voldemort/ Tom Riddle as a character, the few scenes that are present have depth and don't come at the expense of narrative pacing.

Tom Blyth plays young Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes — a role previously portrayed by Donald Sutherland in the original movies — and has been praised for his performance. Young Coriolanus Snow's appearance, complexity, and resonance are essential for the prequel to be successful, similar to Tom Riddle's flashback scenes in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Blyth's casting as young Coriolanus Snow is key to evoking support and sympathy for the despised character, setting up the prequel for success.

The Harry Potter franchise seems to be dormant at the moment, as the fourth installment of Fantastic Beasts isn't currently in development. Still, with such a popular story, there is always a possibility of more content being made in the future.
Few franchises could reach the level of success and define the career of their actors in the way that Harry Potter has. A part in even one of the movies could spearhead someone's career or break it. But in a highly-selective process, not all the actors who tried to join the cast also made it.
Joseph Morgan

David Yates' 2016 film "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" was, true to its title, an odd duck. Set in the same universe as the "Harry Potter" movies, but taking place decades before the title character was born, "Fantastic Beasts" attempted to expand what audiences knew about wizards and witches through the eyes of a humble cryptozoologist.
Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is a mild-mannered animal enthusiast who treks to the United States in the early 1920s in order to, essentially, capture and study rare breeds of Pokémon and write a soon-to-be-standard textbook on them. J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series is responsible for getting an entire generation of kids to read. The "Wizarding World" steadily transformed into an expansive universe that claimed fans across the globe. The success of "Harry Potter" is nothing short of miraculous.
The series would not have been nearly as popular if it wasn't for the pivotal casting decisions made for the first film. Casting young actors for any role isn't easy but deciding on the leads for a franchise that will span a decade is almost unthinkable. However, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson couldn't have been more perfect for their roles as Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The audience got to grow up with these characters as the actors matured.
As the characters grew up, the films became darker. Harry and his friends are forced to stand against evil and oppression when the Dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) rises to power.

It’s a much more serious movie than I expected it to be. It’s still not quite the movie that it mentions occasionally (Twilight) but it’s perhaps closer to this type of film.

Though all seven books have already been used up, there’s always talk of there potentially being more Harry Potter movies down the line. After all, J.K. Rowling did co-write The Cursed Child stage play, which extends the story of the Boy (now Man) Who Lived. Ralph Fiennes, star of the original movies, doesn’t think any more are likely to happen, but if they do, he has one message to other actors: hands off Lord Voldemort.
ComicBook.com caught up with Fiennes at New York Comic-Con and asked him about the possibility of more Potter on the big screen. As part of his answer, the British star made clear that he wants to be the one to get the call to come back and play Harry’s nose-less nemesis.

"It's nobody's fault. And everybody's responsibility." Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie "surreal mystery" drama titled The Rainbow Experiment, which first premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival (the anti-Sundance fest that takes place at the same time/place) at the beginning of this year. My biggest takeaway from Christina Kallas’ The Rainbow Experiment is that teachers really don’t get paid enough in this country. Think about new technologies, entitled parents, emotionally confused kids with no outlet, and dwindling budgets forcing them to spend out-of-pocket for resources all while a guillotine hangs above their necks if grade thresholds aren’t met. Suddenly those idealistic educators hoping to change the world find themselves caught in a futile game wherein job security becomes paramount at the children’s expense. Everyone’s back is pressed against the wall as a ticking time bomb threatens to explode … and I’m not even talking about the possibility of someone walking in with a loaded arsenal and grudge to bear. Has today’s stress increased or are we simply too close to it?
Look at the kids too because they have it just as bad. Bullying is no longer isolated...

Google the words “rainbow experiment chemistry” and the internet will provide a wealth of seemingly kid-friendly directives for how to use science to “make a rainbow,” an idea that seems fun enough until another link pops up: a safety alert from the American Chemical Society about an experiment gone very, very wrong.
It’s that sort of tension — between the possibility of academic discovery and out-and-out terror — that frames up Christina Kallas’ Slamdance drama, “The Rainbow Experiment,” which follows what happens after one of those eponymous experiments leads to unexpected consequences, one that indict and unravel whole scores of people and institutions.

On August 16, 2013, I finished the first draft of my second feature film, “Bite Me.” Today, on August 12, 2017, four years and 48 drafts later, I am riding the subway to our first day of production. But the story I am telling begins far earlier and, with any luck, will last far longer.
I have this memory that still guts me when I think about it today. I’m sitting in a movie theater as a middle-schooler and watching “The Princess Diaries.” I’m not sure if you remember that film, but at the beginning the central character played by a young Anne Hathaway is supposed to be a mega-nerd. To indicate the depths of her social pariah-hood, they made Anne wear glasses and frizzed her hair out a bit. But, if you’ve ever seen Anne Hathaway, you can probably imagine that, even in this state, she still, you know, looked like Anne Hathaway.

The Changeling Written by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley Directed by Jesse Berger Red Bull Theater at the Lucille Nortel Theatre, NYC December 26, 2015-January 24, 2016
Ushering in the New Year, Red Bull Theater brings us a tragic tale of sex in payment for murder. Jesse Berger sure-handedly directs Thomas Middleton and William Rowley's 1622 tragicomedy The Changeling, the main plot of which introduces the noble Beatrice-Joanna (Sara Topham) as she finds a "giddy turning" in herself from Alonzo de Piracqo (John Skelley), to whom her father, Vermandero (Sam Tsoutsouvas), intends her to be married, towards Alsemero (Christian Coulson). In order to "change [her] saint," she eventually enlists the aid of her father's servant De Flores (Manoel Feliciano), whom she professes to abhor and whose skin condition suggests a spatter of blood across his face, to remove the obstacle that is Alonzo.

Casting Harry Potter had to have been a little bit like playing Russian Roulette. You’re bringing in a group of largely untested child actors, and praying to the Cinema God that not only will they commit to an eight film series, but that they’ll grow into talented individuals and not get beaten by an ugly stick on their way through puberty. They dodged a bullet with the main trio, with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint all turning out perfectly fine. They’ve got good heads on their shoulders and seem remarkably mature in their ability to pick roles that will work for them as adults.
But what about the rest of the cast? Because they weren’t just casting Harry, Ron, and Hermione — they had a school full of students to fill. So what happens to the actors who are part of such a huge franchise,...

"When you live with people, you know them better than you care to." Sony Pictures Classics has finally debuted the trailer for Ira Sachs' Love is Strange, starring Alfred Molina & John Lithgow as a couple together for 39 years. It really is a beautiful, tender, moving film, which is exactly what I'm quoted saying in the trailer (from this review). While it's very timely in its presentation of an elderly gay couple struggling with society, it's very timeless in the way it talks about love, and how much love always shines through and can teach great lessons. The supporting cast includes Marisa Tomei, Cheyenne Jackson, Charlie Tahan and Christian Coulson. I really love the film and want to support it as much as I can, happy to share this trailer. Carmen Ejogo is in talks to play Martin Luther King Jr.'s wife Coretta Scott King in the upcoming biopic Selma.
David Oyelowo is set to play Martin Luther King Jr., with Tom Wilkinson starring as U.S. President Lyndon Johnson in this drama that details the 1965 march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol of Montgomery where African-American citizens tried to secure their voting rights, only to be beaten back by the police. It took three attempts for the rally to get off the ground, because the marcher's numbers kept increasing each time. Coretta Scott King, who married Martin Luther King Jr. in 1956, was a part of the march with her husband during the Selma Voting Rights Movement.
Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere) is directing from a script she co-wrote with Paul Webb. Lee Daniels had once been attached to direct, but he is no longer involved in the project.

I had planned to see Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me last Thursday afternoon, but it was playing the tiny theatre at Alamo Ritz and of course filled up with badges before we folks with passes or ticketbuyers could get in.
