Warrens Face Their Final Demon in ‘The Conjuring: The Last Rites’
Image
After more than a decade of demonic encounters, exorcisms and box office dominance, The Conjuring franchise is preparing to close the case on its most enduring characters. The Conjuring: The Last Rites will see Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return for one final appearance as Ed and Lorraine Warren, bringing the curtain down on a series that has helped redefine mainstream horror since its debut in 2013.

Directed by Michael Chaves, The Last Rites takes place in 1986, several years after the Warrens’ retirement. When the Smurl family in Pennsylvania finds themselves terrorised by a malevolent presence, Ed and Lorraine are drawn back into the shadows for one last investigation. While previous entries often centred around isolated hauntings, this instalment is being framed as a more introspective reckoning for the couple, delving into their legacy, faith and the emotional cost of a life spent confronting darkness.

The film will also expand the Warren family circle.

But in this trailer, we find out that the demon was one the Warrens previously encountered. “There’s something in the attic. Ed, there’s an evil here. Something I’ve felt before,” Lorraine says.

“This thing in your house is a demon. It’s the first one that we’ve ever encountered,” Lorraine says to the family before later saying to Ed, “We were young. We were scared.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law producer on the approach to a potential season 2
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law debuted on the Disney+ streaming service in August of 2022, wrapping up its nine episode run that October. The door was left wide open for further She-Hulk adventures, but earlier this year, star Tatiana Maslany said she didn’t think there would be a second season because they “blew their budget.” But Maslany is an expert at the secrecy game, having spread misinformation about the show before it aired and even flat-out denying that she had been cast when news of her involvement first leaked online, so we can’t take her word on these things. Looking to find out whether or not there will be a She-Hulk: Attorney at Law season 2, ComicBook.com turned to the show’s executive producer Wendy Jacobson. She couldn’t say for sure, but she did share ideas on how they could approach the material if...

'I Would Love To Explore More of That:' She-Hulk Producer Open To Developing Second Season
Image
Almost two years after She-Hulk: Attorney at Law aired its first nine-episode season on Disney+, there still hasn't been a definitive announcement about a second season. However, series Wendy Jacobson believes that there's more of Jennifer Walters' story to be told.

"I don't know the answer to that question," Jacobson told ComicBook when asked to confirm if a second season was on the cards. She then explained what the series would cover if more episodes were given the green light. "What I love about She-Hulk is just kind of being in this character's everyday life. It's a woman in her thirties, trying to navigate her life and her career and her friendships, and oh, she just happens to also be able to turn into a Hulk. So, I think I would love to explore more of that."

Marvel Insider Blames She-Hulk's VFX Problems on Kevin Feige
Image
An insider is attributing the failure of Marvel's VFX work on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to the President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige.

Victoria Alonso, who oversaw the studio’s VFX and animation was fired and primarily blamed for the special effects issues at Marvel. However, according to certain insiders, there are indications that Alonso may have been unfairly made a scapegoat, with the VFX problems in She-Hulk being seen as a symptom of a lack of proper oversight during script development. In a report by Variety, an individual with direct involvement in the debacle pointed the finger at Feige, stating, that the perceived shortcomings in VFX are a result of inadequately developed scripts. The insider claimed that responsibility lies not with Alonso but with Kevin Feige and other top executives. They added that the issues needed to be addressed during the preproduction phase and the tight schedule prevented...

Emile Hirsch is a Court Stenographer in Revenge Film 'Walden' Trailer
Image
"I hear innocence, and I hear evil. Sometimes... evil walks away." Uncork'd has revealed the trailer for a film called Walden, a revenge thriller written & directed by Mick Davis. This is getting a limited theatrical release in November before heading to VOD to watch. Walden Dean, an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, he discovers he is dying. So he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution. The poster art for this has a "Dexter" vibe, which is probably what they're aiming for anyway. The "scales of justice" in blood is amusing, too. Starring Emile Hirsch as the titular Walden, with Shane West, Kelli Garner, Tania Raymonde, Steve Coulter, & David Keith. While this has a good concept, the footage looks like a made-for-tv Saturday night special presentation. Not much to worth watching here. // Continue Reading ›...

Why The Conjuring Movies Are Actually a Romance
Image
There came a moment during my screening of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It where I almost forgot I was watching a horror movie. It's the scene where Vera Farmiga's Lorraine Warren is sitting by the bedside of her husband, Ed (Patrick Wilson), who has recently suffered a demon-influenced heart attack, as she recounts the story of how they first met to their friend and colleague, Father Gordon (Steve Coulter). Rather than maintain the scene as a mere monologue, however, director Michael Chaves and writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick turn the story into its own flashback, allowing us to see the young versions of Ed and Lorraine and their incidental meeting as teenagers that quickly turned into a meet-cute the likes of which could rival any rom-com. When the two share their first kiss inside a gazebo during a surprise rainstorm, it's a scene that serves to successfully...

The Nun 2's Post-Credits Scene Explained: What Conjuring Movie It Sets Up
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Nun 2!

The Nun 2 has a mid-credits scene that teases the future of the Conjuring Universe, featuring the return of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The mid-credits scene sets up a connection between Sister Irene's story and the main Conjuring movies, but the exact meaning is unclear. The scene is part of an alternate ending from The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and likely sets up The Conjuring 4.

The Nun 2 expands the Conjuring franchise once again, but is there a post-credits scene teasing what else could come? The ninth installment of the Conjuring Universe is the second in the prequel franchise The Nun started in 2018. The Nun 2 brings back familiar characters to battle the Demon Nun known as Valak and tells a mostly self-contained story. Since the 2023 horror movie is part of an established franchise, though, connections to the existing...

‘Insidious: The Red Door’ Review: Franchise’s Latest Creeps Further Away From Original
Image
Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth installment of the Insidious franchise and helmed by actor-turned-director Patrick Wilson, promises a dive into the haunted memories of the past, but the script by Scott Teems delivers little more than a stifling yawn. Alongside Wilson, the film stars Ty Simpkins, Rose Bryne and Sinclair Daniel.

The film begins where Insidious 2 concluded, with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his suppressed memories of “The Further.” It then abruptly shifts to the solemn setting of the funeral of Josh’s mother, Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey in previous films). While Dalton (Simpkins), Josh’s oldest son, reads from Scripture, the estranged Josh and Renai (Bryne) and other siblings wrestle with their loss. Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh’s memories, highlights the depths of Josh’s amnesia.

In this grief-stricken state,...
