The New Luxury Menswear: Made-to-Measure Casual Clothes
Image
No one in my building wears suits anymore,” says a very well-dressed senior executive at a big agency, when asked if he still gets his suits made. But the trend away from more structured, tailored clothing and toward smarter casual wear hasn’t lessened the desire for having one’s clothes made to measure. In fact, it’s opened up a whole new arena for menswear enthusiasts, with a crop of shops in L.A. ready to make not only a well-fitting custom suit but everything you’d want to wear — from a pair of perfectly cut five-pocket pants to a creamy-to-the-touch vicuña wool shirt jacket — just for you.

Thom Sweeney, the British menswear brand founded by two Savile Row-trained tailors, Thom Whiddett and Luke Sweeney, recently opened an L.A. flagship at 8401 Melrose Place, Thom Sweeney Loft. It’s an airy, open space designed by Billy Cotton, complete with...

British Menswear Brand Thom Sweeney Shows David Duchovny’s “Weekend in the Life”
Image
Ever wonder how David Duchovny spends his weekends?

Thom Sweeney answers that question with a new campaign featuring the veteran star for spring-summer 2024. The brand — known for contemporary tailored menswear with outposts in London, New York and a new location in Los Angeles — highlights how Duchovny spends a “weekend in the life” in London, the launch location for Thom Sweeney.

He wakes up, sips some water followed by an espresso, does a little writing and ducks out to explore the city while wearing a variety of Thom Sweeney pieces. At one point, he relaxes in the park in a copper bomber jacket, and in another moment, he’s strolling the city’s streets in a light-colored suit. Duchovny eventually finds his way inside a Thom Sweeney store to be fitted for a navy, double-breasted look but rather than hit up a red carpet, he sticks around the shop to shoot some pool.

Bill Pertwee obituary
Actor best known for playing the officious Arp warden William Hodges in Dad's Army

In his early days as a cabaret artist, the actor Bill Pertwee, who has died aged 86, did a manic cricket revue sketch at a fashionable club in central London. A haughty and inebriated diner kicked over his stumps and shouted: "How's that?" Pertwee punched him in the stomach and was escorted out by the head waiter, who informed him that the customer was always right. "As far as I'm concerned, he isn't!" retorted Pertwee.

This bubbling belligerence was successfully incorporated into the bossy character that made Pertwee famous: Arp Warden William Hodges in the celebrated BBC television series Dad's Army (1968-77), written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft. As Hodges, he perpetually clashed with Captain George Mainwaring (Arthur Lowe) of the Home Guard.

The inspiration for the way Pertwee played the warden came from his boyhood during the second world war,...

Eddie Braben, Morecambe and Wise writer, dies aged 82
Legendary comic writer Eddie Braben, who worked with acts such as Morecambe and Wise, Ken Dodd and Ronnie Corbett, has died aged 82.

Braben's manager Norma Farnes confirmed that the writer had died this morning (May 21).

In a statement, Farnes said: "The writer Eddie Braben, the third man behind the success of Morecambe and Wise, died this morning at the age of 82 after a short illness.

"It was Billy Cotton Jnr at the BBC who recognised the brilliance of Eddie's writing was the ideal marriage that would guarantee the success of Morecambe and Wise.

"He is survived by his loving wife Dee, three children and six grandchildren."

Braben started working with Morecambe and Wise in 1969 and was regarded as a key member of their writing team and one of the most gifted comic talents of his era.

In recent years, the writer has revealed how he suffered from stress and nerves...

Asna Wiseman obituary
Not many entertainers are still treading the boards at 94 but my aunt Asna Wiseman was that age when she was invited back by popular demand by the Jewish Orthodox Women's Variety Show to perform in their annual showcase at Logan Hall, in London, in 2005. Asna, who has died aged 101, was the star turn and topped the bill.

She was born Asna Millie Swerdlow in Glasgow to Jewish immigrants, Alexander and Rene, and grew up in Falkner Street, Liverpool, with her five brothers, Harry, Leon, David, Matthew and Mitchell. In her early teens, Asna was a keen and talented dancer. She convinced her family that she should leave home to seek work as a professional dancer and singer; it was unusual in those days for a young girl to leave her family and the close-knit community.

Asna took the stage name Anita Lowe and soon, with the nickname The Mighty Atom,...

Master of Puppets
Bjarne Melgaard: A New Novel by Bjarne Melgaard Luxembourg & Dayan Through December 22, 2012   I open one eye. Sunlight pours in through my Zaha Hadid-designed venetian blinds, casting horizontal shadows on the walls, turning the room into a recumbent prison cell. I was supposed to meet James Franco (who is still a little sore at me for beating him out for the part of Cocktimus Prime in Sue de Beer's hardcore version of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) in Central Park an hour ago, but my Philippe Starck alarm clock (which I fully believe is haunted) failed to wake me.    I open both eyes, decide that it is probably safe, and dress quickly: black crinolined Brioni smoking jacket, Hello Kitty T-shirt, baby seal-skin pants, and boots hand-carved in Brazilian rosewood (by some guy in Tokyo, whose name is comprised entirely of consonants and who has a nine-year waiting list) which resemble small cats,...

Sykes (1972)
Eric Sykes, comedy legend: His career in videos - watch
Sykes (1972)
TV and radio comedy legend Eric Sykes has died at the age of 89. Stars have been quick to celebrate the writer and actor who worked with comic icons such as Tommy Cooper and Tony Hancock during his seven decade-long career, praising his comic talents, genius writing skills and humble and generous nature. But for those too young to remember the likes of Sykes and The Plank, here are some classic clips of Eric in action: Sykes, Hattie Jacques on the Billy Cotton Band Show

Eric and his most famous collaborator Hattie Jacques are in fine comic form in this early recording of the Band Show. Billy Cotton joins them for a comic reworking of 'I Caught Mummy Kissing Santa Claus'. Sykes and Jacques

Diana Dors: more than just the British Marilyn Monroe
Diana Dors may be famous for all those flirty, saucy one-liners, but she had a sharp, knowing wit of her own, and was more serious an actor than she gets credit for

The early 50s is remembered as an era smeared with boredom, with Billy Cotton on the wireless and rationed gruel for dinner. In such a country, the beauty and easy charm of Diana Dors must have seemed like an insult to many people.

Dors is frequently referenced as Britain's "answer" to Marilyn Monroe, but a brace of Dors's films – My Wife's Lodger (1952) and Is Your Honeymoon Really Necessary? from 1953 – set for DVD release by the BFI – show a vibrant and underrated star with a decidedly English sass. Aside from her role as a convicted murderer in Yield to the Night, it is usually assumed that her acting talent was wasted on fripperies, yet she also had hefty roles in another prison drama,...
