Danny Dyer at an event for Severance (2006)
Human Traffic review – one-crazy-night 90s clubbing comedy provides euphoric rush of nostalgia
Danny Dyer at an event for Severance (2006)
This loved-up ensemble piece is cheerfully apolitical, pro-drugs and pro-hedonism – and features a very funny film debut from Danny Dyer

A warm nostalgic glow surrounds this likably daft and zeitgeisty one-crazy-night clubbing adventure from 1999. It’s a Cool Britannia time-capsule written and directed by Justin Kerrigan, starring John Simm, Shaun Parkes, Lorraine Pilkington, Nicola Reynolds and a cherubic young Danny Dyer making his movie debut. Dyer’s character ends up down the pub moodily swearing off drugs for ever – and if we wondered how that was going to turn out, we can flashforward to his performance this year in Nick Love’s Marching Powder, in which he does much the same thing.

Human Traffic revolves around a group of gurning mates: a classic 90s ensemble of mononymous characters – Jip, Koop, Lulu, Nina and Moff – individually introduced in freeze-frame voiceover in that distinctive 90s Britmovie style, as popularised by Danny Boyle...

Techno Legend Carl Cox on Ultra Music Festival’s 25th Anniversary and His Own Evolution
Image
For four decades and counting, Carl Cox has commanded the decks at Ibiza residencies, headlined music festivals, and curated classics at underground raves. The veteran British DJ has developed a pre-show regime over the years: He eats nutrient-rich salads or fish-based dishes, drinks more water than alcohol, and occasionally clears the room for a moment of stillness. As he steps out of his air-conditioned trailer and into the broiling warehouse, teeming with sardined fans, he’s reminded why he keeps coming back. He cues up his first record, and his nerves wash away.

Calvin Harris Says He Plans to Quit DJing “Once I Get Past 50”
Image
Calvin Harris revealed that his time DJing live is eventually going to come to an end.

The music producer-songwriter, who turned 40 in January, shared in a recent interview with U.K. radio station Capital Dance that he will likely stop DJing in approximately 10 years.

“I always said that once I get past 50, I can’t see me DJing, man,” the “This Is What You Came For” artist said. But host MistaJam was quick to point out that British DJ Carl Cox is still active, doing live performances at age 61.

“It’s a certain type of DJing. On the more commercial end, it gets a wee bit… a little bit suspect,” Harris quipped.

Though Harris has brought his music all around the world, headlining some of the biggest festivals including Coachella, he shared that once he moves away from DJing, he wants to turn his focus to the studio.

“I think...

Image
Today, multi-platinum selling singer, songwriter and producer, Moby, shares In My Heart remixes from acclaimed British DJ’s Carl Cox and Paul Woolford.

In My Heart is one of 15 iconic Moby tracks written or recorded in New York between 1994 – 2010 orchestrally reworked for his recent 20th studio album Resound NYC, released through Deutsche Grammophon.

Broken Hands. Paul Woolford

On working with Carl Cox and Paul Woolford, Moby said, “‘one of my favorite things is to send multitracks of a song to legendary remixers like Paul and Carl, and then happily listen to the magic they’ve created’.”

Paul Woolford said, “I’ve been playing Moby’s records since the start in 1991 so when he asked me to rework In My Heart with Gregory Porter I immediately said yes. Furthermore, I wanted to contribute a Special Request version of the song that almost floats as a beatless ambient version, so there’s...

Why Paul Oakenfold Became the First-Ever Artist to Play Stonehenge
Paul Oakenfold
Paul Oakenfold likes to boldly DJ where no man has DJ’ed before. In 2003, he became the first person to tote turntables onto the Great Wall of China. Last year, he played a set for the sherpas and mountaineers at Everest Base Camp. And on Thursday night, as the sun set over Salisbury Plain, he performed the first DJ set ever presented at the 4,500-year-old circle of monoliths that is Stonehenge.

“No other artist has ever played there and a lot of people have tried, including the Rolling Stones,” the...

Official Trailer for 'What We Started' Music Doc Featuring DJ Carl Cox
"You want to share it with as many people as possible." Abramorama has debuted the trailer for a music documentary titled What We Started, focusing on the Edm (or Electronic Dance Music) scene. I confess I am a huge Edm fan and have been listening for many years. This doc attempts to be a definitive look at the scene and the music and the people behind it all. The documentary features heavy-weight electronic dance music artists, including the infamous young new DJ, Martin Garrix, the legendary Carl Cox, as well as appearances by Erick Morillo, Moby, David Guetta, Afrojack, Paul Oakenfold, Seth Troxler, and DJ Tiesto. There are multiple cameos from musical superstars, including Usher and Ed Sheeran, who help exemplify the power and reach that electronic dance music has over mainstream music genres. This really looks damn good, seems to be a comprehensive examination of the entire culture. I'm...

Martin Garrix Reveals His Ambitions To Cross Over Into Pop
During a recent interview with Times of India, Martin Garrix revealed that his ambitions lie far beyond the confines of dance music. The DJ, who recently took home some major awards at the MTV Ema’s, candidly discussed a range of topics in the Q&A session, talking about his role in the upcoming documentary What We Started, while offering up some insight into his creative process as well.

In the interview, Garrix explains that he wants to go the route of DJs like Calvin Harris and Avicii and make the full transition into mainstream pop. We’ve already seen the Dutch producer headed in this direction with the radio friendly “In The Name Of Love” with Bebe Rexha from earlier in the year, and it’s definitely a direction we’d like to see him explore more.

“I want to produce more number one hits but not follow trends blindly!

Review: Global Gathering 2011
When you hear the name ‘Stratford Upon Avon’, it immediately conjures up images of the beautiful English countryside; fields and fields of stunning flowers, and of course the home of William Shakespeare. However, for one weekend a year, this amazing location is transformed into one of the biggest dance music festival venues in England. As thousands of people descend onto a disused airfield a few miles outside a sleepy little town to dance the nights away in a euphoric, fun filled frenzy…this festival is of course Global Gathering.

As the weekend started, the roads leading to Long Marston Airfield were backed up for miles. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands of attendees as they all waited patiently in a queue of traffic, creeping along slowly until they finally reached the massive air field; moving quickly to unpack and pitch their tents in prime locations, ready...

Now in its seventh year, the Tomorrowland Festival kicked off again in Boom, Belgium, this past weekend, and MTV News was there for the entire spectacle.

The dance music event started small but over the years it has ballooned into one of the most popular electronic dance music fests in existence. The Tomorrowland of 2011 had a fairy-tale theme and was made up of 14 colorfully dressed stages, which included set pieces like enormous replicas of mushrooms and trees; two of the stages were even dominated by an oversize skull and a sun. Tl accommodated 30,000 campers on its "Dreamville" grounds, bringing the total draw for the weekend to upwards of 180,000, a figure that beat out Miami's Ultra Music Festival. (And...

Trainspotting brings rave to the cinema
1996: Number 30 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of dance music

Being live, collective and usually drug-enhanced, the "rave" experience has never been easy to replicate on film. But wherever there's a ramshackle youth movement, there's a clueless cash-in and, as with 60s psychedelia, Hollywood got it entertainingly wrong more often than it got it right (two words: Matrix Reloaded). Two exceptions were Doug Liman's Go (featuring Katie Holmes, Sarah Polley and Scott Wolf), which had fun with the La warehouse party scene, and Blade, whose great bloody opening (to the Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix of New Order's Confusion, trackspotters) was the last word in clubbing exclusivity. For once, the Brits knew best.

Danny Boyle's Trainspotting was ostensibly the first rave generation film, in attitude at least, though apart from Underworld's Born Slippy, the soundtrack was pretty rock-based. Instead, prime contender for...

Miami's 2011 Ultra Music Festival wraps with some heavy bass
Miami's Ultra Music Festival completed its history-making year on Sunday at the close of Miami Music Week. Throngs of dancers took part in what many returned guests longed for at Ultras in the past… an extra day, giving more time to dance.

The sold-out Ultra Music Festival is the world's largest gathering of electronic music fans. Sunday, more than a 100,000 people filed out of Bicentennial Park which was ground zero for the young, exuberant and often times sweaty dance saturated masses.

Ultra began on Friday with headliners like Tiesto, Carl Cox and Erasure commanding the attention of those in ear shot—which is arguably probably a couple of miles in diameter in Miami's downtown.

But the beat continued to pulse solid and strong all the way through Sunday's lineup. Not only did revelers enjoy their favorite hits from DJs that spun like David Guetta, Atb, Cosmic Gate, Will.I.Am,...

Chuckie, the DJ/producer behind "dirty Dutch" house hits like "Let the Bass Kick" and the popular remix of David Guetta and Akon's "Sexy Bitch," is among the growing list of electronic dance music hitmakers exporting their brand of "unst-unst" to the States. But he'll make his mark Stateside in a big way as he joins Paul Oakenfold's Facelift Tour this fall.

With a tour schedule that includes more than 50 club dates, famed veteran DJ/producer Oakenfold will lead sets, along with Chuckie, Calvin Harris, DJs/ songwriting sisters Nervo, Sydney Sampson, Roger Sanchez and others.

Chuckie has had acts as diverse as Lmfao, Jermaine Dupri and Lil Jon jump on remixes of "Let the Bass Kick," while his version (with Lil Jon) of "Sexy Bitch" is a dance-floor burner.

Winter Music Conference is in full swing in Miami this weekend. The event, which is in its 25th year, celebrates the music industry and its fans.
