Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Twisters (2024)
Twisters - Andrew Robertson - 19154
Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Twisters (2024)
Twisters joins a succession of sequels that are also plurals. Alien had Aliens, Predator would go through a few attempts before landing on Predators. Anaconda had Anacondas, and there's time yet for a singular prequel to Jaws. While of widely varying quality, and equally wide spacing, you will have noticed that these are all monster movies, some of which are differently science fictional. Twisters is more of the same.

Of the numerous callbacks and borrowings perhaps one of the most pleasing is the return of actor Darryl Cox. In the original Twister he (uncredited) played a mechanic; in the interim he had a role in director Lee Isaac Chung's Oscar-winner Minari, and in Twisters he's no longer fixing vehicles but selling them. It's a tiny part of the film, but it's one of the more satisfying comic beats. April Warren also returns, but...

James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016)
Berlin Before the Pandemic
James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016)
I am here in Berlin for six months to follow my lifelong desire to write and research family history. I had in mind going into a sort of inner exile and returning August 1 to work for the election at home, but had no notion of going into self-isolation for six months!

I thought I would take breaks to go to theater, concerts, museums and see movies…I made it to the last day of museums, going to the Neues Museum to see the Egyptian collection which included photographs taken around 1900 of an expedition to Nubia, since flooded by the Aswan Dam, and of the famous bust of the most beautiful woman in the world, Nefretiti. We heard the guard tell another that the museums would be closed as of Saturday.

I went to the Arsenal Cinema at Potsdamer Platz to see the first of a series of films on African...

“Wildlife” – Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, and Carey Mulligan: Hollywood Film Tribute
Today we are recognizing Wildlife, as well as co-writer/director Paul Dano, plus co-writer Zoe Kazan and star Carey Mulligan. Our Hollywood Film Tributes recognize films and talent for their excellence in the art of filmmaking. In a just world, Dano and Kazan’s script for Wildlife would have been a no brainer Best Adapted Screenplay nominee. The former’s directorial debut is so well written, in addition to well directed and well acted, that it 100% was deserving of a citation. From our rave of a review back in October: 2018 has been a hell of a year for actors making their directorial debuts. Bradley Cooper is obviously getting a lot of the acclaim, but don’t sleep on Paul Dano. Along with his partner Zoe Kazan, they have adapted the Richard Ford novel Wildlife, with Dano directing. The result is something spectacular. Ever since the Sundance Film Festival, the movie has been building acclaim.

Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan have captured brilliance with “Wildlife”
2018 has been a hell of a year for actors making their directorial debuts. Rightly so too, as this is one of 2018’s best works. Impeccably acted, brilliantly written, confidently directed, and full of quiet desperation, it’s rather magnificent. The film begins its theatrical run this week and is an absolute must see. Few works this year have been better. For his directorial debut, Dano has chosen Ford’s novel, which provides him ample material to explore. The film is a portrait of a family, as well as a marriage, coming apart. A period piece, we see Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal...
