Adam West's classic 1960s series wasn't the first live-action "Batman" adaptation, but it is the one most people think of when remembering the old days of the character on the screen. In the decades since, shows like "Batman: The Animated Series" and the many critically acclaimed Batman films have built the Caped Crusader into arguably the most popular superhero in the U.S., if not worldwide. But when it comes to camp and silly charm, nothing beats the '60s series.
Sadly, most of the folks who made that show what it was are no longer with us, including Adam West himself, who passed away in 2017. Other prominent co-stars like Burgess Meredith (The Penguin), Cesar Romero (The Joker), Alan Napier (Alfred), Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon), and Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) have also all passed on.

It's hard to imagine where the world of superheroes would be without the classic Batman TV series. Airing on ABC for three seasons between 1966 and 1968, the show starred Adam West and Burt Ward as the Dynamic Duo (adding Yvonne Craig to the line-up as Batgirl in its third season) and it had a meteoric rise to success during a time when superheroes weren't the heavy-hitters that they are now. It's also renowned for introducing the characters of Batman, Robin, and Batgirl to mainstream audiences, helping them transcend the genre of comic books and become pop-culture phenomenons.
West and Ward also exploded onto the big screen at the height of the show's popularity, with Batman: The Movie arriving in movie theaters between the first and second seasons. Although its popularity eventually declined, it kept the Batman franchise in the public eye for many years until its inevitable reinvention in the darker...

Let it be stated up front: William Dozier's 1966 TV series "Batman" is not just the finest iteration of Bob Kane's and Bill Finger's superhero character, but it may be one of the best TV shows of all time. Using the outlandish trappings of superhero comics, "Batman" created nothing less than the wildest, most hilarious parody of conservative values in a generation. Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) were heroic, yes, but they were also unbearably square, drinking milk, going birdwatching, and supporting their local police to an unhealthy degree. We admired them and laughed at them at the same time. The show's many villains were free agents, whose villainy offered a refreshing element of chaos to the world. They were sexual, exciting, and had fun.
All of this was wrapped in a stylized, mannered, near-cartoon universe. Reality was tilted. The show purported to support heroism, but somehow,...

Ever since its debut in the 1960s, the "Star Trek" franchise has been a beacon of social progressivism and inclusivity as its characters boldly forge ahead into the future. However, not all of its commentary and leaps forward have been met without controversy or widespread derision. For as groundbreaking as "Star Trek" is, not all of its stories have securely stuck the landing, stumbling in its handling of certain issues across its extensive history. Across the growing number of television series in the franchise, "Star Trek" has run into its fair share of controversy over the years, both with its fans and behind-the-scenes figures.
To be clear, what makes for a controversial episode isn't necessarily the episode's overall quality but the content within the episode itself. Several "Star Trek" episodes have quietly been omitted from their initial broadcasts or are noticeably edited in certain regions because of perceived sensitivities at the time.

In the "Star Trek" episode "The Empath", Captain Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are on an away mission when they are abruptly kidnapped by off-screen aliens and deposited in a mysterious, blackened chamber somewhere beneath the planet's surface. While trapped, they encounter a mute woman in purple whom McCoy names Gem (Kathryn Hays). Gem, they find, has an extraordinary superpower. When someone is injured, Gem can heal them by absorbing their wounds into herself. She feels an equal amount of pain. The wound is then healed rapidly.
Gem ends up having plenty of opportunities to use her superpowers as the four characters are repeatedly tortured by evil, large-skulled aliens called Vians (played by Alan Bergmann and Willard Sage). The Vians spend the bulk of the episode tormenting and injuring the Enterprise crew members, sometimes while Gem watches. Gem, meanwhile, offers to heal them each time,...

The original pilot of Star Trek: The Original Series began an unfortunate Star Trek trope that took the franchise more than 50 years to fix. Before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) took over as commander of the USS Enterprise, Captain Christoper Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was in command of the iconic ship. In "The Cage," Pike and his crew traveled to Talos IV, where they encountered an incredibly advanced race of aliens who could manipulate thought. The Talosians tried to convince Pike to stay, tempting him with an attractive woman.
For her part, Vina (Susan Oliver) did begin to develop feelings for Pike, and he for her, despite the interference from the Talosians. As the Talosians, Star Trek's first villains, tried to determine what kind of woman Pike wanted, they presented Vina to him in several different guises, creating realistic illusions that felt real to Pike. The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 1, "Dos Cerritos," now streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek has an informal tradition of exploring various alien species in its universe via one of its main characters. The trend goes all the way back to Mr. Spock in The Original Series, presented as the only alien in a crew of humans and serving as an audience gateway to Vulcan culture. Lt. Worf did much the same for Klingons on Star Trek: The Next Generation, as did Ferengi like Quark and Rom on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and ex-Borg Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager. The trend has served an integral role in the franchise's success, while allowing it to elegantly flesh out its lexicon through often-beloved characters.

Charles Cyphers, an actor best known for his work in the films of John Carpenter, especially his role as Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the Halloween franchise, has died. He was 85. According to his manager, Chris Roe, Cyphers passed away on Sunday, August 4, in Tucson, Arizona, after a brief illness. “Charles was an incredibly lovable and sensitive man,” Roe said in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. The statement continued, “He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you them. He was a close friend and client for over 20 years.” Born on July 28, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, Cyphers studied acting at Los Angeles City College, Cal State Los Angeles, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. The 1966 "Batman" TV series -- one of the best TV shows of all time -- wasn't shy about including shameless cameos. Early in the show's run, the producers invented an organic conceit that would allow famous people to literally poke their heads in for a moment to deliver a few lines of dialogue. While Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) were scaling the side of a building -- something they did often -- a celebrity guest would open a window to see who might be making noise on their outside wall. The series featured peek-ins from Sammy Davis, Jr., Jerry Lewis, Art Linkletter, Don Ho, and Dick Clark.
Other notable stars also provided peek-ins, but many appeared in character, playing their roles from other hip TV shows at the time. Ted Cassidy, for instance, appeared as Lurch from "The Addams Family." Werner Klemperer had a cameo as Colonel Klink from "Hogan's Heroes.

Actors from 1960s Batman crossed over into Star Trek. Batman was known for its ridiculous gadgets and comic book elements, contrasting with Star Trek's more serious tone. Actors like Yvonne Craig, Julie Newmar, and Frank Gorshin left memorable marks on both iconic shows.
The actors who portrayed Batgirl, Catwoman, and the Riddler in the 1960s Batman television series also appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series. Batman and Tos both began in 1966 and appealed to similar audiences, so it's not surprising that several actors popped up on these two shows. With its campy, humorous tone, the 1960s Batman was very different from most modern adaptations featuring the Caped Crusader. As Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) defended Gotham City, they used ridiculously named gadgets to take on villains, and comic book words like "Pow!" and "Bam!" popped up on the screen during fight scenes.

Captain Kirk, the ladies' man of Star Trek, used seduction to get his way with humans and aliens alike, but his relationships never lasted. From Marta to Dr. Taylor, Kirk had both romantic and platonic female friendships, each unique in their own way on the USS Enterprise. Kirk's charm saved the crew's life, but also led to tragic romances like with Miramanee, as he navigated love among the stars.
Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was known as a ladies' man, and he had quite a few love interests during his time on Star Trek: The Original Series. Batman almost had a crossover with Godzilla, but it never came to fruition due to various issues and the decline of the Batman TV show. Over-the-top superhero and kaiju crossovers are better suited for comic books, as modern audiences prefer more serious and relatable stories.
Between the highly decorated Godzilla: Minus One winning over moviegoers at the box office and the new Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire trailer tremendously firing up the fanbase, there is no surprise why more and more people are saying that this is a great time to be a Godzilla fan.

In the "Star Trek" episode "Whom Gods Destroy", the U.S.S. Enterprise was lured to a distant planet that hosted an advanced mental health facility built for the people who, even after being subjected to the thorough rigors of 23rd-century medicine and psychology, are still quite unhealthy. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) must match wits with one of the facility's patients, Fleet Captain Garth (Steve Ihnat), who has taken over the asylum. Among his mentally unwell servants is a woman named Marta (Yvonne Craig), an Orion dancer who attempts to stab Kirk. Craig plays the part with energy and wildness and she's a big part of why "Whom Gods Destroy" is fun to watch.
To play Marta, as seen in the photo above, Craig had to be painted almost entirely green. Her costume was a short, diaphanous tunic, so her arms, armpits, back, and legs all had to be coated in green makeup.

In 2006, CBS began the meticulous process of remastering the original "Star Trek" series for release on Blu-ray and on HD DVD (remember those?). The live-action sequences were to be seen in high-definition for the first time, and the new versions were extrapolated from surviving 35mm masters. The show's special effects were to be recreated using modern CGI techniques, as modern HD TV screens would have made the original effects stand out in an awkward way. The release of the "remastered" Treks caused some debate among Trekkies. Was it exciting to see a TV series from 1966 brushed up to look as modern as possible, or should the shoddiness of the original be maintained for reasons of aesthetic purity? Luckily, unlike the "Special Editions" of "Star Wars," both the old versions and the new versions are readily available on Blu-ray.
The debate, however, will eternally remain if it's better to watch "Star Trek...

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4, episode 4, titled "Something Borrowed, Something Green," takes place largely on the Orion homeworld, the place where Lieutenant D'Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) hails from. She is there to attend the wedding of her sister D'Erica but also to face the familial legacy she deliberately left behind when she joined Starfleet. The episode features a lot of lingering sororal resentment and multiple mysterious, violent, sexy figures from Tendi's past.
More important to Trekkies, however, are the numerous details about Orion life. "Something Borrowed" is the first time we've really had a good look at the Orions and what they're like in their element.
Orions, of course, first appeared on "Star Trek" as early as the "Original Series" pilot, "The Cage," when Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was seduced by a green-skinned woman at a Roman-style orgy.

Welcome to the 27th installment of Page One Rewrite, where I examine genre screenplays that just couldn’t make it. This week, the cancelled follow-up to 1966's Batman: The Movie, the gloriously preposterous Batman Meets Godzilla. And if you have future suggestions, please let me know on Twitter.
The Murky Origins of an Ill-Fated Crossover
Commonly known now as Batman '66, the prime-time adaptation of DC's Caped Crusader has enjoyed a cultural footprint the character can never fully escape, in spite of numerous dark and gritty revamps. ABC placed an order for Batman expecting a mostly serious drama that would appeal to younger viewers, only for producer William Dozier to embrace pop-art camp and slapstick. Adam West's overly earnest portrayal of Batman grated on hardcore Dark Knight fans' nerves for years, but is commonly viewed now as a work of comedic genius.

It's safe to say that the cultural influence of the 1966 "Batman" series peaked with the release of the 1966 feature-length spin-off movie. As detailed in "Batman: The Complete History" by Les Daniels, the series was met with declining enthusiasm when returned for a second season and was then canceled by ABC after the third season. Like the concurrently-airing "Star Trek" on NBC, "Batman" was a classic in the making, but cut short for contemporary audiences.
That's not to say the "Batman" team didn't try to save the show. For season 3, they mixed up the formula. To save costs, they cut the two episodes, one-story format -- aired on back-to-back nights -- from previous seasons. This also meant doing away with the trademark comic book-style cliffhangers. However, one innovation meant a budget increase: bringing in a third star alongside Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward). That star was Barbara Gordon, daughter...

Leslie Grace, who played the titular role in the canceled Batgirl movie, reveals what would have been her character’s final costume. Originally set for a 2022 release either in theaters or via HBO Max, Batgirl was scrapped shortly after reaching the post-production phase. While rumored to be partially due to poor test screenings, the primary reason for Warner Bros. Discovery’s cancellation decision was reported to be cost-cutting measures, with the film being written off as a tax break.
Grace took to Instagram to share a glimpse at what would have been Batgirl’s final costume from the movie. In a seconds-long bit of footage, Grace can be seen in a Batgirl costume that is markedly different to the first Batgirl costume Grace revealed back in January 2022. Whereas the former costume consists of a more wrinkled, leathery material and front zipper, the new suit is a sturdier body armor with a built-in cape.

Batgirl needs to get around just as much as Batman does, and new cosplay from Yuuki Weasley has given Barbara Gordon her own version of the Batmobile.
Although there have been several versions of Batgirl throughout the years, Barbara Gordon remains the best known and most popular. Making her debut in 1967, Babs carried the Batgirl mantle until the late 1980s, when she was paralyzed by the Joker and refashioned herself into the intelligence-gathering tech expert known as Oracle. While 2011 saw her grand return as Batgirl, she’s stepped back recently to allow the other Batgirls Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain to carry on her legacy. The character recently made headlines after her movie was pulled from HBOMax, but thankfully Babs still remains an integral part of the DC Universe in the comics.

HBO Max has found its Batgirl. Previously, it had been reported that a live-action Batgirl movie was in the works at HBO Max, though not much else has been revealed about the project since. This week, a major casting update brought about the news that the project had narrowed down the shortlist of actresses in consideration for the titular role. Per Deadline, the list included Isabella Merced, Zoey Deutch, Haley Lu Richardson, and Leslie Grace.
After these recent screen tests, Warner Bros. and DC Films have reportedly decided to go with Leslie Grace to play the live-action Barbara Gordon in Batgirl. The studio is said to have been high up on the rising star already after she impressed audiences and critics with her breakout role in In the Heights. Her subsequent audition reportedly sealed the deal according to Deadline, though the studio hasn't yet provided an official comment.

It looks like it's all stations go this week as Warner Bros. have apparently set a line-up of ladies to step into the cape of Barbara Gordon in the HBO Max original movie, Batgirl. While all DC fan's eyes have recently been on filming of The Flash, the start of shooting on Aquaman 2 and the imminent arrival of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and news of its Peacemaker spin-off series, it looks like Batgirl has been quietly prepping for the casting of its lead role.
The new movie comes with some heavyweights in the comic book movie stakes behind the scenes, with Ms Marvel directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah helming the movie, while writing duties fall to Christina Hodson, who also penned Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and The Flash. The long-gestating Batgirl movie is finally taking a big step forward with a new pair of directors attached to the project. Per THR, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah - the directing duo behind last year's hit action movie sequel Bad Boys for Life - have signed on to co-direct Batgirl for Warner Bros. Christina Hodson, who wrote Bumblebee and Birds of Prey along with the upcoming Dceu movie The Flash, is also on board to write the Batgirl script.
"With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham," said producer Kristin Burr (Cruella). "Christina's script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I'm just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool."

“Bad Boys for Life” directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have been tapped to helm DC’s upcoming “Batgirl” movie at Warner Bros.
Christina Hodson penned the script for the new superhero film, centered on Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon. Hodson, who wrote the screenplays for “Bumblebee” and “Birds of Prey,” also penned the script for DC’s upcoming “Flash” movie.
The “Batgirl” pic is being planned for HBO Max and is produced by Kristin Burr. The character, famously played by the late Yvonne Craig, was initially introduced as part of the “Batman” TV series in 1967. Batgirl’s last big-screen appearance was in 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” with Alicia Silverstone taking on the role.
El Arbi and Fallah most recently directed the third installment of the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-starring franchise to a box office-busting $426 million in worldwide ticket sales.

The new HBO Max streaming service is fast becoming one of DC and Warner Bros.’ main platforms for releasing older and new content. As well as classic DC shows and movies, Arrowverse episodes and potentially the ongoing series running on DC Universe, we’ll be getting a live-action Green Lantern project.
Other DC shows planned for HBO Max, meanwhile, include anthology program Strange Adventures and the Elizabeth Banks-produced DC Superhero High as well as a potential second life for Matt Ryan’s Constantine. We’re now hearing though that a Batman family show might also be headed to HBO Max, featuring Red Hood, Nightwing, Batgirl and Robin. And given that this intel comes to us from the same sources who told us about that aforementioned Green Lantern series before it was announced, we have no reason to doubt it.
If it pans out, the series would reportedly not connect...

Even though it hasn’t done the greatest job of expressly stating as such, Gotham‘s fifth and final season has already experienced its share of incremental time jumps. If you’ll recall, the premiere teased Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Penguin and Riddler uniting in order to combat a full-scale invasion, before returning to earlier on the timeline. Of course, “The Trial of Jim Gordon” plainly let us know that its concluding moments jumped forward by a month.
Oddly enough, “I am Bane” seemed to take a considerable leap forward because the freshly impregnated Barbara Kean was all but ready to deliver her baby. In fact, she did just as much by the time said installment was over, after bravely mowing down Bane’s henchmen while Lee Thompkins pushed her around in a wheelchair.

Don Knotts came to fame with his trademark comedy style of portraying a meek, excessively nervous character. He was Woody Allen before Woody Allen was Woody Allen. Knotts honed his skills on Steve Allen's show in the 1950s, with his "man on the street" Nervous Nellie routine sending audiences into fits of laughter. He co-starred with fellow up-and-comer Andy Griffith in the hit Broadway production of "No Time for Sergeants" and the subsequent film version. When Griffith landed his own TV series in 1960 in which he played the sheriff of fictional small town Mayberry, Knotts imposed upon him to write a small, occasional part he could play as Barney Fife, Griffith's inept but loyal sheriff. Griffith complied and the role made Knotts an icon of American comedy, allowing him to win an astonishing five Emmys for playing the same character. Five years into the series, Knotts...

Less than a year before her passing in 2015, actress Yvonne Craig was chatting with me about the enduring nature of the 1960s Batman series that starred Adam West in the title role, Burt Ward as his sidekick, Robin; and Yvonne herself in the dual role of Barbara Gordon and Batgirl. The complete series had been issued on Blu-ray at the time, which explained the excitement of the moment, but not the fact that people still loved that show nearly 50 years after its debut. “Part of it is that it is that it's a sign of our times,” she said. “Everyone would like to go back to the time of ‘Flower Power.’ You know, rather than blowing people up in all these different places like they are in the world, people are looking for an escape. And this is not only an escape, but it’s stilly and fun and filled with pretty colors.

Adam West, who was beloved for generations as the man under the crimefighting cowl in the 1960s Batman TV series, passed away yesterday at the age of 88. West had an acting career going back to the 1950s. Today, Cinelinx pays homage to a gentleman who loved his fans, as we say goodbye to Adam West
Adam West loved playing Batman. Beginning with the Batman Tv show (1966-1969), he continued being involved with DC Batman projects, including Batman: the Movie (1966), The Super Friends (or Super Powers Team), the New Adventures of Batman, Tarzan and the Super Seven, The Legends of the Super heroes, Batman: the Animated Series, the Batman: New Times video game, The 2004-2006 Batman cartoon, Batman: the Brave & the Bold, Robot Chicken, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, and the upcoming Batman vs. Two-Face. Through all these projects, for over five decades, West voiced either the Batman or one of his supporting cast.

What's this? Could this be the end for Batman? Rest in peace, Adam West, the one and only Caped Crusader who truly defined the role. There have been so many incarnations of Batman over the years – on the page and on the screen – but Adam West was the one flesh-and-blood actor who ever did justice to the cape, on the Sixties TV series Batman.
West, who died of leukemia Friday at the age of 88, brought deadpan humor and old-school gallantry to the role, week after week; same Bat Time, same Bat Channel.

The movie, to which no one else is yet attached, will be part of the DC Extended Universe and follow this summer’s “Wonder Woman” as the second project in that franchise to center around a female lead.

Critics aren't quite sure what to make of Nicholas Winding Refn’s new film The Neon Demon, but it's safe to say he's got vision. And now he's apparently turned his sights to the DC Comics' character Batgirl. Could he make a live-action film happen? The Danish director (who also did Bronson, Only God Forgives, and Drive) was speaking to Business Insider to promote The Neon Demon, which stars Elle Fanning, and spoke about how he once wanted to tackle DC's biggest female superhero: But this isn't the first time the Danish filmmaker has wanted to make a movie with a strong female lead. After the release of his popular 2011 thriller "Drive," Refn said he really wanted to make a Wonder Woman movie. That's not going to happen quite yet. When Gal Gadot stars as the superhero in her standalone movie, out in the summer of 2017, Patty Jenkins ("Monster") will have the reins.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Batman TV show (1966-68) starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and his teen partner Robin the Boy Wonder. The show was a huge hit when first released and still has a loyal following today. The show was a clever satire, not only on super heroes but also on 1960s pop-culture in general.
