Trump Has Completely Wrecked America’s Brand

Being that the Kids in the Hall member is comedy royalty in Canada, perhaps it’s not that surprising that the CBC show quickly scooped him up. McKinney now...

Interview: Malcolm McDowell discusses Son of a Critch + Tease of His Next Rob Zombie Project
Image
If you’re like me and haven’t heard of CBC’s Son of a Critch, I hope to change that. Like The Goldbergs, this sitcom is based on the life of its creator and also happens to be set in the 80s. But if there’s one thing missing from that show that Critch has in spades, it’s Malcolm McDowell. The actor has had such a storied career that seeing him in a sitcom is surprising. Yet everything about it works, and he looks to be having an absolute blast. So I was excited to be able to talk to both McDowell and the series creator, Mark Critch, about their show. I watched the first two episodes of the new season, and this kind of show is right up my alley. Very light-hearted, it has a bit of a Wonder Years vibe, and I love the “on-the-nose” narration.

Son of a Critch, a new CW comedy, is the latest from Barnsley and is based on the award-winning, bestselling memoir from Mark Critch (TV's This Hour Has 22 Minutes). Schitt’s Creek EP Shares Lesson Learned from the Show
Image
Schitt's Creek's success was not just due to its humorous episodes, but also its focus on character development and finding humor in relatable experiences. Son of a Critch, a show linked to Schitt's Creek, also finds its humor in its characters and maintains an emotional core that makes it relatable and funny. Son of a Critch sets itself apart by being based on the real-life experiences of comedian Mark Critch and chooses to prioritize playful sentimentality over a high joke count, possibly influenced by the success of Schitt's Creek.

Schitt’s Creek, the beloved sitcom starring Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Catherine O'Hara as the wildly out-of-touch riches-to-rags Rose family, is a bona fide Canadian success story. Originally aired on CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Schitt’s Creek found exponential success in the United States when it found its way to Netflix. Running six seasons and 80 episodes in total,...
