Michael Mann Wants His 32-Year-Old Oscar-Winning Film to Finally Get a 4K Release
Image
Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann wants one of his most beloved movies, the only one to win an Oscar, to get a 4K Uhd release. The Last of the Mohicans, starring the iconic Daniel Day-Lewis, debuted in 1992 and is considered one of the director's best films.

In a recent sit-down with Collider to discuss the 25th anniversary of his 1999 film, The Insider, it was brought to Mann's attention that The Last of the Mohicans had not yet gotten a 4K Uhd release. He also discovered that The Insider and Thief are yet to arrive on 4K, denying the movies the benefits of the upgraded restoration. The Heat director is intent on righting these wrongs. "I didn't realize The Last of the Mohicans wasn't available in 4K," he said. "We absolutely gotta pursue that. Same thing with Insider."

The Bone Collector (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
If there was a decade that truly helped to shape the future of the crime thriller genre, it was undoubtedly the 1990s. The era churned out numerous movies that have become the benchmark for how to craft a movie about the hunt for a serial killer, or flashing femme fatales with a penchant for murder. Movies such as The Silence of the Lambs, Misery, Se7en and Basic Instinct set a benchmark for not only quality in the crime flick, but also by delivering iconic sequences that are synonymous within the genre. Lambs had Anthony Hopkins’ wonderful Chianti sipping performance, Misery gleefully smashed ankles, Se7en had the tragic head in a box scene, while Basic Instinct allowed Sharon Stone to show more than just her acting ability. The point is, by the time the movie we’re focusing on in this episode was released in 1999, audiences had preconceived expectations, thanks...

Judgment Night – The Ultimate 90s Action Thriller
Image
Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

Set-up: Judgment Night started out as a spec script written by Kevin Jarre, whose other credits include Rambo: First Blood Part 2,...

“He was getting a lot of pressure from a lot of people”: Before The Departed, Mark Wahlberg’s ‘Marky Mark’s Reputation Almost Cost Him Another Leonardo DiCaprio Movie
Image
Prior to his Academy Award-nominated performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Mark Wahlberg, 52, was better known for his music career as ‘Marky Mark’. It turns out, though, that his past nearly kept him from being cast in the psychological thriller Fear (1996).

As it happens, Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the role of David McCall, but the casting director felt he was not a choice for the part. Rather, he made a favorable impression on director James Foley on behalf of Wahlberg, with whom he co-starred on The Basketball Diaries. Later on, the two collaborated on The Departed.

Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg in Fear

Well, as one of Tinseltown’s most versatile actors, the father of four can now transition between comedic and action roles with ease. However, his breakout performance came in 1996, when he played the eerie antagonist in the big-screen psychological thriller Fear.

Mark Wahlberg Recounts Getting His Star-Making 1996 Villain Role (With Help From DiCaprio)
Image
Leonardo DiCaprio recommended Mark Wahlberg for his villain role in Fear. Despite initial skepticism, director James Foley gave Wahlberg a shot in Fear, leading to his successful acting career. Wahlberg's career took off in the mid-90s with back-to-back films showcasing his acting chops.

Mark Wahlberg explains how he got his key role in 1996’s Fear. Wahlberg played David McCall, a man whose affection towards a woman becomes an obsession, in the psychological drama. Fear is directed by James Foley, written by Christopher Crowe, and features a leading cast of Wahlberg along with Reese Witherspoon, William Petersen, Amy Brenneman, and Alyssa Milano.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz, Wahlberg explains how he got his role in Fear. According to the actor, it was Leonardo DiCaprio who recommended Wahlberg to director Foley. Because Wahleberg had not acted, Foley thought “are you out of your mind?” in reaction to DiCaprio.

Nonetheless, Foley agreed to meet with Wahlberg,...

Mark Wahlberg's Only Villain Role Was A Stealth Remake Of A $320 Million 1980s Thriller (But With A Twist)
Image
Fear (1996) was seen as a teen version of "Fatal Attraction," starring Mark Wahlberg as the villain. Despite negative reviews, Fear became a sleeper hit, earning $20 million at the box office. Wahlberg's role in Fear was his only true villainous character and led to his nomination for Best Villain at the MTV Movie Awards.

Mark Wahlberg (in his only true villainous role) starred alongside Reese Witherspoon in Fear, a movie that was seemingly inspired by a similar psychological thriller from the 1980s. The 1996 film was directed by James Foley and written by Christopher Crowe, and its story revolves around the strange romance between Wahlberg's David McCall and Witherspoon's Nicole Walker. Nicole is only 16, while David is 23, but their age difference in Fear isn't the only red flag. As the movie goes on, David's true character starts revealing itself, leading to an intense narrative that many compared to a previous critically acclaimed film.

How Old Mark Wahlberg & Reese Witherspoon Were In 1996's Fear
Image
Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon's characters in Fear were 23 and 16 years old, resulting in an uncomfortable age gap. In real life, Wahlberg is five years older than Witherspoon. Fear helped launch Wahlberg's film career, leading to opportunities like his role in Boogie Nights.

Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon starred in Fear at the beginning of their careers, and the movie revolves around a significant age gap between their characters, while the two actors share an age difference in real life. The 1996 psychological thriller film, directed by James Foley and written by Christopher Crowe, tells the story of Witherspoon's character, Nicole Walker, a high school student who comes from a wealthy family and begins dating an older man named David McCall, played by Wahlberg, much to her father's dismay. Fear (1996) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Let me give you my thoughts about love. I tend to side with famous Irish poet Oscar Wilde, when he says, “Never love anyone who treats you like you’re ordinary.” This is the basis for any successful relationship between lovers, most importantly during the honeymoon phase. Love sure makes us do crazy things for the people we care for most. But what is that limitation of crazy? And how far can it get before the significant others realizes this and wants to cut the cord for good? Sadly, cutting the cord may mean dire consequences for those that wish to end it. Let’s put that to the test and revisit two star-crossed lovers which is something out of any teenage girl’s dreams. But what if that dream soon warps into a twisted tale of horrific obsession, stalking, and manipulation? We’re talking about 1996’s Fear which is...

Fear: Peacock is developing a series inspired by the 1996 Mark Wahlberg thriller
Image
Four years ago, it was announced that Universal was moving forward with a remake of their 1996 teen stalker thriller Fear (watch it Here), which starred Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon. Fear producer Brian Grazer was back to produce the new version, which got far enough that Straight Outta Compton‘s Jonathan Herman was writing the screenplay and Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) was cast in the lead role. Then it fell apart… But there’s still life in Fear. Variety has broken the news that a series inspired by the film is now in development at the Peacock streaming service, coming our way from Universal Television.

Jessica Goldberg, creator of the Hulu series The Path, is writing and executive producing this new take on Fear, which has the following synopsis:

Image
Peacock has taken in for development Fear, a series based on the 1996 thriller film, from The Path creator Jessica Goldberg, Imagine Television and Universal TV, Deadline has confirmed.

Written by Goldberg, inspired by Imagine Entertainment’s 1996 cult classic film Fear, the modern series reinvention finds two young lovers in a psychological game of cat and mouse—but who’s the cat, and who’s the mouse? When David and Nicole first meet in Seattle, it feels like an epic, once-in-a-lifetime romance – but soon it becomes clear that the seemingly perfect couple is anything but. Told from conflicting points of view, the series wrestles with personal demons, hidden agendas and reframes the “he said she said” convention into a twist-filled suspense story about toxic relationships.

‘Nightmares’ Blu-ray Review (101 Films)
Stars: Lance Henriksen, Veronica Cartwright, Cristina Raines, Joe Lambie, Anthony James, Richard Masur, Lee Ving, Moon Unit Zappa, Emilio Estevez | Written by Christopher Crowe, Jeffrey Bloom | Directed by Joseph Sargent

While it may be hard to believe that less than a decade ago Nightmares was one of The most sought after, most-requested titles for re-release, after watching this 80s anthology it’s easy to see why. Very much part of the 70s and early 80s portmenteau film vogue, which gave us the likes of Trilogy of Terror, Creepshow and its sequel, The Twilght Zone and Cats Eye, Nightmares features four stories that riff on pre-existing themes:

Terror in Topanga is a take on the “killer is in the house” trope; whilst The Bishop of Battle plays on the perils of obsession and the early-80s belief that video games were “evil”. The Benediction is a quasi-religious version of Richard Matheson...

Review: "Nightmares" (1983) Starring Cristina Raines, Lance Henrikson And Emilio Estevez; Blu-ray Special Edition
By Lee Pfeiffer

By the early 1970s there had been a revival of interest in the format of anthology suspense/horror stories. This genre had been all the rage in the late 1950s and early 1960s with shows like "The Twilight Zone", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Thriller!" (hosted by Boris Karloff) attracting loyal audiences. "Twilight Zone" creator and host Rod Serling had two bites at the apple when he introduced "Night Gallery" as a TV movie in 1969 (giving young Steven Spielberg his first major directing gig) and then spun it off into a moderately successful weekly TV series. The early to mid-1970s also saw a major resurgence in horror-themed anthology feature films. The concept was hardly a new one for the big screen as the first major film of this type was "Dead of Night", released in 1945.  Roger Corman oversaw some similarly-themed big screen anthologies in the early to mid-1960s,...

FX Adapting Last of the Mohicans
Last of the Mohicans screenwriter Christopher Crowe is adapting the 1992 film for a limited series on FX. The story originally comes from James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 novel. FX has a handful of historically tinted limited series in the works, including Conquistadors, Paul Giamatti's Mayflower, and a Vietnam project called They Marched into Sunlight. There's also the Fargo adaptation, which won't exactly be historical but will be super North Dakota-ish.

James Reviews Shout Factory’s Gordon’s War / Off Limits Double Feature [DVD Review]
Shout! Factory once again is giving us a double feature DVD, one a blaxploitation film set in New York City and the other a gritty noir-flavored film set in Saigon during the Vietnam War. Both have the connection to the war itself. And I’ll be the first to say that they are both worth your time, forgotten gems that have never seen the light of a DVD release until now.

Ossie Davis directs Gordon’s War, actor and director who made what I consider the finest blaxploitation film around (Cotton Comes To Harlem) and he does wonders with a tried and through plot consisting of a man on a mission of revenge against those who wronged the people of his neighborhood in the mode of good ol’ 70′s vigilante justice. Gordon Hudson (Paul Winfield) comes home from the Vietnam War where he finds out that his wife has died from a heroin overdose.
