Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter Marathon can’t seem to catch a break lately. What should have been an exciting revival of a franchise has morphed into a PR nightmare that threatens to derail the entire project. The September 23 release date that once seemed set in stone now appears increasingly shaky.
The trouble began when UK artist Fern Hook (known online as Antireal) discovered her 2017 poster designs plastered throughout Marathon’s environments during the closed alpha. We’re not talking about vague inspirations here—these were direct 1:1 copies, with one texture even containing the text “Antireal daily series.” Ouch.
Bungie’s “free-fall” morale and delayed release
According to Forbes‘ Paul Tassi, who is known to maintain reliable connections within Bungie, the situation inside the studio has reached crisis levels. “The vibes have never been worse,” one source told Tassi, describing an “actively hostile environment” surrounding the game’s development.

When a grieving neuroscientist uses AI technology that allows her to reconnect with her dead father, she finds herself surfing waves of emotion and questioning life itself. That’s the winning premise in O Horizon, writer/director Madeleine Rotzler’s adult fairy tale starring Maria Bakalova, David Strathairn (Nomadland), and — big surprise — Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Aimee Mann, whose music fueled the Magnolia soundtrack and was also featured in Jerry McGuire. “Obviously this is a dream cast,” Rotzler told MovieWeb in a recent interview, adding:
“Great actors make writing great. They're everything. With Aimee, we just got so lucky. I love her music. For her to guide Maria's character and sing music live was a dream. I really wanted the film to cross genres as much as possible, and I’ve always wanted to do live music in a movie. So, having her there, to physically be there singing for us in the film,...

O Horizon is bound to be one of the season's sweetest charmers. The heartwarming indie film stars Maria Bakalova as a neuroscientist grieving the loss of her father (David Strathairn of Nomadland and Good Night and Good Luck). There's a nice sci-fi element, too, placing the film in the realm of magical realism and making it an overall celebration of indie cinema. Written and directed by Emmy winner Madeleine Rotzler (Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus), O Horizon is the kind of movie we need more of.
Bakalova evokes great compassion for her character, Abby, who grabs hold of an opportunity to speak and engage with her deceased father, Warren, again — through the use of new AI technology. Trippy. But perhaps not so much, considering the technological advancement these days. The challenge for Abby, however, is that the ripple effects of her actions spread much farther than she ever realized,...

Quick Links George Clooney Dodges a Major Box Office Bullet Michael Keaton's Notorious Holiday Flop Both Hollywood Greats Had Epic '90s Duds
George Clooney and Michael Keaton are two of Hollywood's most illustrious leading men, and it's hard to remember a period when they weren't completely dominating every film and role they tackled. However, the late '90s proved to be a precarious time in both prolific actors' careers, as the movie stars notably appeared in the biggest box office flops that tarnished their otherwise impressive resumes.
Keaton ended up headlining the holiday stinker Jack Frost and Clooney the epic superhero flop Batman & Robin, both of which were major critical and commercial duds that garnered unwanted attention for the actors and left them questioning their statuses in the entertainment industry. Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers earns a glowing review from a historian for its portrayal of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Released in 2006, Flags of Our Fathers explores the American experience of the iconic World War II battle, and serves as a sister film to Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima (2006). Flags of Our Fathers, which stars Ryan Phillippe, Barry Pepper, Joseph Cross, and Adam Beach, focuses specifically on the lives of the men who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi, as is captured in an iconic photograph, with early sections of the movie featuring intense beach combat.
In a recent video for Insider, historian John McManus analyzes select scenes from Flags of Our Fathers' Battle of Iwo Jima sequences, awarding the film a perfect grade for historical accuracy. According to McManus, the film accurately portrays Iwo Jima's unique volcanic ash soil and the trouble it caused the Marines landing on the beach,...

The upcoming sci-fi horror movie Affection has found its leads, and the first details about its story make it sound like a darker version of a popular Adam Sandler rom-com. The horror genre continues to go through a great run with sequels, adaptations of other works, and original stories, and the branch of sci-fi horror has been especially popular recently. Movies like M3GAN have reignited interest in sci-fi horror, and there are some exciting movies in development from this branch of horror, among them Affection.

Scream queen Jessica Rothe has joined the cast of a new sci-fi horror movie, Affection, one with a plot vaguely reminiscent of her breakout role in the time loop slasher series Happy Death Day.
Deadline reports that the actress is playing the role of Ellie, who becomes trapped inside a "cyclical nightmare" that causes her memories to frequently "reset," erasing her life with her husband and daughter. Even worse, her real memories are replaced with "vivid memories of a life she's never lived."
In some ways, it sounds like a cross between a lighter rom-com like 50 First Dates and Happy Death Day. It's not quite the same thing as a time manipulation movie where each day repeats itself, but one that could be a lot darker depending on what direction this story takes.
Rothe will star opposite Joseph Cross, the actor best known for his performances in Lincoln and Licorice Pizza.

Becoming trapped in a nightmare is the worst. I’m reasonably adept at controlling my dreams, but now and again, the slumber is too strong to shake the dark visions from my mind’s eye. Jessica Rother and Joseph Cross are about to find out what that’s all about when they star in BT Meza’s directorial debut for the sci-fi thriller Affection. Julianna Layne co-stars.
Meza directs Affection from his script. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Affection tells the story of “Ellie (Rothe), who is stuck in a cyclical nightmare. There's no denying that director, writer, and producer M. Night Shyamalan remains one of Hollywood's most creative and, at times, ambitious storytellers, constantly taking risks with his movies that sometimes hit with audiences as well as miss. Now, with his latest film, Trap, which stars Josh Hartnett and is set to release in theaters on Aug. 2, audiences are already beginning to speculate what twist Shyamalan may have up his sleeve this time, as Shyamalan and twist endings go together like Zack Snyder and slow-mo action. However, of all the surprising Shyamalan twist endings, there is one that continuously gets left out of the conversation: the one from 1998's Wide Awake, which stars Joseph Cross, Julia Stiles, Denis Leary, and Rosie O'Donnell.

The Rock insults his own remake of Baywatch, suggesting it was of poor quality and no one likes it. Baywatch received negative reviews, was criticized by critics, and is one of The Rock's lowest-rated movies. There are rumors that The Rock may star in a remake of Jack Frost, the 1998 Christmas fantasy film starring Michael Keaton as a man who dies and is brought back to life as a snowman.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson fired shots at his own remake of Baywatch during an exciting appearance on WWE Raw Day 1. During the event, The Rock used the poor quality of his 2017 attempt at bringing the action-packed world of Baywatch back to screens to insult fellow professional wrestler Jinder Mahal saying, “No one likes you… if you were one of The Rock’s movies, you’d be Baywatch.” Which, if you’ve seen Baywatch, is perhaps even a little too harsh.

Fans aren't exactly ecstatic about the idea of Dwayne Johnson remaking Jack Frost.
According to movie scooper Daniel Richtman, Johnson is currently being eyed to potentially star in a new take on Jack Frost, the holiday comedy from 1998 that starred Michael Keaton as a father who gets transformed into a talking snowman. While the rumor has not been verified, it has garnered some attention on social media. There are many fans of the original film who are concerned that a remake will taint their childhood memories of Jack Frost, unhappy with the idea of seeing it get reimagined.

Devotion is a film directed by J.D. Dillard starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell.
This is a movie that delivers what it promises, no more and no less, and does just enough (or even a little less) in the story department and ferociously and devotedly hangs onto the technical department of recreation and, above all, the action scenes.
Premise
During the Fifties, in the Cold War times, two very different pilots will be forced to fight the enemy and test their friendship in combat.
About the Movie Devotion (2022)
Devotion is one of those movies about heroes in a war with all against each other, all the clichés we can find in this genre applied to a historic recreation that is technically brilliant, but loses power because of its simple screenplay with barely any depth to it and which bases its strength on the excellent scenes of fighter pilot aircraft in combat.

It’s the best film of the year, according to the National Board of Review. It’s competing in eight different categories at the upcoming Critics Choice Awards. An Oscar nomination for Best Picture is all but assured, and bids for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (for creator Paul Thomas Anderson) look similarly promising. So why are we dismissing the “Licorice Pizza” cast at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards?
As of this writing, the film looks to be a dark horse in the official Gold Derby odds for an ensemble nomination at the SAG Awards. While I agree it’s a longshot to actually take home the award, I do think that the guild’s nominating committee may well deliver “Licorice Pizza” a Best Film Ensemble bid on January 12. Here are five reasons why.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson makes movie stars out of Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in this deliriously entertaining evocation of Southern California in the 1970s. Part awkward romance, part growing-up-on-the-fringes-of-Hollywood comedy and part nostalgia-fused hangout, it’s one of the best films of the year.
Named after a beloved San Fernando Valley record store, Anderson’s ninth feature film Licorice Pizza takes place in Encino, California in the early 1970s. Based partly on the real-life experiences of Anderson’s friend Gary Goetzman (a former child performer who’s now Tom Hanks’ producing partner), the film centres on burly, self-assured, entrepreneurial 15 year old Gary Valentine, who’s instantly smitten with 25 year...

Do you feel that chill in the air? Winter has once again descended to encase us in her cold, deathly embrace. But, of course, winter does not come alone. She brings with her a golem made from the very snow she produces to freeze us down to our bones. This avatar mocks us by shaping itself in a distorted facsimile of the human form cobbled together with coal, carrots, and despair. I refer, of course, to the snowman, the ultimate bodhisattva of the season of death.
Human beings often try to make sense of life’s horrors through story, and in the late ’90s not one, but two films dared plunge the depths of the uncanny dread induced by snowmen. And such was the terrifying nature of both films that they each earned the title Jack Frost.

Brought to life by a stellar cast of A-listers, David Fincher's Golden Era-styled Netflix drama, Mank, hops back and forth in time to develop a rounded picture of its troubled genius subject, screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman). A love letter to the early days of Hollywood showbiz, the black-and-white film mostly follows the development of Citizen Kane. But how much of Mank is based on a true story, and how much of it is proverbial movie magic? While there's the occasional Hollywood flourish here and there, much of Mank is rooted in reality.
Did Mankiewicz Write Citizen Kane at a Ranch?
Early in the film, Mankiewicz, an established critic-turned-screenwriter, emerges from a car accident. He ends up at a quiet ranch in Victorville, CA, with a secretary named Rita Alexander (Lily Collins), who helps him type up the script for Citizen Kane. Filmmaker Orson Welles (Tom Burke) occasionally phones...

"It's a modern day version of Quixote!" Netflix has debuted one final trailer for David Fincher's new film Mank, now available on Netflix today for everyone to watch. Fincher directed a script originally written by his late father, Jack Fincher, about the writer of Citizen Kane, named Herman J. Mankiewicz. The black & white film follows "Mank's" tumultuous development of Orson Welles' iconic masterpiece Citizen Kane as he races to finish it in record time. The film stars Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, with a stellar cast including Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies, Lily Collins as Rita Alexander, Arliss Howard as Louis B. Mayer, as well as Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Joseph Cross, Jamie McShane, Toby Leonard Moore, Monika Grossman, Charles Dance, and Tom Burke as Orson Welles. Reviews say that it's "quite moving... tight and layered and complex." Enjoy. Here's the final official...

Joseph Cross to Direct Movie Adaptation of Louise Candlish’s Novel ‘The Other Passenger’ (Exclusive)
Louise Candlish’s best-selling novel “The Other Passenger” is getting the feature film treatment.
Actor-turned-director Joseph Cross has nabbed film rights and plans to direct the movie adaptation. Cross will also produce the film through his company, Moving Image Productions, alongside Lucas Evans. No actors are attached yet.
Candlish’s book, which is a hit in the U.K., will be published in the United States in July 2021 by Simon & Schuster. The logline for the book reads: “Rocked by a traumatic incident on the commuter train, Jamie travels to work by river bus with his younger neighbor Kit. It’s the lifestyle change he badly needs — until the morning Kit doesn’t show up for the boat and Jamie is met at his stop by the police. Kit’s wife Melia has reported him missing and the police say another passenger saw Kit and Jamie arguing on the boat home the night before.

The first word on Mank is finally here! Yesterday evening, the Netflix release screened for the first time, with yours truly among the crowd getting a chance to take it in. In short, the film is great and certainly an Oscar contender. As for a longer take, that can be found below with some of the Tweets that hit the web last night. You’ll be able to see those next, but take it from me…this is a flick with a great chance to lead the nominations for the next Academy Awards. It has the goods, that’s for sure. Read on for more… Once more for those who aren’t in the know, the movie is a biopic as well as a drama, as seen through Fincher’s distinct eyes. Hot on the heels of the Teaser Trailer arriving about two weeks ago, Netflix has now opted to drop a Full Trailer for their big Academy Awards pony, Mank. The film is almost certainly going to have major Oscar appeal, but beyond that, this looks like a trip down memory lane for a classic Hollywood tale, as only David Fincher can do it. If that doesn’t sound like must see cinema, I don’t know what is. As always, you can see the Trailer at the end of the post, but first, a teensy bit of discussion is in order, don’t you think? For those who aren’t in the know, the movie is a biopic as well as a drama, as seen through Fincher’s distinct eyes.
