Eight-year-old Bruce Wayne first became Batman when seeing his parents gunned down in Gotham City's Crime Alley. It's easier to count the Batman movies that don't show this than the ones that do. It's why you can expect tons of jokes and sincere complaints to follow about the agony of having to watch Thomas and Martha Wayne die again and again.
As an unamused Clown Prince of Crime would say: "Ha. Ha."
The jokes are more tiring than the scene at this point, as exhausting as "Why doesn't Batman simply buy crime?"
The death of Bruce Wayne's parents is the core of his character, the one wrong he can never right. If you have a problem with Batman stories going back to it, then maybe Batman just isn't for you. It's a powerful scene that earns the right to be...

A return to Ransom Canyon is officially in order at Netflix. After a long wait spanning over two months since its premiere, the romantic modern western series has finally been granted a Season 2 renewal on the platform. The news feels a bit overdue considering the Josh Duhamel-led show debuted to widespread viewership success, earning comparisons to Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone along the way despite only garnering a 45% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. After spending four weeks in the streamer's global Top 10 for English television series, charming audiences with a 73% score, and being hailed as another worthy comfort watch, it's now time for Staten Kirkland to start looking towards the horizon.
Based on the series of books by Jodi Thomas, Ransom Canyon unfolds amid the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country, where three ranching dynasties are caught in a power struggle over land as outside forces threaten to upend their way of life.

Netflix is certainly taking its time to decide the fate of Ransom Canyon. The hit series has consistently proven itself as a top performer on the platform and yet the streamer hasn't officially renewed it for Season 2. During an interview with TV Insider, however, showrunner April Blair (All American) gave very good news to fans and revealed that the wheels are already turning to bring new episodes to life.
Blair commented on several aspects of the explosive Season 1 finale, from Yancy's (Jack Schumacher) shocking reveal to that death that we still have to get over. In order to discuss the long-term effects of all that happened, though, the Ransom Canyon boss had to delve a bit into Season 2 and where we will find the characters if and when we meet them again. She stated:

As Season 1 of Ransom Canyon wrapped, fans of the new Netflix series were left with some loose threads that a new season would need to tie up. One of the characters that has the most to deal with is Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher), who presents himself as one kind of person throughout the episodes, only to reveal that he had a big secret that he conveniently forgot to tell his new lover, Ellie (Marianly Tejada). In a recent interview, Schumacher talked about his character's path in a potential Season 2.
During the interview with Swoon, Schumacher commented on the fact that we did know that Yancy is a con artist, so lying is "just second nature" to him. At the same time, the actor mentioned that he does believe that Yancy is trying to start from scratch and be a new person, but apparently, old habits die hard. If the series comes back for more episodes,...

As much as we instantly think about Yellowstone when we take a look at the fresh neo-western series Ransom Canyon, we can't deny that the show managed to find its own rhythm and identity in Season 1. For one, the Netflix series has a much less cynical approach to love — even though its romantic storylines have their share of twists. In a new interview, series star Jack Schumacher (Top Gun: Maverick), who plays cowboy Yancy Grey, talked about his character's secret, which is revealed by the end of the season.
The storyline of Yancy in Ransom Canyon is pretty compelling because he wasn't exactly looking for the love of his life. Initially, he comes to Texas Hill Country wanting to make money fast and then move on to the next town. He just didn't count on meeting Ellie Estevez (Marianly Tejada) and falling head over heels for her. It all looks...

The success of Yellowstone is undeniable — the Paramount+ series repeatedly brings in big viewing numbers, and it's no wonder that other platforms are trying to replicate the format. Netflix's latest attempt at the neo-western genre is Ransom Canyon. For a new and unknown series, the title resonated pretty well with Netflix subscribers, and with just one week it shot up all the way to #2 among the most-watched shows on the platform — it only failed to outperform the new season of Black Mirror.
Ransom Canyon is set in Texas and chronicles the feud between three families that own ranches and are fighting to control the land. Yes, it's a pretty similar situation to what the Duttons deal with in Yellowstone, but the story managed to rope viewers in: the series accumulated 7.2 million views in less than seven days, which is more than Adolescence did this week (6M) and more than...

Last year, the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda got a Chinese remake that pit a group of circus performers against a giant snake. The year before that, the Syfy creature feature Sharktopus got a Chinese remake. And this year, it’s the shark thriller The Shallows‘ turn to get the Chinese remake treatment… and this one gives the concept a sci-fi twist. You can watch the trailer in the embed above.

Minka Kelly does not plan to reprise her role as Lyla Garrity in the upcoming Friday Night Lights reboot being developed by Peacock. While promoting her new Netflix series Ransom Canyon, the actor commented on the future of her character from the original football drama, suggesting her time in Dillon, Texas is finished.
“I think it’s always best leaving people — if even they do — wanting more,” Kelly told Deadline. “I think leaving that where it was is probably the right thing to do. Maybe too much sometimes is too much. I don’t know that they need more Lyla.”
Kelly starred in Friday Night Lights from 2006 through 2009. Her character, Lyla, was first introduced as the Panthers’ head cheerleader and girlfriend to quarterback Jason Street. After Street was paralyzed during a game, Lyla’s storyline shifted dramatically, including a breakup and a brief relationship with Tim Riggins. By the time she left Dillon for college,...

Updated, March 27, 2025: A new trailer, set to “Texas Sun” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, has arrived for Netflix’s latest Wester TV series Ransom Canyon, based on the book by Jodi Thomas.
“In Ransom Canyon,” Josh Duhamel’s voice says over shots of ranchers riding horses, the main thoroughfare of the small Texas town, high school football games and more. “Everyone’s running from something, or running to something.”
Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, one of the main ranchers in the titular town, who is part of a large ensemble of the new Netflix show, out April 17.
“What’s up with that guy anyway?” Jack Schumacher’s Yancy Grey, who can be seen later on in the trailer risking it all for a rodeo ride, asks Cap Fuller (James Brolin) about the stoic Staten.
“He lost everything,” Brolin replies over a montage of a car wreck and police sirens.

Soap alum Josh Duhamel has a slew of projects coming up, but one of the most high-profile ones is a Netflix western called Ransom Canyon.
Texas Cowboy
Ransom Canyon will call on Josh Duhamel to ride a horse and basically live his best cowboy life. While the actor hails from North Dakota, his new drama is set in Texas. According to Tudum, Netflix’s online arm, the upcoming series “is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country.”
This modern Western is based on a popular book series by New York Times bestselling author Jodi Thomas. Duhamel plays Staten Kirkland, “owner and sole occupant of the sprawling Double K Ranch. Staten leads the charge to resist the outside forces threatening his way of life and the land that he loves.”

Move over Paramount, Netflix is coming for your audience of Western fans. The biggest streaming platform is trying to capture the spark that Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, Landman, and other series have ignited by creating their own Western franchises. The year began with American Primeval, an epic Western thriller about the Utah Massacre, and while it wasn't critically acclaimed (though MovieWeb loved it), it was certainly popular. Now comes Ransom Canyon, which cynics may call a Yellowstone rip-off, but which seems poised to certainly attract a strong audience. The synopsis reads as follows:
"Created, written, and executive produced by April Blair, Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country."
“At its core, Ransom Canyon isn’t just a town. It’s an idea. It’s the painful longing for your first love.

Drew Goddard's experience in the entertainment industry is as vast as it is celebrated. Being connected with elevated classics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel will do that. The television writer got his start in the writer's room and has gone on to even greater heights. The scribe for Ridley Scott's humorous and emotional sci-fi film, The Martian, Goddard was also the mastermind behind one of Netflix's grittiest Marvel ventures. He became Daredevil's showrunner, which lasted three seasons and is still a metric to which many Marvel shows are held.
Goddard's entertainment pedigree is so wide-ranging that he even had the chance to pen a few episodes of one of the biggest shows of the '00s. Premiering in 2004, Lost had the world in the grips of its mysterious and often confounding hands. The series was the largest ensemble drama of the time, telling a character-driven story on a mysterious island.

The victim remembers Judge Andrews in her room, Benson tells Carisi in our video preview. “She said that he tried to play it off like she wet the bed,” she adds. “It’s a good cover story in case she woke up,” Carisi points out, then checks, “And Judge Andrews was at the hospital? Despite some massive box office hits, DC never quite managed to outdo Marvel when it came to their respective shared cinematic universes. Even when "Wonder Woman" made $817 million, the whole shared universe thing just never seemed to suit DC. But it was a different story when it came to projects such as 2019's "Joker" and 2022's "The Batman" — both of which existed as separate stories outside of any shared continuity.
These so-called "Elseworlds" stories represented an intriguing future for DC and Warner Bros. following the closure of the DC Extended Universe. Rather than competing with Marvel's dominance of the superhero genre by establishing a rival shared cinematic universe, Warners seemed to have a ready-made alternative in the form of these director-led projects. "Joker," made more than a billion dollars, after which Matt Reeves' "The Batman" made $765 million. Rather than double down on these sorts of standalone movies, however, Warner decided...

With the arrival of The Fantastic Four, The Silver Surfer, Blade, and the X-Men, it feels like all of the major Marvel heroes will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, one character that many fans have been hoping to see that Marvel has been relatively quiet about is Ghost Rider. While the Ghost Rider persona is most commonly associated with Johnny Blaze, who Nicolas Cage played in the 2007 film Ghost Rider and its 2012 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, others in the comics have taken up the mantle, including Robbie Reyes, who Gabriel Luna played in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Arthur Fleck's true parentage may finally be confirmed in Joker: Folie Deux, possibly implicating Thomas Wayne. Thomas Wayne possibly being Arthur's father could reshape Batman and Joker's origin story and add complexities to their rivalry. Joker: Folie Deux will likely include more fact than fantasy, as Arthur Fleck will be on trial and receiving therapy.
By addressing one of the biggest mysteries from its 2019 predecessor, Joker: Folie Deux could irredeemably change Bruce Wayne's own origin story as Batman in Todd Phillips' dark Joker franchise. Despite taking place outside the mainstream DC Universe, 2019's Joker did introduce a younger Bruce Wayne, long before his parents' double murder and his evolution into the Caped Crusader. Phoenix's Arthur Fleck and the young Bruce Wayne, played by Dante Pereira-Olson, may have a much deeper and more harrowing connection.

While Hugh Jackman has a movie out in theaters that's absolutely dominating the box office, another one of his recent films is rocketing up the Netflix streaming charts. Reminiscence, the psychological thriller which Jackman stars in alongside Rebecca Ferguson, has officially begun streaming on Netflix. The film has yet to crack the top 10 movie chart, likely due to it releasing on the platform just one day prior, falling short of the least popular entries in the top 10, including Minions, The Lorax, and White Chicks, which has also found extraordinary success on Netflix. In addition to Jackman and Ferguson, Reminiscence also stars Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, and Brett Cullen. The film currently sits at nearly identical scores of 37% and 38% from critics and audiences respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.

Well, this is a bit of a shocker.
HBO has confirmed the demise of the 1980s basketball drama Winning Time.
The series wrapped its sophomore run Sunday night and was canceled the same day as the finale.
Series showrunner Max Borenstein alluded to the cancellation with a message on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Not the ending that we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love," he wrote.
Fans commented their thoughts on the shocking decision below the Tweet.
"So sorry Max. I eagerly anticipated each episode and enjoyed the hell out of the series," said one fan, adding:
"Congratulations on making something so creatively successful as Winning Time."
"Everything I anticipated it could be and even better when you told me about it at that lunch way back when," said another fan.
"Disappointed it couldn't at least get to Riley's promise of a repeat, but everything you did do was great.
