‘Once Upon a Mattress’, ‘Jelly’s Last Jam’ & ‘Titanic’ To Get Encores! Treatment; Ephraim Sykes & Jennifer Holliday Set For City Center Gala ‘Pal Joey’
Image
Following a season that saw its Broadway transfers Into the Woods and Parade score a slew of Tony Award nominations, the New York City Center has announced what’s coming next for its celebrated Encores! series: Once Upon a Mattress, Jelly’s Last Jam and Titanic.

The 30th annual Encores! season of concert stagings will kick off in January with Sutton Foster playing Princess Winnifred the Woebegone in Once Upon a Mattress (January 24-28) – the role made famous in 1959 by then-up-and-comer Carol Burnett. Directed by Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet with a new concert adaptation by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, the comical update of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea features such musical numbers as “Shy” and “In a Little While” with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer.

‘The Wonder Years’ Co-Stars Alley Mills & Dan Lauria Reunite For Off Broadway’s ‘Morning’s At Seven’
Image
Alley Mills will be reunited with her The Wonder Years husband Dan Lauria in the new Off Broadway production of Paul Osborn’s classic stage comedy Morning’s At Seven, a reteaming that comes as Mills replaces the recently injured Judith Ivey.

Mills, who stars on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, joins Lauria and other Morning’s At Seven cast members Lindsay Crouse, Alma Cuervo, Tony Roberts, John Rubinstein, Keri Safran, Jonathan Spivey and Patty McCormack (the latter most famously remembered as evil little Rhoda Penmark from 1956’s The Bad Seed).

The original Wonder Years mom was cast in the role of Arry after Ivey left the production due a torn tendon. (Nancy Ringham was a temporary replacement until Mills could join.)

“We are thrilled to have Alley Mills join our Morning’s At Seven family,” said producer Julian Schlossberg in a statement. “In the theatre, anything can happen,...

Truman’s Inaugural Ball and was a bridesmaid at the first of Elizabeth Taylor’s weddings, died of natural causes today at her home in Wilton, Connecticut. She was 92.

Susan Granger, a friend of the actress and spokesperson for her family, told Deadline that Powell died peacefully at the house she shared for many years with her husband, the actor and publicist Dick Moore, who died in 2015.

Powell, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, continued to appear on stage well into the 21st Century, making her career among her generation’s sturdiest.

Born Suzanne Lorraine Burce in Portland, Oregon, Powell was already a locally successful singer – she...

Danny Aiello Does It His Way
Danny Aiello's raspy voice is even raspier than usual. He is suffering from vocal strain. Nevertheless, he is excited to talk about his current project, Susan Charlotte's "The Shoemaker," in which he plays the title role, a character who reaches high emotional levels. It's not surprising his voice is tired. Now running Off-Broadway at Theatre Row's Acorn Theatre, the play is set on Sept. 11, 2001, and recounts the tormented experiences of a shoemaker, an Italian Jewish Holocaust survivor (Aiello), encountering two disparate women (Alma Cuervo, Lucy DeVito), who unwittingly force him to confront the ghosts of his past along with his horror in the immediate wake of the terrorist attacks."The Shoemaker" has journeyed from one-act play reading to a film short ("A Broken Sole") to its current two-act staged incarnation, and Aiello has been with it every step of the way, delighted to be reprising the fleshed-out role on.
