Billy Joel’s Drummer Liberty DeVitto Plays Deftones Song as He Hears It for First Time: Watch
Image
Drumeo’s “For the First Time” video series puts professional drummers on the spot, forcing them to improvise over notable songs they’ve never heard before. The latest “First Time” clip from the instructional platform sees longtime Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto in front of the cameras.

As we saw in a previous clips featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith challenged to play a Thirty Seconds to Mars song and Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy getting pitted against a Nickelback tune, the Drumeo engineers revel in finding a song that’s both new and challenging to the drummer. In the case of the 73-year-old DeVitto, he was presented with Deftones‘ “My Own Summer (Shove It).”

Initially, DeVitto begins taking notes as he hears a drumless version of the iconic Around the Fur opener. But when the chorus hits and Chino Moreno’s screams come in, DeVitto drops his pen...

Sleep Token Drummer Gives Band’s First Video Interview: “I Was Heavily into Joey Jordison”
Image
The drummer of Sleep Token, known only as II, has granted the first video interview with any member of the mysterious UK alt-metal band.

II spoke with drum-training platform Drumeo, which featured an hour-long video of the drummer discussing his influences and playing style, as well as running through 12 playthroughs of Sleep Token songs.

Considering the band’s music draws comparisons to classic alternative metal acts such as Slipknot and Deftones, it’s no surprise that II cited those bands’ percussionists among his core influences.

“These days, I would describe my playing style as a mixture of that signature Abe Cunningham, Deftones inspired, heavier sort of grooving with a linear style gospel influence,” II said, later adding: “When I first started playing, I — like many others in my generation — was heavily into drummers such as [late Slipknot drummer] Joey Jordison, Matt from the band Mudvayne, as well as the more extreme speed players such as Derek Roddy.

Gojira Release Fiery Single ‘Into the Storm’ Ahead of New Album ‘Fortitude’
Image
Gojira have released “Into the Storm,” the fourth single from their upcoming album Fortitude. The Grammy-nominated band will release their latest LP on April 30th via Roadrunner Records.

“This song is infused with the concept of civil disobedience,” Gojira vocalist and guitarist Joe Duplantier said. “Acting accordingly with our deepest wisdom and standing for what is precious and good in this world. The only possible revolution is the one that blossoms from within us. Change will come from individuals. Laws are meant to be bent and shaped to our vital needs.

R.I.P. Deftones bassist Chi Cheng
Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has died. He was 42 and had been in a semi-conscious state since a 2008 car accident. Cheng co-founded the band with Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, and Abe Cunningham in the late 1980s, performing on the band’s first five albums—three of which went platinum. He won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance with the group in 2001 for “Elite,” from the record White Pony. Deftones’ debut, 1995’s Adrenaline, wasn’t an initial success, but after the group did some extensive touring, it ultimately ended up spending 21 weeks on the Billboard Heatseekers chart ...

Deftones Brixton Academy Feb 20th Review
So, London.

It’s a hell of a town, and I’ve been visiting for a couple of days – eating fine, multi-cultured cuisine, exploring the sights, hearing the sounds, walking through the past alongside evolution in the Natural History Museum, roaming an ice cold Hyde Park to mainly watch the ducks versus swans and what-have-yous on the Serpentine (you know, giving them names and personalities and back stories), seeing what’s-his-face from off of being singer for Hard-Fi in Chancery Lane tube station and of course visiting the Tower of London, not to tickle the jewels and work the sceptre but mostly to be embarrassed by the absurdity of them all. The real stars of the Tower of London are the ravens.

Oh, and the jewelled guns in the White Tower. Amazing. That’s just rock ’n’ roll, that is.

Anyhow, tourism, and pretending I’ve more money than skirting...

Deftones Treat Fans To Intimate Show In La, Debut New Song
By Zachary Swickey

Los Angeles – Few rock bands that emerged during the '90s nu-metal phase still exist today and practically none have the amount of respect and admiration the Deftones receive from their musical peers. Countless bands cite the Sacramento-based group as a big influence on their music.

Saturday night (July 28) the Deftones stopped by the Troubadour in Los Angeles – an incredibly tiny, sweaty 300-capacity club – to perform their first proper show in nearly a year and their only solo date before heading out on a co-headlining amphitheater tour with System of a Down prior to their new, still-untitled album dropping on October 9. Soad drummer John Dolmayan and bassist Shavo Odadjian were both in attendance, enjoying the set alongside Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato.

The Deftones took no time dusting off the cobwebs as they erupted straight into “Rocket Skates” – one of the heavier numbers off their last release,...
