Photos taken from the set of The Boys season 5 show the sinister lengths that Homelander (Antony Starr) will go to quell any resistance by anti-supe protesters. The dark Prime Video superhero series imagines a world where the profession of powered heroes is dominated by corrupt corporations and dangerous and power-hungry narcissistic individuals. The fifth and final season of The Boys will see Homelander finally gain control of the world, as the titular group is divided and imprisoned.

What constitutes a horror movie is often a matter of debate, but a good place to begin is by measuring how much a film can instill fear in viewers. Traditionally, though, without some extreme violence, a few jumpscares, or a supernatural presence or setting, a scary movie doesn't just become a horror movie. Unless a viewer feels an extreme physical reaction to a visual, auditory, or conceptual stimulus, a movie doesn't necessarily become a proper horror film.
Often, horror movies are equally creepy and fun, and sometimes, horror comedy movies can be purely hilarious, bordering on not being horror movies at all. Because of its flexible definition, horror is easy to blend with other genres, and similarly, other genres can easily create viewing experiences that closely resemble the experience of watching a horror film. Drama films, especially ones that rely on anxieties and interpersonal dynamics for their dramatic turns,...

The Boys season 5 gets a new update, with creator Eric Kripke unveiling an intriguing title for episode 1. First released on Prime Video in 2019, the hit superhero satire has become one of the streamer's most popular offerings. After the release of season 4 earlier this year, which continues Billy Butcher's (Karl Urban) bloody quest for vengeance against Homelander (Antony Starr), The Boys season 5 is confirmed to bring the show to an end, with production getting underway in Toronto this month.
Kripke now takes to X, formerly Twitter, to share an image of the script title page for The Boys season 5, episode 1, revealing the title to be "Fifteen Inches Of Sheer Dynamite." The title page also confirms that episode 1 was penned by Paul Grellong and directed by Phil Sgriccia, both of whom are also executive producers on the show. Kripke's post includes a "#DayOne" hashtag, seemingly confirming that filming is now underway. Check out Kripke's post below:

The Boys season 5 adds a new actor to its cast, as a Stranger Things star joins as a new Supe. Created by Eric Kripke, Prime Video's hit superhero parody show returned for season 4 earlier this year, continuing Billy Butcher's (Karl Urban) quest for vengeance against Homelander (Antony Starr) and Vought. The Boys season 5 is now confirmed to bring the show to an end, with a roster of both new and old Supes assembling for the final episodes.
Variety now reports that actor Mason Dye has been cast in The Boys season 5 as Bombsight. Though details regarding the character haven't yet been released, Bombsight was mentioned in season 4 as a Supe who appeared in "The Curse of Fu Manchu," a 1950s Vought superhero movie. As for where audiences will have seen Dye previously, the actor recently appeared in Stranger Things season 4 as Jason Carver, a Hawkins High basketball star and supporting antagonist.

Sports movies often have inspirational coaches who lead their teams to victory, but there are also some terrible coaches which span from irresponsible and boorish to homicidal. The best sports movie coaches can be just as inspiring as the athletes, and some movies focus on them rather than the characters on the field. However, some movies, especially sports comedies, have laughably bad coaches instead.
Bad coaches in sports movies are often the villains, like Kreese in The Karate Kid or Hung in Shaolin Soccer. They aren't just bad because they're ineffective; they also knowingly endanger the athletes due to their obsessions with winning. Whether they should be fired or arrested, bad coaches can make sports movies much more interesting by raising the stakes and providing compelling villains.

Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, is a watershed thriller for its critique of class, its queer undertones, and its enduring legacy. The novel inspired multiple sequels, as well as several film adaptations, the most significant of which was Anthony Minghella’s Oscar nominated 1999 film of the same name.
Showtime commissioned a series based on the original book from writer/director Steve Zaillian back in 2021, but the project eventually went to Netflix. Now the eight episode limited series is out in full, and the new iteration is more sumptuous, more faithful to the source material, and more queer (from a contemporary perspective) than any other iteration.

An interview with Rhea Seehorn referred to Chuck McGill (Michael McKean) as the villain of Better Call Saul, but the character is far more complex than that. The Breaking Bad spinoff was designed to shed further light on criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) by depicting how Jimmy McGill eventually embraced the Goodman persona. The introduction of Jimmy's brother Chuck added a new dimension to the show that perfectly flipped the premise of its parent show. "Slipping" Jimmy McGill is a former low-level criminal who wants to become an upstanding member of society by becoming a great lawyer like his brother.
However, there were many stumbling blocks on Jimmy's road to redemption, and the high standards of his brother Chuck were one of these stumbling blocks. That didn't necessarily make Chuck the villain of Better Call Saul as Rhea Seehorn suggested in her interview on The Rich Eisen Show. As...

Criminal Minds has featured many celebrity guest stars over the years, including Evan Peters, who appeared in an episode in season 5. The show follows FBI agents who work for the Behavior Analysis Unit and have a special talent for figuring out why serial killers and kidnappers act the way that they do. As with many procedural shows, new one-off characters are introduced each week, and many of those roles have been filled by well-known actors or newcomers who later became famous. The popularity of Criminal Minds has resulted in over 16 fast-paced seasons and a recent revival, Criminal Minds: Evolution.
Evan Peters is known for American Horror Story, where he's played numerous unnerving characters. His Criminal Minds appearance aired in 2010, one year before he began his breakout work on Ryan Murphy's dark anthology series. Mr. Mercedes has found a new home in NBCUniversal’s recently launched premium streaming platform, Peacock.
The move to Peacock yields a new lease on life for Mr. Mercedes, the Stephen King adaptation crime series, which started life in 2017 as a broadcast offering on the AT&T-owned, DirecTV-exclusive Audience Network, only to be left derelict with an uncertain future after the channel’s dissolution this past January. Updated: The first three seasons of “Mr. Mercedes” have been acquired by Peacock.
The show previously aired on Audience Network but that network was shut down by AT&T in January, leaving the show’s remaining scripted shows in limbo. “Mr. Mercedes” aired its third season late last year, with the series having received strong critical acclaim throughout its run.
As part of the deal, Seasons 1 and 2 of “Mr. Mercedes” will stream exclusively on Peacock. Both of those seasons will debut on Oct. 15 on the streamer, while the premiere date for Season 3 is yet to be determined.
Based on the New York Times Best-Selling Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King, “Mr. Mercedes” follows a retired detective (Brendan Gleeson) who is tormented by a serial killer (Harry Treadaway) through a series of letters and e-mails, causing him to set out on a dangerous and potentially felonious crusade to protect his loved ones and himself.

Batter up, hear that call — the time has come, for one and all, to yell about how “A League of Their Own,” directed by Penny Marshall, is the best sports movie of all time. Penny Marshall’s fourth film, after great movies like “Awakenings” and “Big,” has an ease to its execution that proves reminiscent of the world’s greatest sports heroes — so good it doesn’t seem that hard.
Except, of course, it was hard — Marshall and writers Kim Wilson & Kelly Candaele (story) and Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel (screenplay) took on a period piece with a massive ensemble that had to deliver both thrilling baseball sequences as well as the subtle, powerful message about just what women are capable of.

Yet another Stephen King novel is set to get the TV treatment. While folks may be more dead set on seeing some of Stephen King’s older work — like It, The Dark Tower, Firestarter, or The Mist — on the big and small screen, we can’t forget that the dude’s been writing pretty great novels in recent years as well. Most recently, King’s put out a trilogy of hard-boiled detective novels. The stories started with Mr. Mercedes, continued with Finder Keepers, and concluded with End of Watch.
We’ve known for some time that the first book would be adapted for the small screen, but after being announced, back-burnered, and then brought back to the fold, it became easy to lose track over what the actual status of the project was. Now, Audience Network has announced that the 10-episode limited series has a premiere date of Wednesday, August...

Better Call Saul shelved all the drug-trade stuff this week and went full-on courtroom drama, building to a climactic brother-vs.-brother showdown between Jimmy and Chuck.

The big lie here is Chuck’s condition: He’s invited over his ex-wife Rebecca for dinner, but makes up a story about his electricity...

‘Better Call Saul’ Review: Bob Odenkirk and Michael McKean Spar in an Ultimate Clash of the Brothers
Last Week’S Review: ‘Better Call Saul’ Review: It’s Strategy Versus Will in an Episode of Showdowns
Case Summary
It’s the trial we’ve been waiting for, because Chuck (Michael McKean) is on a mission: To get Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) disbarred. Not suspended, but disbarred. The episode is, therefore, largely devoted to Jimmy’s hearing before the New Mexico Bar Association — the testimony of Howard Hamlin, followed by the playing of the fateful tape, and then Chuck’s own turn on the stand.
This has a number of repercussions, because Jimmy’s got a plan that (like so many of his plans) involve factors outside of the legal system. First off, it’s the arrival of Rebecca (Ann Cusack) to throw Chuck off his game — then there’s hiring Huell (yes, “Breaking Bad’s” Huell!) to plant a secret battery on Chuck’s body (something to which Jimmy...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The ultimate anti-disaster movie. A supremely gripping and powerfully emotional film about, paradoxically, what happens when everything works as it should. I’m “biast” (pro): I remember that day vividly…
I’m “biast” (con): …but I worried about how it would be dramatized
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I was still living in New York in January 2009 when Chesley Sullenberger landed a commercial airliner full of passengers on the Hudson River.
Landed a commercial airliner on the Hudson River.
Not in. On.
And almost everyone walked away unhurt. A bit cold and wet. One flight attendant got a nasty cut on her leg. We didn’t know that at the time. All we knew was that a goddamn plane had landed on the river and everything was fine.
It almost sounds like that...

Yesterday, I got the chance to finally take a look at Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks’ collaboration Sully. The film is quite good, showcasing both heavyweights at peak skill. This week could have been a pretty barren one, but Sully saves it, just like he did all of the passengers on his plane. In depicting the Miracle on the Hudson, Eastwood could have fallen back on his lazier tendencies, while Hanks could have coasted on his likability, but neither do. This is a high effort and tight work that represents one of Eastwood’s best directorial outings to date. Frankly, it’s a must see and a definite Academy Award contender. Once again, in case you don’t know by now, Sully is a biopic about Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Tom Hanks), the pilot who became a national hero. We all learned about Captain Sullenberger, or Sully, after he glided his...

Later this week, Clint Eastwood will unleash a new film into the world in Sully, which debuted a few days ago at the Telluride Film Festival. Early word is very solid, suggesting a potential awards player this year. I’ll be writing about that movie shortly, but for now, I want to look at Eastwood’s career to date, both as an actor as well as a filmmaker. Eastwood is a unique one, that’s for sure. In just a day or two I’ll be back with a straight Sully piece, but right now, it’s more or less just going to be a look at Eastwood and what he’s done so far. Enjoy! A review of tonight's Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I do the Carol Burnett thing with my ear... "You don't save me. I save me." -Kim What an oddly structured show Better Call Saul can be at times. Throughout the series, Jimmy and Mike rarely interact — or do it briefly, as happens here when Jimmy expresses concern about Mike's battered face — and are moving through stories with completely different tones, usually featuring different characters (though both of them have run afoul of Tuco and Nacho at some point), and at times feeling like different genres. Their lives and stories are destined to become far more entwined, but at the moment, Jimmy's in a legal dramedy and Mike's not only in a hard-boiled crime show, but one that for now has much more of a direction connection to Breaking Bad. Saul is far from the...
