For cinephiles of a certain proclivity, a new David Cronenberg movie is a true event.
The director, who just turned 82, has a filmography so singular and distinct that the word “Cronenbergian” has become an adjective and if somebody uses it you know exactly what they mean – twisted, visionary and usually dealing with body horror or technological investigation (oftentimes both).
Cronenberg’s latest, “The Shrouds,” is one of the filmmaker’s very best, most personal movies and, since it premiered last summer at the Cannes Film Festival, the wait has been excruciating.
But now that it’s here, how can you watch it? Read on to find out.
What is the release date?
As of April 25, “The Shrouds” is now in theaters nationwide. It was in limited release last week but is now playing everywhere. As it should be.

Audiences hungry for David Cronenberg’s infamous brand of body horror may have hoped that 2022’s Crimes of the Future marked his return to the genre. That film, which formed an unofficial trilogy that began with 1983’s Videodrome and continued in 1999’s eXistenZ, featured several callbacks to the Canadian director’s recurring visual and thematic interests.
The Shrouds, Cronenberg’s latest, is even less of a genre film than Crimes of the Future, though it does share its predecessor’s same dark sense of humour, as well as the director’s tendency to revisit or reconsider his previous work.
The film is ostensibly set in 2023, four years after the death of Karsh (Vincent Cassel)’s wife, Becca (Diane Kruger). Becca died of bone cancer and Karsh has yet to recover, as the opening scene of him crying during a visit to the dentist proves.
The introductory scenes also establish the...

David Cronenberg would like to have a few words with you about death.
There have, of course, been an abundance of folks who’ve shuffled off this mortal coil within the Canadian filmmaker’s nearly six decades’ worth of movies, often in the most baroque, grotesque manner possible. (Who could ever forget this? Or this? Or even this?) No one dies in a Grand Guignol-style manner in The Shrouds, Cronenberg’s chilly, chic mix of conspiracy thriller, corporate-espionage drama, and cryptic-in-more-ways-than-one meditation on mourning routines; apologies if that constitutes a spoiler.

David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which has been making the festival rounds lately (you can read what JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray thought of it Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode. So a feature film it is, and Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the film, with their plan being to give it a theatrical release next month. The Shrouds will be reaching theatres in New York and Los Angeles on April 18th, then will expand nationwide on April 25th. With those dates right around the corner, a trailer has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above.

Stars: Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, Sandrine Holt, Elizabeth Saunders, Jennifer Dale, Eric Weinthal | Written and Directed by David Cronenberg
The Shrouds, the latest film from director David Cronenberg is a poorly conceived hodge-podge of ideas about sex, death and technology, with a dash of bog-standard body horror thrown in. Tonally, it’s all over the place, which means it fails to satisfy on a number of different levels.
As the film begins, it feels like jet jet-black comedy, except you’re not sure just how much you’re actually meant to be laughing. It opens in a restaurant, where tech genius Karsh (Vincent Cassel) – who also owns the restaurant – is entertaining a beautiful young woman (Elizabeth Saunders as Gray Foner) on a first date. Abruptly, he insists she accompanies him outside to the adjoining cemetery – which he also owns – so that he can show her not just the...

Diane Kruger is looking chic at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival!
The 48-year-old actress wore a black silk blouse with a lace skirt and a black veil as she attended the premiere of her new movie The Shrouds on Wednesday (Sept. 11) at the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Canada.
Joining Diane at the premiere were her costars Sandrine Holt, Elizabeth Saunders, Jennifer Dale, and Jeff Yung along with director David Cronenberg.
In The Shrouds, Vincent Cassel plays Karsh, “a technological entrepreneur still grieving the death of his wife Becca (Kruger) four years earlier. He has thrown himself into his work, devising technologically augmented burial shrouds that let loved ones watch their lost family members decompose. It’s the closest thing to being there with them — and no, it’s not for everyone. But when his wife’s plot is among several desecrated in an apparent act of vandalism, Karsh slips into...

“The Ugly Chickens,” a short film from “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin, is set to premiere at Hollyshorts Film Festival.
Starring Felicia Day (“Supernatural”), the short is based on Howard Waldrop’s Nebula Award-winning famous story. Science fiction author Waldrop was a friend of Martin’s. He died in 2024. Martin has plans to adapt a further three of Waldrop’s short stories into films.
Martin said: “Howard saw a rough cut of [“The Ugly Chickens”] before he died. He liked it, which pleases me no end. I only wish we had been able to screen the final cut for him.”
Jennifer Dale (“Coroner”), Natalie Charles (“Suits”) and Mag Ruffman (“Alias Grace”) also star in the short, which was shot on location in Toronto,
“Upon learning that the supposedly extinct dodo bird might still exist, ornithology professor Paula Linberl sets out on a cross-country expedition to unravel the mystery,” reads the synopsis.

Netflix executives rejected David Cronenberg's concept for a 10-episode series, leading him to turn it into a film instead. The Shrouds is deeply personal for Cronenberg, echoing his own experiences with loss and grief after his wife's death. Despite mixed reviews, Cronenberg defends the film's narrative direction and highlights its exploration of conspiracy theories surrounding death.
The Shrouds from seminal director David Cronenberg premiered at Cannes this week, but its journey began as a concept for a 10-episode series pitched to Netflix. During a press conference for the sci-fi thriller, Cronenberg revealed that Netflix execs rejected the project (via The Hollywood Reporter). According to Cronenberg, the streamer's executives liked the script for the first episode but did not want to move forward after the second episode.
"They said and this is a very Hollywood thing to say 'It's not what we fell in love with in the room,'" Cronenberg said.

Susan Ireland could use a spa day. The character, played to winning ends by Sarah Levy on SYFYs SurrealEstate, has been facing extreme challenges in her lavish new house in season two of the hit supernatural dramedy. Let’s just say that when the house’s communication system traps you inside of it and then pulls a Carol Burnett, saying, “I’ve enjoyed having you here these past few days,” something is horribly off.
It’s one of the many inventive twists found in season two of the show, headlined by Tim Rozon (Wynonna Earp) and Sarah Levy, who previously starred alongside each other in the Emmy-winning comedy series Schitt's Creek. Their new series also stars Maurice Dean Wint, Tennille Read, Adam Korson, Savannah Basley, Jennifer Dale, and Allison Woolridge. The plots follow real estate agent Luke Roman (Rozon) and an elite team of specialists as they take on cases nobody else can.

"I've always had the feeling that the universe can still surprise us." Screen Media has debuted an official trailer for the indie drama Clara, which premiered at the Toronto and Sitges Film Festivals last year. This indie relationship drama is about a hard-headed astronomy named Dr. Isaac Bruno, played by Patrick J. Adams, who is searching for life out in the universe. One day he meets an impressive artist named Clara, and their connection changes him forever, leading them both on a profound discovery within the cosmos. Troian Bellisario co-stars as Clara, along with Will Bowes, Jennifer Dale, Ennis Esmer, Gabrielle Graham, and Kristen Hager. This film reminds me quite a bit of I Origins, but with an eye on the cosmos above all else. It's a smart, lovely, fascinating film that I would describe as an indie gem worth discovering. Here's the first official Us trailer (+ poster) for Akash Sherman's Clara,...

When his wife and son leave for a vacation, mild-mannered businessman Bart (Peter Weller) stays behind to get some work done on his latest project.
However, that all changes when he becomes obsessed with capturing a mischievous rodent that begins to cause destruction to his beautiful home, one expensive object at a time.
Bart becomes fixated with capturing the rat so much that he is absentminded during his work hours and hard at work at setting up traps during the evening. At one point, he even interrupts a perfectly pleasant dinner amongst colleagues with random statistics and facts about rats. Yes, these facts are all startling (if true) but even still, his descent into what appears to be madness is a little out of the blue.
Of Unknown Origin is billed as a “suspense-horror” but it feels more like an oddball dark comedy with very slight undertones of horror.
