In Doug Liman's (Edge of Tomorrow) remake Road House, Jake Gyllenhaal steps into the role of former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton, previously played by Patrick Swayze (as John Dalton) in the 1989 original. The movie adopts the Og's action-packed spirit, but takes the story to a new location in the Florida Keys, where the cast and crew filmed on location with real-life UFC fighter Conor McGregor.

The upcoming movie is a modern remake of Patrick Swayze's 1989 classic, which earned $61.6 million on a budget of only $15 million. Family Guy regularly references the movie. Uttering the words "Road House" after overwhelming violence has been one of Peter's catchphrases since 2009.

Road House stands apart from other '80s action movies with its unique "be nice" rule, where the protagonist Dalton strives to maintain peace before resorting to violence. The impressive choreography and fitting music in Road House make the fight scenes captivating and well-executed. Dalton, the troubled yet good-hearted protagonist, uses his skills to give the bad guys their comeuppance and avenge the death of a long-time friend.

When it comes to beat ‘em up flicks from the '80s, there are so many worthy contenders to consider. From Van Damme, to Schwarzenegger to Stallone, there’s no shortage of bad guys eating a knuckle sandwich with a side of righteous vengeance. But let’s not forget about Patrick Swayze’s contribution to the punch fest in the form of 1989’s Road House; the film where Swayze is nice until he has a compelling reason not to be.

All IndieWire needed was a two-minute, 48-second trailer to declare the director 100 percent right about his “Road House” remake being tailor-made for movie theaters. Liman’s larger point, presented in a first-person essay on Deadline touting the importance of theatrical, is also correct — but it seems to be especially accurate for this film, which he’s already touted as possibly his best effort to date.

The trailer, released on Thursday, opens with a many-on-1 (the one is protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal) parking lot brawl. It then takes it to the cage; some of the matches are sanctioned, others are definitely not. Later comes the many bar fights, some gunplay, an alligator attack, a high-speed Ferrari chase, arson, a head-on boat collision, and Conor McGregor going nutso with a golf club.

Carla Guigino's involvement creates an opportunity for familiar faces in Flanagan's adaptation of The Dark Tower. Bruce Greenwood's experience with supernatural creatures makes him an excellent choice for the role of Father Callahan. Zach Gilford's portrayal of realistic struggles in Midnight Mass would serve well in depicting Eddie Dean's challenges with addiction and loss.

Mike Flanagan is perhaps the single most accomplished and adept Stephen King adapter ever, and his cast of regular collaborators present some interesting opportunities to cast his latest project, The Dark Tower. The beloved book series had been partially adapted before as a woefully underwhelming film, 2017's The Dark Tower, but Flanagan's track record with King's properties promises a more faithful version of the story. The episodic format will also be more fitting of the seven-book series, giving more time for characters to develop.

Former Kinks keyboard player John Gosling has died. He was 75.

The Kinks announced his death on the band’s official social media accounts, writing, “We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of John Gosling. We are sending our condolences to John’s wife and family.”

Drummer Mick Avory wrote, “Today we lost a dear friend and colleague, he was a great musician and had a fantastic sense of humour… which made him popular member of the band, he leaves us with some happy memories. God Bless him….”

Guitarist and lead singer Dave Davies said in part that he was “dismayed” and “deeply upset” by the death of his “friend and important contributor to the Kinks music.”

“I will hold deep affection and love for him in my heart always,” Davies wrote. “Great musician and a great man.”

Director Mike Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep" is neither excellent nor outright sloppy, but it does make for an interesting viewing experience. It is tense and suspenseful in parts but not scary or frightening at all.

Based on Stephen King's 2013 novel of the same name, which is the sequel to his 1977 novel, "The Shining", the film combines elements of the 1977 novel and its 1980 film adaptation of the same name, directed by Stanley Kubrick.

It is the story of Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) 40 years after the terrifying events that occurred in "The Shining", where he was traumatised by one of its ghosts -- the rotting woman of Room 237 of the Overlook Hotel. He was taught by the ghost of Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly) to lock such ghosts in imaginary "boxes" in his mind.

Doctor Sleep is the continuation of the haunted house nightmare first put on the page by Stephen King and brought to life on the big screen by Stanley Kubrick. As we wrote in our review, director Mike Flanagan has made an adaptation worthy of King's novel while also paying tribute to the Kubrick movie. From Dan coping with the ghosts of his past to taking us back to the terrifying Overlook Hotel, Doctor Sleep is largely a triumph that celebrates every version of The Shining story. 

As you can imagine, an movie this ambitious -- a King adaptation told through the visual language set by Kubrick -- features quite a few nods and callbacks to both the novels and the beloved movie.

Any reservations fans might have had about the upcoming Doctor Sleep adaptation might be eradicated now that the feature has received a major endorsement from someone who knows the source material better than anyone else. Bruce Greenwood is the latest actor to join the cast of Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. According to Deadline, he will be taking on the role of a character named Dr. John.

There are not details on who this character is, but in the book there is a character named John Dalton who is the family doctor of Abra Stone and her family. That could be the part, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Greenwood joins the previously cast Ewan McGregor as the grown up Danny Torrance, Rebecca Ferguson as Rose The Hat, Carl Lumbly, Alex Essoe, Zahn McClarnon, and Kyliegh Curran landed the role of Abra Stone, the granddaughter of Jack Torrance, who also has the gift of ‘The Shining’.

Warner Brothers' adaptation of Stephen King's sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, is happening. The sequel is directed by horror auteur Mike Flanagan, who helmed Oculus and Gerald's Game, and who recently directed one of Netflix's very best films, Gerald's Game, which itself was a King adaptation.

Doctor Sleep first arrived in 2013 as a novel by King, 36 years after the publication of The Shining, and stars Danny Torrance, who is still coping with the aftermath of what happened so many years ago at the Overlook Hotel.
