Saved! at 20: Director Brian Dannelly Reflects on His Teenage Christian Comedy and Plans for a Sequel
Image
It might be too on-the-nose to call Saved! a minor miracle of a movie, but how else would you describe Brian Dannelly’s faith-centric satire? Since it was released in arthouses and multiplexes 20 years ago this week, it’s remained one of the few teenage comedies brave enough to explore and critique the contemporary Christian high school experience without relying on broad fundamentalist humor, cheap caricatures, or treacly after-school messaging. Within modern Hollywood, it felt––and still feels––like a true outlier, a nuanced slice of religious life with a surprisingly deep roster of young indie talents that its creator still can’t believe was even made.

Set at a Christian high school, Saved! stars Jena Malone as 17-year-old Mary, a born-again believer who offers up her virginity to convert her gay boyfriend Dean (Chad Faust). The plan ultimately fails––Dean is sent to conversion therapy and Mary gets pregnant,...

Peyton List Will Return for School Spirits Season 2 on Paramount+
Image
Peyton List will take another ethereal plunge into the hallways of Split River High. Paramount+ has renewed the supernatural series School Spirits for a second season. Peyton List will be reprising her role as Maddie, the spirited (pun intended) protagonist as per Collider.

The renewal comes as the streaming service looks to keep its grip on the Young Adult (YA) audience – and who better to pull in the masses than the phantoms of high school students with unfinished business?

In School Spirits, we're introduced to Maddie, a teenager who finds herself haunting her school postmortem. However, the afterlife is not as lonely as one might assume. Maddie discovers that she is not the only ghost roaming the corridors of Split River High. A handful of her peers, who have also met untimely ends, share her spectral existence.

But what sets Maddie apart is her unique ability to communicate with the living.

This experience changed our lives forever and we’re so grateful to have found this incredible new family. But today we received the disappointing news that we’re not getting a second season. We know how much it’s meant to the fans and while we’re heartbroken we won’t get to make more episodes, we wanna thank everyone for watching and falling in love with Brodie, Mingus, Ruthie, Noah, Shar, Julian, Daddius, Bussey, Marvin, Judy and Brenda. Sharon Gless, Hal Sparks, Michelle Clunie, Robert Gant, Thea Gill, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Scott Lowell, and Peter Paige in Queer as Folk (2000)
The trailer for Peacock’s “Queer as Folk” hints at developing romances, pride events and at least one mother trying to pry into her child’s new relationship.

The show is a reimagining of the groundbreaking British series created by Russell T. Davies it follows “a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.” The tragedy is also heavily hinted at in the trailer.

“Like most queer ‘90s kids, I had a unique relationship with the original ‘Queer as Folk,'” Stephen Dunn, creator, executive producer, writer and director of the Peacock version, previously said in a statement. “Growing up, I was desperate for any sort of connection with people like me. It was the first time I really felt seen. The show offered a new paradigm – one where we could accept and celebrate queer love, families, and communities on a global stage.

Showrunner Stephen Dunn (“Closet Monster”), who also writes, directs, and executive produces the Peacock original series. Here the creator reimagines the beloved original show created by Russell T Davies to center on a group of diverse, unapologetically queer friends in New Orleans whose lies are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy. The original British series ran for two seasons from 1999 to 2000. “Queer As Folk” later was revived in the U.S. on Showtime with a five-season run from 2000 to 2005. Dunn called the series his “awakening,” and while the Peacock show is not a reboot, the all-queer writing team uses the original show as inspiration.

Polly Bergen dead at 84: ‘First woman president of the U.S.A.,’ former mistress of Tony Soprano’s father Emmy Award-winning actress Polly Bergen — whose roles ranged from the first U.S.A. woman president in Kisses for My President to the former mistress of both Tony Soprano’s father and John F. The 84-year-old Bergen, a heavy smoker for five decades, had been suffering from emphysema and other ailments since the 1990s. Her father was an illiterate construction worker while her mother got only as far as the third grade. The family...

The top 25 underappreciated films of 2004
Odd List Ryan Lambie Simon Brew 9 Jan 2014 - 06:25

We head back a decade to look at a few films that deserve more attention. Here’s our list of 25 underappreciated movies of 2004...

Think back to 2004, and you might dredge up hazy memories of the computer-generated fairytale sequel Shrek 2, Alfonso’s Harry Potter installment, The Prisoner Of Azkaban, or maybe Mel Gibson’s phenomenally successful Passion Of The Christ.

It’s rather less likely that you’ll remember some of the films on this list. You’re probably aware of the drill by now: we’ve gone back into our distant, beer-addled memories to find 25 of the less commonly-lauded movies from the year 2004.

Some of them did reasonably well at the time, but appear to have been forgotten since (especially the one eclipsed by its own internet meme), while others were coolly received by the public or critics (and sometimes...

Eiff 2013: ‘Struck By Lightning’ Review
Stars: Rebel Wilson, Chris Colfer, Dermot Mulroney, Scott Bailey, Allison Janney, Frank Noel | Written by Chris Colfer | Directed by Brian Dannelly

Review by Andrew MacArthur of The Peoples Movies

Glee’s Chris Colfer makes the jump from television to cinema with Struck By Lightning, which he adapts from his own book Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal. Despite small glimpses of well-handled humour, Colfer’s feature is essentially a self-serving vanity project that falls flat.

Colfer plays Carson Phillips, a high school student with a dream of going to Northwestern University and ultimately becoming the youngest editor of the New York Times. Phillips begins a literary magazine to increase his chances of fulfilling his dream, but negative response from his fellow students sees him turn to blackmail to make it a success.

The young actor deserves a huge amount of credit for having penned and starred in his...

Chris Colfer Talks His Screenwriting Debut 'Struck By Lightning,' and Explains Why He Didn't Cast His 'Glee' Co-Stars
Chris Colfer
Chris Colfer has already proven himself singing, dancing and acting his way into the hearts of fans worldwide in Fox's hit TV show "Glee." At the Tribeca Film Festival early last year, Colfer proved himself to be a quadruple threat after world premiering his snappy and ambitious screenwriting debut, "Struck By Lightning," to a standing ovation. The film's since been picked up by Tribeca Films and opens in select theaters this Friday (it's currently available on VOD). Colfer, who's 21, started working on the screenplay when he was 16, before "Glee" came along. He began by developing the many characters that make up his coming-of-age tale and in his junior year molded it into a 10-minute piece for a speech and debate event, Original Poetry and Prose, where he played every character. Fast forward five years later and Colfer's expanded script finds its way to the screen with "Saved" director Brian Dannelly at the helm,...

‘Glee’ Star Chris Colfer Talks Exhilarating Blackmail, High School Sarcasm and ‘Struck By Lightning’
Struck By Lightning is a huge deal for Glee star Chris Colfer – at only 22, he not only stars in the film, but also wrote the screenplay and executive produced. He has also adapted his screenplay for the film into the Ya novel Struck By Lightning: The Carson Phillips Journal, marking his second published novel after The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell. Directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), Struck by Lightning tells the story of high school overachiever Carson Phillips (Colfer) who dreams of leaving behind his small town, getting into Northwestern, and becoming a wildly successful journalist. However, these dreams come to an abrupt end when he is struck by lightning and dies. The film unfolds via Carson’s posthumous narration, as he recounts his struggles with his emotionally-challenged alcoholic mother (Allison Janney), his seldom-seen father (Dermot Mulroney) and his father’s pregnant fiancée (Christina Hendricks), but mainly how he and his best friend Malerie (Rebel Wilson...

Chris Colfer Talks Struck By Lightning, Chances of Adapting His Book The Land Of Stories Into a Movie, and Glee
The indie dramedy Struck by Lightning, written by Chris Colfer (who plays Kurt Hummel on the Fox series Glee) and directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), tells the story of high school senior Carson Phillips (Colfer), who masterminds a blackmail scheme targeting the popular kids in school, that he carries out with his best friend, Malerie (Rebel Wilson). With a mother (Allison Janney) who’s falling apart and an estranged father (Dermot Mulroney) who suddenly shows back up in his life, Carson’s path to greatness seems like it’s getting further and further out of reach. At the film’s press day, Collider spoke to Chris Colfer, in both a 1-on-1 and a roundtable interview, about deciding to write a movie script at the age of 16, having always been a very driven person when it comes to his career, that the finished product is pretty close to the structure of his original script,...

'Struck By Lightning' Interview: Roberto Aguire On His First Acting Gig, Working With Chris Colfer And Rebel Wilson
Can you imagine landing your first acting gig alongside Chris Colfer, let alone, getting the opportunity to produce the film too? Pretty sure no one else can say that besides newcomer Roberto Aguire. Just coming off graduation from Tisch School of the Arts in New York, Aguire landed a role in Colfer's Struck by Lightning just months after settling into sunny L.A. Aguire plays Emilio, a fellow student of Colfer's Caron Phillips that just so happens to add a big twist in the storyline.

While Aguire seemed extremely excited about the upcoming film, during my chat with him it was obvious how dedicated he is about the industry. As we spoke about working with the Glee star and Rebel Wilson, and his favorite moment on set, it became clear that Aguire struck a chord in his career, and we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

Review: "Struck By Lightning" Lets Chris Colfer Shine in Stormy Weather
Note - This review was originally published on April 27th. Struck By Lightning is now available on iTunes and VOD.

Spoiler alert: This review discusses plot details for the film Struck by Lightning.

Not many teen comedies bother trying to take an honest look at the real and sometimes insurmountable obstacles faced by even the best and brightest during the tumultuous high school years.

Then again, not many teen comedies begin by killing their main character off in the first 90 seconds.

Struck By Lightning, directed by Brian Dannelly and written by and starring Glee star Chris Colfer, isn't your typical teen movie. It isn't even your atypical teen movie – you know, the anti-establishment screeds spawned by the brilliant (and possibly even dangerous) Heathers that made the '90s a renaissance of outsider teen entertainment. But while everything from The Craft to Drive Me Crazy to Never Been Kissed delighted in...

Chris Colfer and Polly Bergen Brainstorm “Struck By Lightning”
What the hell is a tweet? Filmed on location at the Tribeca Film Center, writer/actor Chris Colfer and actress Polly Bergen strategize the marketing campaign behind the upcoming release of Struck By Lightning. Struck By Lightning tells the story of high school senior Carson Phillips (Colfer), obviously meant for bigger things than his close-minded small town could ever offer. On his path to greatness, destiny intervenes when he is suddenly killed by a bolt of lightning in his school parking lot. In the moments before his death, Carson recounts his last year of high school - including the disappointments and the triumphs - as he worked toward his goal of getting into Northwestern and becoming the editor of The New Yorker. Penned by Colfer himself and directed by Brian Dannelly, Struck by Lightning also stars Allison Janney, Rebel Wilson, Dermot Mulroney, Christina Hendricks, Angela Kinsey, and Sarah Hyland. Struck By Lightning – Sliff Review
High school is a tough place. We all know that. Its a struggle to survive at a time when hormones rule and pressure builds from every angle. Parents, teachers, friends, where to go to college, whether to even go to college? For Carson Phillips, everything is boiling to a point and all he wants is one simple thing… to get into his dream college.

Chris Colfer (Glee) not only stars as the sharp-tongued Carson Phillips, he wrote this darkly comical satire on the high school experience. Directed by Brian Dannelly, the film is a good fit for someone whose resume includes TV shows like Weeds, Pushing Daisies and The Unites States Of Tara. Struck By Lightning begins with the death of Carson Phillips. I know, its a risky way to start a film. After all, it goes to reason that Carson never makes it to college, but that’s not really what its all about,...

This December, Get "Struck By Lightning"
Struck by Lightning - which received a standing ovation at its 2012 Tribeca Film Festival premiere - marks the screenwriting and film acting debut of Glee's Chris Colfer and also features such standouts as Allison Janney (Juno, 'The West Wing'), Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding), Christina Hendricks ('Mad Men') and Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect). Polly Bergen, Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) and Angela Kinsey (The Office) round out the excellent ensemble cast. This coming of age 'dramedy,' thoughtfully directed by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), tells the story of Carson Phillips (Colfer), a high senior meant for bigger things than a close-minded town could ever offer. However, destiny intervenes when a bolt of lightning suddenly kills Carson as he stands in his school parking lot. Ruefully acknowledging that life is what happens while you're busy planning your future, Carson recounts the events in the last few weeks...

New Trailer for the Coming of Age Film Struck By Lightning
Here's a new trailer for Glee's Chris Colfer's first film, Struck by Lightning, that he wrote and stars in. The quirky coming of age comedy was directed by Brian Dannelly and also stars Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Hyland, Rebel Wilson and Allison Janney.

Here's a short synopsis:

After a high school student is killed by a bolt of lightning, flashbacks chronicle his exploits as he blackmails his classmates into contributing to a literary magazine he's publishing.

The movie looks like it could be decent. It looks like it has kind of a John Hughes feel to it, but only time will tell if it can really be compared to Hughes. I recently saw the film Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I thought it was great, it definitely reminded me of a Hughes film. I guess there's a chance that this one could be as well.

Glee's Chris Colfer Blackmails Classmates In Struck By Lightning Trailer
Brian Dannelly.s Struck By Lightning has been building up steam since its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival back in the spring. The indie dramedy, about a kid who is (as you might guess from the title) struck by lightning, has a buzzworthy cast and a handful of positive reviews to use as its calling card. As the movie preps for its VOD release in December, a new trailer drops, and we have it for you below (courtesy of Yahoo Movies): That.s Glee co-star Chris Colfer testing the feature-film waters to play Carson Phillips, an entrepreneurial high-schooler who dreams of becoming a successful writer, just as soon as he.s able to put the stench of his clichéd classmates behind him. But when his plans to launch a literary magazine at his school hit several roadblocks, Carson begins blackmailing his fellow students with the help of a...

Watch: Full Trailer for Chris Colfer's Teen Comedy 'Struck by Lightning'
Earlier this year, the first trailer for Struck by Lightning debuted, and it looked like a very promising screenwriting and big screen debut for "Glee" star Chris Colfer. He seems to have captured the voice of the current teenage generation, and that hasn't been done in a way that is accessible to all audiences very easily or often. Now a new trailer has arrived, and it continues to look spectacular, reminiscent of the fine work John Hughes turned in throughout the 80s. Colfer is joined by great talent like Rebel Wilson, Christina Hendricks, Sarah Hyland ("Modern Family") Allison Janney and more. This looks great! Watch it! Here's the new trailer for Brian Dannelly's Struck by Lightning originally from Yahoo: A personal raincloud can be deadly. After being struck and killed by lightning, high school student Carson Phillips recounts the way he blackmailed his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine.

Watch: Chris Colfer's Inner Mean Girl Shines In New "Struck By Lightning" Trailer
Carson just wants the glamorous life

Chris Colfer introduces the new Struck By Lightning trailer, a labor of love for the young star. In the film, Carson (Colfer) plays a small town high school student with big dreams to become the editor of the New Yorker and escape his small town existence. But when he needs to fill out his high school resume, he resorts creating a literary magazine for him to edit.

The problem is that his classmates hate him, and nobody wants to write for him. So he resorts to blackmailing them with the help of his friend Malerie (played by Rebel Wilson). The blackmail is typical high school fare, from sex to drugs. Allison Janney gives a memorable turn as Carson's mother, who thinks he'd be happy with some pharmaceutical assistance.

Colfer wrote the film, directed by Brian Dannelly, and it looks like it could be one...

Frank Ocean, of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, came out and said that his first love was a man, in a moving post to his Tumblr. Global Grind is saying that he's come out as bisexual. Rumors started spreading after a radio station noticed lyrics in his debut solo album used male pronouns, and Ocean verified it in a post of the CD liner, which is where he intended to come out. Adding a young, emerging hip-hop star to the constellation of out celebrities is a great thing, and we salute his bravery.

Tribeca Film Picks Up Chris Colfer's First Film 'Struck By Lightning'
A personal raincloud can be deadly... Some good acquisition news for an indie project we've been keeping an eye on. New York distributor Tribeca Film has announced they've acquired U.S. rights to Chris Colfer's film debut, the high school comedy Struck By Lightning. In addition to starring, Colfer also wrote the screenplay for the film, which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last April. In the dramedy, Colfer plays a high school student who, after being struck by lightning, recounts the way he blackmailed his fellow classmates into contributing to his literary magazine. We posted an early trailer for this in February. Directed "with awareness and exuberance" by Brian Dannelly (Saved!), Struck By Lightning also stars Rebel Wilson (pictured above), Allison Janney, Polly Bergen, Christina Hendricks, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Hyland and Angela Kinsey. The screenplay was written by Chris Colfer, making his breakout as a...

Sony Pictures Classics Are ‘So Excited’ for New Almodovar Film; Tribeca Get ‘Struck By Lightning’
We first knew it as The Brief Lovers; then The Standby Lovers; and, now, it’s called I’m So Excited. Annoying though these sorts of changes always, always are, I’m more bothered by the incongruity between the second and third title — just not enough to truly care.

That’s not the story at hand, either. What you should really know — and what a press release primarily tells us — is that Sony Pictures Classics have bought domestic rights to Pedro Almodóvar‘s next picture, I’m So Excited, thus continuing a long-held, well-regarded relationship that the company and filmmaker have maintained over several films. In this new comedy, a bevy of airline passengers confess deep, personal secrets when their plane appears to be on the verge of crashing. (Or a Nervous Breakdown.) [ComingSoon]
