The 90s. It was the height of gangster rap.
It was the era that transformed the touchy rivalry between Bad Boy and Death Row Records, in particular The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) and Tupac Shakur, into what media deemed the East Coast vs. West Coast rap war. Two camps that dominated rap, with the best lyricists of the time, had turned communities – that never met – against each other. Tragically, the violence surrounding that rivalry would ultimately result in the untimely deaths of both Wallace and Shakur.
No track really brings the rivalry to life like “NY 87.” It was an unreleased song from 2Pac, featuring Tha Dogg Pound, the duo consisting of Kurupt and Daz. The fiery lyrics literally stab at the heart of some of the more prominent East Coast rappers of the time, such as: The Notorious B.I.G., Jeru the Damaja, Mobb Deep and A Tribe Called Quest. Regardless...

There's a brilliant moment in the underrated, relatively obscure film I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, where Keenan Ivory Wayans sees Bernie Casey walking with a band of musicians behind him, and asks him who they are. Casey looks at him like he's an idiot and claims, "They're my theme music. Every hero's got to have some." After the film's big, ridiculous climax, Wayans has bought into it, and walks off with his own band in tow -- the wonderful 90's funk/rock/ska band Fishbone, no less.*
And it's true. Music is a critical part of film, and I don't just mean the score. I love a perfectly placed song in a movie -- there are plenty of movies with good soundtracks, but rarely is the placement of those songs as well thought-out. That's the part that I find myself obsessing over.
Last week, I presented you with a glimpse into that obsession,...

Man, we were digging in our crates this week and came across a gem. Not too long ago in New York City, Fat Joe had a show S.O.B.'s to celebrate the release of his 10th album, The Darkside, Vol. 1.
Mr. Crack brought out a host of celebs, from Redman and Joell Ortiz to M.O.P. and Jeru the Damaja. Moments before the leader of the Terror Squad touched the stage, we caught up with him and DJ Premier. Preemo gave us some insight into a song he produced for Darkside: "I'm Gone," a tribute to his late Gang Starr partner Guru.
"It was done the day Guru passed, April 19," Premier said. "I wasn't in the mood to make a beat.

New York — Fat Joe welcomed all to his concert at Sob's Tuesday night (actually, early Wednesday morning) on one condition. Don't expect any of his radio hits.
"I told y'all n---as, you want 'Lean Back,' get the f--- out!" Joe said halfway through his show. "You want 'We Thuggin',' get the f--- out! You want 'Make It Rain'? Get the f--- out. Y'all must've forgot."
Joe took it all the way back to the underground essence of his career at his concert. He's been around since 1993, been nominated for Grammy Awards and VMAs, and has had big hits. But during this concert, it was just street bangers, classic album cuts and new songs. He also paraded out a series of guests that were reigning...
