Marvel Confirms Doctor Doom Is Smarter Than Iron Man
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Avengers: War Across Time #2!Marvel has seemingly confirmed that Doctor Doom is smarter than Iron Man. In Avengers: War Across Time #2, the team visits the Fantastic Four’s headquarters in the Baxter Building, seeking a way to travel through time–and there they find Doctor Doom’s infamous time platform. Time travel is a complex and dangerous topic, but the mechanics of it elude even Iron Man–showing that Doom, at least in this instance, has outdone him.

Avengers: War Across Time #2 is written by Paul Levitz, illustrated by Alan Davis, colored by Rachelle Rosenberg and lettered by Cory Petit. The issue is set in the early days of the Avengers' history and features the classic lineup of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, the Wasp and Giant Man visiting the Baxter Building, the then-home of the Fantastic Four. The team is seeking a way to travel...

The Creator of Thor's Hammer Has Officially Taken It Back
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers: War Across Time #2!Sindri, the creator of Thor's enchanted hammer, has just taken it back. Mjolnir has been an integral weapon of Thor’s since his first appearance, but in Avengers: War Across Time #2, he loses the hammer to its original creator, who was accidentally brought to Midgard (aka the human realm.) Sindri is not happy to be in the human world, and there is no telling what he will do with Thor’s hammer.

Avengers: War Across Time #2 is written by Paul Levitz, drawn by Alan Davis, colored by Rachelle Rosenberg and lettered by Cory Petit. The issue opens with the original Avengers breaking into The Fantastic Four’s headquarters, looking for Doctor Doom’s time platform. While tweaking the platform, the Avengers inadvertently summon Sindri, the King of the Dwarves, to Earth. Sindri is not happy with this, and embarks on a rampage across New York.

How Kang Was Defeated In The Comics
Image
Kang the Conqueror, the master of time who is the new big villain of the MCU, has actually been around for a very long time in Marvel Comics. He is one of the first foes of the Avengers, and over the course of the decades he has challenged the Earth's Mightiest Heroes time and time again, sometimes for mere amusement, others to clear the way for his conquest of their age. Every time, the Avengers have beaten or repelled Kang, but it's not easy to defeat a man who sees the entirety of time as his playground.

Kang's mastery of time travel means that he has had several incarnations throughout history, each with their own, expanding history, the most famous being Pharaoh Rama-Tut and Immortus. However, they are considered completely different characters. The "main" Kang is Nathaniel Richards (possibly a descendant of the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards), born in...

Kang Already Confirmed How Scarlet Witch's Powers Will Destroy Humanity
Image
As Marvel Comics fans are well aware, Kang the Conqueror is a time-traveling supervillain who exists in every single time period across every conceivable reality, which means he would know how the world will end across a plethora of Marvel’s many possible and ever-changing futures–including one where it seems as though Scarlet Witch is the reason behind humanity’s downfall.

Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch is an immensely powerful magic user who is able to manipulate probability and alter reality through Chaos Magic. When she made her first appearance in X-Men #4, Scarlet Witch’s abilities were described much more simply. Initially, Scarlet Witch had the power to make something terrible happen to whoever she pointed at, even if she didn’t mean to. While this simple explanation for her powers is surprisingly accurate given the complexity of what she is actually doing, it is far from the extent of Scarlet Witch’s abilities.

X-Men's Storm To Star In New Solo Series By Marvel Icon Ann Nocenti
Image
Marvel Comics recently announced an exciting new Storm miniseries - written by the critically acclaimed and beloved writer and editor Ann Nocenti - that will explore Ororo's team as leader of the X-Men during her "punk era," shedding new light on a pivotal time in the hero's life.

Ororo Munroe is one of Marvel Comics most famous heroes of all time, and remains a fan-favorite character in the modern era of Krakoan Age X-Men comics, where she now operates as leader of the Brotherhood of Arakko, protecting the mutant planet from threats internal and external.

While Storm has been beloved for decades, one of her most acclaimed periods came in the 80s during her iconic "punk" period, where Ororo rocked an awesome mohawk hairstyle, famously battled the mutant Callisto for control of the Morlocks, and became one of the greatest leaders of the X-Men in their long history as a superhero team.

The Hulk Is Just As Dangerous Dead As He Is Alive
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers from The Avengers: War Across Time #1!One of the most popular Marvel heroes, the Hulk, has officially been proven to be just as dangerous even after death. Since his creation in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the Jekyll-and-Hyde character has become a mainstay in the Marvel Universe because of his fascinating duality. His stories have entertained fans for years no matter which form he takes because of the battle between Bruce Banner's brains and the Hulk's brawn. However, it's how dangerous he is as the strongest Avenger that has most helped him maintain a strong fanbase throughout the years.

Hulk may be able to work well with his teammates in the Avengers, but he's often one bad day away from snapping and becoming a rage machine not even the Avengers can control. This was showcased in two of the Hulk's most popular stories, Planet Hulk and World War Hulk,...

One Surprising Justice Leaguer Is Second in Power Only to Superman
Image
Out of all of DC Comics’ heroes, Superman is widely seen as the strongest hero in the world, with many of his Justice League compatriots trailing behind him. While threats like Darkseid or even DC’s own take on Galactus may surpass Clark Kent in terms of raw power, it’s largely unheard of for any hero outside of DC's main lineup to even come close to matching Kal-El’s strength. But there's on major exception.

Jla: The Nail paints a grim tableau of a world without a Superman, where a young Kal-El was never found by the kindly Kents. Even so, the Justice League still forms despite his absence, and many of these lesser-known fan-favorite heroes that popularize DC’s primary timeline still protect and serve the world they call home. But while the story depicts a world without a Superman, it also incidentally positions the one and only...

Avengers Finally Explains Why Marvel's Main Continuity Is "Earth-616"
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Avengers Assemble Alpha #1!Most Marvel fans know that its main continuity takes place on Earth-616 - one version of Earth in a seemingly infinite multiverse. However, despite the widespread use of the term, it's only now that Avengers is giving a satisfying in-world explanation for why this name was chosen.

While there is disagreement about who coined the term, what's for sure is that Alan Moore and Alan Davis introduced it in the Marvel UK comic The Daredevils, and that it then entered Marvel's American line via Excalibur, in which Captain Britain was a central character. While Moore has stated he chose the name randomly, editor Tom Brevoort (via his blog) and others have credited Captain Britain writer Dave Thorpe, and even suggested that the number was chosen as a mark of disrespect for superhero fiction, and intended as a reference to the Biblical 'Number of...

Kang's Damocles Base Is the Ultimate Version of Thanos' Throne
Image
In Marvel Comics, Kang the Conqueror operates from Damocles Base, a gigantic spaceship shaped like a sword. Marvel's other uber villain, Thanos, is famous for his 'space throne', which he uses to show his supremacy in the galaxy, but Kang is sending the same message in a much more impressive way.

Damocles Base is actually a modern addition to Kang's lore, making its debut in Avengers vol. 3 #38, by Kurt Busiek and Alan Davis. Previously, Kang used his way less impressive Time-Ship as a means of transportation, but Busiek wanted to make the character appear more threatening as he was setting up Kang as the main villain for his memorable Kang Dynasty Avengers story. Damocles Base, however, does not merely look impressive, it is actually a colossal weapon that can be used against planets, besides housing Kang's vast armies and his other futuristic technological devices.

10 Best Carlos Pacheco Comic Books Ever
Image
Legendary Spanish comic book artist Carlos Pacheco passed away yesterday, leaving behind an incredible legacy across Marvel and DC Comics. His kinetic and somewhat cartoony style proved a tonic to the hyper-extremism in the 1990s. MCU fans owe his work at Marvel, especially on Age of Ultron and Avengers Forever, a big debt as his contributions pay off massively in live-action.

Pacheco left his mark everywhere in the superhero genre. He worked on the biggest comic book icons, including the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Superman, and others. His death leaves a deep void in the comic book world, but fans now have an opportunity to return to his work or discover it for the first time.

Los Nuevos Mutantes

Pacheco got his start in comics in his native Spain, drawing for Planeta-DeAgostini Comics, a Spanish-Italian publisher publishing American reprints. His first Marvel work appeared years before anyone in America saw it,...

15 Best Kang The Conqueror Comics Ever (Including The Kang Dynasty)
Image
Marvel Studios announced at San Diego Comic-Con that the fifth Avengers movie will be subtitled The Kang Dynasty. This not only spells out Kang The Conqueror's key role as the big bad of The Multiverse Saga but alludes to a major comic book storyline. The Kang Dynasty likely serves as a blueprint for the MCU as do other great Kang comic books.

The MCU likely builds off many Kang The Conqueror comic books, and the best all embody who the villain is and why he's so effective. Thanks to the fact many Kang variants exist in the comics, some stories involve characters with different names like Immortus and Rama Tut. From his first encounters with the Avengers during the Silver Age to his most recent attempts to conquer all history, the best Kang comics provide fans with clues to where his live-action future is headed.

Marvel Reveals The Terrifying True Meaning of the Earth-616 Name
Image
Spoilers for Avengers #62 by Marvel ComicsIn a new Avengers story featuring the first Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel Comics is hinting that the Earth-616 designation for the main Marvel Universe has a much darker meaning. In Avengers #62 by Marvel Comics, Agamotto faces off against Mephisto. When the magical hero glimpses into other timelines and realities, he sees that others call Earth-616 "the true number of the beast." The revelation actually ties into the real-life naming of the primary Marvel Universe.

In the pages of Marvel Comics, the main universe featuring the most notable versions of heroes and villains, including The Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals, is designated Earth-616. The 616 designation was first mentioned in the UK comic Daredevils #7, starring Captain Britain by Alan Moore and artist Alan Davis, with editor Dave Thorpe being credited with coming up with the number. 616 was said to be chosen because Thorpe wasn't a fan of superheroes, with...

Wolverine & Sabretooth's First Rivals Were Heroes, Not Each Other
Image
The rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth is one of the most storied in all comics, worthy of mention alongside Batman and the Joker, Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, and Superman and Lex Luthor. While the two nigh-immortal mutants have been at each other's throats for more than 30 years, this wasn't always the case. Before Wolverine and Sabretooth became some of the most well-established archenemies in comic history, they were first pitted up against two different Marvel heroes.

Wolverine entered the Marvel Universe in 1974, with Sabretooth following shortly behind in 1977. More than a decade would pass until the two mutants finally crossed paths in Uncanny X-Men #212 by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis, though it and the subsequent issue would waste no time establishing that Logan and Victor had a history off the pages. While Chris Claremont always intended the two men to be connected, both had to prove themselves elsewhere in Marvel Comics first.

How Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Can Build to Secret Wars in Marvel Phase 6
Jeff Bridges, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Terrence Howard in Iron Man (2008)
No matter how popular Iron Man and Black Panther were, the MCU really came together for most casual viewers when the primary villain took center stage. After years of cameos and hints, Thanos the Mad Titan fully emerged in Avengers: Infinity War, giving the previous decade of movies renewed focus and purpose.

Although we know that Jonathan Majors’s Kang the Conqueror will be the overall bad guy in Marvel’s Phases 4 through 6, aka The Multiverse Saga, he’s very much in the nascent stages. We met a variant of Kang in the finale to Loki, the chatty He Who Remains, who warned about an evil counterpart on his way. And we know that Kang will arrive in full in next year’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. But it doesn’t look like he’ll take his place as a major MCU villain until Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton releases Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,...

Ms. Marvel Episode 3’s Temple Scene Has Big MCU Ramifications
Mohan Kapur, Laurel Marsden, Iman Vellani, Zenobia Shroff, Matt Lintz, Travina Springer, Saagar Shaikh, Yasmeen Fletcher, and Rish Shah in Ms. Marvel (2022)
This post contains spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 3, Shang-chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, and Captain Marvel.

Thus far, Ms. Marvel showrunner Bisha K. Ali has given simple explanations for the change in the title character’s powerset. Where the Kamala Khan of the comics gained the ability to alter the shape and size of her body after exposure to Terrigen Mists released by the Inhumans, the television version uses a bangle to form energy constructs.

But in episode three of Ms. Marvel, we get a glimpse of the bangle’s origin, and with it, connections to the larger MCU that go much deeper than previously assumed. The episode opens with a flashback to British-occupied India in 1942, where Najma and Kamala’s great-grandmother Aisha sort through a temple razed by colonizers. They finally uncover a severed blue arm wearing the bangle, and although Aisha notes that they need two to return home,...

Review: "Wages Of Sin" (1966); Blu-ray Special Edition From Kino Lorber And Something Weird Video

“Skip The Juvenile Delinquency And Get Right To The Sex”

By Raymond Benson

Kino Lorber and Something Weird Video continue their collaboration to present “Forbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation Picture” with Volume 10—Wages of Sin. Unlike the other exploitation titles that have appeared over the last two years, Wages is not an American picture; instead, it comes from Switzerland and was originally released as a serious drama examining the social problem of illegal abortions and the need to educate the public in birth control, as well as make a case for the legalization of a woman’s right to choose. The original German title translates to, roughly, The Doctor Says… or The Doctor Speaks Out…

However, American producer/director/actor Donn Davison, who at the time was a practitioner in the grindhouse and exploitation film circuit, secured the U.S.

B-Sides: The Ballad of Bigfoot on Blood Mountain
Tim York is the man heard crooning about Bigfoot during the opening credits of Blood Beast of Monster Mountain Aka Monster Mountain Aka The Legend of McCullough’s Mountain. The lyrics talk of how the tale of the creature changes. Not nearly as many changes as the movie itself went through.

The 1976 docudrama Blood Beast of Monster Mountain is actually the 1965 horror comedy Demon Hunter: The Legend of Blood Mountain retitled and chopped up with new footage inserted by Donn Davison, who appears in the film billed as “World Traveler, Lecturer, and Psychic Investigator”. Really more like a producer who made a go of it in the Seventies repackaging obscure, older movies with new footage for re-release.

Demon Hunter: The Legend of Blood Mountain was the starring vehicle for a little known 1960’s Georgia horror movie host who went by the name “Bestoink Dooley”. Sort of a bumbling...

Blood Beast of Monster Mountain (1976): Aka McCullough’s Mountain (1965)
I’m back! And so is Donn Davison. The world is doomed! Or saved; perhaps both. Well, if someone’s gonna do the dooming, it might as well be me, because I feel a certain salvation upon watching the incredible journey that is Blood Beast of Monster Mountain.

We get a country song that introduces us to The Legend of McCullough’s Mountain (which is also another alternate title). Apparently, as far back as the 1850s, local yokels have been seeing the mysterious creature that mortal men call Bigfoot. Donn Davison and a dumpy, clumsy copy boy named Bistoink Dooly (no joke) are on the case—but not in the same continuity. You’ve gotta understand the magic of the Donn Davison recut; we’ll explain later. For now all you need to know is that Donn does the documentary fact-checking on everything and interviews witnesses; Bistoink, ever the “loveable” clown,...

Horror Porn: The Geek (1971)
Today is a strange day. I’m free from school, but I still feel this pressing despair. My house is empty. I feel alone. And when I feel alone, I feel artistic. I resigned from the Liberal Dead, unofficially, a few days ago. But still, I feel the need to write. Especially when I’m alone. Maybe some of the despair will go away if I write. The despair of watching The Geek.

Okay, fine, it’s not that bad—just like the Holocaust wasn’t that bad. The Geek is a boring, barely-even-an-hour mess of ugly Std ‘70s fucking and bad monsters costumes. I don’t know who’s hairier—the monster, or the people getting it on—and yes, the monster is a Bigfoot. A Bigfoot who gets some. People, do a search right for my reviews for Search for the Beast and Beauties and the Beast. Ugh.
