The Running Man: Edgar Wright is Not trying to remake the Arnold Schwarzenegger version (and that’s a good thing)
Image
1987’s The Running Man is definitely a cult hit among Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movies, but it tends to get overlooked among some of the other classics he made. After all, it came out the same year as Predator, and let’s face facts—it’s no Predator. Perhaps that’s why Schwarzenegger himself once said it was the perfect movie of his to be remade. Everyone involved with the new version—especially Edgar Wright—would probably say it’s less a remake and more a fresh adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which he wrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.

Based on the trailer alone, it does seem to be a somewhat more faithful adaptation, retaining an element that was ditched from the Schwarzenegger movie: Ben Richards is more impoverished, blacklisted from his profession, and trying to raise money to treat his ill daughter. The movie also keeps the fact...

Stephen King Called This His Worst Adaptation—But Is It Really That Bad?
Image
Stephen King is well known for being very honest about how he feels when movies are made from his books. He has criticized many adaptations, including the famous version of The Shining directed by Stanley Kubrick. Another film he didn’t like at all is The Running Man, a 1987 movie directed by Paul Michael Glaser.

King was so unhappy with The Running Man movie that he asked the studio to remove his name from the advertising. Instead of showing Stephen King as the author, the film credits say it’s based on a book by Richard Bachman, which is actually a fake name King used for some of his novels.

The biggest issue King had was how different the movie was from his original story. The book is dark, serious, and has a grim tone. The movie, however, is lighter and more fun, filled with action and a happy ending.

Stephen King’s Named His Worst Film Adaptation—Is It Worth the Hate?
Image
Stephen King has never been shy about sharing his opinions on movies made from his books. He has openly criticized several adaptations, including the famous Stanley Kubrick version of The Shining.

Another film he strongly disliked is The Running Man, directed by Paul Michael Glaser and released in 1987. King was so unhappy with the movie that he asked for his name to be removed from the advertising. Instead of crediting Stephen King directly, the film’s opening credits say it’s based on a novel by Richard Bachman, which is actually King’s pen name.

The main problem King had with The Running Man movie was how different it was from his book. The original story is dark, serious, and grim. The film, on the other hand, is much lighter, with a fun, action-packed vibe and a happy ending. Despite these big changes, some people think both the book and...

‘The Running Man’: Everything to know about Edgar Wright’s new take on Stephen King’s dystopian classic as trailer drops
Image
Even when he's not in a Navy cockpit, Glen Powell has a need for speed. The first trailer for The Running Man raced onto the internet today, featuring the Top Gun: Maverick star taking on a role previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in a deliciously '80s adaptation of Stephen King's dystopian novel.

Hailing from director Edgar Wright, this new Running Man is running a very different race. Hewing more closely to the novel — which King published under his since-abandoned nom de plume of Richard Bachman — the updated film has an edgy sense of humor and fleet-footed action sequences that unfold in multiple locations across the U.S.

Appearing at CinemaCon earlier this year, Wright described his take as a "very intense, dangerous road movie." And he praised his leading man for never taking a breather during the movie's rapid-fire production. "He literally and figuratively threw himself into it,...

Glen Powell Is on the Run in First Trailer for Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’
Image
When Stephen King wrote The Running Man back in 1982 under his nom-de-plume Richard Bachman, the year 2025 felt so impossibly distant that it was possible to imagine a dystopia where expert assassins hunted innocent men for sport on the most popular television show in America. And while reality TV hasn’t sunk to that low quite yet, Hollywood couldn’t resist bringing King’s unique fusion of The Fugitive, The Truman Show, and The Hunger Games back to the big screen this year.

The newest adaptation of The Running Man, starring Glen Powell,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger Reveals What 'The Running Man' Remake Can Do Better Than His Stephen King Action Classic
Image
The same year he was featured in his iconic role in Predator, Arnold Schwarzeneggerstarred in a dystopian survival thriller loosely based on Stephen King's novel, The Running Man. Although the film starred the icon in his action prime, it remains one of his lesser-celebrated films. The Total Recall and Twins actor spoke to Cbr for Cbr Presents: Draw! to promote the release of Season 2 of his Netflix series Fubar. Image
In November, Edgar Wright's new take on The Running Man will be premiering in theaters, presenting a new reimagining of the Stephen King story. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who famously starred in the first feature film released in 1987, feels optimistic that Wright's version will be able to improve upon what the original movie was lacking.

Schwarzenegger recently spoke with Grae Drake for Cbr Presents: Draw! to promote the second season of Fubar on Netflix, which premieres on June 12. The subject of The Running Man came up during the conversation, and Schwarzenegger shared his thoughts on the new movie coming out this year. While he says he doesn't know much in terms of Wright's creative direction, he believes the remake has an edge over the original thanks to modern visual effects. The actor noted that this was where the classic Running Man movie could have been "better."

Arnold Schwarzenegger gave his blessing to The Running Man remake
Image
Remaking a fan favorite is always a risky move. And while the power of Edgar Wright, Glen Powell and Josh Brolin is enough to restore confidence in the upcoming remake of The Running Man, it might take even more to get some on board. Enter the original Ben Richards, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who lent his support for the rerun after being tracked down by the director and star.

Glen Powell – who will be taking over the role of Richards, who has been forced to participate in the country’s most dangerous game show – recently revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger gave the go-ahead for The Running Man remake. Powell said that he used his friendship with Arnold’s son Patrick – and not his having already worked with him on The Expendables 3 – to set up a FaceTime meeting. “Arnold gave us his full blessing and we get to give Arnold a very specific...

‘The Running Man’ Races Off With First Footage as Glen Powell Says “I Have Never Worked Harder”
Image
Paramount Pictures is readying to put Edgar Wright’s The Running Man in the starting block with seven months to go before a Nov. 7 debut in theaters. The cast looked prepped and game to set a strong theatrical pace by appearing on Caesars Palace’s Colosseum stage during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday.

“I have never worked harder on a movie in my life,” said star Glen Powell, known as one of the busier actor-producers in Hollywood of the film, which just wrapped a week ago.

Wright and Powell were joined by Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo for a lively segment during which they introduced never-before-seen footage from the film, an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel. Published under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Running Man is set in an America in 2025 under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses.

The Running Man Director Edgar Wright On "Intense, Dangerous" Adaptation; First Official BTS Still Released
Image
We're still waiting on our first official look at Edgar Wright's new take on The Running Man (we have seen some set photos of star Glen Powell as Ben Richards), but for now, Empire Magazine (via SFFGazette.com) has released a behind-the-scenes shot from the movie.

The image isn't particularly revealing, and only shows Wright calling the action. The filmmaker also spoke to the movie mag about what fans can expect from this re-adaptation of King's story.

“One of the things about the book that I loved was the fact that Ben Richards is out in the world on his own, so it’s like the deadliest game of hide and seek,” Wright says. “It does feel like making a road movie in a lot of ways: a very intense, dangerous road movie. Ben is moving through different environments and meeting different people as he tries to survive 30 days out in the wild.

In a new interview with Empire, director Edgar Wright teased his new adaptation of The Running Man. 60-Year-Old 'Hogan's Heroes' is Streaming for Free on Freevee
Image
The subject of war never seems like a topic that lends itself to much hilarity, but one TV show that proved it was possible is streaming for free on Freevee, and has found itself climbing into the streamer’s Top 10. That series is Hogan's Heroes, the 1960s comedy series that managed to retain a 100% audience score across its six seasons and is hailed as probably the funniest show to have ever been set in a Nazi P.O.W prison camp.

Like many older shows and movies, Hogan’s Heroes has found itself being put in front of a whole new audience with its inclusion on Freevee. While the series is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the show has actually been available on the platform for over 200 days, making its charge up the chart somewhat baffling and indicative of the way there is usually no rhyme or reason behind what becomes popular on streaming.

'The Running Man' Makes a Perfect Thematic Sequel to the 'Gladiator' Movies
Image
Gladiator II, the follow-up to Ridley Scott's Academy Award-winning 2000 film, has audiences once again returning to the Colosseum of Ancient Rome to witness the glory and spectacle of gladiatorial combat. The swing of the sword mesmerizes the crowds as Caesar sits in judgment; the thrilling entertainment that took place thousands of years ago is once again depicted. There's something that we, as modern audiences, can certainly relate to.

The need for escapism and spectacle and our penchant for sensational entertainment has remained unchanged in the centuries that have passed since the days of Caesar. One could even make the comparison that sitting in front of our television screens and phones bears a striking similarity to the attendants of the games in the Colosseum and Circus Maximus.

The concept of there being little difference between the gladiatorial contests of Ancient Rome and television shows providing sensational content to an eager...

In 1953, Billy Wilder scored a critical and commercial success with his film adaptation of Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski's stage play "Stalag 17" (one of his 14 best films according to /Film). Set in a World War II Pow camp behind Nazi enemy lines, the movie is a rambunctious account of how imprisoned soldiers misbehave and attempt to make their captors' lives miserable. They're also ever on the verge of hatching a new escape plan, though they wind up having a rat in their ranks who complicates their efforts.

Given that World War II was a desperately bloody affair on both the European and Pacific fronts as the Allies fought to save civilization from the clutches of genocidal vermin, you might not think it appropriate for artists to find humor anywhere within the conflict. But the ability to laugh when...

Everything We Know About The Running Man Remake
Image
Back in the 80s, Stephen King adaptations ruled the theaters. You could barely go a few months without hearing about a new film that was coming out. One that many would be surprised to find out was a King adaptation would be the testosterone-infused murder game show The Running Man. Released under King’s pseudonym, Richard Bachman, the book was hardly a hit. Once King was outed as the author, sales went through the roof. Hollywood came calling. With King being popular once again, another adaptation of the book is in the making.

What’s It About?

In the 80s adaptation, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a wrongfully convicted police officer. He gets a chance at freedom if he can survive the game show The Running Man. Of course, the game is rigged so that no one ever wins, but this time is different. They don’t know who they are messing with.

The Running Man | Josh Brolin to play the villain in Edgar Wright’s new adaptation
Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in The Goonies (1985)
The Goonies star James Brolin will star opposite Glen Powell in Edgar Wright’s take on Stephen King’s The Running Man.

As Edgar Wright’s take on The Running Man continues to edge closer to production, another key piece of casting has been announced. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Brolin will play the film’s lead antagonist, most likely the lead hunter pursuing Powell’s Ben Richards, the titular ‘running man.’

Set in a dystopian future where America has become largely ghettoised, reality TV is the ‘opiate of the masses’, pumping out violent shows that distract viewers from the misery that surrounds them. The most popular show of all, The Running Man, charges a contestant with running and hiding for a month as hunters attempt to track them down and murder them.

If it sounds dark, that’s because it is. King’s original book is so bleak...

Image
Glen Powell has found his adversary in Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of The Running Man, based on Stephen King's 1982 novel. Josh Brolin is in final talks to play the villain in the film, which makes sense Brolin is no stranger to playing bad guys; in fact, he was once the biggest threat to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Per Deadline, Josh Brolin is joining The Running Man update from Paramount Pictures. The exact details of his role are still under wraps, but given that he's described as the "antagonist behind the violent reality show," Brolin is likely playing Dan Killian a role previously played by game-show host Richard Dawson in the 1987 adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the dystopian thriller novel, which King wrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Killian is the executive producer of a reality show in which contestants are forced to run for their lives from trained...
