Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman in The Fountain (2006)
Y: The Last Man Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Peppers
Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman in The Fountain (2006)
It was only a matter of time before Washington fell.

On Y: The Last Man Season 1 Episode 9, chaos reigns supreme, hinting at a darker, wilder future ahead.

There's so much to process from this episode, so let's get to it!

Y: The Last Man has never been one to shy away from topical issues -- it chooses to tackle them head-on, holding up society to scrutiny and asking why we aren't doing better.

The infiltration of the Pentagon is more than a little reminiscent of the January 6 attacks on the Capitol. We've gotten to know these women throughout the season, and seeing them moving through dark halls where violent protestors destroy a government building was deeply unsettling.

The show is careful not to paint these revolutionaries as villains, but their actions are motivated by desperation. Tensions are high, but Regina's death still came as a horrific shock.

This is a...

Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, and Christoph Waltz in Georgetown (2019)
Vanessa Redgrave in Christoph Waltz's D.C. Drama 'Georgetown' Trailer
Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, and Christoph Waltz in Georgetown (2019)
"Try to get to know him before you condemn him!" Paramount Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie political drama titled Georgetown, marking the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning Austrian actor Christoph Waltz. This already premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, but has been waiting for a release ever since. It never played at any other festivals which is a bad sign, on top of the release delay. Waltz also stars in the film as Ulrich Mott, an ambitious social climber, who marries a wealthy widow in Washington D.C. in order to mix with powerful political players... and get his hands on her money. The film's impressive cast features Vanessa Redgrave, Annette Bening, Corey Hawkins, Laura de Carteret, Dan Lett, and Amin Bhatia. This seems like such a sleazy story, but I guess that's the point, examining the lengths some people go to...

Paramount has released the trailer for Georgetown, directed by and starring Christoph Waltz alongside Annette Bening and Vanessa Redgrave. The film, in theaters May 14 and on digital May 18, was inspired by the bizarre true story of Albrecht Muth.

The film’s official synopsis notes, “Waltz stars as Ulrich Mott, an eccentric and smooth-talking social climber who seems to have everyone in Washington, D.C. wrapped around his finger. But when his wealthy, well-connected and much older wife (Redgrave) turns up dead in their home, her daughter Amanda (Bening) suspects Ulrich...

Kat Graham in Trailer for Charming Netflix Film 'The Holiday Calendar'
"Your grandmother was convinced it had magical powers. She should've brought her to me." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a charming, cute new holiday romance film titled The Holiday Calendar, formerly known as Christmas Calendar until Netflix realized it would play better without specifically saying "Christmas". The film stars Kat Graham as Abby Sutton, a talented but struggling photographer who inherits an antique advent calendar that may be predicting the future -- and pointing her toward love. Of course. The film also stars Quincy Brown, Ron Cephas Jones, Genelle Williams, Laura de Carteret, Ali Hassan, Romaine Waite, plus Ethan Peck. This looks extra cheesy and almost too sweet and not at all like something any cinephiles will watch. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Bradley Walsh's The Holiday Calendar, direct from YouTube: A struggling but talented photographer (Kat Graham) stuck in a dead-end job inherits an...

‘Standoff’ Review
Stars: Thomas Jane, Laurence Fishburne, Ella Ballentine, Jim Watson, John Tench, Laura de Carteret, Ted Atherton, Joanna Douglas | Written and Directed by Adam Alleca

Carter (Jane), a troubled veteran who gets a chance at redemption by protecting a 12 year-old girl from an assassin after she witnesses a murder. Holding a shotgun with a single shell, he engages in physical and psychological warfare in a desperate fight for the girl’s life.

Unsurprisingly, the main premise for the film Standoff is that the film involves a stand-off between the two main characters as they both try to get the upper hand. If done incorrectly, this film has the ability to be incredibly boring. Let’s be honest, with neither party having the upper hand, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for exciting things to happen. Thankfully, I was in luck and it turned out to be very entertaining. This was...

Backpackers, Seed: TV Shows Cancelled by The CW
It's game over for The CW's new comedies Seed and Backpackers. The smallest network has cancelled and pulled the low-rated comedies after just two airings.

On Seed, a single bartender and sperm donor (Adam Korson) meets offspring that he never knew he had and becomes involved in their lives. The rest of the cast includes Carrie-Lynn Neales, Amanda Brugel, Stephanie Anne Mills, Laura De Carteret, Matt Baram, Vanessa Matsui, Abby Ross, and William Ainscough.

Backpackers follows Brandon (Dillon Casey) and Ryan (Noah Reid) as they travel through Europe looking for Ryan's girlfriend girlfriend Beth (Meghan Heffern). Giacomo Gianniotti plays Andrew, Brandon's slacker brother.

Both shows had dismal launches last week, attracting fewer than 600,000 viewers each. The numbers got even worse this week. Based on the fast affiliate ratings, Backpackers dropped 40% and Seed fell 20%.

Seed: Season One Ratings
A comedy series, Seed is produced in Canada. It has been such a success there that the show has already been renewed for a second season. Will Seed's ratings be high enough for The CW to want to air all of the episodes or, will they cancel it? Stay tuned.

The rest of the cast includes Carrie-Lynn Neales, Amanda Brugel, Stephanie Anne Mills, Laura De Carteret, Matt Baram, Vanessa Matsui, Abby Ross, and William Ainscough.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day,...

Grimmfest 2013 Review: ‘The Conspiracy’
Stars: Aaron Poole, James Gilbert, Ian Anderson, Angela Besharah, Bruce Clayton, Laura de Carteret, Peter Apostolopoulos | Written and Directed by Christopher MacBride

“For you see, the world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined…” – Benjamin Disraeli, British Prime Minister 1874 – 1880

The Conspiracy is directed by Christopher MacBride, who makes his feature film debut behind the camera to tell this tale. The story follows two guys named Aaron (Aaron Poole) and Jim (James Gilbert) who are making a documentary about people who believe in conspiracy theories. It begins as a basic documentary as we follow the shoulder’s of these two filmmakers as they speak with people who believe in these ideas. It is striking, to begin with, by how realistic these opening scenes are where the camera rests on talking heads who are speaking about the topic at hand.

This Canadian made film feels authentic and I love...

Pagan Rites Performed in this Clip for Jon Knautz's Demonic Film The Shrine
The Shrine - Still - CrucifixionYou really have to respect a village for sticking with Paganism 1400 years after variations of this religion have basically gone out of fashion. Paganism is a blanket term used to cover many Eastern European before the emergence of Christianity. Paganism is one of the themes within director Jon Knautz's (Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer) Canadian horror film The Shrine, which will have a World Premiere at Montreal's Fantasia July 25th. The film will have one showing at the film festival and The Shrine, unsurprisingly, shows a "pagan-looking shrine," (Fantasia) where the Polish locals hold Pagan rites for mysterious demons. The trailer for the film is fantastic and the clip shows more of the religious rites performed by these ancient worshipers, below.

The synopsis for The Shrine here:

"The story has a small group of American journalists embarks to a remote Polish village in search of...

Exclusive Video: Amanda Seyfried Is Chloe
In a very short amount of time Amanda Seyfried has quickly become one of the busiest and most sought after young actresses in all of Hollywood. The actress first gained notice for her role in the Tina Fey written comedy Mean Girls and later went on to star on the critically acclaimed HBO series Big Love but it was her co-starring roles in the feature films Mamma Mia! opposite Oscar winner Meryl Streep and Jennifer's Body with Megan Fox that made the actress a household name. She even recently headlined her own hit film when Dear John opened number one at the box office unseating the long-reigning champ Avatar. The actress has also signed on to star in a re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood tale called The Girl With The Red Riding Hood directed by Catherine Hardwicke, so it's safe to say that Seyfried should be around for a while.

Preliminary 2011 Oscar Contenders: Part One
As of right now, I have a list of 72 individual films that could potentially go on to become 2011 Oscar nominees. If you take into consideration the additional films I currently have listed as animated and documentary contenders the list grows to 85 films. As a result I am going to break up this preliminary list of Oscar contenders into four articles and on the fifth day, this coming Friday, I will publish the list in its entirety. I felt it would be easier to digest everything this way as opposed to offering one massive list you probably wouldn't be able to look over all at once.

As for the list itself, it should be looked at as a guide to potential nominees, not a guarantee, not a lock, but simply films that could potentially go on to be remembered at the year-end Oscar race. A few of these films may not...
