Back in 1991, Eerie, Indiana premiered on NBC. It was created by Karl Schaefer and Jose Rivera, who had two tracks of mind in creating the series. One, to create a show for children that didn’t pander to children and secondly, to have a fun and scary show. And you know what?
They succeeded.
Eerie, Indiana takes place in the titular town. We first meet Marshall Teller on his paper route. He’s relocated from the dank, rotting Big Apple. He misses it. His father, Edgar is an inventor for a company in Eerie called “Things, Incorporated,” and his mother, Marilyn is a party planner despite having lax organizational skills. His sister, Syndi is a regular, normal teenage girl. Marshall is the odd one out in his family it seems. But he notices that something is amiss in this ‘burb. He sees an older, fatter Elvis on his route. He...

Matt Dearborn is co-creator and showrunner (with Tom Burkhard) of the comedy series Zeke & Luther, targeting young males ages 6-14. While Disney Xd’s audience is minuscule compared to the networks’, insiders are saying that this show following the adventures of two goofy teenage guys obsessed with becoming world-class skateboarders is an Emmy contender for Outstanding Children’s Program. Dearborn, who also created the Emmy-nominated hit Even Stevens, talks to Deadline TV contributor Diane Haithman about his backdoor entry into TV writing, working for Disney, and how to think like a kid: Deadline: What sets Zeke & Luther apart from other children’s TV at Emmy time? Matt Dearborn: Because we are the only show in the kids’ space that is executing such a high level of physical comedy. Two people talking to each other might play in primetime, but unless somebody’s going to pick up a banana and...

When Miley Cyrus wanted to shift away from the tween roles that have defined her career, Tish Cyrus, her mother and co-manager, started at the top. Rather than look for a pre-existing script, she contacted bestselling author Nicholas Sparks ("The Notebook") and asked him to write something specifically for her daughter. "Sparks is an amazing, faith-based writer and a Christian and he writes about relationships with a family and there is nothing about sex or things I felt were wrong for her," she explains. Cyrus, 16, met with the writer to flesh out her character; she disclosed elements from her own life—like her love for animals—that Sparks incorporated in his work, which started as a screenplay and only later became "The Last Song," a best-selling novel. The movie version, with Cyrus, opens in April."This film is like taking that first baby step away from 'Hannah Montana,' " Tish Cyrus notes.

Duchovny gets live action at Cartoon Net
David Duchovny is making the leap from the adult themes of sex addiction in his new Showtime comedy series Californication to a kids-oriented half-hour for Cartoon Network set in junior high.
As part of its strategy to expand into live-action programming, Cartoon has given a pilot-presentation order to a live-action project from Duchovny, Even Stevens creator Matt Dearborn and Robert Mora.
The untitled project, written by Dearborn, centers on a junior high school student from a long line of newsmen who turns his school AV Club into a hard-hitting citywide broadcast. Duchovny, Dearborn and Mora are executive producing.
Cartoon entered the live-action arena less than a year ago with the December debut of live-action/animated movie Re-Animated. A live-action series spinoff -- Out of Jimmy's Head -- premiered Friday night. Cartoon also recently aired a live-action reality special, Props, that gave kids a chance to meet their celebrity heroes.
Duchovny also executive produces Californication, which recently got picked up for a second season. He is repped by ICM, manager Melanie Greene and attorney Peter Nelson.
