2 Years Later, a Forgotten $496 Million Pixar Movie Is Getting a Second Chance on Streaming
Image
Disney+ subscribers are rediscovering Elemental. Two years after its theatrical run, the animated movie is back on the streaming charts, along with another fan-favorite Pixar flick.

Per FlixPatrol, as of July 7, Elemental is No. 10 on Disney+'s Top Movies Worldwide list, with Ratatouille a few spots higher at No. 6. The Pixar movie's return to streaming dominance comes almost two years after it became the most-watched movie debut on Disney+ of 2023 with 26.4 million views over its first five days on the service. At the time, The Walt Disney Company also reported that Elemental was among Disney+'s Top 10 movie premieres of all time and was the most-viewed animated movie premiere since Turning Red, another Pixar title, dropped onto the streamer in March 2022.

Directed by Peter Sohn, Elemental is set in Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth-, and Air-residents live together, following "the quick-witted and fiery Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), whose...

‘Inside Out 2’: Read The Screenplay For The Highest-Grossing Animated Film Of All Time
Image
Deadline’s annual Read the Screenplay series, which celebrates the craft of scriptwriting by offering exclusive access to the buzziest movie scripts of awards season, kicks off its latest edition with Inside Out 2. Pixar and Disney’s sequel is the Envy of the box office in 2024, grossing $1.698 billion globally to become the year’s highest-grossing movie to date.

Meg LeFauve, one of the writers on 2015’s Inside Out, which went on to nab an Original Screenplay Oscar nomination and won for Best Animated Feature, returned to pen the sequel with Dave Holstein, based on an original story by LeFauve and Kelsey Mann. Mann directed, taking the reins from the original’s co-directors and her fellow co-writers Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen.

The sequel’s script picked up a now 13-year-old Riley (the voice of Kensington Tallman), who is experiencing a parade of new emotions that play out in her brain’s headquarters.

Inside Out Live-Action Concept Trailer Casts Sadie Sink & Jenna Ortega
Image
Inside Out gets a new fan-made, live-action concept trailer, imagining Sadie Sink and Jenna Ortega in lead roles. Released in 2015, Inside Out hails from directors Pete Doctor and Ronnie Del Carmen, with a story that follows Riley and her various emotions most notably Amy Poehler's Joy as she moves to a city and new school. After the first film was a major hit with audiences and critics alike, Riley's story continued in Disney's Inside Out 2, which hit theaters earlier this summer and introduced a handful of new animated characters.

Multiverse of Movies now imagines what Inside Out would look like if it made the jump to live-action with an AI-generated concept trailer. The trailer features a mix of new and familiar cast members, with some members of the franchise's voice cast becoming live-action versions of their animated characters. Bill Hader, for example, who voices Fear, is imagined as...

10 Most Expensive Animated Movies Ever Made
Image
The most expensive animated movies of all time are all from the 2010s or later, suggesting that inflation is at least part of rising costs. However, some of the iconic animated movies that changed animation forever required a larger budget to account for the new technologies the movie's team pioneered. Still, it would appear that most animators have a ceiling when it comes to their budget, even when their movies are regularly successful.

Pixar accounts for most of the most expensive animated movies, but never spends more than $200 million. The best Pixar movies are proof enough that the studio knows what it is doing, and has reason enough to be confident in spending the extra money or sticking to a budget. However, when working with the material of two of the best Disney movies of all time, executives decided to dish out even more money to make sure the movie was made correctly.

Inside Out 3 Gets Cautious Update From Pixar Boss Following $1.63B Sequel Success
Image
Inside Out 3 is not confirmed yet, but Pixar is exploring ideas for the next installment due to the success of the franchise. Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter is considering the direction of the potential threequel, focusing on unexplored concepts. Despite no official production start, Pixar hopes to delve deeper into the vast world of emotions.

While Inside Out 3 is not officially confirmed, Pixar is workshopping some ideas for the threequel. Inside Out 2 is still in theaters and proved to be a dominating force at the box office this summer. It has earned over $1.6 billion already and is poised to continue earning for Disney once it comes to Disney+. Pixar is already working on the four-episode Dream Productions spin-off, but Inside Out 3's confirmation continues to be a subject of anticipation.

While not wholly admitting that the threequel will be entering production, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, has been considering the next steps.

Inside Out 2's Record-Breaking Box Office Is Great, But Pixar Can't Forget About 2023's $496 Million Hit
Image
Elemental's surprising success paved the way for Inside Out 2's record-breaking box office run despite a lackluster opening weekend. Pixar learned from Elemental's comeback to make Inside Out 2 a massive hit by focusing on a clearer core concept and strong trailers. While sequels are inevitable, Pixar still needs to prioritize original movies like Elemental to maintain its unique storytelling appeal.

Pixar must be thrilled to see Inside Out 2 dominate the box office and continuously break records, but the studio must not forget about its $496 million success from the previous year. After the Covid-19 pandemic and Disney's habits made audiences more used to seeing Pixar's animated movies at home, questions about their future at the box office became much larger. Disappointing results for Onward and Lightyear, coupled with Turning Red, Soul, and Luca going straight to Disney+, had alarm bells sounding when Elemental's opening weekend disappointed...

Best Picture Oscar nomination for ‘Inside Out 2’?
Image
“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.

The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.

But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

Movie Review: Inside Out 2
Image
Pixar has a knack for making stories about the turbulence of adolescence universally relatable. Their latest offering, the splendid sequel to 2015’s Inside Out, appropriately titled Inside Out 2 doesn’t necessarily continue the narrative of the first film, more so than it continues the development of the film’s protagonist.

Following the events of the first film – wherein young Riley found herself and her family uprooted from their Midwest home and relocated to San Francisco – Inside Out 2 picks up with Riley rapidly approaching the next big challenge of her life – puberty.

As the film begins, Riley and her friends are preparing to head to a hockey camp in preparation for attending a new high school as well as possibly making the school’s hockey team. Initially, Riley and her friends, as well as the core emotions within her head – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black...

‘Inside Out’ Movie Recap (In-Detail): Things To Know Before Watching The Sequel
Image
The scope of imagination showcased in Pixar’s animated movie oeuvre is boundless, vivid, and experimentative. Even with younger minds as their target audience, the movies created by Pixar often tend to be philosophically and emotionally vibrant, defying the limitations of the genre in the most unique ways. After years of enchanting viewers with the emotional complexities of human, non-human, and even inanimate characters, Pixar went even further by crafting a story about emotional expression and personifications of emotions themselves, as shown beautifully in their much-loved animated release of 2015, Inside Out.

Director Pete Docter conceptualized the movie as he observed the coming-of-age journey of his own daughter, imbuing a deeply personal note to his creation in the process. To maintain a certain level of authenticity in portraying the inner trappings of the psyche, he and co-director Ronnie del Carmen even sought help from medical professionals—no wonder the audience found...

Disney is closing out CinemaCon 2024 with extended looks at upcoming films, including Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel, Inside Out 2. Coincidentally, I visited Pixar Studios at the end of March for an in-depth look at the emotionally driven sequel, which finds audiences getting reacquainted with Riley, the same young woman who let us walk around inside her head in the Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen original in 2015.

Make Room For New Emotions With The Inside Out 2 Trailer From Disney And Pixar
Image
In retrospect, it only becomes harder and harder to believe that any of us made it out of our awkward teenage years (relatively) unscathed with our dignity (relatively) intact. Every new environment during this tumultuous time comes with a whole assortment of anxiety-inducing social interactions, new fears and pressures we didn't even know existed before, and the ever-present threat of embarrassing ourselves in ways that will randomly keep us up at night decades down the line. Look at what I put myself through just for the sake of bringing the newest movie news to your devices, people!

For better or worse, viewers better start preparing themselves for the emotional rollercoaster that will undoubtedly be "Inside Out 2," the sequel to the hit 2015 Pixar movie. Almost a decade ago,...

Elemental 2 Chances Get Hopeful Response From Pixar Star After $496M Box Office Comeback
Image
Leah Lewis, the star of Pixar's Elemental, hopes a sequel is made. Pixar's Elemental had a surprising box office comeback, earning $496 million globally despite its weak start. Though Lewis is hopeful that Elemental 2 will happen, she has not heard anything yet.

Elemental 2's chances get a hopeful response from Leah Lewis after the Pixar movie's $496 million box office comeback. The animated film explores the budding relationship between Ember Lumen (Lewis) and Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie), two residents of Element City who attempt to save the former's convenience store, despite pre-existing beliefs about fire and water. Along with Lewis and Athie, the voice cast of Elemental includes Ronnie Del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. After its disappointing opening weekend in 2023, Elemental maintained a strong hold at the box office, but a sequel hasn't been announced.

In a recent interview with The Direct, Lewis revealed her...

Riley's Hockey Game Is Interrupted By A New Emotion In Pixar's Latest Inside Out 2 Teaser
Image
Is anyone else hearing things or are those just the voices in my head? For once, this isn't a sign of serious psychological problems, but simply another tease for one of Pixar Studios' most highly-anticipated sequels yet. I can still remember that rainy Saturday during the summer of 2015 while I was babysitting my little cousins and figured I'd surprise them with an impromptu trip to the theaters to see "Inside Out." Unfortunately, it turned out that everybody had the same idea, and all the showings were already sold out ... so we ended up settling for "Minions" instead. But don't worry, this story has a happy ending since we eventually got around to seeing the brilliant emotional rollercoaster and all agreed that it was better than "Minions" inadvertently confirming some discomfiting connections to Adolf Hitler.

In any case, we're finally getting a follow-up to one of Pixar's best original movies...

‘Elemental’: Read The Screenplay For The Pixar Movie That Finds A Way To Mix Fire And Water
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.

Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.

The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.

The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

‘All of Us Strangers’: This fantasy will make Oscars a reality for Andrew Haigh
Image
Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.

However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

Inside Out 2 teaser trailer: Anxiety brings emotional baggage to Pixar’s highly-anticipated sequel
Image
Please keep your hands and feet inside the cart at all times as we prepare to ride another roller coaster of emotions with Pixar‘s Inside Out 2! Debuting the day after the actors’ guild reached a tentative agreement to end the ongoing actors’ strike, an Inside Out 2 teaser trailer reminds audiences how much the 2015 animated original added to their therapy bills.

Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Mindy Kaling (Disgust), Bill Hader (Fear), and Lewis Black (Anger) played the emotions in 2015’s Inside Out. However, Hader and Kaling won’t be returning for the sequel, with Tony Hale and Liza Lapira replacing them, respectively. The Inside Out 2 teaser introduces a new emotion to the mix, Anxiety, voiced by Stranger Things and Asteroid City star Maya Hawke. The first film revolves around 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the five emotions creating whirlwinds inside her developing brain.

‘Inside Out 2’ trailer reveals Maya Hawke as Anxiety, plus voice cast replacements for Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader [Watch]
Image
Pixar is ready to play some mind games again.

On Thursday, Disney released the first teaser for the forthcoming animated sequel, which introduces a new emotion to the mix of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust: Anxiety, voiced by “Stranger Things” star Maya Hawke.

For those who don’t recall the 2015 hit – an Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature and, for many Pixar fans, one of the best films the studio has ever done – “Inside Out” is about the emotions inside the head of a young girl named Riley, who moves from Minnesota to San Francisco after her parents relocate. The high-concept feature, which also received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, mainly focused on how the emotions of Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) and Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith) learned to coexist together as a young child came of age. Other emotions were voiced by Lewis Black (Anger...

Joy Meets Anxiety In The Inside Out 2 Teaser Trailer
Image
How fitting is it that on the morning after the official end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, one of the first new trailers we get is from a movie about unleashing all sorts of heightened emotions? This moment of perfectly-timed collective catharsis comes courtesy of Pixar, as the animation studio has released our initial look at one of their most highly-anticipated sequels ever: "Inside Out 2." The 2015 original left nary a dry eye in the room after introducing the world to young Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the torrent of preadolescent feelings swirling around her head. And just when we thought we could start to recover from what happened to the lovable Bing Bong (Richard Kind), they've gone ahead with a sequel that's sure to be another emotional roller coaster.

The twist this time around, of course, will be the introduction of a whole new set of emotions to coincide with Riley...

Pixar's Elemental Beats The Little Mermaid for Largest Disney+ Movie Debut of 2023
Image
Elemental has continued to exceed expectations by becoming the most-watched movie debut on Disney+ this year.

According to The Walt Disney Company, the Disney/Pixar movie was viewed 26.4 million times in its first five days on the streaming platform. This makes Elemental the most-watched movie premiere of 2023 on Disney+, beating the previous record holder -- the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid -- by over 10 million views. Elemental is also among Disney+'s Top 10 movie premieres of all time and is the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar's Turning Red was released in March 2022. It is important to note that Disney defines a view as "total stream time divided by runtime."

‘Elemental’ Notches Top Disney+ Movie Debut of 2023, Says Streamer
Image
The slow-burn life of Elemental continues. The film landed the top streaming debut for a movie on Disney+ so far this year, the streaming service announced Monday. That follows Elemental‘s box office journey, which began inauspiciously with a record-worst opening for a Pixar movie, only for the film to have strong legs and ultimately earn $484 million globally.

According to Disney, Elemental had 26.4 million views — or, to put it another way, viewing time equivalent to that many complete showings of the movie — worldwide in its first five days of streaming. Like its competitor Netflix, Disney+ divides total viewing time by a title’s run time. For comparison’s sake, Disney touted last week that the live-action The Little Mermaid landed on the service with 16 million views in its first five days. The recent episode-one debut of the Star Wars series Ahsoka brought in 14 million over five days. The company did...

‘Elemental’ Draws 26.4 Million Views in First Five Days on Disney+
Image
The Disney and Pixar film “Elemental” had a strong start on Disney+, with the film pulling in 26.4 million views in its first five days of streaming availability.

Per Disney, that makes “Elemental” the most-watched movie premiere of the year on the service and among the top 10 movie premieres they have ever had. For context, Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime, just like Netflix recently started doing. The film became available on Disney+ on Sept. 13. Disney also says “Elemental” has become the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” was released in March 2022, as well as the most-viewed Disney+ movie premiere of all time in Latin America, just ahead of “Turning Red.”

By comparison, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debuted with 1.625 billion minutes viewed in its first five days of availability on Disney+, which translates to approximately 10.8 million views.

‘Elemental’ Scores Biggest Disney+ Movie Premiere Since ‘Turning Red’
Image
Disney and Pixar announced on Monday that their animated feature Elemental, starring Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie, has scored the biggest movie premiere of the year to date on Disney+, earning 26.4 million views in its first five days on the service.

The result, calculated by dividing total stream time by runtime, positions the film as one of the Top 10 in the history of the streamer, as far as premieres. The flick directed by Peter Sohn is the most viewed-animated feature to come out of Disney/Pixar since Turning Red was released last March and has also notably bested that Oscar-nominated Domee Shi pic with the biggest Latin American Disney+ movie premiere of all time.

How Old Ember & Wade Are In Elemental
Image
Ember and Wade are in their early to mid-20s in Elemental, as they are old enough to have full-time jobs but are still figuring out their identities. Mamoudou Athie, the voice actor for Wade, is 35, and Leah Lewis, the voice actor for Ember, is 26, but they can manipulate their voices to match the characters' tones and pitches. If Elemental gets a sequel, Ember and Wade's next adventures could involve settling down, Ember's glass-making becoming successful, or starting a family, all based on their self-acceptance and love as young adults.

Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) are the two element-crossed lovers at the heart of Elemental, the Pixar film that has received a resurgence in popularity on streaming, and inspired fans to wonder how old the two elements really are. In the world of Elemental, Air, Water, Fire, and Earth may all live in Element City, but the elements shoudn't mix,...

Elemental Sets Disney+ Premiere Date After Box Office Comeback
Image
Pixar's animated comedy-drama, Elemental, sets its Disney+ premiere date after elevating at the box office following a much-publicized slow start.

Per Screen Rant, Elemental will be released via Disney+ on Sept. 13, just under two months after the film's theatrical release in the United States. Additionally, a making-of documentary titled Good Chemistry: The Making of Elemental will premiere simultaneously to give audiences a behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was made.

Elemental's Disney+ debut comes amid a rollercoaster cinematic run for the highly-anticipated Pixar title, which originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. After being projected to make up to $40 million domestically during its opening weekend, which saw the film released alongside The Flash and The Blackening, Elemental ended up making $29.5 million. The underwhelming premiere weekend tally was the second-lowest of all time for a Pixar film behind 1995's Toy Story,...

Are Pixar Movies 'Too Smart' for Kids? President Responds
Image
When discussing the Cinderella-esque box-office story of Elemental, which has managed to climb back up in ticket purchases, Pixar’s president was asked if he thought its movies were too sophisticated for kids.

Speaking to Variety, Jim Morris, who has been the president of Pixar since 2014, explained the studio’s approach to making films that balance big ideas and accessibility to all age groups. "We always think about those things. I’m often surprised at how astute kids are at figuring out bigger ideas. Historically, our films have dealt with more sophisticated themes," Morris said. "We’ve tried to make them accessible to everyone in the audience. It’s something we’re constantly working on. We make a certain kind of film that does have ideas in it. We don’t want to stop doing that. But we obviously want audiences to go to theaters for our films."

‘Elemental’ Review
Image
Features the voices of: Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera | Written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, Brenda Hsueh | Directed by Peter Sohn

Directed by Peter Sohn (The Good Dinosaur), Elemental is the 27th film from animation studio Pixar, whose films are so reliably emotional that they might as well come with a will-make-you-cry guarantee. True to form, Elemental sticks closely to the Pixar formula, mixing a high concept with a strong central metaphor to tell an extremely sweet love story that’s certain to make you shed a tear or two.

Many of Pixar’s films essentially ask, ‘What if such-and-such a thing had feelings and emotions?”, whether it’s toys in Toy Story or emotions themselves in Inside Out (still one of Pixar’s best). This time round, that concept applies to the elements, namely fire, water, earth and air,...

Leah Lewis at Cannes Festival Photocall 2023 for Pixar's Elemental

Leah Lewis at Cannes Festival Photocall 2023 for Pixar's Elemental
There are four classical elements of nature. Air, earth, fire, water. That's by some schemes anyway, but it'll do. All of them are represented here, to mixed effect. There are an infinite number of arguments as to the primary elements of film. Most of them are represented here too, and also to mixed effect.

Ember (Leah Lewis) is born to a family living in Element City, her parents Bernie (Ronnie Del Carmen) and Cinder (Shila Ommi) early arrivals in what's implied to be a fourth wave of immigration. In Firetown their grate is laid, a shop a spark to community through trade. I rhyme there as much from playful desire as to lead me to the film's lack of songs. I can't fairly complain that a film doesn't do something, but it is odd that a story that relies on separation and synthesis doesn't make use of a core feature of.

Elemental Voice Cast Guide: What The Actors Look Like In Real Life
Image
The Elemental cast features an impressive group consisting of newcomers and seasoned veterans playing characters representing the elements of nature for Pixar's 27th feature film. The animated movie tells the touching story of two young anthropomorphic elemental beings — one is fire, and the other is water — who fall in love despite the prejudices that exist between their people (and obvious practical barriers that come with being made out of fire and water). Like many of the studio's crowning achievements, Pixar's Elemental features a simple plot that is counterbalanced by the studio's amazing storytelling craft and unique visual language.

The unique plot and premise of Elemental is all supplemented by a stellar ensemble of voice talent. Though the cast of Elemental doesn't necessarily jump off the page as a roster of A-list names, many of the actors involved in the movie are experts at their craft and have lent their...

Elemental Composer Thomas Newman On Scoring An Original Pixar World
Image
In Elemental fire, water, earth, and air co-exist in Element City, although they live relatively separate lives, with elements never intermingling. However, this all changes when Wade, an emotional water element, and Ember, a quick-tempered fire element, work together to try and save her family's shop. The pair grows closer, and as they spend more time together, unexpected feelings develop that could change the makeup of Element City forever.

Elemental is directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream, the team behind The Good Dinosaur. It was co-written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Sohn working closely with them to create the story, pulling from his own life experiences. Elemental stars Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O'Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera, and Matt Yang King.

John Hoberg & Kat Likkel Interview: Elemental
Image
Elemental stars with the four elements of water, air, earth, and fire co-existing peacefully in Element City. However, they live relatively separate lives, with Ember, a hot-headed fire element, and her family running a store in Firetown. When Wade, an overly emotional water element and city inspector, is sucked through the pipes and notes a number of violations, Ember's family legacy is in danger. She and Wade work together to try and save her family's store and slowly grow closer, with feelings developing. Although it breaks a cardinal rule about elements mixing, Wade and Ember's feelings could change Element City forever as opposites attract and create something entirely new.

Director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream, the team behind The Good Dinosaur, joined forces once again to bring Pixar's newest movie, Elemental, to the big screen. Elemental was co-written by John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh, with Sohn...

Peter Sohn & Desine Ream Interview Elemental
Image
Elemental examines the age-old question of whether opposites attract. In Element City, air, water, earth, and fire coexist peacefully for the most part, although the elements tend not to mix. Wade, an overly emotional water element, and Ember, a quick-to-anger fire element, become an unlikely duo as they work together to save her family's shop. They slowly learn more about one another, grow closer, and eventually begin to develop feelings for each other. Although this goes against the norm, Ember and Wade's unexpected feelings could change Element City forever.

The team behind The Good Dinosaur teams up once again, with Peter Sohn directing Elemental and Denise Ream serving as his producer. John Hoberg, Kat Likkel, and Brenda Hsueh co-wrote the script for Elemental, but Sohn helped co-create the story with them, with much of it based on his own life experiences. ‘Elemental’ Movie Review: A Rare Pixar Misfire
Image
Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie) in ‘Elemental’ (Photo © 2022 Disney/Pixar)

The four elements – wind, water, fire, and earth – are the focus of Pixar’s animated romantic comedy Elemental. The fact the elements co-exist in the same city but in their own areas provides the setup for an unlikely romance.

Elemental opens with Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis), a fiery young woman, working at her father’s shop in Firetown that she’s destined to take over one day. But there’s just one problem… Ember has a bad temper and is quick to anger, which makes her terrible at dealing with customers, especially rude and obnoxious ones. Her father, Bernie (voiced by Ronnie Del Carmen), assures her that she’ll eventually get the hang of dealing with customers and get ahold of her temper.

Ember discovers a leak in the shop’s basement during a special sale at the shop,...

‘Elemental’ review round-up: Peter Sohn directs ‘one of Pixar’s best films’
Image
On June 16, 2023, Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios released “Elemental,” which features the voices of Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Joe Pera, and Matt Yang King. Directed by Peter Sohn, the film centers on two elements (Ember and Wade) that are literally fire and water, a relationship that is frowned upon in society. The duo works to maintain their relationship despite the expectations of society.

At the 76th Cannes Film Festival, the film was screened for critics to mixed reviews, but those have trended upward upon national release resulting in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 76%. General audiences are more favorable, grading it at 92% fresh. Read our full review round-up below.

Is New Pixar Movie ‘Elemental’ Available to Stream Now? When Will It Be Available on Disney+?
Image
Just in time for summer, Disney and Pixar are back in their element with their latest animated release! After debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the original animated picture “Elemental” blows into theaters in the U.S. on Friday, June 16.

Directed by Peter Sohn, “Elemental” brings audiences to Element City, where a host of elements — air, earth, water, and fire — live and work. Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie lead the voice cast as Ember Lumen and Wade Ripple, respectively. The fiery and quick-witted Ember has trouble controlling her explosive temper and will be extinguished if she is touched by water.

This becomes a point of contention after one day when her rage causes a water pipe in her family’s convenience store to break, summoning Wade, a fun and sappy water element health inspector who threatens to shut down the shop. Ember must venture outside of her comfort...

Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in Romeo and Juliet (1968)
Elemental Review: Fire and Water Come Together in Pixar’s Overstuffed Rom-Com
Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting in Romeo and Juliet (1968)
With Elemental, Pixar’s infrastructure drama is here at last. Yes, there’s a Romeo and Juliet-inspired love story, a tale as old as time of immigrants fighting to sustain their hard-won stability, and a parable about accepting and celebrating human—or rather, atomic—differences packed into the film. But Elemental’s plot is really driven by a buddy quest to follow the pipes and repair the leak responsible for causing increasingly frequent flooding in Fire Town, on the outskirts of Elemental City, a metropolis inhabited by the natural elements.

It’s not in Elemental’s best interests that its characters—and thus, its basic concept—are so difficult to describe. The fire people are some sort of humanoid flames and the water people humanoid drops, but not all fire or water in this world is sentient (it’s the regular kind of water that’s causing those pesky...

Elemental Review: Vibrant Animation & Interesting Ideas Clash With Weak Story
Image
There are few brands as well-respected in Hollywood as Pixar, though the iconic animation studio has faced an awkward period ever since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. With its best 2020s offerings going straight to Disney+ and its grand return to theaters largely considered a disappointment (Lightyear), many have turned to Pixar's latest release, Elemental, with some high expectations. On paper, the colorful and impressively animated film appears to be a return to form for the studio. In reality, Elemental is bursting with clever ideas and timely social commentary, but ultimately passes over both for a more conventional tale.

In the vividly-drawn Element City, the four elements live together in not-quite harmony. Water, air, and earth folk mingle freely on the streets, at sporting matches, and on public transit while, in their own neighborhood removed from the rest of the city, the fire people have formed their own tight-knit community.

‘Elemental’: Pixar’s Steamiest Love Story Will Leave You Cold

Elemental — Pixar’s 27th film, and the first to feature star-crossed lovers that literally become steamy when they kiss — forces you to answer a lot of questions right off the bat. Can a young man made entirely out of liquid ever find true romance with a fiery young woman? Could a metropolis with a population comprised of the four natural elements function as an urban melting pot, with disparate and possibly destructive parties finding a way to live in perfect harmony? Must the children of first-generation immigrants be forever burdened...
