Elena Oxman’s “Outerlands” is a film of great cinematic sleight of hand. The withdrawn San Francisco drama, about lonely nonbinary nanny and restaurant server Cass (Asia Kate Dillon), is simple in its presentation, but disguises numerous layers to its story. These eventually unravel, and build to an emotional wallop. When work crush Kalli (Louisa Krause) suddenly leaves town, Cass is placed in charge of her quiet but headstrong 11-year-old daughter, Ari (Ridley Asha Bateman). The longer Kalli stays away, the more Cass is forced to reckon not just with the possibility that Ari has been abandoned, but with their own childhood abandonment, which continues to ripple in the present.

This straightforward plot is often broken up by poetic interludes, made up of languid shots of a changing cityscape. Once a bustling queer capital, the inequality plaguing San Francisco has reached something of a breaking point. On one side stand tech company high rises.

It's been seven years since the word "Kachow!" was blasted from theater speakers in Cars 3, and like all great Disney Pixar movies, fans want more.

Thanks to an official survey on the D23 website (via @HollywoodHandle on X), fans now know that Cars 4 could be in development. The survey asked fans which project they're most looking forward to at the Disney-centric convention. Surprisingly, Cars 4 was listed among the movies. DeLaria posted the video Monday in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling the former president is immune from prosecution for any “official acts” while in office. The American actor has been confirmed by Deadline to be starring in a main role on There She Goes, which will feature Shes All Thats Rachael Leigh Cook in a story loosely based on the actresss very own experiences in the 90s. It isn’t every day you encounter a pop-disco musical about a buoyant aspiring circus performer and a brooding aspiring rock singer with competing Mommy issues falling in love in Mexico City against the electricized rearrangements of the Indigo Girls. And that’s not exactly lamentable, because I wouldn’t categorize English-language Glitter & Doom as necessarily essential cinema … though I also couldn’t accuse it of being anything other than original either. (Well, except for the foundational premise of opposites attracting and then ultimately clashing over dueling artistic ambitions.) Director Tom Gustafson (Were the World Mine) has crafted a sweet if plodding love story but it’s hard to truly hate on this whirling candy-colored poetic fairytale — it’s just too sincere, much like the musical source material.

Let’s start here: the production design in Tom Gustafson’s Glitter & Doom is impeccable, colorful, and memorable. Too often these days films lack an adventurous color palette. Here we have a welcome outlier. Production designer Geo Martínez breathes life into each frame. Next there’s the music. The film is a musical set to the indelible tunes of the Indigo Girls, the folk-rock duo that became a household name in the late ’80s and early ’90s with hits like “Closer to Fine” and “Galileo.” Without question are music and lyrics the most essential piece of this problematically simple narrative. These artists are long overdue for legacy-laden admiration and celebration.

Now, for some criticism. We have Glitter (Alex Diaz) who wants to be a successful circus performer. We have Doom (Alan Cammish) who wants to be a successful musician. Both are struggling as they tilt at the windmills of their dreams.

It’s been almost exactly 35 years since the Indigo Girls first broke out with their eponymous second album, yet the Power of Two continues to thrive still, especially on the screen. “Barbie” recently pointed us “in a crooked line” with Margot Robbie’s rendition of “Closer to Fine”, while last year’s Sundance doc, titled “It’s Only Life After All“, brought us up close and personal with the duo themselves.

Following those movie tributes now comes another, in the form of “Glitter & Doom,” a jukebox musical that celebrates the enduring legacy that Amy Ray and Emily Saliers have crafted through their raw, passionate, and deeply personal brand of queer folk rock. The Indigo Girls are getting their own “Mamma Mia”-esque music-based film.

The iconic duo, who recently led 2023 documentary “It’s Only Life After All,” provide the soundtrack for fantastical queer romance film “Glitter and Doom.” Billed as a jukebox musical, the film features 25 reimagined Indigo Girls songs, produced and arranged by “The Voice” runner-up contestant Michelle Chamuel. Classics like “Galileo,” “Get Out the Map,” “World Falls,” and “Power of Two” are featured, as well as a new Indigo Girls track “What We Wanna Be.”

The official synopsis for the film reads: “‘Glitter and Doom’ follows the love at first sight journey of a circus dreamer (Alex Diaz) and struggling musician (Alan Cammish). An undeniable spark sets an epic summer romance on its course until the realities of pursuing their dreams threaten to tear them apart.”

The Obie Awards, the venerable honors for outstanding Off Broadway and Off Off Broadway productions, is doing away with its annual ceremony and will instead use the funds to provide winners with grants ranging from $1,000-$5,000.

Heather Hitchens, the president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, which presents the Obies, called the grants a new path forward for the awards, saying the move “genuinely reflects the ethos of the Awards as well as the Off & Off Off Broadway movements – which is to continuously evolve and meet the moment.”

Music Box Films has acquired Tom Gustafson and Cory Krueckeberg’s “Glitter & Doom.” The film is billed as a “fantastical queer romance” and the musical comes with songs from the Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls. “Glitter & Doom” premiered as the closing night film at InsideOut Toronto. It went on to play gala slots at more than 50 LGBTQ+ festivals around the world. Music Box is planning a March 8, 2024, theatrical release in NYC and L.A. That will be followed by a nationwide theatrical rollout and a VOD release.

The film comes at a time when Indigo Girls have been enjoying a popular resurgence. David Hyde Pierce has heard the rallying cries of striking actors from outside the building he’s been rehearsing in. The Frasier star has been performing in the off-Broadway musical Here We Are for the last month, and finally found time to join union members Friday on the picket lines outside of Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery’s offices in New York City.

“I’d look at my friends protesting everyday thinking, I wish I could be there and cheer on from rehearsal,” Pierce tells Rolling Stone. “So finally, I get to participate.

Exclusive: Emily Mann, who directed Daphne Rubin-Vega in the 2012 Broadway production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, will re-team with both the actor and the playwright in December with an Off Broadway revival of The Night of the Iguana co-starring Tim Daly.

Also featured in the cast will be Lea DeLaria, Austin Pendleton and Jean Lichty. Previews begin December 6 at the Irene Diamond Stage at the Pershing Square Signature Center, with opening night on December 17. The engagement will run through February 25, 2024.

The staging is a production of La Femme Theatre Productions, a company dedicated to showcasing the diverse female experience. The announcement describes the production as “an evocative 21st century production of Tennessee Williams’s timeless masterpiece.”

“The Night of the Iguana poses critical questions of faith and identity that are particularly relevant today as we navigate a paradoxically divided yet open world,” Lichty said in a statement.

According to What’s on Netflix, Brown's feature film joins A Family Affair starring Nicole Kidman, Lift featuring Kevin Hart, Players starring Gina Rodriguez, Shirley with Regina King, and another Adam Sandler flick Spaceman, which have all been delayed until 2024. In Damsel, the British actress stars as Princess Elodie. The movie also stars Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, Ray Winstone, and Nick Robinson. Brown also serves as an executive producer. Filming wrapped up in the summer of 2022; however, it has been put back from October 2023 release date to some time in 2024. The rescheduled premiere of Damsel has not been announced as the writers' and actors' strikes continue to make waves in Hollywood.

An audience of several hundred people including card-waving members of SAG-AFTRA squeezed into a barricaded pedestrian plaza on a humid day when at least one spectator required medical attention. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, cast members of the hit series Orange Is the New Black have raised their voices against pay inequality and financial struggles within the entertainment industry. As the negotiation deadline for the strike looms, the show's actors highlight the disparity between the show's massive success and their own financial compensation.

Earlier this week, it marked ten years since Orange Is the New Black premiered on Netflix, quickly becoming one of the most popular and acclaimed series on the streaming service. After seven very well-received seasons, the show created by Jenji Kohan came to an end in 2019 and to this day remains one of the best on the streaming platform.

Based on the book Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman, which recounts her own experiences in federal prison, the series follows the story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), who must face sentence after having helped her ex-girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) to move illegal money to different countries as part of a drug trafficking network.

However, the main attraction of the show was not exactly Piper's story, except for her romance with Alex, but the past and present of all the inmates.

Orange Is the New Black helped put Netflix on the map. Now, several of the supporting stars on the trailblazing prison dramedy are looking back on the show’s breakout and continued success to ask why they weren’t fairly compensated.

Awkwafina may be heading under the sea for “The Little Mermaid” and fighting Dracula in “Renfield” this spring, but at heart, the BAFTA nominee is still Nora from Queens. Season 3 of the star’s Comedy Central series, aptly titled “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” will premiere on April 26. The season comes over a year after the show’s sophomore outing ended in October 2021.

Originally premiering in January 2020, “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” stars the “Farewell” actor as a fictionalized version of herself, in a family drama set in her home neighborhood of Flushing, Queens. The show follows Nora as she navigates her twenties in New York City, with the support of her tightknit family. Bd Wong stars as her father Wally, Lori Tan Chinn as her grandmother, Bowen Yang as her cousin Edmund, and Jennifer Esposito as Wally’s girlfriend Brenda.
