Matt Damon in Downsizing (2017)
Venice Announces 2017 Lineup, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Suburbicon,’ ‘mother!,’ and Many More
Matt Damon in Downsizing (2017)
Will 2017 be the year that Venice gets its king-making mojo back? After a steady run of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — the festival missed out on last year’s big winner, “Moonlight,” which bowed at Telluride. This year’s lineup is a promising one, and while it’s still very early in the process, it’s difficult not to pick through today’s announcement of the festival’s slate and not search for the big contenders.

As was previously announced, the festival will open with Alexander Payne’s social satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. The festival will also play home to the premiere of the Netflix original “Our Souls at Night,” as part of their planned tribute to stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Annette Bening will lead the competition jury, ending an 11-year succession of male jury chiefs.

Ang Lee Set to Direct 'Life of Pi' for Fox?
Nikki Finke is reporting Ang Lee will direct a film adaptation of Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize winning novel "Life Of Pi" for Fox 2000, and her assumed reasoning sounds a bit stupid. "Since Slumdog Millionaire is going to win the Best Picture Oscar, it makes sense that Hollywood is mining all the Indian stories it has at its studios," Finke says. Does anyone actually believe the Indian setting for Slumdog is the reason for its success? Last I checked people were hailing the story, the music and just about everything else with the fact it had a Bollywood-vibe to it last, if at all. I could be wrong, but I don't see any reason why Hollywood would want to "mine their Indian stories" unless they were quality products, which "Life of Pi" sounds like it is. "Life of Pi" is set in Pondicherry, India and centers on Piscine Molitor...

'Game' over for Muccino, Diaz, Carrey
The much-ballyhooed reteaming of Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz for Focus Features' A Little Game Without Consequence has turned out to be short-lived. Both Carrey and Diaz have exited the project, which was announced in early September (HR 9/6). The movie's director, Gabriele Muccino, also has departed. Production was to have started this month in New York. Sources cited problems with the script as the principal reason for the departures. The script was said to have gone in a different direction than the actors expected when they became involved. Allan Loeb (Things We Lost in the Fire) penned a draft of the screenplay based on a play by Jean Dell and Gerald Sibleyras, which also was turned into the 2004 French film Un petit jeu sans consequence, written by Bernard Rapp. Muccino wrote the most recent draft.

Carrey, Diaz play 'Game' for Focus pic
Jim Carrey will reteam with Cameron Diaz in Focus Features' A Little Game Without Consequence. It will be their first feature together since 1994's The Mask, which boosted both of their careers. The film will be directed by Gabriele Muccino, who has helmed the upcoming The Pursuit of Happyness, starring Will Smith. The comedy-drama revolves around a married couple who have been happily married for five years but decide to play a trick on their friends by pretending to break up only to discover that most of their friends and family never thought they belonged together in the first place. Allan Loeb (Things We Lost in the Fire) penned the screenplay based on a play by Jean Dell and Gerald Sibleyras, which was turned into the 2004 French film Un petit jeu sans consequence, written by Bernard Rapp. Producing are Alain Chabat and Stephanie Danan through their Los Angeles-based banner WAM along with Muccino's producing partner Domenico Procacci. The project will begin filming next month in New York.
