Horror subgenres tend to go through periods of waxing and waning popularity. For example, slasher movies exploded in the early 1980s, died out a bit, came back strong in the late '90s, and so on. One of the more intriguing (and perhaps undersung) horror subgenres is that of the psycho-biddy film, also known as Hagsploitation. As with most all horror cinema subgenres, the trend wasn't created from whole cloth, but instead grew out of elements that had already been present in pop culture.
While it might appear that Hagsploitation is solely about a fear of (or at least an anxiety about) aging — and thus a fear of our own mortality — that's not quite accurate. In general, the psycho-biddy film, as that name suggests, puts an emphasis on elderly women rather than men. The fear that's exploited isn't one of aging or decrepitude, but...

NBC has announced that the 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” will hit the airwaves October 4, a date that is still nearly two months into the future. Meanwhile, its been about three months since “SNL” has graced us with a new set of hilarious(-to-mid) sketches, and last season was one of the series’ most eventful, since it was the 50th lap for the pop culture staple. During its half-centennial run, there was even a movie — about but unaffiliated to the series — about the making of its first episode.
The whole 50th ballyhoo led up to an all-star three-plus hour anniversary show that premiered Sunday (naturally), February 16. The audience was like an Oscar or Emmy night roster: Cher, Robert De Niro, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Zach Galifianakis, Jack Nicholson, Ayo Edebiri, Steve Martin, and Emma Stone, among many more. Meryl Streep appeared in her very first “SNL” sketch, for heaven’s sake.

After many years of working on the notable horror franchise, “The Purge,” writer/director James Demonaco created a new film starring Pete Davidson as the lead. “The Home” takes place in a retirement home, where Max (played by Davidson) is subject to work at. Max has a rebellious spirit as he grew up as a foster kid and lost his brother, Lou, at a young age. He has an aloof attitude when he starts his new job, being weirded out by the elders but not to any significant enough point where it causes conflict…yet. Throughout the movie, Max learns that the folks at the retirement home are harboring secrets that they desperately don’t want him to learn about. As the plot unfolds, we see him go through his hero’s arc as he unveils what is hidden in the home, and by the end, the payoff for his discoveries is lethal.

Those of us who are film critics, especially ones who cover horror, watch so many movies that it’s hard to find one that leaves us genuinely shaken. One of the scariest movies of the year thanks to how effectively it conjures up a threat that feels genuinely and thoroughly sinister, Stuart Ortiz’s Strange Harvest will have you both looking away and on the edge of your seat — a combination that will prove to be completely unforgettable.
Strange Harvest Review
Strange Harvest is a horror “mockumentary” following a group of detectives on the hunt for a serial killer named “Mr. Shiny,” known for committing a series of grotesque, ritualistic murders tied to an otherworldly force. Much like the films it references, Ortiz’s movie draws viewers in with a twisted, twisty mystery that will leave viewers shaken by the evil potential of humanity.

A new horror film called The Home, from The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco, reached theatres last Friday, and while JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols wasn’t thrilled by the movie (you can read his 4/10 review Here), lead actor Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) did find the filming of one particular scene to be quite unnerving – and he put his own eyeball at risk so DeMonaco could get the shot! At least it ended up being enough of a notable moment that it’s featured on the poster, which shows a syringe needle almost touching an eyeball.
Scripted by DeMonaco and Adam Canto, The Home sees Davidson taking on the role of Max, a troubled man who starts working at a retirement home and realizes its residents and caretakers harbor sinister secrets. Plot: Follows Max, who realizes that the residents and caretakers in the retirement home he started working at hide sinister secrets.
Review: A nursing home has always felt like an ideal setting for a horror film. There are so many different angles to take, whether it be supernatural or simple elderly abuse. The Home decides to take the mystery route, as the staff are clearly up to no good. The story follows Max (Davidson), a foster kid who has been lost in life since his foster brother took his own life. After some criminal acts, he’s forced to work at an old folks home, to serve his community service. But he starts to notice that something is wrong with the residents, and wants to save them from the evil taking them.

It’s a big weekend for smaller indie distributors – or at least not the biggest – as they spotted a weekend with nothing new from A24 or Neon and just one major studio opening in what has, and will be, been a crowded summer.
MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 800-pound gorilla – other studio films “cleared out of the weekend,” says one indie distribution executive. So edgier fare has a better shot. Sony Pictures Classics’ Oh, Hi! and Roadside Attractions’ The Home open on 1,000 screens, IFC’s House on Eden on 600. Magnolia doc Folktales, Oscilloscope’s Diciannove and Greenwich Entertainment’s Shoshana are limited releases, which can always be good counter-programming.
“Often in the summer you are constantly just fighting for screens and looking for whatever weekend you can get the most theaters,” said another exec. Not that it’s a breeze to find space, with tentpole fare...

Let's be honest. When you hear the name Pete Davidson, you don't think of horror movies, right? You think of things like Saturday Night Live, Ariana Grande, and the 2020 dramedy The King of Staten Island. Maybe Bodies Bodies Bodies comes to mind, but his name isn't exactly synonymous with the genre. Kudos to him for trying something different, though, but unfortunately his new psychological horror flick, The Home, missed the mark with critics upon its release today, earning just a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Ninety-seven torturous minutes of muddled storytelling, tiresome horror tropes and poorly delivered social commentary," said MovieWeb's own Mark Keizer in his review of The Home, while Robert Daniels from RogerEbert.com added that it's "a brain-dead horror film whose potential for fun campy excess is undercut by its own self-satisfied twist and its illogical turns." James DeMonaco is known for creating the iconic Purge franchise, which sadly feels more prescient with each passing day. But after a slew of successful films, DeMonaco is branching out with a new tale of terror: The Home, which tackles the massive topic of aging. Written by DeMonaco and his writing partner Adam Cantor, they both prove that they know how to craft one heck of a wild and creepy movie.
In the new film:
A rebellious twenty-something is sentenced to community service at a quiet retirement home. The residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits, said to require “special care.” As his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, he uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.
In our exclusive clip, our hero gets a glimpse at what lurks on the mysterious fourth floor.

James DeMonaco’s elder care thriller The Home feels like another movie’s in-universe fake watch. Like, if in a Scream sequel, teens exclaimed, “Shut up, I’m trying to watch the Pete Davidson old folks horror flick!” It’s predictable yet outlandish; a narrative that operates by presuming you know what’s coming and that doesn’t matter. DeMonaco and co-writer Adam Cantor deal in the horrors of twilight years and Boomerisms, but commentaries get lost in a jump-around tale of asylum frights under the guise of senior care. Where The Rule of Jenny Pen is a more psychological takedown of aged paranoias, The Home opts for gruesome midnighter wackiness—whether intentional or not.

Pete Davidson of Saturday Night Live fame is known for his comedic timing and his stand-up shows. However, the actor and comedian has further branched out to different genres and has just had his first true attempt at a horror film with The Home, after first having a go in the dark comedy horror with 2022's Bodies Bodies Bodies.
The horror film just debuted in theaters, and it comes from The Purge creator James DeMonaco. The Home had all the ingredients for a successful horror release, with a chilling premise and an experienced filmmaker. However, as The Home hit theaters on Jul. 25, the horror debuted with an abysmal 26% approval score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The psychological horror's rating comes from 19 reviews, and the score might fluctuate as more opinions come in. However, The Home is not off to a great start. Since the film has just premiered, there is no audience score available,...

In the summer of 2013, Staten Island writer/director James DeMonaco threw a party for his just-released movie “The Purge” in a neighborhood restaurant.
“We had the party after the movie opened because we didn’t think it was going to do any business,” DeMonaco told IndieWire. While celebrating the surprise hit that would spawn four sequels, two directed by DeMonaco and all scripted by him, the filmmaker talked with a busboy. “He came over and said he was a fan of the movie, and we just kept in touch.”
The busboy DeMonaco kept in touch with was future “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson, and when the two Staten Island natives learned how much they had in common, a bond was forged.
“He and I never felt like we fit into the fabric of the hyper-masculine tough guy Staten Island mentality,” DeMonaco said. “I don’t want to say his...

“The Home” has some curiosity value attached to it: How will “Saturday Night Live” alum Pete Davidson fare in his first non-comedic performance? However, its major selling point might be that it comes from James DeMonaco, the filmmaker behind the commercially successful “The Purge” franchise. Audiences drawn to “The Home” for either reason might come out disappointed. Davidson shows he may not have the chops to carry a horror film, while DeMonaco fails to deliver any thrills this time. Ultimately, it’s a by-the-numbers effort that proves quite disappointing.
Davidson plays Max, a troubled young man sentenced to four months of community service at a retirement home in remote upstate New York. Max grew up in a foster home run by kind parents (Jessica Hecht and Victor Williams), though they are all now grieving the passing of his foster brother who died by suicide. “The Purge” series writer and director James DeMonaco has never shied away from political themes in his movies. But he had a whopper of an idea that led to his latest film, “The Home,” which he directed and co-wrote with Adam Cantor.
“This generation being raped by previous generations coalesced into this idea of this old age community that wasn’t what it seemed,” he says.
In the film, Pete Davidson plays Max, a rough but kind-hearted young man sentenced to community service at a retirement home. But he quickly learns that the residents — played by veteran actors like John Glover and Bruce Altman — and the facility itself hold some dark and deadly secrets.
Needless to say, DeMonaco says this horror movie ultimately underscores tension between generations.

Early in James DeMonaco’s The Home, the deeply troubled Max (Pete Davidson) arrives at the retirement home where he’s been assigned to work as a janitor for community service hours, and it’s instantly clear that something is really off about the place. Max first eyes a creepy-looking old person staring out of a window on the top floor before walking inside the home and hearing 1930s big band music playing slightly out of tune on a Victrola and, then, peeping into a room to find an elderly woman in a porcelain doll mask having sex.
It’s all meant to be ominous, but there’s a randomness to these supposedly unsettling sights and sounds that we glimpse throughout the film—a hodgepodge of jump scares and disturbing imagery in search of a cohesive story. DeMonaco and Adam Cantor’s script is full of twists and turns that...

The hype around Pete Davidson as a movie star has seemingly dissipated as he stepped back into stand-up comedy. While the actor and comedian continues to have a strong presence in popular culture, he has taken a step towards more cameos and voice acting performances over the past two years. However, The Home gives him a legitimate starring vehicle for the first time since Bupkis. It also allows him to team up with horror director James DeMonaco, best known for his work on The Purge franchise. While Davidson does his best to keep The Home interesting, there are a few too many tropes in the flick. The amazing finale almost makes the entire endeavor worthwhile.
The Home Plot
After years in the foster home system, Max (Davidson) struggles to find his place in the outside world. After another arrest, his foster parents get him a new job at an elderly care home.

Ever since his brother died, Max (Pete Davidson), the protagonist of James DeMonaco’s new horror film The Home, has moved through the world with a melancholic listlessness. He’s plagued by nightmares of his final days with Luke (Matthew Miniero), a gangly teen who took his own life when Max was 11 years old. When Max, now in his 20s, can’t sleep, he hops out of bed and tags buildings with murals pulled from his dreams.
When we meet Max, he’s been arrested by cops for trespassing and spray painting. His adoptive parents (Jessica Hecht and Victor Williams) bail him out and cut a deal with the authorities: In lieu of jail time, Max will serve as a superintendent for a nursing home. The gig isn’t ideal, but neither is the reality of prison.

If the late, great George A. Romero has an heir apparent, James DeMonaco has a serious claim to the throne. His film series “The Purge,” about a yearly American holiday where murder is legal, is — much like Romero’s zombie movies — a blistering critique on modern America’s decay, which shines a light on the fragility of social structures we take for granted. Except in DeMonaco’s world people have not turned on each other because civilization collapsed. In “The Purge,” civilization collapsed because people wanted an excuse to turn on each other.
So a brand new DeMonaco film is always an exciting prospect. Or at least, it was until “The Home.” “The Home” is yet another angry film. The target of its ire is relevant and it warrants skewering. But for some reason DeMonaco, who’s usually so eager to confront his audience, pulls his biggest punches. “The Home...

Horror movies with the theme of “old people are scary” are a dime a dozen, but how can we revitalize this formula? Ask James DeMonaco, creator of the Purge films, whose new film, The Home, subverts audience expectations of this tried-and-true subgenre with an explosively violent touch bearing his signature.
We at FandomWire got to speak with James DeMonaco about his new psychological horror picture, what he learned from creating and working on the Purge franchise, and why comedian Pete Davidson was an unexpectedly great fit to work in this genre.

James DeMonaco: I never wanted to leave. [He laughs.] I just love the genre, man. I think I’m an action-horror guy at heart.

Evil never gets old in The Home, and neither do horror movies for filmmaker James DeMonaco.
“I think horror is the best genre to watch with a crowd,” DeMonaco tells me. “I also think it’s a great vessel to smuggle sociopolitical commentary, like John Carpenter and George Romero did. It’s still fun to get people thinking.”

The Purge creator James DeMonaco updated fans on the franchise's next installment. He also teased "a couple of characters" returning in the sequel.
The Purge 6 is making headway now that Blumhouse has the finished script, creator James DeMonaco told Bloody Disgusting. "My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum]," he said. "We're hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. But now it's with the powers that be, so we'll see what happens." To date, the franchise has released five films and a TV series, which ran for two seasons.
The Purge films adopted the best elements of home invasion movies, slashers, and crime thrillers. Each installment expanded the lore of the 2013 original, but 2014's The Purge: Anarchy is arguably the best in the franchise. That film also introduced Frank Grillo as Sgt.

In the movie, Davidson plays a young troublemaker sentenced to serve community service, which he does at a seemingly innocuous nursing home. What's peculiar about the facility is that the residents on the fourth floor are entirely off limits, and it's not long before he goes digging, eager to uncover whatever it is that the staff appears to be hiding. A tense clip from The Home, featuring Davidson observe something strange on the security cameras, can be watched below.

The Purge 6gets a major script update with returning character teases from creator James DeMonaco, who wrote all five installments in the franchise, starting with 2013's The Purge. Taking place in a dystopian, crime-free America, each movie revolves around the annual event, where all crimes are legal for 12 hours on a single day.
In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, DeMonaco offered a script update and a character tease for The Purge 6. The franchise creator revealed that they have "finished a script," and have "just handed it" to the franchise's long-time producer, Jason Blum.
He shared that they are hoping to shoot as soon as "the end of this year" or "next year" and teased that a fan-favorite character "might be coming back," though he didn't reveal a name. Check out his comment below:

The multi-picture horror thriller franchise known as The Purge is set to return sooner than you can shut your windows and arm your house against maniacs. James DeMonaco, franchise producer and creator, has officially confirmed that he has written a sixth entry in the dystopian universe, and not only that, but he has included the return of a fan-favorite character. It's time to start speculating about who it could be, though we have our fingers crossed that it's the badass action hero played by Frank Grillo, a.k.a. Leo Barnes.
DeMonaco is currently promoting his next film, The Home, the psychological horror feature starring Pete Davidson and John Glover set to be released in theaters on July 25. The director of the first three Purge films and writer of all the movies in the franchise spoke to Bloody Disgusting while promoting The Home, and spilled the beans about a future sequel to The Purge.

Four years have gone by since Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco let it be known that he had an idea for The Purge 6 that would get him back into the director’s chair (after handing The First Purge and The Forever Purge over to other directors) and see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes, the character he played in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. So much time has passed, fans have probably been doubting that the movie will ever happen at all. But now, DeMonaco has given our friends at Bloody Disgusting a promising update: the script has been finished and submitted to Blumhouse Productions!
DeMonaco told Bloody Disgusting, “I just finished a script. My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum]. I’m really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think it’s cool and fun.

Pete Davidson is making his horror debut with the latest thriller from “The Purge” creator James DeMonaco. After starring in killer comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” Davidson fully leans into the genre with DeMonaco’s “The Home” which is set in a retirement community.
Davidson plays a rebellious twentysomething who is sentenced to community service at the seemingly-quiet nursing home. However, the residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits due to their “special care” procedures. As the logline teases, “as his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, he uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.” John Glover and Bruce Altman also star. DeMonaco directs from a script he co-wrote with Adam Cantor.

"There's something very wrong with his place... Something terribly wrong." Uh I don't want to work there. Lionsgate has dropped the first official trailer for The Home, a new horror movie set for release in July this summer. It's the latest very scary creation from the director of The Purge horror trilogy, James DeMonaco – a haunted retirement home horror flick. The story follows youngster Max, who realizes that the residents & caretakers in the retirement home (with strictly "off-limits" residents on the 4th floor) he started working at may hide sinister secrets. Davidson stars as Max, a former foster child who begins working at the home, and uncovers connections to his own past and upbringing as a foster child. This stars Pete Davidson, John Glover, Bruce Altman, plus lots of old folks. "James and Pete delivered an exhilarating ride of a movie that is pure suspense-filled fun and just plain bonkers.

Pete Davidson discovers the elderly residents and caretakers in a quiet retirement home are keeping chilling secrets that leads to brutal violence in the trailer for Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions’ The Home, which dropped on Thursday.
The Saturday Night Live alum plays Max, a young man sentenced to community service and caring for the elderly in the retirement facility, only to come in contact with the off-limits fourth floor, where residents are in need of “special care.”
“There’s something very wrong with this place,” an elderly woman tells Max at one point in the trailer. Before long, Max is screaming for help and facing a bizarre medical experiment and bloody violence in the nightmarish retirement home.
“Hey man, I’m not going to hurt you,” Max in the teaser tells a resident cowering in a corner, only to turn suddenly and lunge at the young care home assistant.
