This September, Marvel Comics will release Spider-Man '94, a follow-up to Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the same vein as Disney+'s X-Men '97.
The comic book series will pick up with Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, with the couple finally reunited after she went missing during the show's final season. However, writer J.M. DeMatteis has now confirmed that Spider-Man '94 will not reveal the full story behind where she went or how she got home.
"We learn that Peter has gone to hell and back in order to bring Mj home, that they’ve had an incredible, harrowing adventure along the way, but we don’t get into the details," the legendary scribe told Cbr. "As our story opens, they’re home and ready to begin a new life together."

The latest revealed DC Studios television project is a "Booster Gold" TV show from David Jenkins (creator of "Our Flag Means Death"), which has been ordered to pilot at HBO Max (per Deadline). Booster Gold (created by Dan Jurgens in 1986), aka Jon Michael Carter, is a time-traveling superhero from the future. Though he hails from the 25th century, his story is familiar: he's a jock who peaked in high school (being caught gambling on your own games will do that to you). So, he travels back in time in hope of becoming a big fish in a smaller pond.
Though Booster is dense and a self-promoting gloryhound, he's not a bad guy. He's similar to James Gunn's take on Peter Quill/Star-Lord and so should fit naturally into Gunn's new DC Universe if his pilot moves forward. "Booster Gold...

There were a flurry of Marvel superhero cartoons in the 1990s, but there's only two that most people love and remember: "X-Men" (1992-1997) and "Spider-Man" (1994-1998). Spidey and the mutants were indisputably the kings of Marvel in the '90s, and the cartoons cemented that reputation.
Both shows are sometimes given the subtitle "The Animated Series" to play on the contemporary "Batman: The Animated Series." Now, don't get me wrong, "Spider-Man" doesn't measure up to "Batman" in quality. The former was subject to strict storytelling constrictions (many stemming from toy sales) and subpar animation work. The series has also been eclipsed by the later cartoon, "The Spectacular Spider-Man." But for many Spider-fans, lead voice actor Christopher Daniel Barnes is always going to be their Spider-Man.
Indeed, the series remains one of the most influential versions of Spider-Man's story. In fact, a lot of the elements that the Sam Raimi "Spider-Man" films included — namely,...

It’s been more than 80 years since Superman flew off the pages of “Action Comics #1,” and introduced readers to the then-described “Champion of the Oppressed.” The hero has gone on thousands of adventures since his 1930s debut — “Action Comics” alone celebrated its thousandth issue in 2018.
James Gunn’s “Superman” feels like some of these comics flew off the page, adapting everything beautiful, inspiring and outright goofy about the Man of Steel. If you left “Superman” wanting more, check out some of these stories that inspired the Dcu debut.
This list will have no spoilers for “Superman” (2025). If it wasn’t in a trailer, it won’t be mentioned here.
“All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely
“All-Star Superman” should be thought of as the comic book equivalent of the Christopher Reeve/Richard Donner “Superman” movie: there’s nothing quite like it, and it set an immovable gold standard going forward.

Premiering in 1994 and running for five seasons, Spider-Man: The Animated Series is considered one the most popular animated comic book adaptions of all time. The hit series ended with Spider-Man entering the multiverse to save Mary Jane. Now, nearly thirty years later, this cliffhanger is officially resolved as the Spider-man ’94 comic book series continues with storytelling set after the dramatic final episode. Spider-Man: The Animated Seriesmight be getting a continuation in comic book form, but the series' original creator is not involved, and he has some choice words to say about it. Marvel Comics recently announced Spider-Man '94, a comic continuation of the popular animated series that looks to finally resolve the original cliffhanger from the animated series of Peter Parker going off into the multiverse to find Mary Jane Watson. The four-issue limited series will be written by J.M. DeMatteis (who wrote the original series) and feature art by Jim Towe and covers by Nick Bradshaw, Ron Lim, and John Tyler Christopher. One person who won't be involved, however, is Spider-Man: The Animated Series creator John Semper.
Semper took to X (formerly Twitter) to make an announcement clarifying his involvement or lack of participation in Spider-Man '94. "Since I will no doubt be asked about it by fans of the series: No.

For a generation of fans, 1990's Spider-Man: The Animated Series stands as the quintessential take on the web-slinger. Premiering during the golden age of after-school cartoons, the show served as the gateway to the Marvel universe for many young viewers, often becoming their first real exposure to Spider-Man, even before the comic books.
However, the beloved '90s Spider-Man animated series wrapped up in 1998 after 65 episodes, with a dramatic cliffhanger that still lingers in fans’ minds decades later.
In the show's final episode, following the epic multiverse storyline known as “Spider Wars,” Madame Web promises to guide Peter Parker on a dimension-hopping mission to locate the real Mary Jane Watson, who had vanished into an alternate reality earlier in the series. The finale ends with Spider-Man swinging off into the unknown, leaving audiences without closure and wondering if he ever succeeded in reuniting with his lost love.

The beloved Spider-Man: The Animated Seriesis coming back, in a way. Even if no new episodes of the acclaimed production have been announced by Marvel Television, fans of the story will finally get closure thanks to an upcoming limited comic book series. Spider-Man '94 will conclude the cliffhanger that was established in the final episode of the animated series. Mary Jane Watson (Saratoga Ballantine), Peter Parker's (Christopher Daniel Barnes) girlfriend, was trapped and far away from her favorite hero.
Spider-Man '94 will feature Spider-Man saving Mary Jane Watson from what promises to be a horrible fate. The limited comic book series will be written by J. M. DeMatteis, who previously worked with the character in the main Amazing Spider-Manbook. The illustrations for the upcoming project will be created by Jim Towe. Spider-Man: The Animated Series ended with a major cliffhanger in 1998 after the "Secret Wars" and "Spider Wars" storyline concluded with Madame Web taking Peter Parker to find Mary Jane after she was left stranded in another reality, lost to the man who loves her.
X-Men '97 revealed that they'd been reunited when it streamed on Disney+ last year, and now an official comic book sequel will reveal what happened after Spider-Man: The Animated Series ended.
The hope had been that Spider-Man '94 would be an animated series, but that was always unlikely with Marvel Animation moving on to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. This four-issue comic will be written by legendary scribe J.M. DeMatteis (who worked on Spider-Man: The Animated Series) with art by Jim Towe (Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse) and covers by Nick Bradshaw, Ron Lim, and John Tyler Christopher.

Fear not, '90s kids, because the cliffhanger ending from Spider-Man's iconic animated series is finally getting the resolution it deserves. Marvel Comics has announced a brand-new miniseries set in the continuity of Spider-Man: The Animated Series that will finally pick up where the series left off after its shocking fifth season ending.
Marvel Comics just made the day of every Spider-Man fan who was around for the hero's beloved '90s cartoon by announcing Spider-Man '94, a new four-issue miniseries set in the cartoon's canon. The miniseries brings Spider-Man legend (and Spider-Man: The Animated Series' contributor) J.M. Dematteis together with Jim Towe, it’s a great first step that can more than answer anything fans want to know. Heck, it’s also going to include things they didn’t expect, such as the debut of villains who weren’t in the original cartoon. While it remains to be seen...

The character of Venom is about to get his very own horror-themed series called Venom: Black, White and Blood. The Black, White, and Blood title has been attributed to several Marvel-housed characters over the years as a means of presenting a more violent, R-rated take on classic heroes and villains, even scarier than the Venom movie trilogy. More recently, Marvel announced such an anthology series for the Predator franchise.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Marvel will be launching Venom: Black, White & Blood #1 (the first of four issues)on August 20. The first issue is written by Davie Michelinie, J.M. DeMatteis, and Ryan North with art by Jonas Scharf, Dave Wachter, and Creees Lee. Below, readers can find cover art and variants from Greg Capullo, Mark Bagley, Peach Momoko, and Doaly.
The series will offer a collection of stories from Venom's history, including J.M. DeMatteis and Dave Wachter's "Fathers and Sons," taking place after Macimum Carnage.

You mostly know DC Comics for their superhero books, but they've published a fair share of Western comics too: "All-Star Western," "Weird Western Tales," etc. Scarred gunslinger Jonah Hex sometimes crosses over with DC superheroes too. But one 1997 comic went even further out West and turned the Justice League into cowboys: "Justice Riders," scripted by Chuck Dixon and drawn by J. H. Williams III.
In the frontier town of Paradise, the outlaw Felix Faust pulls a daring escape that destroys the town and kills deputy Oberon. Sheriff Diana Prince sets out for revenge and gathers up a posse to bring justice: Kid Flash, Hawkman, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, and Martian Manhunter.
Wait, why these characters? Because it's based on the contemporary Justice League line-up. In the late 80s through the mid-90s, "Justice League" mostly starred more obscure characters. That...

Superman star Nathan Fillion confirms that the bowl cut won't be the only comic-accurate thing about his character Guy Gardner, including his, at times, off-putting personality. After years of being the top fan choice to play Hal Jordan, Fillion is finally putting on the Green Lantern ring, but as the lesser-known, fan-favorite Guy Gardner. His Green Lantern has already made an impression, based on his brief shot in the trailer sporting the worst bowl cut imaginable. Gardner is a very different Green Lantern from what audiences are more likely familiar with, and it sounds like Superman will embrace that.
While speaking to TV Guide about Season 7 of his hit television series, The Rookie, the conversation, naturally, shifted to Superman. Fillion was asked what will separate his version of the Green Lantern from past incarnations, and his answer is just what fans want to hear. Fillion confirms that Gardner will not be the best guy,...

Sony Pictures' woebegotten Spider-Man Universe (no Spider-Man included) kicked off in 2018 with the surprise hit of "Venom," and now has seemingly ended with the disastrous "Kraven The Hunter." Spider-Man is back on the smallscreen in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The series follows an alternate version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man and updates his world for a new generation. The series pays homage to the character's roots with artwork designed to evoke the Spider-Man comics of the 1960s, drawn by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. Marvel Studios revealed the titles of every Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man episode. Some of these episode titles will sound familiar to comic book fans.
The visuals of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man may draw upon the character's earliest appearances in the pages of Marvel Comics, but the series' storylines appear to be taking inspiration from the entirety of Spider-Man's long publication history. Early promotional material for the Disney+ series has already teased this. The first trailer for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man spotlighted Spider-Man's new Oscorp suit, modeled after the comics' Future Foundation suit.

Sean Gunn may voice Weasel and G.I. Robot in the animated series Creature Commandos, but regarding live-action, DC fans are going to recognize him as the DC Universe's Maxwell Lord. The character was previously played by Pedro Pascal in 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, although Gunn isn't worried about stepping into the role so soon after Pascal.
During an interview with The Kristian Harloff Show (via X), Gunn opened up about how his take on Maxwell Lord would differ drastically from Pascal's version in WW84. "I can tell you that the one obvious thing is it's me playing the role. It doesn't just mean I'm going to give a different interpretation," the actor started. Wonder Woman #16 is written by Tom King and drawn by Bruno Redondo. Detective Chimp needs information from Circe, but instead she attacks him. As soon as Circe does, the Spectre pounces.

Some of DC’s oddest and spookiest heroes are gearing up to fight another day. Animated action series “Creature Commandos” has been renewed for Season 2 at Max, Variety reported on December 23.
News of Season 2 was announced in the middle of the show’s run. Season 1, which runs for seven episodes, premiered on December 5 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes released weekly on Thursdays. The finale of the show’s first season is scheduled for January 9.
Created by DC Studios co-head James Gunn, “Creature Commandos” is based on the classic DC Comics team, created by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick in 1980. After much anticipation, the trailer for Superman has finally arrived. The trailer is filled with incredible imagery and a powerful new rendition of John Williams's classic Superman theme music. One particular image has caught people's attention, and it isn't Superman, Lois Lane, or even the adorable Krypto. No, it is Nathan Fillion in a terrible bowl cut shooting out a green light from his finger, letting the audience know this is a Green Lantern but not the one most people are familiar with.
Fillion is playing Guy Gardner, a prominent Green Lantern comic series member but not widely known by a general audience. Aside from a brief cameo in Young Justice and a few episodes on the short-lived Green Lantern series, Guy Gardner certainly has not gotten the attention...

The first trailer for James Gunn's "Superman" is here, but more heroes than David Corenswet's Man of Steel appear. After all, this movie is launching the new silver screen DC Universe. We'd known from previous casting news which heroes would be appearing in "Superman," and the trailer showed some of them in costume. Among them is Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of the many heroes named Green Lantern.
Fillion is a friend of director James Gunn who often appears in his movies. No surprise the actor has a supporting part in "Superman," but Fillion as a Green Lantern is a casting choice that has a lot of history.
In the early 2000s, Nathan Fillion was a popular choice to play Hal Jordan in a "Green Lantern" film; with people even making fanmade trailers with Fillion in the role.

The Creature Commandos have just hit the small screen thanks to their new animated series, but fans of DC’s squad of monster soldiers may not know where to start in looking for more spooky action. DC has a number of comics that would fit the bill, so Screen Rant is here to provide five of the best series to scratch that itch.

The Marvel Universe might have thousands of original heroes populating its world, but there are more than a few who were inspired by DC Comics heroes. The Big Two have both been around for decades and every once in a while, they give a little jab at the competition by making heroes obviously modeled after other heroes.
It’s not that these heroes are jokes at DC Comics’ expense. In fact, many of them have become icons in their own right. But it’s fun to look back on which Marvel heroes were inspired by the publisher’s rival and how different they are from from the original. Read on to discover 8 Marvel heroes inspired by DC Comics.

No villain has been more persistent in his attacks on Batman than the Joker. Every other villain will either retire or give up on their goals. But the Joker has been shown to constantly evolve with Batman; no matter what Batman does, the Joker is still there, matching him every step of the way. I truly think that this means, eventually, that the Joker will end up defeating Batman, and there are tons of stories in the DC Universe that support this theory.
It's no secret that Batman is getting older. Batman has been fighting crime in Gotham for decades at this point. It's only natural that he'd get older and that he'd start to slow down. Because of this, Batman is considering a serum that restores his youth, as seen in Detective Comics #1091 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janín, and Wes Abbott.

Booster Gold has a reputation for being "the greatest hero you never heard of", but despite his relative obscurity compared to giants like Superman and Batman, he's led plenty of great stories over the years. Now, Booster Gold is joining James Gunn's Dcu, finally putting this overlooked hero on the map.

After the Venom trilogy and the Madame Web film, Marvel is now turning its attention to Kraven the Hunter. While the success and future of this new movie are currently unknown, Marvel already has the perfect plot for a blockbuster sequel. If Kraven is going to stick around, there's no reason that Marvel can't take from the best story Kraven has been in, and one movie star agrees.
During an interview with Esquire, Aaron Taylor Johnson, who plays Kraven, talked about a variety of things, including a vodka ad he starred in, his upcoming Nosferatu movie, and Kraven the Hunter. Johnson talked about a variety of topics, but by far the most interesting was his statement about a potential sequel to his Kraven the Hunter movie.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Creature Commandos episodes 1 & 2The Dcu has officially begun with Creature Commandos, an animated Suicide Squad spin-off series from James Gunn. Featuring a largely brand-new team under the control of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), the show's premiere episodes see "Task Form M" being deployed on their first mission. However, there are some key differences between this new team and the roster from the original DC Comics.
A group of arguably non-human monsters assembled by Amanda Waller, the Creature Commandos have been brought together as a means of circumventing Argus' new restrictions from Congress about sending incarcerated humans into the field. As such, Creature Commandos episodes 1 & 2 introduce this new team of operatives led by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) before sending them out to protect the princess of a European nation. "Creature Commandos," and the new DC Universe with it, is here. This animated show has a plot in the same vein as creator James Gunn's 2021 film "The Suicide Squad": U.S. black ops bigwig Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) recruits an eccentric cast of superpowered convicts from across the DC Universe and remakes them into (creature) commandos.
So, government-employed superheroes who are modeled on classic horror movie monsters. Are we talking about the Creature Commandos or the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.)? That organization originates from Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" comics, the best take on the "monsters as superheroes" idea also found in "Creature Commandos."

When it comes to comic book adaptations, lesser-known IPs always provide a greater range of freedom for creators, as the MCU’s entire world-building procedure has proven time and again. In that sense, an animated series based on Creature Commandos, a band of obscure paranormal soldiers inspired by classic modern monster lore, seems like a perfect starting point for the Dcu under James Gunn’s leadership. Team up ventures are his special interest anyways, and from early reviews of the animated series, it seems like the Dcu is off to a great start already. So without wasting any time, let’s take a deep dive into the lore of DC’s League of Horrors and get acquainted with all the members who will appear in the series and the additional roster from comics.

With the upcoming release of DCs Creature Commandos show, its about time to celebrate one of DCs creepiest and most obscure teams. The majority of this unconventionally horrific team is, in reality, simply human. However, these soldiers all underwent significant physical transformations, turning them into classic movie monsters, as a tactic of psychological warfare. Over time, the team has expanded, with truly monstrous allies chosen to fill the ranks.
Originally introduced in Weird Tales #93 (1980) - by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick - and later rebooted in Creature Commandos (2000) - by Tim Truman and Scot Eaton - the team has remained in relative obscurity for the last two decades. But now, as the DC Studios television series is set to premiere on December 5, 2024, theres no better time than to take a glance at some of the teams strongest members. Here are the ten most powerful members of the Creature Commandos team.

There isnt a single executive in Hollywood with the same track record of transparency as James Gunn, and he just dropped yet another update on one of his biggest upcoming projects. On his personal Threads account, Gunn revealed that he is not directing any episodes of Creature Commandos, the upcoming animated Dcu series set to premiere on Max on December 5. Gunn did mention that he was involved in directing the voice actors recordings and was involved in an overseeing capacity, but that other unnamed directors helmed all episodes of the series, with Dean Lorey leading the charge. DeMatteis, Rick Leonardi, Rico Renzi, and Taylor Esposito, in which Dick Grayson takes over as Batman with a Nightwing-inspired Batsuit.

Warning! Spoilers for From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives! #4!The Bat-Family has seen tons of trauma and tragedy, but the person who has suffered the most has always been Red Hood, also known as Jason Todd. Jason never seems to get a good ending, but DC showed that one small change could've given Jason the support and life that he needed to overcome his trauma.
While almost every comic fan knows about Jason's death in the pages of Batman: Death in the Family by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo, DC decided to explore an alternate history in From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives!, which concludes with issue #4 by J.M. DeMatteis, Rick Leonardi, Rico Renzi, and Taylor Esposito. In this story, Jason survives his fateful encounter with the Joker, leaving Jason with significant trauma - but at least he wasn't dead.

Fans have gotten another look at the first true entry in James Gunn's new DC Universe as the DC Studios co-president revealed a new trailer for Creature Commandos during New York Comic-Con. When Gunn announced his new DC slate, which is under the banner of "Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters", fans were taken by surprise when Creature Commandos was on the line-up as an animated series. Not only that, but it would also be the kick-off entry into James Gunn's new Dcu.
While the first trailer shown at San Diego Comic-Con in July gave a general pitch for the series, this new trailer highlights the characters that make up the Creature Commandos and hints at their backstories. Fans get to see action showcasing The Bride, Frankenstein's Monster, Doctor Phosphorus, The Weasel, G.I. Robot, Nina Mazursky, and even the main villain, Circe. Gunn and Warner Bros. also are letting...

Warning: Contains Potential Spoilers for DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1!
As a first-time reader of Creature Commandos, I wasnt sure what to expect, but Im now convinced that they are a darker and better version of DCs iconic Suicide Squad. With it being Spooky Season, this horror-based comic has quickly become a favorite of mine, and now, thanks to it, I can't wait for the TV show's premiere in December.
David Dastmalchian, Jess Hervs, Alex Guimares, and Ferran Delgados DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1 is what Id consider a dark horse comicit surprised me with how great it was.
Its a book that is most likely not on most comic readers' radars, given it features a lesser-known team with more obscure characters. However, with the Creature Commandos TV series set to premiere on December 5, 2024, Im hoping more fans will give this comic a chance. It offers a fresh take on the beloved Suicide Squad premise,...

Joker: Folie à Deux has had a disastrous weekend at the box office and while that does hurt the DC brand, the sequel was made without any involvement from DC Studios whatsoever.
James Gunn did have some input on The Penguin and will take on a similar role for Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II. However, the filmmaker's vision for the Dcu itself is very specific.
He appears to be pulling from several comic book runs and eras, though the Justice League International series from the late 1980s seems to have played a major role in what we'll see from Superman next summer.
Comic Frontier recently spoke with DC Comics artist Kevin Maguire - who worked on Justice League International with Keith Giffen and J. M. DeMatteis - and reflected on visiting the movie's set earlier this year.
"Me and a bunch of other writers and artists were invited...

There are few characters who are as kind as Superman. He goes out of his way to never use more force than necessary in any encounter, which is great considering just how absurdly powerful he is. But there have been a few times when Superman has crossed the line and outright killed someone.
With an infinite number of universes in the multiverse, there's an infinite number of times that Superman went too far and used lethal force. While it's not something that he enjoys doing, and he tries his best to avoid it, there are plenty of times when Superman simply has no other choice or has finally had enough with whoever he is fighting. These are the ten times that Superman put his incredible powers to deadly use and took someone's life.
