Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, who has reigned for more than 50 years and is Europe’s longest-serving monarch, said during her traditional New Year’s Eve speech on Danish television that she will abdicate the throne in early 2024.

The 83-year-old queen said she will hand over the crown to her son, Crown Prince Frederik. on January 14, 2024, 52 years to the day she succeeded her father, King Frederik IX, after his death.

Crown Prince Frederik is 55 years old.

“In February this year I underwent extensive back surgery,” she said during her speech. “Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me. Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation.

“I have decided that now is the right time,” she said.

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II is abdicating the throne.

The 83-year-old royal, Europe’s longest-serving monarch, will abdicate the throne on January 14, 2024 after 52 years and will be succeeded by her eldest son Crown Prince Frederik, she confirmed Sunday (December 31).

The surprising announcement was made on live TV during her traditional New Year’s Eve speech, during which she discussed a back operation she underwent in February.

Pamela Anderson has just sent a letter on PETA’s behalf to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark over the royal family’s use of fur.

In the letter, Anderson – who heard that the Royal family gets their fur from a “trusted source” – respectfully tells Her Majesty that fur production is cruel worldwide and encourages her to join public figures such as Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in going fur-free.

“I had the great pleasure of visiting your beautiful country this month and was thrilled to hear from my friends at PETA that Denmark banned cruel fox-fur farms not long ago,” writes Pam in the letter. London, July 28: Former 'Baywatch' actress Pamela Anderson, a well-known animal rights activist, has written a letter to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, urging her not to use fur in her wardrobe.

The note was penned by the star on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), reports contactmusic.com.

'During my visit (to Denmark), I learned that the royal family gets its fur from a 'trusted source'. May I ask, who is the supplier?' the 44-year-old wrote.

Actress-turned-animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot is taking aim at the Danish royal family over the slaughter of pilot whales in the country's waters, urging the queen to help end the barbaric practice.

The French film icon has become a champion of animal issues over the last few years, recently campaigning to end bullfighting in Spain and curb seal hunting in Canada.

Now her attention has turned to the killing of pilot whales in the Danish-held Faroe Islands - she is outraged over the annual cull of the marine creatures which sees them driven to shore and killed with knives.

She has now written to Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, urging the royal to step in and end the slaughter.

The Danish royal family held a gala dinner in honour of the visiting Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev yesterday (27.04.10).
