Image
Bille August, the two-time Palme d’Or-winning director, found his creative match with the former Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II, who reinvented herself as a detail-oriented costume designer on his hit Netflix film “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction.”

The film, which took a decade to bring to life, is nominated for three Robert Awards, the Danish equivalent to the Oscars. A playful royal scandal set in the early 19th century, “Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction” was penned by Anders August and based on a 1963 novella by Karen Blixen, the Danish baroness who was played by Meryl Streep in “Out of Africa.” The film revolves around Cazotte, a young portrait painter who considers himself an expert on love matters and is challenged by the Grand Duchess to seduce a young woman, as well as help her secure an heir.

Margrethe II, who just stepped down from her throne citing health reasons,...

Kate Middleton's Subtle "Princess Shuffle" Is Going Viral on TikTok
Image
Image Source: Getty / Oli Scarff

As a part of the royal family, Kate Middleton is no stranger to publicity. But thanks to TikTok, the Princess of Wales is currently garnering buzz for something a little more random: her "Princess Shuffle." Coined by social media users, the term describes a move Middleton made while meeting Queen Margrethe II and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark back in 2022. In a now-viral clip resurfaced by The Royal Watcher TikTok account, Middleton posed for photos with Queen Margrethe, scooting her feet closer in a quick heel-toe motion to get into frame.

Evidently, the movement was just as subtle as it was effective, since no one really noticed Middleton's strategy until now. Some commenters theorized that she might use the shuffle to avoid taking an awkward step that could end up photographed. Others just marveled at her ability to wiggle across the carpet so effortlessly - in heels,...

Ivalu - Jennie Kermode - 18078
Ivalu is missing when the film begins. Her younger sister, Pipaluk, doesn’t know what has happened. Their father doesn’t seem worried. At school, everything is normal. Everyone is talking about an impending visit by the Queen (presumably Margrethe II of Denmark), and how they are going to perform for her in national dress. Do they know what has happened to Ivalu? Are they keeping something from her? Is she keeping something from herself?

Pipaluk’s world is a small one, tucked into a corner of a vast landscape. We journey with her through all the places in and around the small Greenland town where she imagines that her sister might be. Looking to tradition where other clues fail her, she is guided by a crow, but it is her very human experience of these places which comes through strongly, and as she recalls what she and Ivalu did in each of them,...

Why the Queen of Denmark Just Stripped 4 Grandchildren of Their Titles
The Danish Royal House has officially been downsized. Denmark's Queen Margrethe II stripped the titles of four of her eight grandchildren. Now, Prince Joachim's kids—Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10—can no longer be addressed as princes and princesses, or his and her royal highness. "With her decision," began a Sept. 28 statement from the Danish Royal House, "Her Majesty The Queen wishes to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an...

Why Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Stripped Her Grandchildren of Their Royal Titles
Image
Citing her desire to give them more control over their lives, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has relieved four of her grandchildren of their royal titles, the royal palace revealed on Sept. 28.

"With her decision, Her Majesty The Queen wishes to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves," the palace's statement read.

The queen originally bestowed royal titles on all of her grandchildren, per the palace's statement. As of today, Margrethe's second son Joachim's children will no longer be referred to as prince and princess and "his/her highness." This means that Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, whom he shares with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and his children with current wife Princess Marie - Henrik,...

5 Huge Ways Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Wedding Will Differ From Will and Kate’s
Prince Harry
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot in May, there will undoubtedly be parallels to Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s 2011 nuptials. Although they will both be royal weddings watched by millions, there are quite a few differences between the brothers’ big days.

As the future king, William had to adhere to certain protocol for his wedding day, while Harry and Meghan are able to do things a little bit differently (banana cake, anyone?). And just one week after announcing their engagement, the couple is already proving that their nuptials will be all their own.

Here are five...

Watch Out, Meghan Markle! This Little Girl Has Her Eyes on Your Man
Prince Harry
Prince Harry further proved that no one is immune to his royal charm when he kicked off his first official visit to Denmark on Wednesday - and by no one, we mean not even the queen of Denmark. Harry began his two-day trip by visiting Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, where he met with Queen Margrethe, who seemed more than delighted to be in the presence of the handsome young prince as she giggled her way through their entire meeting. Harry then spent his afternoon meeting with kids at the Kph Projects, which is a community of start-ups that aim to improve society via cultural and environmental initiatives. While there, Harry gave an impromptu speech, encouraging children to continue giving back to their communities. Harry later capped off his day by attending a reception at Tivoli Gardens, where he joined several important Danish figures and even tried his hand at speaking Danish.

People Explains: Who Is Prince Henrik, the Danish Royal Who Refuses to Be Buried Next to His Wife the Queen?
Denmark’s Prince Henrik has been making headlines over the past week for his decision not to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe. But who is the man who is controversially taking a decades-old grudge to the grave? Learn a little bit more about him here.

1. He’s pretty bitter about his title.

Outside of his adopted country, Henrik is best known for his long-lasting displeasure with the title he was given in the Danish royal family. Married to Queen Margrethe, he is a prince consort, not a king, as is traditional for men married to female monarchs.

The Reason This Denmark Prince Refuses to Be Buried Next to His Wife Is So Insane
While most of the world is aware that it's 2017 and men and women are f*cking equal, some people still struggle to come to terms with that fact. One such individual happens to be Prince Henrik of Denmark. It was revealed this week that the 83-year-old royal has decided not to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe, when the time comes. A representative for the Danish royal family announced on Friday that despite having a specially designed sarcophagus at Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark just for the couple, Henrik has refused to use that as his final resting place. The reason? He's bitter about the fact that he's never been named king during Margrethe's ascent to the throne, saying that having a lesser title is a form of gender discrimination. "It makes me angry that I am subjected to discrimination," he told French newspaper Le Figaro. "Denmark, which is...

Your Weekly Tiara Treat: Why Princess Marie Chooses This Floral Sparkler for (Almost) Every Occasion
At Denmark's April 13 state dinner for the president of Mexico, Princess Marie chose her favorite accessory: her floral tiara. (She's only ever worn one other since her 2008 wedding to Prince Joachim!) The sparkler, thought to be late-19th or early-20th century, originally belonged to Princess Dagmar, the fourth and youngest daughter of King Frederik VIII of Denmark and Queen Louise of Sweden and Norway. Princess Dagmar married for love, and although her husband Jørgen Castenskjold was of noble birth, their children were deemed to be commoners, denied regal titles and so had no compelling need for expensive courtly jewels.

Tiara Time with a Twist! Princess Mary Turns Her Necklace Into a Jeweled Topper
The award for this week's most creative tiara goes to . . . Denmark's Crown Princess Mary! The royal mom, 44, attended her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe's Arts and Culture Ball on Tuesday in what appeared to be a new topper - but was actually a repurposed rewear. The glittering piece is an unusual piece of jewelry known in Danish as a harpynten. Although the Crown Princess was showing it off as a diadem for the first time, she has worn the piece previously as a necklace - as she did at the celebration of Queen Margrethe's 75th birthday last spring, according to the Danish newspaper Billedbladet.

Dronning Mary
From Swimsuit to Regal Sash! Crown Princess Mary Gets Back to Royal Duty in Denmark
Dronning Mary
New year, still-dazzling regal style. The end of 2015 saw Denmark's Crown Princess Mary, 43, dressed down in her homeland of Australia with her family in a warm-weather swimsuit and T-shirt. (The holiday included a scary moment for Mary's 10-year-old son Prince Christian, who was saved from drowning by a lifeguard who didn't realize his identity.) But the start of 2016 sees the always-stylish Scandinavian royal mom back at work, marking the start of what is traditionally a busy month for the Danish royal family. On Tuesday she supported her mother-in-law Queen Margrethe at the annual Diplomatic Ball, held at Copenhagen's Christiansborg Palace.

Grumpy Prince Henrik 'Retires' from Royal Duty, Denmark Sighs in Relief
Queen Margrethe has finally pronounced a regal nok! (enough!) to the man nicknamed "the world's grumpiest royal" in the British press - her husband, Denmark's Prince Consort Henrik. An official statement recently made on the Queen's behalf by Denmark's Royal Palace confirms that after 40 years service, Henrik, 81, has "decided to retire" and "slow down." "I understand and respect his decision," the Queen, 75, said in her annual New Year's speech before stepping out without him at a reception for the nation's diplomatic corps. The past year has seen a series of embarrassments for the curmudgeonly royal, culminating in the Prince Consort's...

Obama's audience included members of the British royal family, British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Francois Hollande, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, and more. Cine-files: Grand Teatret, Copenhagen
Denmark's leading art house cinema, located in the heart of the capital, celebrates its centenary this year at a time of growing national pride in the country's film industry

This week's Cine-files is another entry from Lorraine Simpson, who runs a monthly film discussion club in Edinburgh.

Location

Denmark's leading art house cinema couldn't get any more central. You'll find it housed behind the Palace Hotel which faces Copenhagen City Hall, just off Stoget, the main pedestrian shopping area. If the imposing doors and smart gold signage are not easy enough to spot then just look for a street filled with movie posters, cafe tables and lots of neatly parked bikes.

The building

This December, Grand Teatret will celebrate the centenary of its inaugural screening. The "grand" part of the theatre's title is due, in part, to the cinema's refined origins – the first screen was built in the ballroom of...

Bardot Writes To Danish Queen Over Pilot Whale Hunts
Brigitte Bardot
Actress-turned-animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot is taking aim at the Danish royal family over the slaughter of pilot whales in the country's waters, urging the queen to help end the barbaric practice.

The French film icon has become a champion of animal issues over the last few years, recently campaigning to end bullfighting in Spain and curb seal hunting in Canada.

Now her attention has turned to the killing of pilot whales in the Danish-held Faroe Islands - she is outraged over the annual cull of the marine creatures which sees them driven to shore and killed with knives.

She has now written to Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, urging the royal to step in and end the slaughter.

Bardot writes, "This macabre spectacle is a shame for Denmark and the Faroe Islands. This is not a hunt but a mass slaughter. (It's an) outmoded tradition that has no acceptable justification in today's world."...
