This '80s Kurt Russell Rom-Com Got A Remake That Flopped With 24% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are a dynamic cinematic duo, having starred in numerous films together. One of their best known collaborations (even if it wasn't warmly received at the time of its release) is 1987's "Overboard." The movie, which only has a 46% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows a carpenter, played by Russell, and a wealthy socialite (Hawn) who suffers from amnesia following an accident. Angry at her for stiffing him out of his money for a job, he then claims to be her husband and brings her back home to work off what she owes.

A man manipulating a woman and having her fall in love with him in the process is ... problematic, even with "Overboard" being based on a true story. After all, the '80s were filled with romantic comedies with troublesome premises. Still, as long as you don't think about it too much, it can still be fun and adorable,...

‘The View’: Eugenio Derbez Slams Deportations, Misconceptions About Latinos (Video)
Image
Acapulco star Eugenio Derbez was the featured guest on Friday’s (July 18) live episode of The View, and the actor talked about his ire over the recent treatment of Latinos in his hometown of Los Angeles. Throughout the summer, the city became the site of much conflict after anti-deportation protests were met with military force by the president, who sent both members of both the National Guard and the U.S. Marines to the city in response to demonstrations. “It’s heartbreaking to see the kids crying when they see they’re taking away their mom or their dad. I just can’t stand it. It’s heartbreaking,” he said of the Ice raids that took place in L.A. and other cities across the country. He later reflected on how the city has been affected by the threat of deportation raids, saying, “The last few weeks, L.A. is like a ghost town.

Eugenio Derbez Says ‘LA Is Like a Ghost Town’ on Weekends Thanks to Mass Deportations
Image
With Ice raids continuing in various cities across the country, “Acapulco” star Eugenio Derbez said on Friday morning that Los Angeles has been severely affected by mass deportations, turning into “a ghost town” on weekends.

Derbez stopped by the “The View” in support of the newest, and final season of his Apple TV+ show, and while talking with the hosts, he lamented how Latinos have been “targeted” in the U.S. Host Ana Navarro was quick to point out that Derbez is an L.A. resident himself, and wondered how the Ice raids have impacted him.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the kids crying when they see they’re taking away their mom, or their dad. I just can’t stand it. It’s heartbreaking,” he said.

When Navarro added that young kids are now stepping into the actual jobs of their parents, such as vending street food, Derbez readily agreed,...

Acapulco Season 4 Review — A Fun Final Season Keeps a Winning Formula Intact
Image
As one of the sleeper hits from Apple TV+, Acapulco looks to conclude its four-season run on a high note. The brilliantly pink hotel is home to an eighties nostalgia fever dream, complete with comedic narration from Eugenio Derbez. Drawing inspiration from How to Be a Latin Lover, the bilingual series has been far more nuanced in its storytelling and fun in its deployment of comedic conventions. While the series has set a nice benchmark for Apple TV+ comedies, the final season proves that more care should be taken in landing the plane. While it’s an enjoyable season, the ending comes far too abruptly.

Acapulco Season 4 Plot

Told across two storylines, the adventures of Máximo Ramos as he attempts to save the Las Colinas Resort. In the 1980s, Máximo (Enrique Arrizon) attempts to balance his new role as Head of Operations with his relationship with Julia (Camila Perez). While...

This 'Toy Story 5' Actor's Critically Panned 2018 Comedy Remake Is a Surprise Streaming Success
Image
Known to many as the face of the Scary Movie franchise, Anna Faris has had a wonderful career, mostly within the realm of comedy. From The Hot Chick to recently being reported as part of the voice cast of the upcoming Toy Story 5, Faris has a filmography packed with highlights. One of her more forgotten efforts, however, came in the 2018 romantic comedy Overboard, which she starred in alongside Eva Longoria, Eugenio Derbez, John Hannah, Swoosie Kurtz, and Mel Rodriguez.

Released to little fanfare, the film failed to capture the hearts and minds of critics and audiences, as evidenced by a disappointing 24% from critics and 54% from general audiences on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Written by Leslie Dixon, Bob Fisher, and Rob Greenberg, with the latter also directing the movie, which stands as his only directorial effort to date, Overboard follows working-class single mother Kate's (Faris) frustration at being fired by a selfish yacht owner,...

Image
Amidst changing streaming strategies, Apple TV+ has decided to cancel 4 original shows in the year 2025. The decision comes after careful calculation about what the channel wants to air. The rise in production casts, evolving viewer tendencies, and the growing competition have led to Apple TV+ making these tough choices.

They have had to reassess their slate to keep in the running, only the shows and movies that truly represent what the channel stands for. Why is Apple TV+ saying goodbye to these original shows?

The decision to cancel as many as 4 series so far, in 2025, shows the strategic changing direction for Apple TV+. The network is under a lot of pressure to justify its production investments in terms of measurable success,...

Say Goodbye to Another TV Family as NBC Cancels Fan-Favorite Sitcom After 3 Seasons
Image
George Lopez’s latest sitcom, Lopez vs. Lopez, will not be getting a fourth season. The fan-favorite show was canceled at NBC, per Deadline, and is the latest sitcom to get the axe this year. ABC’s The Connersalso ended its run this spring.

The news of Lopez vs. Lopez’s cancelation came at NBC’s network upfronts, which also included an announcement that Night Court is also not being renewed. Both shows had been on the “bubble” at the network. The sitcom, starring George Lopez, Mayan Lopez, Matt Shively, Bruce Gonzalez, Selenis Leyva, and Al Madrigal had the distinction of being one of the first network comedies that featured a Latino family as a dysfunctional one, a-la Roseanne.

The similarities between Roseanne, The Conners, and Lopez vs. Lopez were likely not coincidental, as Bruce Helford, who helmed the two classic sitcoms, also served as an executive producer on Lopez vs.

Philippe Tlokinski in Adventures of a Mathematician (2020)
With the 2025 Sloan Film Summit just around the corner, we want to look back at some of our favorite films that have been supported in the past by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. These films are dramas, science fictions, biopics and big budget blockbusters. Yes, they all have science, math, technology, economics or engineering at their core, and this list goes to show just how much storytelling juice you can get out of those topics.

The films on this list show how universal stories about the sciences can be. We all care about nature, we all look up at the stars and wonder and we all love solving a good puzzle. And that’s what the sciences are all about. Both art and science help you understand the world better, just in different ways, and these films prove what you can do when they come together.

Mexico Marks First Blockbuster of the Year With Wedding Rom-Com ‘Mesa de Regalos’ From the Mediapro Studio and Pampa Films
Image
Mexico has had its first – and hopefully not its last – blockbuster of the year with wedding romcom ‘Mesa de Regalos’ (roughly translated to Wedding Gift Table or Wedding Registry) with more than 1.7 million admissions, far surpassing other Mexican titles this year by over a million.

Produced by Spain’s The Mediapro Studio and Buenos Aires-based Pampa Films, its box office success is welcome news for Mexico’s film industry, which continues to see a slump in post-pandemic theatrical admissions, despite some gains.

According to the latest report from Canacine, the Mexican Film Industry’s Chamber of Commerce, theatrical admissions grew 33% in 2023 compared to the previous year but still lagged 32.30% behind its pre-Covid benchmark of 2019. The phenomenon is worldwide given the inexorable rise of streaming platforms, changing consumer habits and other factors.

Ranking second after “Captain America Brave New World” (posting $6.5 million) in the week of Feb. 10-16, “Mesa de Regalos...

Beyond Bad Tweets, Latinos Would Like a Word with ‘Emilia Pérez’ — Opinion
Image
Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón’s recently resurfaced tweets — including one that posited Adolf Hitler “simply had his opinion of the Jews” — have put the 13 Oscar nominations for French narco musical “Emilia Pérez” in turmoil. The fallout is reverberating across Hollywood: Celebrities are distancing themselves, while some online detractors are even calling on the Academy to rescind her nomination.

There’s no joy in being right here, but: We told you so. Latinos knew that “Emilia Pérez” — a film in which a cartel kingpin reemerges as a women’s rights activist — was a disaster waiting to happen. The debacle raises serious questions beyond Netflix vetting Gascón’s Twitter account.

Namely, why did an industry that relies so heavily on Hispanics — who buy more movie tickets per capita than anyone — embrace a film that the very people who keep its lights on widely rejected? More troubling, why were Latino objections ignored?...
