Zooey Deschanel Starred In A Star-Studded Wizard Of Oz Miniseries That Everyone Forgot About
Image
Frank Baum's 1900 children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" has had an incredible life well beyond its original intent. First, there was a Broadway musical adaptation in 1902, and then in 1939, it was adapted into the film "The Wizard of Oz" starring Judy Garland. Since then, there have been numerous excellent and unique reinterpretations of Baum's story, ranging from 1978's "The Wiz" (a movie musical featuring an all-Black cast) to the wildly successful "Wicked" franchise based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, which has since given rise to a major musical film version starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jeff Goldblum. "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is wildly adaptable because of its rather simple plot structure and hugely recognizable elements, and since it's been in the public domain since 1956, people have had a lot of time to create their own visions of this classic fantasy adventure.

Indeed, there have...

500 Days of Summer Foreshadows The Summer I Turned Pretty in One Way
Image
500 Days of Summer is one of the most iconic rom-coms ever created, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. But little do people know that the cult classic foreshadows Amazon Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty. Given how Tom and Summer in the film started out as ‘just friends’ which soon turned into a casual friends-with-benefits situation with no strings attached, the same is how Taylor (Rain Spencer) and Steven’s (Sean Kaufman) relationship turned out to be.

Moreover, in both the film and the series, the relationship becomes more passionate before the cracks begin to appear. In 500 Days of Summer, Tom and Summer part ways, realizing they are not good for each other. The same seems to be unfolding in The Summer I Turned Pretty for Taylor and Steven, although Taylor is trying to get him back despite Steven rejecting her.

This parallel becomes intentionally ironic once noticed.

Cameron Crowe’s beloved coming-of-age rock drama Almost Famous has officially landed on Pluto TV this August — and if you’ve never seen it, or it’s been a while since your last tour with Stillwater, there’s no better time to hop on the bus. Released in 2000, Almost Famous is widely regarded as one of the greatest music films ever made. Based on Crowe’s own teenage years as a journalist for Rolling Stone, the movie follows 15-year-old William Miller (played by a wide-eyed Patrick Fugit) as he gets the assignment of a lifetime: to hit the road with a rising rock band in the early 1970s and write about it. The result is a brilliantly heartfelt, hilarious, and regularly heartbreaking look at fame, fandom, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.

Crowe, who won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, based the story on his real-life experiences touring...

Can You Recognize Zooey Deschanel Without Her Bangs and Glasses?
Image
Zooey Deschanel is one of the most stunning actresses in Hollywood, so it’s only understandable how she’s the talk of the town every now and then. But the reason she’s currently making rounds on the internet is that she looks pretty much unrecognizable.

Allow us to walk you through it: You must be used to seeing the actress in bangs and glasses, a look that is particularly associated with her role as Jess in New Girl. Now imagine her without those very bangs and glasses that you’re so used to seeing her in — that’s exactly where she became unrecognizable.

As of late, images of Deschanel — one in her bangs and glasses and the other without them, featuring her in a different hairstyle altogether — have been going viral on the internet. And, since then, fans have been finding it hard to recognize the actress and believe...

The Bear's Abby Elliott remembers 'looming threat' that hung over her SNL years
Image
It's no secret that working at Saturday Night Live means trying to be creative in perhaps the most high-pressure environment in television. For some cast members, that pressure can be very motivating. But for The Bear's Abby Elliott, it felt more like a threat.

Elliott joined Saturday Night Live during season 34, making history as the child of a former SNL cast member. Her father, Chris Elliott, spent one season on the show in season 20. Her tenure on the show was marked by a string of celebrity impressions, including Angelina Jolie, Katy Perry, Khloe Kardashian, and Zooey Deschanel.

But the dream job on SNL could feel much more like a nightmare for Elliott. Things can get a little cut-throat at the show as performers compete to get their material on air or find a way to become a favorite of the writers.

“Every week was a new week, and your...

Matthew McConaughey’s 23% Rotten Tomatoes Rom-Com With ‘Matlock’ and Marvel Stars Returns to Streaming
Image
Matthew McConaugheyused to be a rom-com legend before he was Coop in Interstellar. He made movies with leading ladies like Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and one of his most underrated rom-com adventures is Failure to Launch. McConaughey plays Tripp, a man in his 30s, who lives with his parents despite being a ladies' man, and his parents (played by Kathy Batesand Terry Bradshaw) hire Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) to get him out of their home.

It isn't the best romantic comedy of all time, but the movie is genuinely funny. But with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 23%, you'd think that it was responsible for the death of someone's mother. Yes, you have to experience a naked Bradshaw while watching the movie, but it does have an all-star cast. Alongside McConaughey and Parker are Bradley Cooper, Zooey Deschanel, and Justin Bartha as Tripp and Paula's friends,...

The Bear Season 4: Every New And Returning Cameo
Image
Note: while we make sure not to give away major plot points here, the very nature of this article requires a spoiler warning for season four of "The Bear."

Ever since its second season, "The Bear" — the Emmy-winning comedy that's a co-production between FX and Hulu — has made a habit of bringing on huge, high-profile guest stars to pop up from time to time. Honestly, on many levels, it makes sense to bring in big actors to show up occasionally on "The Bear." Because the main focus is centered around the titular sandwich shop turned fine dining destination in Chicago — run by Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), his "cousin" Richie Jermovitch (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), Carmy's right-hand woman Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri), and a handful of their friends — it's easy enough to bring in a few Oscar winners to play fellow chefs (which Olivia Colman did in seasons 2 and 3) or a...

3 Years Ago, Kim Kardashian Asked the 4th of July to be Canceled: Real Reason Explained
Image
All of America—and basically the entire world—knows how important the Fourth of July is for the country: It’s Independence Day, and it commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. However, reality TV star Kim Kardashian holds a grudge against it.

Around three years ago, the media personality, socialite, and businesswoman all in one, really stood up to ask the Fourth of July to be canceled. But she wasn’t the only major personality to have done that, as numerous other celebrities also joined her in standing for the motion. But, of course, it wasn’t without a very valid reason.

20 Years After Its Release, This Cult Sci-fi Comedy Is Hyper-Jumping to a New Streaming Platform
Image
Every once in a while, there comes a movie whose concept is so wild that you have to see it to believe it. 20 years ago, a sci-fi comedy called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy debuted in theaters, and it provided a different approach to stories that take place outside planet Earth. If you've either never watched it or completely forgotten about it, you will be glad to know that the Infinite Improbability Drive is directing the movie to Hulu on July 1.

The characters of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are enough of a reason for you to want to check it out: Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus) plays a two-headed, three-armed alien who just wants to have fun in the middle of chaos. The late Alan Rickman (Harry Potter film series) voiced a depressed robot, and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy) plays a grumpy British guy who is...

Actors You Didn't Realize Were In Frasier
Image
Kelsey Grammer has inhabited Dr. Frasier Crane on television for over 40 years (though not consecutively). Starting with his first appearance on "Cheers" in 1984, the acclaimed actor has taken the beloved psychiatrist from the friendly bar in Boston where everyone knows your name to his hometown of Seattle for a long-running spinoff and back to Boston for a short-lived (but hopefully extended) stint as a Harvard professor. He even stopped by Nantucket for an Emmy-nominated appearance at the tight-knit commuter airport on "Wings."

In all those years as Dr. Crane, Grammer has acted alongside a number of incredible guest stars. In fact, he encountered multiple in a single episode of "Frasier" since many prominent performers and personalities appeared as callers on the good doctor's popular radio show. Iconic "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve, rock music icon Eddie Van Halen, sitcom royalty Mary Tyler Moore, and prolific director Penny Marshall were just a...

10 Best TV Crossovers Ever, Ranked
Image
There are few things network execs enjoy more than crossover episodes, especially now that franchises like Law & Order and One Chicago have taken over broadcast TV. Just this past TV season, ABC saw a couple surprising crossovers: 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey, and Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Whereas some crossovers come off as blatant ratings grabs — and some seem slipshod in their execution — the following exemplars excelled through their ambition, humor, or narrative significance. Some crossovers told epic tales across several episodes, others were just one-episode masterpieces, and yet others delighted us with cameos. Here are our favorite TV crossovers. 10. Brooklyn Nine-Nine & New Girl New Girl’s Jess (Zooey Deschanel) didn’t have the easiest time in New York — or, rather, a New York-styled Hollywood backlot — especially when Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake (Andy Samberg) commandeered and crashed her car. The New Girl Character You Likely Forgot Reacher's Alan Ritchson Played
Image
I don't care what anybody says, the first two seasons of Elizabeth Meriwether's "New Girl" should be in the pantheon of the funniest sitcoms about roommates. I never thought the concept of three (and at times four) weirdo dudes living with a silly-girly chick could be as hilarious and bonkers as seen in Fox's TV series. It's a shame the show couldn't maintain that initial freshness and goofiness throughout its 7-season run, eventually turning into an insufferable, painfully unfunny, and mawkish mess in its last three seasons — at least for me, and I was a huge fan!

But seasons 3 and 4 are still plenty of fun — even if not on the same level as the previous two — and have their amusing highlights I can never get tired of. One of those is season 4's fourth episode, "Micro," which brings us to the very reason you clicked on this article.

Apple TV+ is still relatively new in the streaming industry, and despite having made a name for themselves by producing quality content that people talk about to no end, the Apple-owned streaming service has produced some shows that don’t get talked about much, but not because they are bad, but because they are overlooked. ‘The Simpsons’ Parody of ‘Smiling Friends’ Isn’t Going Over Well With Fans
Image
In this week’s season finale of The Simpsons, Bart and Lisa’s interest in The Itchy & Scratchy Show begins to wane, prompting them to seek out other potential TV replacements. Lisa gets really into Quirk Girl, a not-so-subtle New Girl spoof that actually features the voices of stars Max Greenfield and Zooey Deschanel, who “made it okay for cute girls to be pretty.”

Bart, on the other hand, is watching a new animated series called Screaming Friends, which is full of gratingly loud oddball cartoon characters. “The jokes are great, but what I love is the storytelling,” Bart tells Marge.

Screaming Friends is clearly a parody of Smiling Friends, the beloved, and intensely bizarre Adult Swim series. But fans of the show aren’t exactly thrilled about the apparently uncomplimentary send-up.

Most of the complaints seemed to suggest that the overly-simplistic pseudo-reference was an example of the show being out-of-touch,...

‘New Girl’ Stars Reunite on This Weekend’s ‘The Simpsons’
Image
Beloved Fox sitcom New Girl is getting a belated spoof from one of its network brethren, and two of the show's stars are along for the ride. Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield will lend their voices to this week's episode of The Simpsons. "Estranger Things," the thirty-sixth season finale of the undying animated series, will air this Sunday night on Fox and stream on Hulu the next day. Entertainment Weekly has a first look at Deschanel and Greenfield's appearances on the series.

In the clip, Lisa (Yeardley Smith) is watching the sitcom Quirk Girl on her tablet; she describes it as being "from the golden age of television: 2013." A thinly-veiled parody of New Girl, it stars a Deschanel lookalike who, Lisa gushes, "made it okay for cute girls to be pretty." Greenfield voices her roommate, the slick ladies' man Schultz, who's just borrowed a dog to help him pick up women.

Looking for great rom-com movies? Here’s the streamer that should be first on your list
Image
From ‘Say Anything’ to ‘Palm Springs,’ Hulu nail every era of the rom-com.

Rom-coms are my favorite genre because when they really work, they deliver one of the best story experiences. Put simply, they both make me laugh and move me emotionally. Now, I’m not talking about the made-for-tv kind with generic meet-cutes and soft lighting, but the real deal: big-screen, laugh-out-loud, emotionally layered stories that actually stick with you.

So I started digging across the streamers, looking for the good ones. And while it’s obviously subjective, the best collection I found was on Hulu. Not the most rom-coms, but the right ones for me — a killer mix of 2000s nostalgia, indie hits, and buzzy modern entries that all hit that sweet spot. Here’s why Hulu is the best streamer for rom-com lovers who want quality, not quantity.

Everything you need to know about the best streamer for rom-com movies.

New Girl Stars Reunite to Spoof Their Own Sitcom in The Simpsons Season 36 Finale Sneak Peek
Image
Jess and Schmidt from New Girl are reuniting - kind of. For seven seasons, Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield played Jess Day and Schmidt on the Emmy-nominated Fox series New Girl. To say that Jess’s character was quirky may be an understatement. The show begins with a newly dumped Jess, a young teacher, moving into a loft with three guys, and antics ensue. New Girl ran for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018.

Now, Deschanel and Greenfield (The Neighborhood) are essentially reprising their New Girl roles, but with a twist, in the Season 36 finale of The Simpsons, airing on May 18. Per Entertainment Weekly, Deschanel and Greenfield are parodying their characters in the episode. A clip of the scene can be watched below.

Peyton Reed’s 2008 Romantic Comedy Paired Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, But It Was Very Cringe
Image
Growing up, Jim Carrey was The guy—king of rubber-faced chaos, delivering punchlines with the energy of a Red Bull-fueled cartoon. I was obsessed. I watched The Mask before a school exam once and spent the whole week annoying everyone by reenacting it.

Whether it was the wild antics of Ace Ventura, the idiotic brilliance of Dumb and Dumber, or the raw heart in Eternal Sunshine, Carrey could do no wrong. So when I recently rewatched Yes Man, ice cream in hand, expecting feel-good vibes.

Yeah, big mistake. The age gap? The zero-spark romance? It was giving cringe. Let’s unpack this misfire.

'Thunderbolts*' Director Addresses Why Baron Zemo Does Not Appear in the Movie
Image
Thunderbolts*director Jake Schreier finally has addressed why one founding member of the Thunderbolts team in the comics is not present in the MCU film. At D23 in 2022, Marvel Studios officially confirmed the lineup for the Thunderbolts team, which consisted of characters present in the film who had been introduced in projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and even Ant-Man and the Wasp. Yet one name was notably absent, Baron Helmut Zemo, played by Daniel Brühl. Zemo is the founding member of The Thunderbolts in the comics, who originally were a team of villains passing as heroes to the general public.

Speaking with Dexerto, director Jake Schreier acknowledged fans' disappointment that Baron Zemo is not on the Thunderbolts* roster. Despite The Falcon and the Winter Soldier characters Bucky Barnes / The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and John Walker / U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) returning, it appears that even early on in development,...

How Much Would Jess's Apartment In New Girl Cost?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

We're a few years removed from its ending, but "New Girl" had a very healthy run on Fox, airing seven seasons from 2011 to 2018. The vast majority of those 146 episodes centered on Zooey Deschanel's hijinks as Jess in her loft apartment in Los Angeles alongside her roommates, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfiled), and Winston (Lamorne Morris).

The apartment in question is, in some ways, the typical sitcom apartment, much like the ones from "Friends," in that it seems far too expensive for the characters to actually afford. But this is television, after all, and it doesn't have to obey the laws of reality. Still, for fans of the show, it's probably worth wondering how much Jess and the gang would have had to pay to actually live in that apartment. Los Angeles is famously one of the most expensive cities in the U.

Walton Goggins
Dreamin’ Wild review – Walton Goggins and Casey Affleck are rediscovered 70s rockers in late-life fame drama
Walton Goggins
Goggins and Affleck play Donnie and Joe Emerson, whose album wins acclaim decades after it was made, but it’s rather a mono film

Newcomer-fans of Walton Goggins, sharing gifs of his stunned expression in The White Lotus, might want a look at this interesting but flawed movie: a heartfelt but frustratingly ponderous true-life story from the music world in which Goggins stars with Casey Affleck. Donnie and Joe Emerson were two brothers from Washington State who self-recorded an album in their teen years in 1978 called Dreamin’ Wild; it bombed, leaving crippling debts for their poor dad (played by Beau Bridges), who’d taken out bank loans to build them a log-cabin recording studio – but the record is then rediscovered 30 years later by vinyl hipster connoisseurs who can hardly believe the Emerson boys’ untutored rock genius.

The film insightfully shows how this deferred fame is not all good news; it...

Emily Deschanel's Sister Zooey Guest Starred In One Of The Best Bones Episodes
Image
For a show that featured a lot of death, "Bones" sure did have a lot of heart. A series doesn't run for 12 seasons without an effective emotional core, after all, and "Bones" certainly managed to maintain a soft spot, even as Emily Deschanel's Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz's Agent Seeley Booth inspected some of the most horrific corpses you've ever seen on TV.

One nice behind-the-scenes aspect of the series to offset the ongoing corpse inspections was the fact that the "Bones" cast often included family members of the stars and the show's creator, Hart Hanson. David Boreanaz's father, Dave Roberts, appeared in an uncredited cameo as an FBI agent, while Hanson's own father, Paul, showed up as a vending machine repairman. But it was during one Christmas episode that we got perhaps the most notable family-member appearance in the series.

Yes, even "Bones," with fake cadavers...

And in the aftermath of her relocation, it was the unexpected events and the roommates/dysfunctional family dynamics that turned the sitcom into a major hit.

But sadly, as the revival is yet to happen, let’s take a look at the main cast of New Girl, and what...

Alan Ritchson Details The Fascinating Way He Got Cast In New Girl
Image
Alan Ritchson tells the amusing story of how he scored a role onNew Girlas a man with a micro-penis. The Reacher star is as huge as can be right now, both in terms of physical bulk, and when it comes to his acting career. But there was a time before Ritchson was quite so big, when he was willing to take on just about any job, including a small part in a sitcom playing a man with an unfortunate condition.

Ritchson’s New Girl season 4 guest spot as Jess’s poorly-endowed paramour gave the future action hero a memorable early-ish role, and as it happens, the story behind how he got the role is itself memorable, as he recalled during a recent appearance. Ritchson begins his story by recounting the time he was trying his hand as a screenwriter and needed a nocturnal pick-me-up (via Wired):
