Finding Faith Review: Same Sermon, Same Song — A Retreaded Path of Predictability
Image
Lifetime’s first faith-based slate finally concludes.

And it ends with the aptly titled Finding Faith. It was fine.

The film feels exactly like what you’d expect from a traditional African-American faith-based film or play, right down to the power players and familiar figures who star in it.

(Lifetime/Screenshot)

There is nothing wrong with that at all. It’s especially appealing for those in Lifetime’s mainstream audience who may never have experienced these types of films.

But as someone who has grown up and watched them my entire life, there was nothing particularly new, compelling, or memorable about it.

Somewhere around the time of the dramatic accident and disturbing death of Jaylen Williams, played by Demetrius Grosse, I wasn’t gripped by the story.

Jessie Maple Estate Talk ‘Will’ 4K Release & How The Filmmaker’s Independent Harlem Cinema Launched The Work Of Directors Like Spike Lee & Carlos Diegues
Image
Jessie Maple began work on Will, a spirited tale about addiction and community ties in contemporary Harlem, in the late ‘70s. The project was completed in 1981 and is widely recognized as the first independent feature written, directed, and produced by a Black American woman. Last Friday, some four decades later, Maple’s debut film received its first full theatrical release via Janus Films.

Janus opened a 4K restoration of the film at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

A true landmark of independent American cinema, Will was shot on location in Harlem with a budget no greater than $12,000. Obaka Adedunyo stars in the film as a former All-American basketball star who has fallen from grace due to drugs. With the support of his wife, Loretta Devine, making her screen debut, Will (Adedunyo) finds a renewed sense of purpose in the community while mentoring a streetwise 12-year-old named Brother (Robert Dean) and...

Will (1981): What Is Its Cast Doing Right Now in Hollywood?
Image
Sometimes the hardest battles are fought in silence, and nowhere is that truer than in Jessie Maple’s 1981 drama Will. This film didn’t just put a spotlight on heroin addiction; it shone a glaring beam on the raw grit and complexity of a man clawing his way back from the abyss, all while navigating the delicate ecosystem of family and community.

Watching Obaka Adedunyo’s portrayal of Will, a former basketball star wrestling with withdrawal and personal demons, reminds me that “the toughest climbs reveal the strongest souls.”

It’s not just a film about addiction; it’s a portrait of resilience, hope, and the wrenching tension between self-reliance and reaching out for help. Loretta Devine’s debut as Jean, Will’s wife, grounds the story with warmth and realism. Years later, seeing where these actors landed in Hollywood feels like witnessing the echo of that original fight, the struggle to be seen,...

True Colours: 10 Great Female Character Actors Who Elevate Performance Art
Image
10 Great Female Character Actors Who Elevate Performance Art: In the endless sea of performance art, there are those who craft their characterisations with zeal, expressionistic accuracy inculcating the most intimate and often grandest gestures in vital arcs while also plumbing the sheer, unadorned interiority of the emotional journey that defines lives. The stakes are high when they work in a predominantly male-oriented culture that revolves around machismo and gendered expectations. But these female actors are secure in the vitality of their craft and come with individual self-definition to boot, with their characters.

Character actors elevate work to an art form. They hardly court the same media mileage as veritable superstars yet construct the bulwark of any screenplay, earning every bit of respect and credibility by becoming vessels of the human experience. The female representation here is proof. In this painstaking process, they discard superficial markers of the industry and hence...

Cult classic 1998 horror movie to get a modern-day remake about digital terrors
Image
In the era of remakes and reboots, we've gotten a lot of news about horror movies and their potential revivals. The cult classic and underrated gem Urban Legend is the next in line for a reboot. The 1998 slasher film was buried underneath the success of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, which have also been remade and rebooted.

What we know so far about the Urban Legend reboot

Gary Dauberman is set to produce after working on other horror films such as 2025's Until Dawn, 2017's It, as well as multiple movies in The Conjuring Universe. Alongside Dauberman is Neal Moritz, who produced the original Urban Legend and also I Know What You Did Last Summer. He is reportedly in discussions to potentially produce as well. Shanrah Wakefield, known for a few Lifetime movies, is writing the script. Additionally, Screen Gems is behind this new take.

Urban Legend Reboot In Development From Writer Shanrah Wakefield And Until Dawn Producer Gary Dauberman
Image
The massive box office success of the recent Scream movies led to an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel (check out the first trailer here), and we now have word that another '90s slasher movie is set for the revival treatment, with Screen Gems in the process of developing a new Urban Legends movie.

THR reports that writer/actress Shanrah Wakefield (Wrong Swipe) has been hired to pen the script, with Gary Dauberman, whose video game adaptation Until Dawn opens this weekend, on board as a producer via his Coin Operated banner. Neal Moritz, who was one of the producers of the original, is also in negotiations to produce.

Directed by Jamie Blanks and written by Sylvio Horta, the original '90s slasher was set in a New England university and focused on a killer whose murders were inspired by popular urban legends. Jared Leto, Alicia Witt,...

'Urban Legends' Is Getting a Reboot From 'Until Dawn' and 'It' Writer
Image
Did you ever hear the one about Hollywood consistently banking on sequels, requels, reboots and familiar IP to bring in box office dollars? It's not exactly folklore since it's something very well-known and very true, but it is the appropriate way to drop news that a slasher film from the late '90s teen horror movie boom is making a comeback. Urban Legend was released in the wake of the success of 1996's Scream and now another take will follow in that franchise's successful footsteps in hopes of striking gold once again.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of 1998's Urban Legend is in early development at Sony Screen Gems, with Shanrah Wakefield being tasked to tackle the screenplay. Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote the Until Dawn video game adaptation that is opening this Friday, will produce through his Coin Operated banner. Meanwhile Neal H. Moritz, who produced the 1998 film, is...

Urban Legend reboot coming from producer Gary Dauberman
Brittany Allen and Hannah Emily Anderson in What Keeps You Alive (2018)
Five years ago, it was announced that Screen Gems had hired What Keeps You Alive writer/director Colin Minihan to take the helm of a reboot of the 1998 slasher Urban Legend, the idea being to create “an iconic new slasher for the digital age in a world where internet urban legends are born and move at a terrifying pace.” Minihan’s reboot got far enough into development that Sydney Chandler and Katherine McNamara were in talks to star in the film… but then, it all fell apart. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Screen Gems is going to give this Urban Legend reboot idea another try, bringing in genre regular Gary Dauberman to produce the film under his Coin Operated banner. Neal H. Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is in talks to produce as well, while Shanrah Wakefield has been hired to write the screenplay.

Sheryl Lee Ralph on Almost Starring in ‘Ghosts’ Instead of ‘Abbott Elementary’ and the Racism She Faced in Her Theater Career
Image
There are two ways to earn your spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to Sheryl Lee Ralph.

“If I have the honor of a star, anybody can — if it’s something you’re really willing to put the work in for or if you have a sugar daddy or a sugar mama who just wants to give it to you. But —” the newest inductee pauses for laughter, always one for theatrics, “it probably won’t be that. More than likely, you’re going to have to do some work.”

Thankfully, she has a playbook for that too. Ralph is now best known for her Emmy-winning role as Barbara Howard in the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” produced by Warner Bros. Television. But she first stepped onto the famed lot nearly 50 years ago, auditioning to play a different Barbara H. in what she hoped would be her first professional acting...

Eric Kripke On Supernatural: I Created Bobby Singer Because The Original Actress “Wasn’t Available”
Image
Supernatural played a major role in redefining the fantasy genre. With its brilliant blend of horror and high-stakes family drama, the show quickly gained a huge fan following. Over the course of 15 years and 15 seasons, it became a cultural phenomenon, setting the standard for other shows that followed.

At the core of Supernatural’s success was Eric Kripke, whose remarkable storytelling gave the audience something to wait for every week. But just like any great creative journey, there were moments of improvisation in Supernatural as well that turned out perfectly for the show. One of these moments was the creation of Bobby Singer.

Originally, Kripke wanted to bring back Missouri Mosley. But when the actress who played her declined the offer due to scheduling conflicts, Kripke created the gruff, whiskey-loving hunter Bobby Singer.

Why Joshua Jackson Is ‘Waging a One-Man War’ for a Broadway Episode of ‘Doctor Odyssey’
Image
Joshua Jackson is “waging a one-man war” to greenlight a Broadway-themed episode for his hit ABC series “Doctor Odyssey.”

It’s not that Jackson, who executive produces and stars as Dr. Max Bankman, is particularly eager to sing — though he says coming up with little ditties has helped him learn the show’s complex medical jargon. Jackson is not really excited about dancing either: he and co-star Sean Teale (who plays nurse Tristan Silva) laugh, bemused, when the conversation during a special FYC screening of the show in Los Angeles turns to their dance-off (set to “Despacito”) in the pilot episode.

“We didn’t do a lot of dancing after that,” Jackson said, laughing. “I think they saw the dailies of me dancing and they thought, ‘That’s enough of that.’”

So why is Jackson so passionate about a Broadway episode? His reasoning: if you cast a veteran of the...

Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum Is the Best Part of This Failed Horror Film (& You Can Watch It for Free)
Image
Michael Rosenbaum gained his cult following by playing Lex Luthor in Smallville, but he already proved he could play the villain in Urban Legend. Rosenbaum was just as impudent in that film, which made his character’s death scene so satisfying.

Tubi is streaming Urban Legend for free this January. Launched at the peak of the 90s slasher trend, the film was criticized for its glaring similarities to Scream. Urban Legend was a commercial hit (earning $72.5 million against its $14 million budget), but it remains one of 1998’s worst-rated horror movies. Released that same year, Disturbing Behavior, The Faculty, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer were similarly panned by audiences and critics. However, these films fueled the careers of budding stars Katie Holmes, Elijah Wood, and Jennifer Love Hewitt; Smallville fans also look to Urban Legend as a highlight of Michael Rosenbaum’s career.

What is pica? (Is the Doctor Odyssey disorder real?)
Image
There are some rare and odd disorders out there. Doctor Odyssey brought one up that a selection of the population will likely have heard about all thanks to pregnancy cravings. It’s all about pica!

During the Doctor Odyssey season 1 fall finale, Max and Avery had to perform emergency surgery on the organizer of the Quackers. The Quackers are people who like to hide and hunt for rubber ducks. It’s just a bit of fun in a dark and twisted world, but things took a turn with the need for emergency surgery.

It turned out that the male organizer has pica. We would later find out that his wife, played by the amazing Loretta Devine, had an idea of this disorder knowing that he would eat paper. Of course, it has led to the question about what pica is.

The Doctor Odyssey diagnosis is a very real disorder

Avery gets some unexpected news in Doctor Odyssey season 1, episode 8

The Doctor Odyssey season 1 fall finale promises not to disappoint. Let’s take a look inside the episode.

Doctor Odyssey season 1, episode 8 promises us bombshells and emergency surgeries. Of course, there are some very tropey storylines for a rather tropey show. They’re sure to add some drama and excitement, though.

Avery is pregnant in Doctor Odyssey season 1, episode 8

After that wild night a couple of episodes ago, Avery has some rather surprising news. She’s pregnant. Of course, she has no idea who the father is. At least telling the two men that she has slept with both of them won’t come as a surprise. They were both there when it happened. The question is which one the father is.

Will we see something like Boston Legal where the two men battled it out? Brad and Jeffrey were both willing to step up when they found out Denise was pregnant.

You’ve got Chrismukkah crises, secret beaus, bossy grandmothers, even a high-school mean girl making her former classmate miserable by becoming part of her family… and a possibly problematic forecast that seems set to bring all of these folks together. The project is an inspired idea that quite frankly,...

10 Obscure Cult Classic Horrors That Everyone Forgot About
Image
The horror genre has always been a big source of entertainment in film. It has the power to dominate the box office, with revenue streams of up to almost a billion dollars. Sometimes, however, certain films come and go before being given a real chance at exposure. This could be caused by clashing with another release similar to itself. It could boil down to the content of the film as well, where the story was too silly and obscure.

For the horror genre, many factors can cause films to become a little obscure and disappear. Whether or not a horror film gets forgotten, some manage to retain a cult following.

What Happens in Vegas: THR’s Hot List of the Buzziest Movies at AFM
Image
Producers and distributors heading to Las Vegas for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Nov. 5-10, are betting big that indie action is primed for a comeback.

The AFM was built on action movies — the leading independent film bazaar launched in 1981 at the start of a decade defined by the cinematic stylings of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. But in recent markets, with the headline-grabbing success of breakouts like Neon’s Longlegs and Cineverse’s Terrifier 3, action has taken a backseat to horror.

There will be scares-a-plenty at AFM 2024, but many of the market’s buzziest projects sit squarely in the action space. Even a few that don’t star Liam Neeson, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham or Nic Cage. How buyers respond to this new generation of would-be action stars — Daisy Ridley, Amber Midthunder, Alan Ritchson — will determine who...

‘Lost & Found in Cleveland’ Review: Antique Appraisals Rile Up Midwest Cuckoos in a Middling Ensemble Comedy of One-Note Characters
Image
Though it’s something of a backhanded paean to its eponymous city in question, the most enjoyable element to “Lost & Found in Cleveland” is its locations, locations, locations — cinematographer Davon Slininger’s widescreen images provide an appealing selective tour of a burg the film presents as quaintly lagging well behind the times. Otherwise, this slick if uninspired first feature for actors turned writer-directors Marisa Guterman and Keith Gerchak offers a pleasant-enough ensemble seriocomedy that straddles the terrains of Richard Curtis and Christopher Guest, without approaching either’s high points. The Newport Beach Fest world premiere’s familiar faces and story beats seem best suited to home viewing.

An opening montage to the retro pop of Bobby Darin singing “Artificial Flowers” — an incongruously brassy, “Mack the Knife”-like arrangement of a depressing slum-tragedy lyric from 1960 Broadway musical “Tenderloin” — introduces the characters, as well as a sense that this midwestern metropolis’ growth stalled some decades ago.

Garcelle Beauvais Says Lifetime Film ‘Tempted by Love’ Won’t ‘Shy Away’ From Aging’s Realities: ‘That’s What Real Women Go Through’
Garcelle Beauvais
Garcelle Beauvais said her May-December romance film “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love” won’t avoid any of the realities that come with women and aging, noting that menopause and body aches are part of the natural process of getting older.

“When [Terry McMillan and I] were collaborating on ‘Tempted by Love,’ I really wanted it to come from a real place,” Beauvais told TheWrap. “At first we’re like, ‘Is it too much to do the arthritis? Is it too much to do the menopause?’ But we’re like, ‘But that’s what real women go through.’ So why would we shy away from that?”

The film, which stars and is executive produced by Beauvais, follows the journey of world-renowned chef Ava, who has been living in Europe but rushes home to care for her elderly aunt in South Carolina after she suffers from a fall. She’s then...

This Is 'Grey's Anatomy's Most Devastating Romance
Image
While Greys Anatomy is first and foremost a medical drama, it has also made a name for itself as a romance series, and a wildly dramatic one at that. It seems that while patients are going through medical crises, the doctors treating them are going through crises of their own in their love lives. Now, you may immediately go to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) as the most dramatic couple of the show, but on one of my many rewatches, Ive realized there is a couple that manages to tug on my heartstrings far more than I originally realized and not one of the main couples of the show. Its actually Adele (Loretta Devine) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.). I know, I know, it may seem a bit hard to believe, especially since they werent the main focus, but looking back on their story, youll realize their relationship was actually quite devastating,...
