For many, Martin Scorsese is the best gangster movie director of all time. His filmography is decorated with award-winning masterpieces that are set in cinematic history. In 1967, he directed his first feature movie, entitled Who's That Knocking at My Door. Within ten years, he directed another five movies, namely Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. The New York Giants did something very unusual this past week: they cut their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, in the middle of the season.

For some backstory: Daniel was the starter for the Giants for several seasons, which were plagued with injuries, coaching changes, and poor play. On November 18, 2024, the Giants announced they were benching Daniel in favor of third string Tommy DeVito. This effectively meant that Daniel would never play for the Giants again. He finished his career 24-44-1.

However, most teams, after benching their starter, have kept them on the bench for the rest of the season in case of injury to the new quarterback. However, in a surprise move, on November 22, 2024, the Giants cut Jones. This now allows Daniel to sign with a different team.

Nonetheless, Scorseses feelings about the inherently destructive nature of the mafia are evident by the very end, as characters like Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) are forced to face the consequences of their actions. While it was an instant critical and commercial success that still ranks among the best crime movies ever, Goodfellas was released the same week as the underrated cop drama State of Grace.

Filmmaking was the domain of Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese before Joe and Anthony Russo turned it into a family affair. How? The director of Taxi Driver, 81, has worked on almost every movie in which his family was involved. Catherine Scorsese, his late mother, was one of his closest collaborators and made appearances in several of her son’s films.

Her most famous role, however, is that of Mrs. DeVito (Tommy’s mother) in the Robert De Niro starrer film Goodfellas. And Scorsese once shared a cute little fact about this cameo. Having said that, even though it is unquestionably a superbly made film, one of its most memorable scenes was still largely improvised.

Indeed, the dinner scene with Catherine Scorsese is unquestionably hilarious in this biographical crime drama film, and to make the scene even better, she improvised most part of it.

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”

Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.
