Despite being its most obvious inspiration, Martin Scorsese reportedly did not like The Sopranos because of all the New Jersey trees in the show. The HBO crime drama, created by David Chase and starring Michael Gandolfini, followed Tony Soprano, the head of the crime family in New Jersey, and his everyday life. It covered not only his criminal activities but also his home life and mental health.
Chase has credited Scorsese’s Goodfellas multiple times for inspiring the show, but the filmmaker reportedly did not take to the New Jersey setting. Scorsese rejected the series, claiming that he did not understand the life Chase was trying to depict (via THR).
I think I only saw one episode … because I can’t identify with that generation of the underworld. They live in New Jersey with the big houses? I don’t get it. They use language – four-letter words – in front of their daughters,...

Martin Scorsese’s Casino turns 30 in 2025, but despite being a classic in its own right, the movie has been heavily overshadowed by Goodfellas. It was released in 1995 and brought back Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci for another mafia epic, but this time they were in the glitzy and cutthroat world of Las Vegas.
The movie also starred Sharon Stone in an amazing and show-stealing role that even earned her an Oscar nomination. But no matter how great a case we make for Casino, it will always be seen as a companion piece to Goodfellas, or like a spiritual successor of the movie. This bias has resulted in a phenomenal gangster movie never quite getting the recognition that it truly deserves!

The world of entertainment is a story-making machine. From fascinating tales set in unrealistic fictional worlds to tales grounded in reality offering eye-opening commentary on the world we live in, to everything above and beyond and between.
The same tales have a unique power to transport us into worlds of imagination, drama, and emotion, often leaving us questioning the blurred lines between reality and the fictional world. All these stories are born out of the incredible minds of their storytellers, aka the screenwriters. But sometimes, even storytellers need inspiration, and this inspiration comes from true stories.
While some movies like Oppenheimer, Into the Wild, Schindler’s List, and more wear their ‘based on a true story‘ badge with honor, others often end up slipping under the radar, weaving real-life inspirations into narratives that feel like pure Hollywood invention. These hidden gems often end up surprising us with their storytelling and the remarkable truths behind them.

Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas depicts the crime lifestyle perfectly, despite an expert calling out one casting choice that upset his father. The legendary director has explored the mob milieu many times over his illustrious career, starring in 1973 with his third movie, Mean Streets, which was also Scorsese's first of several collaborations with Robert De Niro. Though Mean Streets is considered by many to be one of the greatest gangster movies ever made, Scorsese's Mafia magnum opus might be Goodfellas, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made.
Over the years, Scorsese has explored many aspects of the Mafia and gangster lifestyle in Raging Bull, Casino, and Gangs of New York. However, it was his exploration of the Irish Mob in Boston, The Departed, that won Best Picture and earned Scorsese his only Academy Award for Best Director. More recently, Scorsese made The Irishman, what many...

The Sopranosis a brilliant crime drama that follows the life of mob boss Tony Soprano. Tony recently stepped into the role of boss of the Dimeo crime family, which triggered a panic attack due to the numerous layers of stress. While making tough decisions and embracing violence, Tony sought help from a psychiatrist for his panic attacks and personal issues. The trials and tribulations of the Dimeo crime family began in 1999 and continued until 2007.
The Sopranos adopted a new storytelling format, transforming television and ushering in a Golden Age of TV. With phenomenal acting, amazing character arcs, and an authentic portrayal of mafia rules, the show creates a lingering desire in the audience for more. Fortunately, there are plenty of gangster films available, and some serve as perfect companions to The Sopranos.

It takes a special kind of collaboration in cinema to really bring a film's final product together for what audiences will see in the theater. While the director is always imparting his wisdom, guidance and craftsmanship in order for their ultimate vision to come to life on screen, that final collaboration between the director and the editor is arguably the most important. A good editor will be able to make the right cuts and transitions and apply the right effects that line up with what the director wants to do. A great editor will know how to provide their own perspective on what's best for the director's vision. One of the best director and editor duos in cinema history is between Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker. Working together for nearly 60 years on more than 22 projects, Scorsese and Schoonmaker have been a powerhouse team unlike any other.

Martin Scorsese's 1990 crime masterpiece "Goodfellas" is one of the finest gangster movies ever made and has the award shelf to prove it. Still, despite its impressive six Academy Award nominations, the most esteemed awards of the industry largely avoided the mob epic -- except for one particular golden statuette.
Joe Pesci held the fort at the 1991 Academy Awards ceremony with his Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar win for his amazing turn as the volatile Tommy DeVito, the wildest card in a movie full of wild cards. He became an Oscar-winning actor with his signature cool intact. However, unlike his character -- who, as his iconic "I'm funny how?" scene shows, is extremely verbose at most times -- the actor chose to keep his speech short and sweet, uttering only five words as he took the stage to receive the golden statuette. "It's my privilege. Thank you," Pesci said before exiting the stage.

For many, Martin Scorsese is the best gangster movie director of all time. His filmography is decorated with award-winning masterpieces that are set in cinematic history. In 1967, he directed his first feature movie, entitled Who's That Knocking at My Door. Within ten years, he directed another five movies, namely Mean Streets and Taxi Driver. In total, he's directed 26 narrative feature movies, winning Academy, BAFTA, Emmy, Golden Globes and Grammy Awards. Goodfellas was his movie for 1990. The plot was based on Nicholas Pileggi's biography Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family, which was about the life of Henry Hill. The film was largely well-received, with a first-class, mostly recognizable cast. Ray Liotta had been in five films before he was cast as the central character in Goodfellas.

Goodfellas tells the story of Henry Hill and parts of the story of his wife, Karen Friedman Hill, but there’s one important aspect of Karen’s story that the movie left out. Goodfellas follows Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), an associate of the Lucchese family who worked for Paul Cicero as well as alongside some notable gangsters at the time, such as Jimmy “The Gent” Conway and Tommy DeVito. Goodfellas also covered Henry’s marriage to Karen (Lorraine Bracco), and the various highs and lows of their relationship.
Although Karen was initially troubled by Henry’s criminal activities, she was eventually drawn into the glamorous lifestyle that came with being a mobster’s wife and even got involved in some of Henry’s shady drug businesses towards the end of Goodfellas. However, there’s one important part of Karen Hill’s real story that wasn’t included in Goodfellas:...

In March 1991, Joe Pesci won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as the gangster Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas. Unlike his character, Pesci spoke conservatively while making his acceptance speech. “It was my privilege… Thank you!” he said before walking away with the trophy. This was the movie's only award (out of six nominations), and many felt it should have gotten more. Even more bizarre is the fact that The Godfather: Part II — widely considered an inferior film — received more nominations (seven) than the Scorsese flick.

Two of the leagues worst go head-to-head in this storied rivalry.
If you’re a New York Giants or Dallas Cowboys fan, you don’t have much to be thankful for this year regarding football. Entering Thursday’s matchup, these teams are a combined 6-16 on the season and certainly not too focused on this year’s playoffs. The New York Giants did something very unusual this past week: they cut their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, in the middle of the season.
For some backstory: Daniel was the starter for the Giants for several seasons, which were plagued with injuries, coaching changes, and poor play. On November 18, 2024, the Giants announced they were benching Daniel in favor of third string Tommy DeVito. This effectively meant that Daniel would never play for the Giants again. He finished his career 24-44-1.
However, most teams, after benching their starter, have kept them on the bench for the rest of the season in case of injury to the new quarterback. However, in a surprise move, on November 22, 2024, the Giants cut Jones. This now allows Daniel to sign with a different team.
You may be wondering why Daniel was cut from the team.

One of Goodfellas lightest and funniest scenes is a big contrast with what Henry (Ray Liotta), Tommy (Joe Pesci), and Jimmy (Robert De Niro) are going through at that moment, but one detail gives a whole new meaning to it. Although Martin Scorsese has made various gangster movies, all of them praised by critics, Goodfellas is the one widely regarded as his best in that genre. Based on Nicholas Pileggis 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy, Goodfellas chronicles the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill, from his teenage days running errands for Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and his crew, to becoming part of it.

One of the big reasons Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas is as beloved a gangster picture as it is has a lot to do with the movie's characters being based on real-life mafioso types alongside a little good-natured dramatic embellishment. At its core, Goodfellas is the story of how Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) worked his way up the ranks of the New York City mafia from a young age before turning on them to serve as a state witness.
Henry Hill's crime lord is a man named Paul Cicero. After enthralling a young Henry with the trappings of crime, Cicero becomes his mentor and boss. For every piece of good advice that Cicero has for Henry Hill - like keeping away from drugs - he's equally ruthless in his willingness to deal with turncoats and traitors. But what happens when Cicero realizes that his star pupil is a loose cannon?

Goodfellas was an instant hit with countless familiar faces, quotable lines and scenes that went on to have an impact on countless films. Goodfellas follows the narrator and protagonist, Henry Hill, as he rises in the mafia with two other guys by his side.
Scorsese keeps Goodfellas as real as possible. The film shows off the lavish lifestyle of organized crime but also shows the violence and grittiness that come along with it. There are so many iconic scenes in Goodfellas that it's hard to narrow down the best ones. There are, however, a few that rank in higher significance than others.

Martin Scorseses Goodfellas tells a true story, and it takes some unexpected turns throughout its third act leading up to the end. In 1990, Martin Scorsese brought another gangster film with Goodfellas, based on the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy, by Nicolas Pileggi. With a script by Scorsese and Pileggi, Goodfellas chronicles the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta), from his days as a teenager running errands for Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and his people to becoming a member of their crew.
While working for Paulie, Henry met many big names in the mob, becoming especially close to Jimmy The Gent Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). Together they committed various crimes for years, including the infamous Lufthansa heist in 1978. In his personal life, Henry met and married Karen Friedman (Lorraine Bracco), but as he got more and more involved with the mob, his marriage drastically declined.

Throughout film history, countless actors have utilized the gangster genre as a launching pad to superstardom. In the early 1930s, James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson became A-list actors following their performances in The Public Enemy and Little Caesar. During the New Hollywood movement, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro entered the upper echelon of Hollywood stardom after their seminal performances in The Godfather and Mean Streets. Internationally, stars such as Jean Gabin and Alain Delon had lengthy careers within the gangster genre, routinely giving memorable performances in works such as Pp le Moko and Le Samoura.
Delivering iconic performances in a gangster movie provides actors with the opportunity to become a staple of the pop culture lexicon. Characters such as Vito Corleone, Michael Corleone, and Tommy DeVito remain popular among audiences decades after they first appeared on the silver screen. Fictional horror movies scare us until we leave the theater. True crime dramas follow us home because they happened once to someone—or so they say.
Heists, abuses of power, murders, and multiple murders. Hollywood loves crime and all the ill-gotten bootie it brings. From 1907’s The Unwritten Law: A Thrilling Drama Based on the Thaw-White Case to the upcoming Roofman, films inspired by true crime capture a special kind of imagination. They are cautionary tales with real-life consequences, and dramas too sordid for mixed company. In the Golden Age, stories of gangland thugs came with promises of being “ripped from today’s papers.” Every robbery is a drama. Each public scandal is a potential movie trailer. Every human tragedy is a closeup. Here are some of the best films that took their plots from schemes attempted in real life.
Zodiac (2007)
Directed by David Fincher, Zodiac is as exhilarating as it is frustrating.

There have been a lot of questions surrounding HBO's upcoming "The Penguin" series. The show will see Colin Farrell step into the spotlight after he wowed everyone with his performance as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot a.k.a. the Penguin in Matt Reeves' "The Batman." Playing a cross between Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito in "Goodfellas" and Bob Hoskins' Harold Shand in "The Long Good Friday," Farrell was almost unrecognizable in the role. The actor had "unbridled fun" with the character, disappearing behind the extensive prosthetics to bring us a version of the infamous Batman rogue that was much more of a wise guy/crime boss and less of a "hideous penguin man of the sewer" (to borrow a phrase used to describe Danny DeVito's Penguin in "Batman Returns").
But while Farrell was undeniably one of the best things about "The Batman," whether he can sustain an entire premium drama remains to be seen.

Mafia Spies understands the spy novel origins of the “mob hits public enemy number one” concept better than all but the greatest entries in that secret history genre. Like the iconic Nichols’ Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, this series understands that personal betrayals nurtured in the Cold War’s shadow are its true intrigue.
Donahue deglamorizes the dapper agents of cliche to reveal flawed men defined by ego more than ethics. His America Most Wanted seeks to resolve global tensions through gangland-style tactics, foolishly courting criminals more interested in profits than patriotism. Giancana and Roselli serve their own interests above all, using national security as leverage for personal thrills.

Goodfellas is a masterpiece in filmmaking. It may sound like hyperbole, but Goodfellas really did raise the bar for crime films a feat that has yet to be matched, even by director Martin Scorsese himself. Through incredible performances from some of the titans of the crime genre and an endlessly unnerving true story, Goodfellas stood the test of time despite its difficult, and oftentimes problematic, subject and themes. Movies about gangsters are rarely, if ever, palatable or "fun" in the typical sense, but Goodfellas pushed the envelope like never before.
Scorsese was at the top of his game when he made Goodfellas. He presented audiences with perhaps the most accomplished adaptation of a true-life story committed to film. In turn, he also delivered one of the greatest movies in his already legendary career. Goodfellas...

Henry betrays Paulie twice in "Goodfellas" by engaging in drug trafficking against Paulie's rules. Henry's family ties motivate his betrayal, starting with dealing drugs to support them. Henry becomes an FBI informant and testifies against Paulie and Jimmy, sealing his fate as a traitor.
Goodfellas followed the rise and fall of Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), who ended up betraying his friend and boss, Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino), twice. Martin Scorsese has explored different genres in his career as a filmmaker, but he continues to be best known for his gangster movies, of which Goodfellas is still considered his best. Based on the non-fiction book Wiseguy, by Nicholas Pileggi, Goodfellas tells the story of real-life mob associate Henry Hill, who became fascinated by the mafia presence in his neighborhood when he was a teenager and started working for Paul Cicero at a young age.

Its safe to say that the release of Martin Scorseses crime movie masterpiece Goodfellas in September 1990 changed the gangster movie genre forever. While films about the mafia had been popular since The Godfather, Scorseses epic film sought to humanize gangsters, and show how seductive their lifestyle could be. Nonetheless, Scorseses feelings about the inherently destructive nature of the mafia are evident by the very end, as characters like Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) are forced to face the consequences of their actions. While it was an instant critical and commercial success that still ranks among the best crime movies ever, Goodfellas was released the same week as the underrated cop drama State of Grace.

Filmmaking was the domain of Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese before Joe and Anthony Russo turned it into a family affair. How? The director of Taxi Driver, 81, has worked on almost every movie in which his family was involved. Catherine Scorsese, his late mother, was one of his closest collaborators and made appearances in several of her son’s films.
Her most famous role, however, is that of Mrs. DeVito (Tommy’s mother) in the Robert De Niro starrer film Goodfellas. And Scorsese once shared a cute little fact about this cameo. Having said that, even though it is unquestionably a superbly made film, one of its most memorable scenes was still largely improvised.

Indeed, the dinner scene with Catherine Scorsese is unquestionably hilarious in this biographical crime drama film, and to make the scene even better, she improvised most part of it.

For Henry Hill, the appeal of becoming a mobster is simple. “They weren’t like anybody else. They did whatever they wanted,” he explains in the famous monologue at the start of Goodfellas. “They parked in front of hydrants and never got a ticket. When they played cards all night nobody ever called the cops.”
Hank might also add to the list that they get the best deals at the grocery store, something that happens to wiseguy Vinnie Antonelli in the comedy My Blue Heaven. Noticing an unattended pricing gun, Vinnie gives himself a huge markdown on a bunch of steaks. When the cashier totals the haul at less than $20, he’s too impressed with the $100 bill Vinnie handed him to call foul. Even the manager only stops Vinnie to give the former mobster a comment card, saying nothing of the steal of a deal that just occurred.

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

This game should be more hyped, with both team neck and neck in the NFC East standings and looking to make a push toward the NFL playoffs in the second half of the season. Instead, you have a Dallas Cowboys team that is about where you would think they should be, in second place in the division. NFL insider Ian Rapoport tweeted, “#Giants Qb Daniel Jones is, in fact, out for the season with a torn Acl, coach Brian Daboll said following today’s Mri. He’ll undergo surgery with the plan of being ready for the 2024 season.”

The Giants now have only 2 healthy quarterbacks on their roster: rookie Tommy DeVito and Matt Barkley, who is on the practice squad. It’s unclear if the Giants will pursue adding another veteran to their lineup at this time.
Earlier this year, Jones signed a 4 year, $160 million contract with $92 million of that as guaranteed money.
Acl (or anterior cruciate ligament) is a tear that commonly happens to professional athletes. In general, the rehab process takes 6-8 months.

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for Killers of the Flower MoonOn the surface, Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese's latest masterwork in a career full of them, follows closely in the structure that his classic crime dramas, namely Goodfellas and Casino, helped perfect. The story perspective gives the viewer a window into the life of organized crime, with audience surrogate Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) playing a similar role that classic Scorsese protagonists Henry Hill and Ace Rothstein once did. All of these movies follow a familiar rise-and-fall structure, where the characters benefit from their criminal activities until consequences finally catch up with them.
But looking beneath the surface, these films couldn't be more different in their thematic ambitions. In fact, Killers of the Flower Moon arguably functions most effectively as a deconstruction of Scorsese's famous gangster formula. Much like The Irishman, it feels like the work of an older...

Goodfellas is regarded as one of the best gangster films ever made, and it has a bunch of iconic quotes. Martin Scorsese has explored various genres throughout his career as a filmmaker – from black comedy with After Hours to historical drama with Silence – but he’s still best known for his crime and gangster movies. The movie considered not only his best from this genre but his best, in general, is Goodfellas, based on the nonfiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi. Goodfellas chronicles the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), who was part of the Lucchese crime family and ended up becoming an FBI informant.
During his time with the mob, Henry became close to some big mafia names, as were Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino), Jimmy “The Gent” Conway (Robert De Niro), and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), with whom he got involved in different crimes. Although Goodfellas is narrated by Henry,...

“The clouds lifted” for cinema’s future recently. At least that was how Martin Scorsese felt after he saw “TÁR,” on which he lavished praise at the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner in early January 2023.
That kind of praise means a lot. Scorsese is not just one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: he’s one of its greatest cinephiles. In recent years, he’s become known for the movies — or, as he might say of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “theme parks” — he doesn’t enjoy. But the Oscar-winning director’s favorite films are as wide-ranging in genre, year of release, and national origin as you might imagine, from Ti West’s “Pearl” to the horror flicks of Val Lewton and the works of Senegalese master Djibril Diop Mambety. He’s such an avid-moving watching buff that, in a recent interview with Time Magazine, he admitted he...

Gangster movies are often violent, but some creatively brutal deaths in these films stand out among the rest. From filmmakers including Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese, the crime genre has become one of the most popular and well-regarded in cinema. The appeal for stories about mobsters and criminals is constantly present, as they give audiences an opportunity to fantasize about a life that's both dangerous and lavish, without any real consequences.
The best gangster movies also show the downside of a life of crime, as many main characters find themselves dead at the hands of rival gangs, the police, and sometimes their own family. A brutal death can be excessively violent, showing the worst of humankind's imagination and creativity. But a death's brutality can also come from its personal nature, as gangster movie characters may find themselves at gunpoint with a longtime friend on the other end.
