Ever since the Beatles first crossed the Atlantic, in 1964, major concerts have largely taken place at venues built for sports, even though that often means poor sight lines for many fans, and less-than-optimal sound for most everybody. But a new era of live entertainment begins in late September, when U2 christen the “Sphere” in Las Vegas. The 366-foot-tall, 516-foot-wide geometric shape near the Venetian hotel completely reinvents every aspect of the rock-concert experience from the ground up, and is the culmination of seven years of work, with a budget that reportedly swelled beyond $2 billion.

James Dolan’s Sphere Entertainment, which was spun off from Msg Entertainment in April, has opened Sphere Studios, a Burbank facility for producers of immersive projects.
The space is dedicated to developing next-generation productions designed to be shown its parent company’s Sphere venues. The flagship Sphere, a high-tech blend of audio and visual technology that has caught the attention of a range of film and media pros, will open in Las Vegas this fall with a run of concerts by U2, followed by the October premiere of an immersive title called Postcard from Earth. Among the site’s many cutting-edge features is what is billed as the world’s highest-resolution LED screen.
Sphere Studios, which features a quarter-sized replica of the Vegas Sphere screen as a means of helping creative teams fine-tune their work, will showcase technology like the Big Sky ultra-high resolution camera system.

Sphere in Las Vegas isn’t just a round vehicle for a series of fall U2 concerts — it’s also host to an immersive screen of mammoth proportions that will be its own attractions when there aren’t any world-class rock bands taking over the space. And even when they are, someone has still got to come up with the visual content that will be part-and-parcel with any live residency there. That’s where Sphere Studios will come in, a division of Sphere Entertainment Co. that was announced Monday as the provider for what will appear on the venue’s ultimate big screen in Vegas (and those like it that are planned for Spheres to be built in other cities).
Also revealed Monday as part of the rollout for Sphere Studios was Big Sky, described as “an ultra-high resolution camera system” that is “the first of the Studios’ many groundbreaking immersive innovations.

If you were a billionaire CEO who wanted to create the world’s most audaciously advanced concert venue, what would you do? If the answer is “Stick 157,000 ultra-directional speakers, a three-and-a-half-acre spherical ultra-high-res video screen and vibrating floors into a enormous dome built from scratch,” you’re thinking like actual billionaire James Dolan, whose Madison Square Garden Company broke ground on the Msg Sphere in Las Vegas in September. As Msg Ventures CEO David Dibble tells it, the project began in Dolan’s office. “He turned to me and he said ‘Dibble,...
