The 1990s are often considered the golden age of sitcoms. These shows didn't hesitate to showcase the highs and lows of normal life and managed to make them laugh-out-loud funny. They also prompted the careers of stunning actors, most of whom have gone on to become household names.

Yet, since many of these shows were so successful, a lot of them used a lot of similar themes. Whether it was a unique type of character or a type of running gag, these motifs signify what's so great about these sitcoms. So, even though certain themes might get a bit repetitive, fans still adore them.

Exclusive: Spire Animation Studios has hired a pair of Pixar alums for key roles, with Ricky Nierva joining as Production Designer and Michal Makarewicz now serving as Head of Character Animation.

In their time at Spire, Nierva and Makarewicz will work closely with Creative Directors, Animation and Story Shawn Krause and Michael Surrey, Creative Directors of Development, Ted Mathot and Karen Disher, story artist Sharon Bridgeman and co-founder and Cco Brad Lewis, first turning their attention to the studio’s first animated feature Trouble that it’s developing with Danny McBride’s Rough House Pictures, as previously announced.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Ricky and Michal,” said Lewis and co-founder P.J. Gunsagar in a joint statement. “Both bring a wealth of creative experience from working at Pixar on many of the studio’s most beloved movies.

Spire Animation Studios, the newly formed feature animation studio co-founded by award-winning producer Brad Lewis (“Ratatouille”) and industry entrepreneur P.J. Gunsagar has tapped animation pioneers from Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks and Blue Sky Studios to join its team.

Among the creative team are Shawn Krause, Creative Director of Animation and Story, Michael Surrey, Creative Director, Story and Animation, Ted Mathot, Creative Director of Development and Karen Disher, Creative Director of Development.

Lewis said, “We have been trying to get a team together from a variety of places where I’ve worked with to do something creatively special.” He adds, “What gets me up in the morning is ‘let’s do something with a team that is really enthusiastic and behind it.’”

Spire Animation hopes to spearhead original and culturally relevant stories that resonate with audiences worldwide, rather than offer reboots. For Lewis, that means partnering with both best-in-class talent and emerging creatives to tell those stories.

In 2019, Disney acquired Fox for a reported $71.3 billion in one of the biggest and most talked about deals in Hollywood history. The move was controversial for a number of reasons, not least the fact that Disney soon announced that it was axing a large number of existing Fox movies in development after the studio posted a $170 million operating loss in Disney's fiscal third quarter. Sacha Baron Cohen and his movie Cochran & Lafarge were one of the casualties of this decision.

The movie was described to be an 'epic story of the greatest mimes the world has ever known'. This was a project, it would have seemed, Baron Cohen, best known for his Borat character, was built for considering he studied under renowned French clown Philippe Gaulier.

20th Century Fox's animated hit Rio is making its Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD debut this week. To help usher in this fantastic family release, we caught up with world renown musician Sergio Mendes, who contributed heavily to the soundtrack. Here, we talk about the creation of the rhythms heard in the movie, the storyline, which follows a domesticated Macaw hoping to find love in Brazil, and what it was like collaborating with director Carlos Saldanha.

It's been a boffo weekend for Fast Five. This big budget car sequel seems to have welcomed the summer blockbuster season into the box office. It managed to crank out a spectacular $83 million. Add in international takes and it's grossed $165 million. This is particularly impressive because this surprisingly well-reviewed crowd-pleaser has managed to top the previous entry in the series which made $71 million on opening weekend.

In other news, Rich Ross of Disney is no doubt tucking his tail between his legs after his first attempt at creating a new franchise bombed big time. Prom was an utter disaster. They had predicted a $9 million opening but instead the tween film debuted to a very disappointing $5 million. It seems this won't be getting the High School Musical...

Jeremy Renner, Wanda Sykes, Keke Palmer, Jennifer Lopez, Aziz Ansari and hip hop star Drake have boarded the voice cast of 20th Century Fox's Ice Age: Continental Drift.

In Ice Age: Continental Drift, Jeremy Renner will portray Gutt, a self-styled master of the high seas. Lopez will play Jennifer Lopez, a sabre toothed who melts the heart of Diego, also a sabre toothed tiger.

Denis Leary has recommitted to voice the role of Diego, while Ray Romano returns as Manny and Queen Latifah as Ellie.

"Ice Age: Continental Drift" has added new voice cast. Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lopez are on board to provide voice for characters in the animated film. Other new voice cast members are Wanda Sykes, Keke Palmer, Aziz Ansari, and Drake.

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that the ensemble was announced on Tuesday during a Fox presentation, during which the studio met potential promotional partners, licensees and retail partners. In the fourth installment of "Ice Age" film series, Renner will provide voice for Gutt, a self-styled master of the high seas. Meanwhile, Lopez will voice Shira, a saber-toothed who melts the heart of Diego.

The new arrivals will join the original voice cast, including Ray Romano who will once again provide voice for Manny, and Queen Latifah who will return as Ellie. In the meantime, Denis Leary will voice Diego, and John Leguizamo will be back to provide voice for Sid.

It was another winning weekend for the movie industry with box office receipts up an estimated 34% from this time last year making everyone hope the 2011 slump is over. Rain in much of the country no doubt helped encourage moviegoers to buy a ticket and stay indoors.

You can't keep a good bird down evidently. Rio was the champ for the second weekend running. It's $26.5 million haul was enough to beat out Madea's Big Happy Family that opened to a robust $26 million. However, Tyler Perry's sixth cross-dressing film performed under expectations. Many had been projecting a $30 million opening weekend but it wasn't able to pull that off. The last two movies featuring his popular Madea character had opened at $41 million and $30 million. Are audiences getting tired of Madea?...

Tyler Perry is poised to be the big man on campus this weekend with his latest Madea offering, Madea's Big Happy Family, projected to pull in about $30 million. The last two films in the series featuring the popular character opened to $30 million and $41 million so this should be on par with those debuts.

He'll face a bit of competition from Rio, last week's champ. The film has had a strong week at the box office (making $3.6 million on Wednesday alone) so it should continue to do well this weekend since there isn't much new competition for its targeted family audience. Look for it to fly into the second position, but if Perry's movie stumbles, it could be a repeat win for the tropical bird flick. Hop should...

The headline news for box office watchers this weekend is that it's the first to end the slump. Ticket totals had been averaging below the previous year's take most every weekend this year so far. The estimated $139 million haul is well above the same weekend last year which topped out at $119 million.

Rio was the unsurprising big winner at the Us box office this weekend with a $40 million take, right on track with the estimates going into Friday. The tropical bird film earned another $53 million overseas. Add that to its initial $80 million already earned (it had been released in some international markets prior to its Us debut) and the birds have managed to rack up an impressive $168 million so far. Not bad!

Meanwhile, Scream 4 was projected to do around $27 million but...

Will there ever be a weekend during which a completely non-animated movie takes the top spot at the box office? I don't know. But it doesn't look like it's going to be this weekend. The tropical bird-tastic Rio will be swooping into cineplexes, and will likely fly off with about $35-40 million. I think based on how marvelously Hop has managed to do over the past two weeks that folks are still hungry for their animated fantasias. Rio seems like it's much better than the bunny movie, so I think it will play really strong. Maybe even more than the $40 million. This comes from the creative team behind the Ice Age movies, so a built in fan base should be ready to turn out as well. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs grossed an astounding $886 million.

In a recent interview, comedian Ray Romano shared his thoughts on the storyline behind Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

Well, I think this one is cool because it involves having a baby. The audience will love that storyline and there are also new characters. The dinosaurs make it different and interesting. There's something for everybody in there. But I think ultimately the story is about family and the theme examines how important family is and how important it is to stick together, as well as all the added comedy and a lot of visual excitement. Romano said that kids will love the story and parents will be able to relate to the dynamic tension in the film.
