‘Jason Goes to Hell’ & ‘Jason X’ 4K Review – Evil Gets an Upgrade in Flawed But Fascinating ‘Friday the 13th’ Sequels
Image
Horror fans can be a fickle bunch, especially when it comes to nostalgic franchises. We don’t want the same story regurgitated with new characters, but straying too far from the established formula risks losing what drew fans to the property in the first place.

After churning out eight Friday the 13th movies with little deviation over the course of nine years, Paramount sold the rights to Jason Voorhees to New Line Cinema. “The House that Freddy Built” teamed with original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham to revive the slasher icon with 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday — which sidelines Jason, does not show Hell, and is not the final Friday.

The film kicks off with one of the franchise’s best prologues, condensing all the slasher tropes into a single sequence that subverts expectations by culminating in Jason being blown to smithereens by a Swat team.

Beau Bridges Had To Create General Landry's Backstory For Stargate Sg-1
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Stargate Sg-1."

In the vast, fantastical world of "Stargate Sg-1," few characters are as blunt and no-nonsense as General Hank Landry (Beau Bridges). The commander of the Stargate Command (after Sg-1 leader Jack O' Neill was promoted to major general at the start of season 9), Landry took over matters after the Sg-1 crew had officially disbanded. The Stargate Command has always been a well-oiled machine, with military officers like George S. Hammond (Don S. Davis) doing their utmost to deal with the wayward threats of intergalactic conflict and invasion. Landry continues this tradition in seasons 9 and 10 of the show, bringing with him a sense of humor that goes hand in hand with his penchant for yelling at his officers. Apart from the usual shenanigans involving the Stargate Command, Landry's arc pushes him towards a meaningful relationship with his estranged daughter, Carolyn (Lexa Doig), who happens...

What Happened To The Cast Of Stargate Sg-1?
Image
What do you do when the last spinoff of your favorite Canadian sci-fi show ended ages ago and you've worn out your DVD box set rewatching it? If you're as obsessive as I am about my favorite franchises, you might just want to catch up with all the show's stars in their most recent projects. Luckily, when it comes to the cast of "Stargate Sg-1," there are plenty of great post-series movies and shows to choose from.

The long-running "Stargate" saga, based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie, has fizzled out a bit in recent years, due in part to apparently complicated rights issues. At its height, the franchise included several TV shows and movies, plus novels, comic books, games, and a web series. None of them were quite as beloved as "Stargate Sg-1," which was nominated for nine Emmys and kick-started the careers of several of its stars. Others involved...

What The Heck Just Happened: One Of Jason Voorhees Iconic Kills In Infamous Friday The 13th Sequel Gets Glowing Review From VFX Artists
Image
This article contains descriptions of graphic onscreen violence.

Corridor Crew VFX artists break down Jason Voorhees' iconic liquid nitrogen kill in the infamous 2002 sequel, Jason X. The 10th installment in the Friday the 13th franchise pictures Jason in a futuristic world. Having been frozen in 2008, he is later discovered in the year 2455 and taken to space. Directed by Jim Isaac and written by Todd Farmer, the infamous sci-fi slasher film stars Kane Hodder reprising the role of hockey mask-wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees for the fourth and final time along with Lexa Doig, Lisa Ryder, and Chuck Campbell.

Sam Gorski, Niko Pueringer, and Wren Weichmano of The Corridor Crew were blown away by the special effects used in Jason's liquid nitrogen kill, where he pushes a girl's face into liquid nitrogen, it freezes, then he smashes it on a counter. They suspect that the film either utilized "a morph" or...

10 Horror Movies That Expertly Switch Genres
Image
Horror movies often get the short end of the stick. Many moviegoers overlook the genre, writing it off as always being predictable, too graphic, or too reliant on shock value horror. Horror, however, has versatility that is hard to come by. The genre plays with almost any theme it wants, as long as the result is terrifying. Horror is the perfect breeding ground for social commentary and dissection of real-world issues. The genre is also ideal for mixing into other genres as well.

Some of the best horror movies ever made aren't just horror. More often than not, horror melds brilliantly with other genres. Think of some of the most infamous horror films out there. Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) are two titles every movie enjoyer knows, but they aren't just horror, they're also sci-fi. Many great horror films are successful because they take advantage of blending genres.

10 Horror Movie Sequels That Subverted Their Own Franchise
Image
The horror genre has long been one of the most dynamic corners of cinema, turning in a slew of creative ideas that receive more sequels than any other genre. Naturally, with so many of these movies following the same old formula with each new entry, some directors have made a point of switching things up. Perhaps more than any other genre, horror audiences have grown accustomed to sequels that offer a stark departure from established lore, whether through new settings or entirely new characters.

Unfortunately, while horror is a place where creators have the freedom to experiment, fans aren't always receptive to these new ideas -- and they often have a good point. Simply subverting a franchise's core idea doesn't always make for a good story, but it can make for an interesting shift. These movies aren't perfect, but they deserve respect for challenging the expectations of moviegoers, even if they don't stick the landing.

Casting Talia Al Ghul For The Dcu: 10 Perfect Actors For The Brave & The Bold’s Rumored Villain
Image
Talia al Ghul may appear in the Dcu's The Brave and the Bold, which will also introduce a new Batman and Damian Wayne's Robin. Talia al Ghul is a powerful villain-turned-antihero in DC Comics, and many brilliant actors could take on the character. The likes of Jameela Jamil, Olivia Munn, Claudia Doumit, Sofia Boutella and Zoe Saldaña would be brilliant as the Dcu's Talia al Ghul.

DC Comics' Talia al Ghul is speculated to be appearing in The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new version of Bruce Wayne's Batman into the DC Universe. James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios, confirmed the development of the Dcu's The Brave and the Bold back in his January 2023 announcement, alongside nine other future projects for the rebooted DC Universe. The Brave and the Bold will replace Ben Affleck's Caped Crusader from the Dceu with a new actor, and introduce several other Batman-related characters,...

Godzilla Vs. Kong Has A Jason X Reference That Went Unnoticed By Many
Image
In Jim Isaac's goofy-ass 2002 slasher "Jason X," the immortal killer Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) is trapped in a cryogenic freezing tube by a potential victim named Rowan (Lexa Doig). In the year 2455, Rowan and Jason are discovered by a cadre of space travelers and thawed on board their starship. Jason, of course, immediately restarts his murder spree, not really caring that centuries have passed or that he's in space.

Late in the film, the eternally rotting Jason is enhanced and reconstructed using high-tech medical nanites. He is transformed into a super-strong armored space monster that is named in the credits as Über-Jason. Über-Jason is now even more unstoppable than before, and his potential victims have to distract their pursuer by any means necessary. Using hologram technology, the human characters re-create Camp Crystal Lake, Jason's old slashing grounds, circa 1980. To complete the illusion, the hologram comes equipped with a pair of topless,...

Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Virgin River season 5.

Virgin River season 5 premiere delivers a shocking character exit, setting high expectations for the rest of the season. Virgin River Season 5 Photos Tease Big Returns, a Devastating Fire, and More
Alexandra Breckenridge
It's been a year since Virgin River Season 4 concluded with multiple cliffhangers on Netflix.

With a confirmed premiere date for Virgin River Season 5 still Mia, the streaming service dropped many photos Tuesday morning, teasing coming events for the Alexandra Breckenridge drama.

Virgin River Season 4 Episode 12 wrapped with Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) dropping the mother of all bombshells by revealing that Jack (Martin Henderson) is not the father of her twins.

Naturally, fans had questions about whether this revelation would spell the end of Hammersley's tenure on the series.

The first batch of photos doesn't confirm or deny whether Charmaine will still be a part of the narrative, so we'll have to tune in whenever the series returns.

It's unclear how Charmaine's betrayal will affect Jack because he's been desperately trying to be in his ex-girlfriend's life, despite his undying love for Mel (Breckenridge).

The good news is that we learned Jack...

Jason X (2001) – Awfully Good Horror Movies
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
It’s time for a new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series, and in this one we’re looking back at one of the least popular installments in my beloved Friday the 13th franchise. That’s the tenth entry, Jason X (watch it Here), also known as “the one where Jason goes to space”. To hear all about it, check out the video embedded above!

Directed by Jim Isaac from a screenplay written by Todd Farmer (and some uncredited rewriters), Jason X has the following synopsis: The year is 2455. The Place is Old Earth. Once the shimmering blue jewel of the galaxy, Old Earth is now a contaminated planet abandoned for centuries. Yet humans have returned to the deadly place that they once fled. Not to live, but to research the ancient rusting artifacts of the bygone civilizations that caused this environmental disaster. And little does the...

‘Virgin River’ Season 6 Renewed at Netflix
Image
Even if the fifth season hasn't scored a release date yet, Netflix has already renewed Virgin River for a sixth installment, letting audiences know that the platform is confident in the future of Mel's (Alexandra Breckenridge) story. It's still hard to determine if Preacher (Colin Lawrence) will choose to be with either Julia (Lucia Walters) or Paige (Lexa Doig), but there will plenty of time to figure it out, given how the stdio is confident enough to being developing a sixth season before even taking a look at the reaction for the fifth one. This type of confidence in a story is not commonly seen during the streaming age, meaning that fans of the original show can expect plenty of drama for years to come.

Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
Why Jason X Is a Perfect Friday the 13th Sequel
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
This article contains Jason X spoilers

Anyone watching a Friday the 13th movie today comes to the classic slasher franchise with more than a few expectations. They want to see Jason Voorhees, of course, complete with his hockey mask and machete. But they likely also want to see some intellectually-challenged teens (played by people in their late 20s and early 30s) get torn apart by a lumbering monster they could never hope to stop.

It may surprise some Friday neophytes to learn that as formulaic as the series may be, not every entry contains all of those expected elements. Not only is Jason not in Part I (save for a closing stinger) and Part V, but he doesn’t get the hockey mask until midway through Part III and isn’t an undead killing machine until Part VI. Simply put, the idea of Jason in the public consciousness is usually...

Raised By Wolves: 12 TV Androids That Care or Kill
Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, and Winta McGrath in Raised by Wolves (2020)
Androids such as Mother and Father in HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves are unique among their robot cousins depicted in science fiction television. Instead of being metallic, mechanical servants devoid of any life-like appearance, androids are by definition built to look just like humans, and as a result, they are often written to have some of the same emotional strengths and flaws. But while their function may be to assist the humans that created them, they often are either caretakers like Father or killers like Mother, at least as it applies to her necromancer origins.

Reconciling those two sides is never easy, and androids weren’t always so realistic in the different eras of television, often acting as Pinocchios who wanted to be “real.” There have been many android characters in film and TV, but below are a few exemplars of each type among the main cast of some...

Chucky (2021)
Chucky Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Death By Misadventure
Chucky (2021)
Buckle up because we're in for a blood-soaked and expletive-filled trip with the killer doll everyone loves to hate.

Chucky Season 1 Episode 1 introduced us to a new crop of characters and conflicts, setting the stage for Chucky to manipulate every one of them.

It was a decent effort at revitalizing the franchise, but this was a rough around the edges premiere that left me wanting more bloodshed and one-liners from Chucky.

As our lead character, Jake was well-rounded and developed enough to join in for this journey with him, but the other kids were awful.

Maybe the intent was to make us hate them to get on board with them dying, but the promotional material, including Lexy, Devon, and Junior, leads me to believe they will have a big part in the narrative.

Devon had a semblance of likeability out of the three, but the show seemed more concerned with...

Chucky TV Series Wraps Production
Image
It may only be a couple of months before the new Chucky series premieres, but productions has finally been officially completed on the first season of the franchise's foray into the small screen. Don Mancini, original Chucky mastermind and writer/director of the new series took to his social media account at roughly the same time as the series' star Jennifer Tilly to confirm that it now really is a wrap. The series saw its full trailer released during this year's ComicCon@Home, and it is fair to say that what has been seen so far definitely is striking the right chord with many longtime Chucky fans.

"That's A Wrap!" Mancini wrote. "Chucky wants to honest the f-ck thank everyone, in front of and behind the camera, on this f-cking momentous occasion...", while Tilly simply said, "That's a wrap."

The new series will feature an ensemble cast of returning Chucky alum and new blood,...

Jennifer Tilly Teases Tiffany's Return in Chucky TV Series Photo
Image
When Jennifer Tilly joined the Child's Play franchise in Bride of Chucky, it was one of those genius moments that gave new life to the killer doll series. Now she is back with Chucky himself, Brad Dourif, in the new Chucky TV series which brings the franchise to the small screen in a big way. While Tilly was absent from the recent Curse of Chucky, she did appear at the end of the latest movie, Cult of Chucky, which set the scene for the TV series. Tilly has been active on her Twitter and Instagram accounts recently, and has shared a behind the scenes look of her character Tiffany as production continues.

Going back to where it all started, Jennifer Tilly first appeared as the human version of Tiffany in Bride Of Chucky, in which she pieced back together the wreckage of a certain Good Guy doll, only to be...

Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge in Virgin River (2019)
‘Virgin River’ Renewed by Netflix for Season 3 (Video)
Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge in Virgin River (2019)
Drama, drama, drama: “Virgin River” has been renewed for a third season, Netflix said on Friday.

That news means we’ll get some payoff on those Season 2 cliffhangers, like Jack (Martin Henderson) being shot, the whole Paige/Michelle’s (Lexa Doig) dead-husband’s-twin-brother thing, a child-sized wrench being thrown in Preacher’s (Colin Lawrence) plans to move to San Francisco and become a fancy chef and Doc (Tim Matheson) getting some mysterious — and seemingly bad — health news from another doc in another town.

Yeah, it’s A Lot.

No premiere date has been set for the upcoming Season 3. The second season debuted on Netflix on Nov. 27.

“Virgin River” follows a recently widowed big-city nurse (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves to the redwood forests of northern California, where she meets an intriguing man (Henderson).

The series also stars Lauren Hammersley and Annette O’Toole. Joining the cast for Season 3 will be Zibby Allen and Stacey Farber.

Virgin River Season 2 Trailer: Is There Hope for Mel and Jack?
Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge in Virgin River (2019)
The simmering tension between Mel and Jack will burn bright on Virgin River Season 2.

Netflix has dropped the official trailer for the upcoming season, and it is a twist-filled affair.

As you will recall, Mel skipped town at the close of Virgin River Season 1 after Charmaine planted seeds of doubt in her mind.

This causes a lot of problems when Mel ultimately returns to Virgin River to finish off her year as a nurse.

Charmaine is pregnant and wants to be with Jack, but Jack is too busy trying to find a way to get closer to Mel.

Well, there's some drama for them at the top of the trailer, in what we can only assume is their first meeting since Mel's return.

“There’s no escaping the fact that Charmaine, Jack and I are all going to have to deal with an awkward situation while I finish out my year,...
