This year marked the release of 28 Years Later and the reunion of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland. While the film has been divisive, there’s no denying the gorgeous visuals constructed by Boyle and his director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle. Plus, it was all accomplished on iPhones, which is an incredible feat itself. In honor of the film’s entertainment release, we have an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip of how the team crafted the bold look of 28 Years Later.

One of this year’s biggest horror hits, 28 Years Later, is finally available to watch at home. Sony confirmed that the movie hit digital platforms on July 29. If you missed it in theaters, now’s your chance to see what all the buzz was about.
Directed by Danny Boyle, 28 Years Later continues the story that began with 28 Days Later back in 2002. The original movie helped redefine zombie horror, and this third entry brings the same energy, but with a darker and more emotional tone.
This one jumps decades ahead, showing what life looks like long after the rage virus first broke out. The story centers on a group of survivors trying to make it on a remote island while the rest of the world still suffers.
Boyle returned to direct, and he brought along a strong cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams.

If you missed 28 Years Later in theaters, you’re in luck. The third movie in the 28 Days Later franchise is now officially available on digital, as announced by Sony. You can rent or buy it starting July 29, and if you’re a fan of horror, this is one you won’t want to skip.
The film is directed by Danny Boyle, who also made the original back in 2002. This time, the story takes place decades after the first rage virus outbreak.
Survivors now live on a remote island, still trying to deal with the fallout of everything that’s happened. The cast includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and newcomer Alfie Williams in his first movie role.
The movie has been well received. It holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and got positive reviews from critics.

Danny Boyle is back pushing cinematic boundaries — and this time, he’s doing it with an iPhone. In an exclusive behind-the-scenes sneak peek from 28 Years Later, which becomes available to buy or rent on the Apple TV app today, Boyle breaks down how his team utilized the iPhone to film select scenes of the highly anticipated follow-up to his genre-defining zombie classic. The footage shows the Oscar-winning director experimenting with a custom 20-camera rig built around the iPhone, which allowed his crew to move with lightning speed and a level of agility not always possible with traditional camera systems. And watching the movie, you'd be staggered to think he's making this epic movie from the thing you keep in your pocket to play Candy Crush.

If one knows about the evolution of film camera technology, it can be fun to visually trace changing cinematic aesthetics. There was a time, very early in cinema history, when film cameras were so enormous and fragile that they couldn't be moved too freely. Filmmakers were forced to shoot nothing but wide, locked-down shots. Also, cameras could only hold so much physical film, forcing each take to be carefully choreographed in order to save the previous celluloid resource. Eventually, cameras became a little more limber, and engineers found ways to mount them on dollies, cranes, etc., allowing filmmakers to create more dynamic, fluid motions. Cameras continued to get smaller. Camera operators could pick them up and walk around with them. When the Steadicam was invented, a camera could now be safely mounted onto the camera operator's body, allowing for the most dynamic range of motion yet.

"Enormous tension between the ambition of the wide screen format and a small device - highly flexible, very little footprint... You need a great cinematographer to bring those two tensions together." Sony has revealed a 7-minute behind-the-scenes featurette for the hit zombie horror sequel 28 Years Later, which is now playing in theaters worldwide (one of my favorite films of the year so far). Following the trend set by Ryan Coogler with Sinners discussing film formats, they've released a cool video featuring Danny Boyle and his cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle discussing the style and techniques to film 28 Years Later. As everyone already knows, this British zombie horror movie was shot using iPhones, along with professional lenses and technical equipment attached to them, of course. They discuss all the equipment and the look they were going for, inspired by the rough digital look of the very first 28 Days Later all those years ago (c.

The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.
The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.
With an eligibility window that ran from July 2024 to June 2025, the Chainsaw Awards also include some of last year's awards contenders, including The Substance, which tied Sinners for nominations.

“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.
“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”
“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

Director Danny Boyle took a path befitting an Oscar-winner after Slumdog Millionaire, when he made the awards-bait survival drama 127 Hours, starring James Franco. But this well-mannered strategy lasted exactly one film, and Boyle was soon back to his transgressive ways with Trance, a neo-noir thriller starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent Cassel. The film underperformed at the box office, and drew raised eyebrows from critics. But it remains a cult favorite, with a considerably large contingent of defenders. Speaking of cults, Boyle's latest film, 28 Years Later, has now out-grossed Trance five times.
The movie recently passed the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, and is currently sitting at $104 million. By comparison, Tranceconcluded its run with just over $20 million globally. It didn't quite break even, since it cost a reported $20 million to produce. Danny Boyle’s upcoming film 28 Years Later features a brutal chase scene that left even the crew on edge. The intense moment happens when Jamie, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his son Spike, played by Alfie Williams, are being hunted by a deadly new type of infected known as The Alpha.
These evolved infected are faster and stronger, and in one horrifying case, brutal enough to tear off heads.
The scene unfolds as Jamie and Spike try to return to Holy Island using a long, flooded road. Just as they start crossing, The Alpha appears, triggering a high-speed chase through shallow water with nowhere to hide. The tension is real, and it wasn’t just acting, filming the scene was just as nerve-racking behind the camera.

Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later delivers one of the scariest movie moments of the year with a chilling chase scene across a flooded causeway. The intense sequence features Jamie, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his son Spike, played by Alfie Williams, running from a terrifying new infected called The Alpha.
These new infected are stronger, faster, and more dangerous than before. One of them, known as Samson, is brutal enough to rip off people’s heads.
The chase begins after Jamie and Spike return from a mission to kill infected. Their only way home is across the long, water-covered road back to Holy Island. But as they make their way across, The Alpha appears. A full-speed pursuit follows, with the father and son sprinting while the Alpha closes in fast.

It’s not easy to like Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later series, unless you choose to be patient. If you do , the latest in the series is rewarding in unexpected ways. The characters are memorable when they choose to be.
My favourite is not the child protagonist Spike (Alfie Williams) , though he is a prized find, no doubt. But the best funniest lines in this frequently tedious but sporadically brilliant apocalyptic zombie film is a Swedish character named Erik who comes in the second-half equipped with quips .
Erik, played by the Swedish actor Edvin Ryding, who is the comic relief in this meditative monster movie with flesh-eating zombies who crawl all over the scenic Scottish hinterland, gets a closure he doesn’t deserve..
It is a strange and piercing dichotomy: the panoramic landscape — shot by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle as though there is no tomorrow — and the acute violence...

Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” features one of the most heart-stopping chase sequences of the year. In the film, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his son Spike (Alfie Williams) have headed to the mainland and already encountered the infected, including the evolved variant known as The Alpha. Alphas are bigger and stronger. One, named Samson, rips his victims’ heads off.
After their hunt-and-kill mission, the two head back home. But their only way back is via the causeway back to Holy Island. The tide is low enough for them. But as they make their way across, The Alpha appears and a chase ensues with Jamie and Spike running for their lives, while The Alpha remains hot on their tails.
Filming took place around Holy Island, Newcastle and North Yorkshire in England, but finding and filming the causeway for the sequence proved to be anything but easy.

’28 Years Later’ and the iPhone: Everything You Need to Know About How the $60 Million Film Was Shot
In 2002, “28 Days Later” set the world of horror on its head. Shot on a prosumer Dv camera, director Danny Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle had found a mode of production that matched the violent speed of the rage virus itself, and the new breed of zombie it gave birth to.
23 years later, Boyle returned to the franchise with “28 Years Later,” but this time with a $75 million production budget. Yet despite a major studio’s backing of the film, as well as its subsequent and already-shot sequel, the director reached for a camera even more accessible than Dv was in the early 2000s: the iPhone. IndieWire recently talked to Boyle and Mantle to find how and why.

I must confess – somewhat embarrassingly for a cinephile – that I had never seen 28 Days Later or its sequel 28 Weeks Later until last week. I approached them with great excitement, given the original film’s lasting impact on modern cinema and its role in revitalizing the zombie subgenre, which would go on to become a cultural phenomenon over the following decades. The 2002 classic turned out to be a far more human and profound piece of work than I initially expected, with a raw, realistic approach that still stands out today. The sequel effectively expands the apocalyptic world, though with less emotional sensitivity. So, I came into 28 Years Later, the long-awaited third chapter of this post-apocalyptic trilogy, with a fresh perspective.

Danny Boyle, the director of 28 Years Later, recently talked about an unexpected problem he faced while making the movie. At the film’s London premiere on June 18, Boyle explained that filming nude scenes was more complicated than expected because of laws protecting child actors.
The story is set 28 years after a virus outbreak, where many infected roam the world without clothes, since their clothing would have worn away over time.
Boyle said, “if you’ve been infected for a long time, the clothes would just disintegrate with the way that you behave.” But because 14-year-old Alfie Williams played an important role on set, the rules changed.
Boyle revealed, “Because there was a 12-year-old boy on set, you’re not allowed for anybody to be naked, not really naked, so they look naked, but it’s all prosthetics.” He called it a “nightmare” to learn about these restrictions after filming had started.

Danny Boyle, director of 28 Years Later, shared a surprising challenge he faced during filming. Speaking with People at the movie’s London premiere on June 18, Boyle revealed that filming scenes with nudity became tricky because of child protection laws.
The movie is set 28 years after the Rage virus outbreak, showing a world where survivors and infected roam. Naturally, Boyle expected the infected characters to appear without clothes since, “if you’ve been infected for a long time, the clothes would just disintegrate with the way that you behave.”
But the presence of 14-year-old Alfie Williams, who plays Spike, forced the crew to change their approach.

After more than two decades, the team behind 28 Days Later is back with a brand-new chapter in the zombie saga. Director Danny Boyle, writer Alex Garland, and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who all worked on the original 2002 film, have reunited for 28 Years Later, now in theaters through Sony Pictures Releasing.
The film picks up years after the Rage Virus first hit. This time, the story follows a small family—played by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and newcomer Alfie Williams—who live on a quiet island far from the chaos of the infected mainland.
But when they head back to the mainland to search for supplies, they find themselves in deep trouble. Along the way, they face threats not just from the infected, but also from other survivors, including a few dangerous characters played by actors like Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.

28 Years Later North America Box Office Day 1 Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)
It is the season for horror movies, and they are performing impressively at the box office. 28 Years Later has also been released, and it has registered a record opening day collection at the box office in North America. Although it beat Sinners and Final Destination 6’s collection from the previews, the film failed to surpass their release day numbers. Keep scrolling for the deets.
The film has arrived after almost two decades, and the buzz was quite strong around it. Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Anthony Dod Mantle reunited for this third installment. They worked together on the original film. A sequel is also in the making and was shot back-to-back with this one. The sequel is slated to be released in January next year and has been titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Nearly three decades have passed since the Rage virus scoured Great Britain, leaving it a quarantined wound on the global map. In 28 Years Later, the silence that followed the screaming has curdled into a new kind of quiet, a fragile stasis.
On a wind-whipped island off the coast of Scotland, a pocket of humanity has survived by turning backward. Theirs is a world remade in a primitive mold, a society of scavenged ritual and homespun technology, separated from the haunted mainland by a treacherous tidal causeway.
This fragile peace is built on a simple, brutal principle: what is over there, stays over there. The film’s focus, however, rests on a new generation, embodied by a young boy born into this fractured existence. When a crisis strikes at the heart of his family, he is compelled to look across the water not with inherited fear, but with a desperate purpose.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains major spoilers for “28 Years Later,” which is in theaters now.]
In “28 Years Later,” the aptly named sequel that comes 28 years after the rage virus ravaged England in “28 Days Later,” we find the lucky humans who survived now in a throwback communal life centered on farming, hunting, tools, customs, and gender roles ripped from a century ago. While on this week’s episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast (in full below), director Danny Boyle discussed the contradiction between these humans, protected from the zombie-like infected by life on an island, and the rage virus itself.
“They’ve learned how to survive, but they haven’t really evolved. They’ve kind of regressed, [going] back to a 1950s-type subsistence living,” Boyle said on the podcast. “ The virus, though, has evolved more creatively.”
The virus has mutated substantially on the mainland, on the other side of the causeway connecting the humans’ new island home.

Early box office previews of 28 Years Later and Pixar's Elio show a strong start for both films, with the new zombie horror film pulling ahead. Neither film is currently predicted to top the box office.
Variety reports that 28 Years Later opened with an impressive $5.8 million in Thursday previews, with Pixar's Elio pulling in significantly less with $3 million. The difference between the two numbers is likely due to Elio being a family film, with families typically heading to the cinemas on weekends. Current predictions show 28 Years Later likely to open in the $28-30 million range, with Elio expected to narrow the gap and gross between $25-30 million, too. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake is believed to still hold on to the top spot at the box office, with an estimated $40-43 million coming in on its second weekend.

It hasn’t quite been 28 years, but fans have long awaited “28 Years Later,” Danny Boyle and Alex Garland‘s return to their horror franchise full of speedy zombies and desolate British landscapes. As the title suggests, the new sequel picks up nearly three decades after the events of Boyle and Garland’s “28 Days Later,” an iconic horror film in which a man (Cillian Murphy) awakens from a coma weeks after a zombie pandemic overtakes Great Britain.
“28 Years Later” follows a new group of survivors living amongst the catastrophic effects of the Rage Virus in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Boyle and Dp Anthony Dod Mantle shot entirely on a series of iPhones, harkening back to the famous use of low-res digital photography in “28 Days Later.”
In 2002, Boyle and Garland first introduced the Rage Virus, a communicable disease that takes mere seconds to transform rational humans into erratic, aggressive monsters.

Anthony Dod Mantle has done more to advance digital photography than nearly any artist in any medium, a fact his humility rendered somewhat subtle during a career-spanning conversation I had the fortune of conducting in 2023. He could, nevertheless, casually mention that 28 Days Later constitutes “a historic film” without anyone batting an eye. The sheer aggression of Danny Boyle’s zombie picture only amplifies over two decades of digital images that have largely strived to be clean and, well, film-like. The memory of television ads with those harsh, muddy textures airing across America still boggles the mind.
Around this time did Mantle tell me about plans for a 28 Years Later trilogy on which he would shoot part one and, if all went well, three. Personal anticipation for it’s been more than I’d typically afford a zombie legacy sequel, and rumors of iPhone-shot footage piqued interest. I understood...

Whether it was the shocking imagery of a barren London in 2002, when the thought of totally empty cities felt unrealistic, or the brash, loud violence of it all: you likely remember where you were the first time you experienced 28 Days Later. It’s a film that feels utterly unique from the opening frame. A genuinely special movie that changed the genre and did so while battling the adversity of city councils, angry commuters, and even the fallout of 9/11. All leading to a genre-defining horror classic whose third upcoming sequel became the second most-watched YouTube trailer in movie history more than twenty years later. Hard to imagine for a movie that completely ran out of money before it even had an ending. This is what happened to 28 Days Later.

There are few cinematic returns more bracing, more unexpectedly moving, than 28 Years Later. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s latest entry in the rage-virus saga doesn’t just revisit the bleak terrain they first explored in 28 Days Later, it expands it, sharpens it, and then leaves it bleeding on the floor. If the first film felt like a scream into the void and 28 Weeks Later a chaotic, militarised echo, then this third instalment is something else entirely. It’s a harrowing, hallucinatory fable about decay – biological and national – that somehow finds poetry in the rot.
The story begins with a twisted lullaby… a group of children watching Teletubbies in eerie calm before an inevitable blood-soaked intrusion. It’s a macabre juxtaposition that sets the tone early with innocence torn apart by infection. But after this overture, we jump forward to a crumbling Britain, now quarantined from the...

If there's a consensus among the reviews for 28 Years Later — apart from the movie itself being quite good — it's that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland Went. For. It.
The film, which stars Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, follows the creative duo's 2002 genre-redefining 28 Days Later (somewhat disregarding 2007's Weeks), but the reviews make it clear, that this is hardly the kind lega-sequel cash-grab Hollywood has become happy to churn out.
"Wildly unexpected for a film that’s been promised for so long (even if its atheistic bent and penchant for huge narrative swings are the classic hallmarks of a collaboration between Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland)," writes IndieWire's David Ehrlich, "this tense and tender post-apocalyptic drama contends that to exist in denial of death is to corrupt the integrity of life itself."

The Latin phrase memento mori, meaning “remember you must die,” looms over Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and, in hindsight, Alex Garland’s work as a screenwriter in toto. Because what unites such disparate films as 2018’s Annihilation and 2022’s Men, and meditations on the hell of armed conflict as different in conception as 2024’s Civil War and this year’s Warfare, if not the all-consuming specter of death, the manner in which we choose to face our own oblivion, and how we make meaning of the deaths of others?

28 Years Later is an act of cinematic anarchy: a compliment and a criticism. Danny Boyle's return to his rage-fueled horror franchise is so overtly the first movie in a planned trilogy, planting storytelling seeds but barely watering them. It's desperately averse to being another straightforward 28 [Insert Time Duration] sequel, yet is missing the rabid intensity witnessed prior. Never did I presume 28 Years Later would have more in common with House of the Dead, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, or The Warriors than 28 Days Later, but here we are—and I'm torn.
The lynchpin to 28 Years Later's cast is young Alfie Williams, who stars as a 12-year-old survivor in the Scottish Highlands, Spike. The first act features Spike accompanying his scavenger father, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), as they leave their island and head to the "Mainland," where he undergoes a ritual of maturation by hunting infected monstrosities. Danny Boyle returns to the franchise he launched over two decades ago with 28 Years Later, a bold, gripping and visually arresting third entry in the cult post-apocalyptic saga. Written by Alex Garland, the film takes place nearly three decades after the initial outbreak of the “Rage virus’. The world has changed and so have the infected—and this time, the horror is more intimate, the stakes more personal and the imagery more cutting.

In “28 Days Later,” it took less than four weeks to transform London, one of the world’s busiest and most advanced cities, into an inhospitable ghost town after an outbreak of the ultra-contagious Rage virus struck the human population. Just imagine what another 10,000 or so days might do.
That’s where boundary-pushing director Danny Boyle and speculative fiction super-brain Alex Garland pick up their 2002 dystopian horror saga with “28 Years Later,” swinging to the opposite end of the U.K. to follow an entirely new set of characters. You don’t have to be a math whiz to spot that the creative duo are five years ahead of schedule. But when Boyle and Garland landed on a compelling enough reason to check back on the now-quarantined country, it hardly seems reasonable to wait. It’s hard to overstate just how small the zombie genre was 23 years ago when Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later” rejuvenated and supercharged the walking dead. George A. Romero’s films were largely sacrosanct, at least to horror fans, and there were always excellent imitators and playful homage. But the idea of a blockbuster mainstream TV series about the zombie apocalypse would have been laughable; the idea that zombies weren’t slow, shambling meat sacks was unthinkable. “28 Days Later,” with its low-fidelity “you are there” digital camerawork and deadlier, sprinting, infected monsters didn’t just give zombies a boost, they put zombies high on a pedestal, where they’ve been dwelling ever since.
It would be folly to expect “28 Years Later” — still just the third film in the franchise — to have that same impact today. The zombie genre is too big and popular and varied to blow our minds completely.

A lot can happen in 20-plus years: careers can rise and fall, empires can crumble under their own weight, cult fan favorites can give birth to money-minting franchises, a minor horror subgenre can suddenly become ubiquitous. When director Danny Boyle and screenwriter (and future director) Alex Garland dreamed up 28 Days Later… in the early 2000s, there was no Zombie Entertainment Industrial Complex outside of the Romero classics and Resident Evil. The notion of a crippling global pandemic was relegated to war-room exercises and airport-read novels. “Intellectual properties” was primarily a legal term.

Danny Boyle's "28 Years Later" comes very close to being one of the best zombie movies ever made. Then the ending arrives. Don't worry: I'm not going to give away spoilers in this review, but it's almost impossible to talk about "28 Years Later" without pointing out that the ending lands with a weird thud.
Because studios can't be content to just make one movie anymore, "28 Years Later" is the first of a whole new trilogy. Thanks to this approach, "28 Years Later" simply can't end — it has to set up the next story. And that's unfortunate, because everything leading up to that sequel table-setting moment is remarkable and effective, resulting in a scary, gruesome, and surprisingly emotional experience. Then an utterly baffling, deliriously wacky coda arrives and leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Are the final minutes of the film enough to sabotage the rest? No,...

A behind-the-scenes look at 28 Years Later is showing how a complex setup of iPhones was used to film the horror movie sequel. The different visual approach is meant to make the zombie terror even more distinct.
IGN talked to director Danny Boyle about utilizing modern technology to give the third 28 Days Later film a unique visual style, similar to its predecessors. The concept of shooting the film on iPhones stemmed from the idea that mobile phones are the modern-day equivalent of 2002's camcorder. "I suppose you could ignore it, but we decided to carry it as an influence," Boyle said.
28 Years Later utilized iPhones for certain sequences -- sometimes employing as many as 20 at a time. Other techniques to create the film's eerie visuals included attaching cameras directly to the actors, using special sensors, designing rigs for multiple cameras and working with other types of cameras and lenses. Jack O’Connell is back, and this time, he’s heading into the apocalypse. Best known for playing bad boys and rebels, the British actor is taking on a totally new kind of role in 28 Years Later, the next chapter in the iconic zombie horror series.
You might remember O’Connell from his early days on Skins, or from films like Unbroken and ’71. Now 34, the BAFTA winner is stepping into darker territory. In 28 Years Later, he plays a strange and powerful man known as Sir Jimmy Crystal, or, as he joked, “Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal” — a character he calls a “gas cunt” with a laugh.
We don’t know much about Sir Jimmy yet, but from O’Connell’s hints, he sounds like a creepy, possibly dangerous figure. Rumors suggest he’s a cult leader, someone who might twist hope into something terrifying in a world full of the infected. O...

After the 2000s brought us 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, get ready for a whole new trilogy of zombie features. Danny Boyle, returning six years since his Beatles-inspired trifle Yesterday, is back to large-scale filmmaking with 28 Years Later, co-written with Alex Garland, and starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, and Ralph Fiennes. Ahead of a June 20, 2025 release, the first impressive trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award®-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single,...

Turns out zombies don’t mellow with age.
Sony Pictures unleashed a new look at Danny Boyle’s “28 Years Later” – the threequel to the director’s groundbreaking 2002 outbreak film – at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday night.
The franchise refresh picks up, well, 28 years after the terrifying Rage virus broke out across the globe (pandemics now being shorthand for worldwide audiences). Man has found a way to survive amongst the flesh-eating zombies, on a remote English island connected to the mainland. It’s guarded, obviously, within in an inch of all lives involved.
“I still love an apocalypse,” Boyle said from the stage. “I love killing the infected. I still love blowing shit up. That’s how my agent describes my best stuff.”
He wasn’t kidding. Boyle shared a full second trailer exclusively with the exhibitors, which significantly ratchets up the terror from a teaser shared earlier this year.

As studios, production houses, and agents return from the holidays and burn off the last energy of this ceaseless, shameless awards season, numerous projects are finding lifeblood. Case in point: at Wednesday’s New York Film Critics Circle dinner I had a brief exchange with Annie Baker, who was present to accept their Best First Film honor and casually mentioned a new project that’s set up at A24, who’d shepherded Janet Planet to such success. She was tight-lipped on further details (like I could help asking), but a couple inquiries confirmed casting is in motion; likely shooting commences before long.
Equally terse, likewise exciting is notice (via The New Yorker) that Lee Chang-dong has been writing his first film since 2018’s Burning with ambitions to shoot this year. That’s about the furthest we’re getting right now, but patience isn’t even necessary: with his earliest films...

The trailer for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later has absolutely blown up since it was released a few weeks ago. It’s quickly become the most anticipated movie of 2025 for many horror fans, with a sequel also set for a January 2026 release. However, until recently, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later has been unavailable for streaming and has been out of print on Blu-ray due to rights issues. Why? It’s because Sony, who is distributing the sequels, acquired the rights to the original film, which was first distributed by Fox Searchlight (now owned by Disney), and had it pulled (although the sequel – 28 Weeks Later – which Disney owns outright – is still available). Now, with the 28 Years Later trailer reinvigorating interest in the franchise, Sony has finally re-released the original film to streaming services like iTunes, albeit in a basic HD transfer, which might surprise fans who’ve been anticipating a 4K re-release.

In 2003, a movie arrived that was nothing short of revolutionary for the horror world. With its powerful blend of social commentary and stark terror, Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later turned the zombie subgenre on its head, captivating audiences and stoking controversy about the very definition of "zombie". Its influence continues to spread, and its second sequel, 28 Years Later, is slated for 2025. So why is the groundbreaking original movie so impossible to find?
The answer is complicated. There is a reason why 28 Days Later is unavailable to stream, and a separate reason why Blu-rays of the beloved movie command a hefty price on eBay. With 28 Years Later on the horizon and the rights to the original film changing hands, fans have reason to hope that Danny Boyle's masterpiece will soon return to circulation. In the meantime, the puzzle of its obscurity needs to be picked apart.
