Mackenzie Donaldson

All the Lost Ones Review: Drowning in Its Own Plot Holes
Image
The genre of near-future apocalypse has become a crowded field, a cinematic landscape littered with the husks of failed societies and cautionary tales. Mackenzie Donaldson’s “All the Lost Ones” wades into this territory, presenting a North America not shattered by alien invasion or nuclear fire, but fractured from within.

The catalyst is frighteningly plausible: a crisis over contaminated tap water spawns a political schism. On one side are the environmentalist resistors, proponents of a life-saving “Clean Water Bill.” On the other, the United Conservancy, a right-wing militia that has, through means left entirely to the imagination, seized control of the Northeastern seaboard.

The film wisely narrows its focus from this continental conflict to an intimate stage. We are not with the generals or politicians. We are in a remote Ontario lake house with a small group of resistors in hiding. They are a blended family of fugitives, attempting to...

Devon Sawa Starrer, 'All The Lost Ones' Gets Theatrical Release
Image
The latest dystopian thriller starring horror icon Devon Sawa is set to release in theaters before going to digital platforms. Mackenzie Donaldson's All the Lost Ones was set to go straight to digital services at first, but Epic Pictures has picked it up for a small theatrical window. The film will now receive a limited release in theaters on April 18, 2025, and four days later — on April 22 — it will be available for digital purchase or rent. This is great news for the relatively small film and also for the film industry at large, as independent features rarely receive theatrical windows — especially in times when streaming has taken such a big role in terms of releasing lesser-known films.

All the Lost Ones had its premiere at the 2024 Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival. Its synopsis describes the film thusly: "In a dystopian and climate-ravaged future America torn apart by civil war, Nia,...

‘All The Lost Ones’ Ending Explained & Full Story: Is Nia Dead Or Alive?
Image
While spreading hatred and fighting over life choices, ethnicity, class, and other social dividers, we have forgotten to address what the real issues are, i.e., environmental degradation aggravated by our actions, which threatens the existence of not only humanity but life on this blue planet as we know it. Not only do we choose to be deliberately ignorant and delude ourselves into thinking it will not affect us, we deny the truth and are even prepared to wage war to uphold a flawed, pathetic belief system. MacKenzie Donaldson’s dystopian survival drama, All the Lost Ones, offers a glimpse into the horrifying future we are headed towards through a narrative that paints ecological collapse in the backdrop of a conflict that emphasizes the age-old realization: the existence of humankind as a species is indeed the worst crisis of all.
