The 18th annual Whistler Film Festival (Wff), November 28 to December 2, selected its opening night film and full program lineup from over 1,000 submissions. Festival goers can look forward to 85 fresh films including 50 features and 35 shorts representing 12 countries. Selections for this year’s festival include leading award season fare, quality Canadian content (69% of the lineup) and more female-directed films than ever before (46% of the lineup).

‘Canada’s coolest film fest’ remains true to its mandate of discovering new talent, with the inclusion of 16 first time feature films, 21 feature films directed by women, and with 64% of its program premiering Canadian features, more than any other international Canadian film festival this year.

Inspired by the 1992 film Momentum by Taylor Steele, brothers Jeff and Michael Zimbalist have written and directed their new feature documentary Momentum Generation. It sees a group of young teenage boys come together through their passion of surfing. Each member has their own story to tell and has given their life to becoming some of the biggest influential and best surfers in the world. “The ocean is chaotic, but I felt calm out there”.

In today’s film news roundup, surfing documentary “Momentum Generation” heads to HBO, Fox sets up “Spy School” and Jack Whitehall is hosting the Britannia Awards.

Acquisition

HBO has acquired the U.S. and Canada television rights to Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s surfing documentary film “Momentum Generation,” which Robert Redford executive produced.

The film made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York earlier this year where it won an Audience Award. Justine Chiara, Lizzie Friedman, Tina Elmo, and Colby Gottert produced. The Zimbalists also wrote and produced via their company All Rise Films.

Redford exec produced through Sundance Productions with Laura Michalchyshyn alongside Karen Lauder and Greg Little of Priority Pictures. Priority Pictures also financed the project. The documentary will debut on Dec. 11 on HBO.

Tribeca Docu ‘Momentum Generation’ Surfs To HBO In TV Deal
HBO has acquired U.S. and Canada TV rights to Momentum Generation, the feature-length surfing documentary from Jeff and Michael Zimbalist that won an audience award after its premiere this spring at the Tribeca Film Festival. It will air on HBO on December 11 after Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Content Group’s international digital release set for November 5.

Momentum Generation features new archival footage and raw interviews of surfing’s most legendary crew including Shane Dorian, Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, Pat O’Connell, Kalani Robb, Kelly Slater, Taylor Steele, Benji Weatherley and Ross Williams. The surfing icons over multiple years reflect on the complexity of their brotherhood and competition.

Tribeca Film Festival Honors ‘To Dust’ And ‘United Skates’ As Audience Awards Winners
The 17th Tribeca Film Festival has revealed two of its Audience Awards, tapping the Shawn Snyder-written and directed To Dust for its Narrative award, and the Dyana Winkler/Tina Brown directed United Skates for the Documentary award. Each award carries a cash prize of $10,000

Throughout the festival, which started on April 18, audience members voted by using the official Tribeca Film Festival app on their mobile devices and rated the film they had just viewed from 1-5 stars. Films in the Us Narrative Competition, International Narrative Competition, Documentary Competition, Viewpoints, Spotlight, Special Screenings, and Midnight sections were eligible.

A crew of surfers who helped change the sport tumble into each other's company in a new clip from Momentum Generation, a documentary executive-produced by Robert Redford (among others), that's set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The 10th Annual Malibu Film Festival is opening with the story of a gifted young surfer devastated by an accident, but who ended up becoming an inspiration. "Jesse's Story" features music from Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Jason Mraz, G. Love and others.

"Jesse's Story" chronicles the life of 17 year-old Jesse Billauer as he began to rise into an up-and-coming professional surfer until he severed his spinal cord, making him a quadriplegic. Paralyzed surfer doc opens Malibu Fest
Mark Jacobs' "Jesse's Story" -- a documentary about surfer Jesse Billauer, who suffered a paralyzing spinal chord injury but continued surfing -- will be the opening night film at the 10th annual Malibu Film Festival. The fest runs from Thursday through Saturday at the Malibu Cinemas and the Ocean Avenue Screening Room in Santa Monica.

The documentary also features Christopher Reeve, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Bob Hurley, Rob Machado, Kelly Slater and Shane Dorian with music by Johnson, Harper, Jason Mraz and G. Love.

Domestix, the Beverly Hills-based domestic sales company, is handling the film.
