Audiences Are Flocking to Watch Prime Video's Divisive New Action Thriller
Image
Prime Video’s latest action thriller, The Assassin, is tearing up the global streaming charts and has secured the #1 spot among Amazon’s Top 10 series in the UK, just a week after its release. The series premiered on July 25, and since then the critics and audiences have been widely divided.

At the time of writing, the show has a 90% critics' score from 10 reviewers, and a 36% audience score from 50+ viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics have, so far, loved the show’s twists and performances; however, the audience states otherwise. Viewers have criticized the show for flat acting, implausible twists, and changing tones in the show. The plot follows Julie, a retired assassin, and her estranged son Edward. When her past comes back to her, Julie attempts to reconnect with Edward after a long time, and she must resurrect her past skills to keep them both safe. The show has quickly...

‘The Good Doctor’ Star’s New British Crime Series Earns an Impressive Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
After making its UK debut on Prime Video on Friday, July 25, Harry and Jack Williams' latest crime thriller, the aptly titled The Assassin, has received plenty of widespread praise. Although not without its faults, it seems that the general consensus is that the Williams' have done it again following the huge success of The Tourist, which finished its long-awaited second season in early 2024, with many calling The Assassin its spiritual successor.

The Assassin stars The Good Doctor's Freddie Highmore, a former child star famed for his roles in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, alongside the ever-brilliant Keeley Hawes of Bodyguard fame. Currently, following its release just days ago, The Assassin has earned an impressive 86% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, albeit from just seven reviews thus far. For Highmore, this is remarkably the second-highest rating he has ever achieved,...

Freddie Highmore Is Back to His British Roots (and Loving It) in ‘The Assassin’
Image
Freddie Highmore has called London home his whole life, but you wouldn’t know it from his portfolio.

The 33-year-old actor, a former child star thanks to his titular role in Tim Burton‘s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has spent a good chunk of the last decade across the Atlantic. Shooting entirely in Vancouver, his rise to fame is best associated with the medical drama The Good Doctor from 2017 to 2024 or the psychological horror series Bates Motel in the years before that.

“I had such an incredible experience that feels so unique and will probably never happen again,” Highmore tells The Hollywood Reporter about his TV adventures abroad. “But at the same time, there was definitely an excitement to do something back in the U.K.”

He adds: “It did always feel like, ‘Oh, I should get back at some point.'”

The Brit is back with a...

The works of the Williams Brothers — Harry and Jack — have been keeping water coolers busy for over a decade now. From The Missing to Baptiste, The Widow to Liar, and The Tourist to Boat Story, the British screenwriting siblings have demonstrated a real knack for delivering propulsive, must-see-and-talk-about thrillers. A Brand-New British Crime Series Featuring 'The Good Doctor's Golden Globe-Nominated Star Gets a Huge Update
Image
Since rising through Hollywood's ranks as a child star in the likes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, and The Spiderwick Chronicles, Freddie Highmore has broken the curse that often surrounds successful child stars and broken into a triumphant acting career as an adult. Still only 33 years of age, although he still looks much younger, Highmore has dazzled and delighted in the likes of Bates Motel as the iconic Norman Bates, Spanish heist thriller The Vault, and most notably as Shaun Murphy in The Good Doctor, which officially ended last year.

Now, the London-born actor is returning to his British roots to join Bodyguard star Keeley Hawes in the upcoming crime thriller series The Assassin. Announced back in August 2024, the wait for more information about this tantalizing new Prime Video series has felt long, with that wait finally over thanks to Radio Times. “Expect the Unexpected” as ‘Gangs of London’ Producer Teases Show’s Future After Shocking Season 3 Deaths
Image
Season 3 of AMC and Sky's hit crime drama Gangs of London welcomed some new faces like Andrew Koji, Richard Dormer, and T’Nia Miller to the criminal underworld. This meant that the chess board held too many pieces, and as such, some needed to step aside. By the time Season 3 was done, the crime drama had lost a couple of lead characters: Sean Wallace, played by Joe Cole, and Ed Dumani, played by Lucian Msamati. The hallmark of good television sometimes lies in its ability to kill off fan-favorite or strong characters and survive, and both deaths were certainly a surprise. “The challenge is the same challenge we have every season: to keep delivering more surprises for the audience, and we still have an embarrassment of riches in the cast, obviously, with those that survived,” laughs series producer Hugh Warren when he tells Variety.

Undercover officer-turned-gangster Elliot Carter, played by Slow Horses star Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù,...

But before we jump into the wizarding world, let’s hit pause and look back at the episodes that made us sit up and wonder who directed a certain episode. From power plays on luxury yachts to emotional gut-punches in post-apocalyptic Wyoming,...

Studiocanal’s M-k Kennedy on Company’s Ambition to Become a ‘Television Studio With Worldwide Presence’ Through Tentpole Series Like ‘Paris Has Fallen’ and ‘Apollo Has Fallen’ (Exclusive)
Image
With only one year under her belt as Studiocanal’s executive managing director of TV series, M-k Kennedy, who joined from Netflix, is leveling up the scripted ambitions of the French pay TV group’s production arm.

After spearheading Studiocanal’s first in-house international series, “Paris Has Fallen” — which broke rating records on Canal+ and topped the charts on Amazon U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — Kennedy reveals to Variety that the highly anticipated second season of the anthology, “Apollo Has Fallen,” has started filming. Rather than taking place in a single location, the eight-part series will hop from country to country, unfolding everywhere from the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, with principal photography taking place across the U.K., Marta and Spain. The series is produced by Studiocanal, Urban Myth Films, Millenium and G-Base, who were also behind “Paris Has Fallen,” which sold to more than 170 territories worldwide.

Interview: Richard Dormer Discusses the Star Wars Dynamic in Gangs of London Season 3
Image
Richard Dormer, who plays Beric Dondarrion in HBO's Game of Thrones, joins the cast of Gangs of London Season 3. He portrays newcomer Cornelius Quinn, Sean and Billy Wallace's uncle. He also leaves an instant mark – both through his character work and Cornelius' trademark shillelagh. Cornelius is a new antagonist thrown into the mix of the gang warfare, but Dormer revealed he didn't take the role because he thought Cornelius would stand out from the others. "I didn't think he was a standout character, but I did want to make him my own," Dormer said. "I wanted to give...

Gangs Of London: Season 3
Image
Streaming on: Sky / Now

Episodes viewed: 8 of 8

Gangs Of London has always been best appreciated as an alternate-reality affair — a bit like John Wick, except people drive on the left and there’s no hotel for hitmen (though there may be an assassins-only greasy spoon we’ve not seen yet). In this London the roads are free of traffic, nobody uses public transport, and a bullet-spewing gang war can rage without being interrupted by the police, whose response times are apparently glacial. It’s a fantasy-crime slayground where anything can happen, as long as that “anything” is deadly serious and intensely, gratuitously violent. In short, if you’re willing to suspend disbelief, and aren’t squeamish, it’s a pugilistic hoot.

Despite another change of showrunners (South Korean director Kim Hong-Sun and lead writer/exec producer Peter McKenna taking over from Season 2’s Corin Hardy and Season 1’s Gareth Evans...

Image
Peacock has struck gold with The Day of the Jackal. The political thriller, led by Eddie Redmayne, has become the streamer’s most-watched original drama series within 75 days of its release, according to NBCUniversal. The show has also been a major success globally, marking the biggest new series launch for Sky.

NBCU hasn’t shared exact viewership numbers, but reports indicate that the series gained impressive traction. The first episode alone pulled in 4.6 million viewers on Sky within its first 28 days.

While The Day of the Jackal didn’t make it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming originals list, it did debut as one of the top 10 streaming dramas in the U.S. during its release week on November 14. Gangs of London season 3 gets a UK release date (When it might premiere in the U.S.)
Image
The crime gangs are back, baby … well, almost. While there are some pretty righteous gritty crime drama/thriller series out there, none are as brutal, brilliant, and bloody as Gangs of London. It’s been well over two years since season 2 dropped in the UK and the U.S., and since season 3 of the hit series was renewed. Now, thanks to Sky TV’s new trailer, we finally know when to expect its return, and it’s much sooner than you think. Exclusive: The Day of the Jackal seems to have been a sleeper hit for Peacock.

The Eddie Redmayne-led political thriller has now become the streamer’s most-watched new original drama series ever after 75 days of viewership, NBCUniversal says.

The Day of the Jackal did also debut as one of the top 10 streaming original dramas during its debut week in the U.S. on November 14, per Nielsen. However, it was under the 320M streaming minute threshold to make it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming originals list for that interval.

Did 'Castlevania: Nocturne' Just Introduce Its Next Big Bad in the Season 2 Finale?
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2.Castlevania: Nocturne's second season launches straight into the building confrontation, continuing the story of Erzsebet Báthory's (Franka Potente) growing power, Alucard's (Richard Dormer) arrival, and Richter (Edward Bluemel), Annette (Thuso Mbedu), and Maria's (Pixie Davies) efforts to stop her. Yet, a few elements not from Season 1 play a role in the story, and the most mysterious addition is the silent and frightening Mephistopheles. In truth, the shadowy figure does little in the plot, but he contributes a level of creepiness to every scene he is in. Always appearing near death, Mephistopheles has many names. While Olrox (Zahn McClarnon), who sees him the most, refers to him as Old Man Coyote, Mizrak (Aaron Neil) calls him a devil, but whatever he is called, he seems dangerous.

What Are Maria Rennard's New Dark Powers in 'Castlevania: Nocturne' Season 2?

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Castlevania: Nocturne.Castlevania: Nocturne's new season may center on Richter (Edward Bluemel), Annette (Thuso Mbedu), and Alucard's (James Callis) mission to defeat Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente) as she tries to harness the power of Sekhmet, but the most compelling storyline of Season 2 is about Maria Rennard (Pixie Davies). Picking up where Season 1 left off, Maria is in a bad place after her father, the Abbot (Richard Dormer), tried to sacrifice her to the vampires only for her mother, Tera (Nastassja Kinski), to take her place, getting turned into a vampire herself. This tragedy sets Maria on a dark path. In Season 1, she was a young vampire hunter and revolutionary, and she still is that. However, Season 2 shows her struggling with a darkness that can be seen in her powers.

Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 Makes The Show's Biggest Mystery Even More Confusing
Image
"Castlevania: Nocturne" season 2 sets up a lot of interesting threads for a potential season 3 and wraps up most of the big arcs from season 1. At the same time, the show hasn't fully answered one of its biggest mysteries, which has to do with the new kind of night creatures created by Abbott Emmanuel (Richard Dormer).

In the original "Castlevania" series, night creatures are created by devil forgemasters, human sorcerers who use a specific breed of dark magic to channel souls from hell into dead bodies, transforming them into monstrous creatures. These forgemasters each channel their spells through a specific, unique tool, and the monsters they create are loyal to them. In most cases, the souls channeled into the night creatures don't seem to be the same ones that the bodies housed in life, but there are some apparent exceptions to that rule. In general, though, night creatures are shown to be pretty mindless.

Image
This article contains spoilers for "Castlevania: Nocturne" season 2.

In many ways, "Castlevania: Nocturne" season 2 mirrors "Castlevania" season 2. Given that "Castlevania" season 2 is widely considered the show's best season, that's a huge compliment. They both amp up the ideas, storylines, and action of their respective debuts, deepening the core themes and giving increased screen time to the villains. However, certain threads are intentionally left hanging in the event of a season 3.

Members of the "Castlevania" creative team have made it clear they're not done yet and would love to keep going with "Nocturne" if Netflix approves another set of episodes. If that happens, season 3 will likely involve the mysterious dark spirit seen gliding around in the background of season 2. This character never speaks, nor do they get an official name,...
