What’s next for Fox’s blue-sky procedural?
Cozy blue-sky procedurals are making a comeback, so we’re thrilled to return to Gibsons for another dose of romance and mystery in Murder in a Small Town.
The Fox series follows Det. Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) as he adjusts to coastal living and notices all the bodies and secrets that turn up near the shoreline.
(Courtesy of Fox)
It was one of the few series that nurtured the core romance as much as it showcased the weekly cases, and the series introduced Karl and Cassandra’s (Kristin Kreuk) relationship almost immediately.
We were thrilled when Murder in a Small Town was renewed because we wanted to see more of their relationship and see them grow as individuals.

While Fox’s fall schedule is light on scripted programming, Murder in a Small Town is on it.
The blue-sky procedural was renewed for a second season in January, delighting the series’ small but passionate fan base.
Murder in a Small Town Season 1 featured some intriguing cases, but the series excelled because of Karl and Cassandra’s relationship.

It also included a strong supporting cast and exciting guest stars.

Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: Discovery killed off Rekha Sharma four different times. Ronald D. Moore's reimagining of Battlestar Galactica premiered in 2004 and became one of the most well-regarded science fiction television series of all time. With its gritty story and shocking twists, Battlestar Galactica captivated viewers, and none of its characters were ever safe. After a devastating attack from the android Cylons wipes out most of humanity, the surviving humans flee into space in search of Earth. Battlestar Galactica ran for four seasons and regularly appears on lists featuring the best television shows of all time.
With its premiere in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery brought Star Trek into the streaming era and ushered in a new golden era for the franchise. Originally conceived as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery followed Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) on her journey from committing mutiny to becoming a Starfleet Admiral.

Battlestar Galactica has earned critical acclaim throughout the years as the series boasts some memorable performances by actors who've starred in a variety of other remarkable projects. It's not an easy task to impress the cult following of a short-lived series like the original Battlestar Galactica, but the re-imagined sci-fi series from the 2000s managed to pull it off. The Syfy original series ran for four seasons and is filled with compelling character relationships and interstellar conflict. Actors like Edward James Olmos, Katee Sackhoff, and Jamie Bamber lead the series and are beloved by audiences for their sci-fi roles.

“Murder in a Small Town” is part romance, part crime procedural and all kinds of small-town cozy in between. Starring Kristin Kreuk (“Smallville”) and Rossif Sutherland (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), the new Fox drama transports viewers to the quiet coastal Canadian town of Gibsons and feels like the TV-ification of the “cozy mystery” trend that’s been so popular in online book communities in recent years.

Murder in a Small Town just premiered on Fox as a fun, moody murder mystery series!
Based on the Alberg and Cassandra Mysteries by L.R. Wright, the procedural is set in Gibsons, a small British Columbia fishing town. The 90-minute premiere opened by introducing the two main characters, chief of police Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) and librarian Cassandra Mitchell (Kristin Kurek). The pair had a lunch date after connecting online and shared some nice banter before hooking up later.
A former big-city cop, Alberg decided to take a job in Gibsons to unwind, expecting some quiet times. However, the premiere had him investigating a murder that led him to focus on a retiree (James Cromwell). It also introduced side characters like new cop Edwina Yen (Maya Lowe), slightly dim fellow cop Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas) and Cassandra’s friend Isabella (Savonna Spracklin).

Casting the right actor in an important role is one of the most important decisions that a movie or TV show can make. How this actor brings the character to life and their chemistry with the other actors is just as important as the story they're telling. Over the years, the film industry has been more open to gender-flipped casting, which sees performers of different genders take on roles initially written for or acted by someone of a separate identity. In some cases, gender-swap recasts improve upon the original movie or TV show, creating exciting opportunities for the story.
Most gender-swapped casting in movies and TV involves women stepping in to play roles traditionally portrayed by men.

Battlestar Galactica's "Last Supper" teaser hinted at the characters' fates in the finale. The image contained hidden clues about future events, reflecting character arcs. Religious overtones in the image reflect the central themes of faith and fate in the show.
Battlestar Galactica's fourth season teaser "The Last Supper" quietly set the stage for several character's fates in the show, and hinted at the full scope of the finale. Battlestar Galactica was a phenomenon when it debuted, helping solidify the sci-fi genre's evolution on television in the early era of prestige television. Canadian dramas like Saving Hope, Broadchurch, or Burden of Truth often have a certain flair.
Fox acquired the US rights to Murder in Small Town, which looks intriguing. It stars Kristen Kruek and Rossif Sutherland.
Many of us grew up watching Kruek on TV, and she's played several types of roles.
However, since she played Joanna Chang in Burden of Truth, it appears she's ideal for crime-solving in small towns.

An unfulfilled guest star appearance by Katee Sackhoff on The Office would have been a perfect callback to Jim's iconic line mocking Dwight's Battlestar Galactica obsession. Rainn Wilson revealed that the show tried to get Sackhoff to appear on The Office either as herself or a character Dwight encounters, but it never worked out. Sackhoff's Star Wars role would have added another layer of significance if she'd guest-stared on the later seasons of The Office, as Dwight is also a fan of this franchise.
A specific actor's unfulfilled guest star appearance on The Office would have been the perfect callback to one of Jim Halpert's most iconic lines. While the ensemble cast of The Office was full of strong performers, some of the best characters were only around for a short while. Throughout its nine-season run, The Office (U.S.) featured plenty of memorable guest stars in a variety of roles.

Villains are crucial to a show's legacy; a compelling antagonist can elevate the series, but mishandling a villain can ruin the entire story. A poorly executed twist (like revealing the Final Five Cylons in Battlestar Galactica) can disappoint viewers and harm the show's credibility. Characters like Colleen Wing in Iron Fist showcase how a poorly executed plot twist can undermine a show's narrative integrity.
The villain in a TV show is just as important as the hero, and their storyline can determine the fate of a series' legacy. A well-crafted antagonist, with compelling motivations and a formidable presence, can elevate a show to new heights, captivating viewers and driving the narrative forward. However, when a series missteps in its villain's characterization or storyline, it can have devastating consequences for the show's overall impact and longevity. For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Flash!
Several villains have been teased to appear in a sequel to The Flash, should The Flash 2 actually be put into development at DC Studios. After a tumultuous production period, The Flash finally released on June 16, 2023, marking Ezra Miller's first solo project as Barry Allen, a.k.a. the Flash, after previously appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. The Flash has been met with a mixed reception, and didn't meet its opening weekend box office expectations, so the fate of a sequel in Peter Safran and James Gunn's new DC Universe is uncertain, though there are several potential storylines for The Flash 2.
Loosely based on DC Comics' 2011 crossover Flashpoint, The Flash detailed Barry Allen's journey through time in an attempt to save his mother's life. By doing so, Barry creates an alternate timeline which...

"I think between the two of us, we can figure out what happened to him quicker than the cops." Mpca has unveiled an official trailer for Double Life, a mystery thriller made by Canadian filmmaker Martin Wood. Another of these forgettable films that is just being quickly dumped on VOD as more mindless content to consume. The film follows a widow who finds out from her late husband's mistress that his death was not an accident. The two women will form an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth behind his murder and unmask the man they both loved. Of course they're going to end up deeply in trouble way over their heads. Double Life stars Javicia Leslie, Pascale Hutton, Vincent Gale, John Cassini, Aaron Douglas, and Niall Matter. Everything about this looks obvious and cliche, and the twist probably isn't going to be memorable. // Continue Reading ›...

"Just give me 24 hours to show you what we do here." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for an odd romantic comedy titled Operation Christmas Drop, from Canadian TV director Martin Wood. While gathering evidence as a congressional aide to support closing a tropical U.S. Air Force base, a by-the-book congressional aide warms to its big-hearted captain. The pilot's pet project — Operation: Christmas Drop, a genuine, decades-old tradition where gifts and supplies are parachuted to residents of remote neighboring islands — has lawmakers wondering if his unit has too much spare energy. But of course - surprise! It's not such a bad thing after all. This stars Kat Graham, Alexander Ludwig, Aaron Douglas, and Virginia Madsen. It looks so extremely cheesy it's hard to watch, and it really looks like the Pentagon's propaganda department wrote the script. It's sweet, sure, but so obvious and expected, we all know how it's going to end.

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 12
“Am I the only one staring at three blank pages?”
For such an exposition heavy episode, “Three Pages” still finds plenty of time to move the core Van Helsing tale forward, and at the same time clearly demonstrate the show’s continued willingness to provide real stakes for the characters no matter how important they seem to be to the overall narrative. Penned by showrunner Jonathan Lloyd Walker and Gorrman Lee, season four’s penultimate chapter skillfully sets up what promises to be a blockbuster season finale and leaves ample room for a continuation of Vanessa Van Helsing’s hero’s journey.
As the team scrambles to decipher the recovered pages and devise a...

With a pair of short films and a long-list of TV credits to his name, writer/director Nicholas Treeshin makes his feature film debut with Thunderbird. Part mystery and part supernatural thriller, the film stars Colten Wilke as Will Brook, a reclusive fisherman who returns home to help in the search for his missing sister.
Will’s return isn’t an easy one. He and his family have a fraught history with the townsfolk and he’s not exactly welcome but Will is determined to help the lead investigator Ivy (Natalie Brown) and local cop Joe Fletcher (Aaron Douglas), solve the mystery of his sister’s disappearance - and perhaps also find her in the process.
Treeshin’s experience behind the camera is clearly on display in Thunderbird.

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 11
“You pathetic old hags.”
It’s reasonable to think the revelation of a relatively intact United States government and military might be the most compelling reveal to emerge from the latest episode of Van Helsing. Nope. “All Apologies” throws a little shapeshifting into the mix, and as long as Sgt. Miller and Julius can control the growing Van Helsing army, there may even be a flicker of light at the end of the apocalyptic tunnel.
We receive verification that the inner circle vampires possess shapeshifting abilities, a power that neatly coincides with Hansen’s revised allegiance to the Dark One and her followers. Despite the present concern he exhibits for Violet and Jack, we’ve rightly questioned his motives.
