'I Don't Want to Do This': The Flash Star Reveals Which Episode Made Him Leery
Image
Grant Gustin revealed his initial reaction to The Flash's "Duet" episode. Fans consider that Supergirl crossover a highlight of the Arrowverse, especially Kara Danvers and Barry Allen's musical number.

The Flash was the best show in The CW's Arrowverse. Fans went through a rollercoaster of emotions across nine seasons of The Flash, especially its crossover episodes. Season 3's "Duet" caught audiences by surprise, however; the plot involved Kara Danvers and Barry Allen trapped in a musical dreamworld. "Duet" was surreal because it broke from the show's grounded narrative, but audiences loved the novelty. Critics praised "Duet" for its lighthearted tone and endearing ensemble, but Grant Gustin had reservations about filming that episode; he told Michael Rosenbaum that "Duet" was an odd turn for the show.

Speaking with Variety, he described his experience as like being “shot out of a cannon” and admitted that he never really enjoyed shooting 10 months out of the year - despite being extremely grateful for Arrow. “The first two or three years of Arrow, I was gripping so tight. 'They Were So Happy Over There': Arrow Stars Agree on Their Favorite Arrowverse Crossover
Image
Arrow stars Emily Bett Rickards and David Ramsey have revealed their favorite Arrowverse crossover. Starring Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, The CW series spawned a universe of interconnected shows, including The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman, with Supergirl and Black Lightning eventually joining the fold.

Rickards and Ramsey were at Megacon, where the pair responded to Cbr's question regarding which show they most enjoyed crossing over with the most. "I liked going to The Flash because they were so happy over there," Rickards said. Ramsey discussed the difficult logistics and problems with tonality that came with making The Flash and Arrow crossovers happen but still enjoyed them. He especially enjoyed seeing Amell in Grant Gustin's Flash suit. "They were logistical nightmares," he said. "The Flash was on the other side of the wall and couldn't be more different. 'The Only Reason I Did a Decent Job': Grant Gustin Explains How He Kept The Flash Fresh
Image
Having played the iconic DC character the Flash longer than anyone, Grant Gustin has now given insight into how he kept the Scarlet Speedster fresh for so long. Gustin played the Barry Allen incarnation of the character in The CW's The Flash for nine seasons and also appeared in crossovers and other shows across the Arrowverse.

Gustin told Cbr at Megacon that the show retained its freshness because he took the responsibility of playing the Flash seriously. "It was never an intentional thought about how to keep it fresh," he began. "I'm a very scene-by-scene actor. I wanted to keep it realistic. The only reason I did a decent job with the show is I took it very seriously. Try not to suck." TV Shows With The Best Pilots And The Worst Finales
Image
When a TV show has an unforgettable pilot episode, it instantly pulls viewers in for what's to come next. Whether it be the characters, the high-quality production, or the unexpected twists, people grow curious about where the story will go. However, if the series finale is disappointing and poorly conceived, the ending could leave a noticeable stain on the show's legacy and become a part of television infamy.

Shockingly, these TV shows had the best of both worlds since they started so strongly to pull viewers in, only for the final episode to cause them to question whether the investment was worth it. They became the proper definition of having a journey that is far better than the destination. While that first episode will always remain a classic, fans prefer not to think about the underwhelming finale. These criteria are applied to multiple popular shows, such as Game of Thrones,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Musical Worked Because Of 2 Genius Tricks
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode worked wonderfully thanks to two ingenious tricks woven into the characters and story. Written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff, and directed by Dermott Downs, with original songs composed by Tom Polce and Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo, Star Trek's first-ever musical, "Subspace Rhapsody," may be the defining hour of Strange New Worlds. ‘Fire Country’ Director Says Show Came to Him When He Wanted Something Like ‘Friday Night Lights’

With many favorite shows coming back soon (finally!), including Fire Country for its second season on Friday, February 16, 2024, we of course can’t help but look back on where they left off. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds EP Unpacks the Gorn's 'Scary' Portrayal in Season 2

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 10, "Hegemony," streaming now on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds executive producer Akiva Goldsman recently unpacked the Gorn's "scary" portrayal in the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff's second season.

Goldsman, who is also Strange New Worlds' co-showrunner, rationalized the show's markedly different take on the Gorn compared to the alien species' depiction in Star Trek: The Original Series in an interview with Variety. "The Gorn, for me, were not intentionally comedic [in Star Trek: The Original Series] -- they were just executed about as well as they could be executed at that point in the run of the show at that time," he said. "Like, it was just a bad suit... But I looked at the intention, which is: scary, scary, scary, Other, Other, Other. One thing that we always do in Star Trek is we empathize -- that's in...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Has A Secret Sauce When It Comes To Picking Directors
Image
"Star Trek" has long thrived on genre diversity. While overall a sci-fi workplace drama, "Star Trek" has always free rein to delve into horror, comedy, action, political intrigue, and, most importantly, its own unique type of speculative morality play. The shows may film on reused sets, but there are subtle uses of camera, of lighting, and of color that should -- ideally -- make each individual episode stand out. This is especially true in the Paramount+ era, which makes extensive use of a high-tech, programmable backdrop called an Ar wall. Colors and moods can now be more subtly altered from show to show, and from episode to episode.

Most recently, director Dermott Downs directed a musical episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" called "Subspace Rhapsody." That episode saw the Enterprise crew psychically affected by a strange spatial phenomenon that forced them to behave, in fits, like they were characters in a stage musical.

How Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Musical Episode Brought Back Hemmer Actor in New Role
Image
A fan-favorite Star Trek: Strange New Worlds actor cameoed in plain sight for the series' highly-anticipated musical episode.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers revealed that Bruce Horak, who played former USS Enterprise Andorian engineer Hemmer, briefly appeared in "Subspace Rhapsody" as Klingon General Garkog. "We love Bruce and wanted to find a fun way to bring him back," the duo said, leading to Horak playing a Klingon whose crew belts out a spontaneous K-pop-inspired tune during the episode's final song number.

Picard Almost Had A Star Trek Musical Before Strange New Worlds
Image
Star Trek: Picard almost had a musical episode, but it never materialized, joining a list of failed attempts to create Star Trek musicals. The idea for a Picard musical may have originated from a musical cameo by Patrick Stewart's wife and a scene with Agnes Jurati singing influenced by the Borg Queen. The new Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds, successfully pulled off a musical episode after a lot of hard work and preparation, creating something truly special for fans.

Showrunner Akiva Goldsman has revealed that Star Trek: Picard almost did a musical episode before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' history-making song-and-dance spectacle. Despite several attempts over the decades, there had never been a Star Trek musical until "Subspace Rhapsody". Ronald D. Moore had attempted it twice on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, while Linda Park attempted to mount a musical episode for Star Trek: Enterprise.

Star Trek's Anson Mount Put A Little Shatner Into His Subspace Rhapsody Performance [Exclusive]
Image
If "Star Trek" has abided by any one rule over its 50-plus years of existence, it's this: "Go big or go home." That's the sort of mindset that living in the shadow of "Star Wars" will do to a property, though this approach has been aided more so by the perfect combination of vastly different expectations, the (relatively) looser constraints of television syndication, and the benefits of pioneering sci-fi as a genre that encouraged the writers to go to some seriously wacky places. Time travel, a weird goo monster, and baby Clint Howard barely even scratch the surface of what "Trek" is capable of, but "Strange New Worlds" seems fully intent on shattering the limits of what fans can expect from their favorite franchise.

Hot on the heels of its crossover with "Lower Decks," "Strange New Worlds" has somehow managed to one-up itself with an all-out musical episode, featuring practically...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Subspace Rhapsody” Soundtrack and Musical Influences
Image
This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.

Star Trek has always had a habit of taking unlikely detours into other genres, whether it was Kirk and Spock dressing like gangsters in the Tos episode “A Piece of the Action” or the powerful Deep Spine Nine period piece “Far Beyond the Stars.” But with its most recent episode, Strange New Worlds takes the franchise in the most unexpected direction.

Directed by Dermott Downs, “Subspace Rhapsody” finds the Enterprise crew breaking into song after discovering an anomaly at the edge of the Alpha Quadrant. The episode gives Uhura actor Celia Rose Gooding a chance to show off the pipes that landed them a role in Jagged Little Pill: The Musical on Broadway, and also featured a Klingon hip-hop number that recalls Han Solo’s lowest moment.

As shocking as the episode was for Trekkies, “Subspace Rhapsody” benefited from a steady hand at the helm,...

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Director Wants to Helm a Western Episode
Image
Over the years, audiences and fans of the sprawling Star Trek franchise have seen themed episodes ranging from The Next Generation’s Data (Brent Spiner) heavy Sherlock Holmes tale to Deep Space Nine’s 1960s Vegas mafia installment. But, until very recently, there was one bridge that none of the crews ever crossed — the magical and toe-tapping world of musicals. Nowadays, every long-running series has a musical episode from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Grey’s Anatomy and, of course, Riverdale, and yet somehow, Star Trek never made it that far. Enter Dermott Downs, the man who directed the penultimate episode of Strange New Worlds’ second season, “Subspace Rhapsody.” Speaking with Collider’s Samantha Coley, Downs revealed what other genre he’d love to see grace the USS Enterprise down the line.

Star Trek: Snw's Subspace Rhapsody Klingon Moment Was Met With Skepticism
Image
If "Star Trek" is about going boldly where no one has gone before, well, this latest episode of "Strange New Worlds" truly went for it. Luckily, it's difficult to imagine any other franchise feeling better equipped to suddenly drop a musical episode the likes of "Subspace Rhapsody" into the mix. (Feel free to check out /Film's review by Witney Seibold here.) But the thing about big swings is that they're always going to hit all the right notes for some fans (see what I did there?) while striking the wrong tone for others, leaving the creative team in the unenviable spot of having to figure out how far might be too far.

One such moment rears its cranial-ridged forehead in the grand finale of the episode, when the plot requires that as many people as possible break out into song in order to fix the subspace rift that threatens to overwhelm the entire galaxy.

Inside the ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Musical Episode — ‘Picard’ Almost Got There First
Image
There have certainly been musical moments in “Star Trek” before: Uhura sang while Spock played his lyre in “The Original Series”; Data and Picard duet to Gilbert and Sullivan in “Insurrection”; James Darren played a holographic nightclub singer on “Deep Space Nine.” But it took “Strange New Worlds,” the critically revered Paramount+ series nearing the end of its second season, to stage an entire musical episode.

In “Subspace Rhapsody,” Anson Mount’s Capt. Pike falls to his knees singing an emo song to his girlfriend (somewhat embarrassingly in front of everybody on the bridge of the Enterprise); Paul Wesley’s Kirk strikes a Donny Osmond-esque pose; Jess Bush’s Nurse Chapel is hoisted aloft on her back like Satine in “Moulin Rouge!”; Ethan Peck’s Spock croons about his heartbreak; Christina Chong’s La’an gets her own Howard Ashman-style “I want!” song; and actual Grammy-winning singer/Broadway...

Dermott Downs On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Musical & Outer Space Whimsy

Where to Watch Powered by

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 9 - "Subspace Rhapsody"

Dermott Downs directed the first-ever musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, bringing his experience from The Flash and Supergirl musical crossover. In the musical episode, a subspace phenomenon causes the crew of the USS Enterprise to sing and dance, but they soon realize it has catastrophic consequences. The musical episode showcases the cast's talent, with each song revealing the characters' inner fears and emotions, and it was a joy for Downs to direct this unique experience.

Dermott Downs boldly goes where no director has gone before by helming the first-ever Star Trek: Strange New Worlds musical episode. Downs' impressive list of credits includes "Duet," The Flash and Supergirl musical crossover, which made him imminently qualified to direct "Subspace Rhapsody."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Musical Episode Director On Staging Songs In The Key Of Enterprise [Exclusive Interview]
Image
The funny thing about "Subspace Rhapsody," the musical episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," is that it's still ... well, it's still a "Star Trek" episode. Yes, everyone is bursting into song and dancing through the corridors of the starship Enterprise, but it's because the crew accidentally triggers a subspace anomaly that causes a dimensional rift with unexpected consequences. In this case, it causes everyone to express themselves through song. Whoops. And naturally, it's up to Captain Pike and his crew to fix the space problem they caused before it can transform their entire universe.

Director Dermott Downs proves himself to be the perfect fit for the material. With credits that include "Arrow," "Supergirl," "Doom Patrol," and "Chucky," Downs is no stranger to geek-flavored television. But it's his work on the acclaimed "The Flash" episode "Duet," in which the title character finds himself trapped in a musical dimension, that surely...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds' Wild Musical Episode Unpacked By Director Dermott Downs
Image
Warning: The following article contains spoilers for episode nine of season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Cue the music and pick up your dropped jaw. The highly anticipated first ever musical episode in Star Trek history arrives on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Aug. 3 on Paramount+. Dubbed Subspace Rhapsody, the episode features 10 original songs, production numbers, and — what’s this? — even singing Klingons?

Oh, how this could have gone so badly. But hats off to Strange New Worlds showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, and director Dermott Downs for taking this remarkably daring leap. Let’s face it: A musical episode on Star Trek? The very idea had “jump the shark” written all over it. But in episode nine of Strange New Worlds, which was made available to press to screen, we have a remarkably creative offering that stays in sync with what’s possible in Star Trek.

Inside ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Musical — Plus, About That [Spoiler] Mention
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 9 “Subspace Rhapsody.”] If the musical proves one thing, it’s that “Strange New Worlds is not going to jump the shark,” Dermott Downs, who directed the groundbreaking episode (a first for Star Trek!), tells TV Insider. That was a concern of his, when he first heard about it, he admits, “but there’s such great writers on [the show], and once you understand the conceit of the music anomaly, when Carol Kane [who plays Pelia] says, ‘Well, have you tried bouncing music at it?’ and it comes back into the ship. Once you’re going with it, then it just became better and better because the more you sang, the more your vulnerabilities were coming out through the music.” He continues, “every song was different, to the amazing credit of the songwriters and the screenwriters. It wasn’t just like, ‘Ok, we’re going to go ...

Hush Arrives In New Batwoman 1×03 Photos
Just last night, The CW kicked off its fall season with the premieres of both Batwoman and Supergirl. Though the latter had its moments, I was ultimately lukewarm toward it. When it came to the Kate Kane’s big debut, however, I was satisfied for the most part. The pilot wasn’t perfect, don’t get me wrong, but it was far from being a stinker.

From here, I believe (and hope) that Batwoman will only continue improving upon the foundation already laid. After all, it’s not often that pilot episodes are the best offerings in inaugural seasons, so I’m remaining very optimistic. I think one would have to try to fail with this show.

If anything should get DC fans hyped for what’s on the horizon, that’ll be the live action debut of Hush set to occur in just under two weeks. Though a teenage...

New Supergirl Images Hint At Confrontation With Lena Luthor
More often than not, advance photos promoting TV shows ahead of air date are known for serving up spoilers – it’s just a matter of how much will be on display. In the case of our latest Supergirl gallery, many images included are seemingly innocuous, but the analytical among us should be able to connect some dots.

So, as you peruse the pictures provided, the first thing you’ll notice is a whole lot of everyone standing around and looking confused. The other is Lena Luthor appearing as though she’s posing for a brochure circulated by a college with a strong focus on the sciences.

But if you look deeper, you begin seeing this as a flipbook of sorts, as can sometimes be the case with promotional galleries. And since there’s a complete absence of Reign or any other sort of guest villain, you have to admit it...

The Waverider Heads To The Old West In Legends Of Tomorrow Season 3 Finale
The Waverider will be heading back to the Old West in the upcoming finale of Legends of Tomorrow‘s third season.

We’ve known for a while that the episode would feature the return of at least one fan favourite character – namely, anti-hero cowboy Jonah Hex, and now, the official synopsis reveals what else we can expect from the installment, which is punningly-titled “The Good, The Bad and the Cuddly.”

Here’s the full summary, courtesy of The CW.

The Legends plan to vanquish Mallus by using the totems doesn’t go as planned, forcing Rip (guest star Arthur Darvill) to improvise. The team finds itself regrouping in the Wild West where they run into their old pal Jonah Hex (guest star Johnathon Schaech).

Sara (Caity Lotz) leaves Ray (Brandon Routh) in charge of watching Damien Darhk (Neal McDonaugh), while she comes up with a new plan. Meanwhile, Amaya (Maisie...

"The Legends agree to accompany him to a present-day psychiatric hospital and they are surprised to discover who Constantine is trying to help.

"During the exorcism, Sara, 'Leo' (Wentworth Miller) and Constantine go missing, leaving 'Ray' (Brandon Routh) and 'Zari' (Tala Ashe) to try to take care of Constantine's client.

Legends Of Tomorrow’s Midseason Premiere Will Feature Clever Throwback To Constantine Series
In recent weeks, it seems as though both we and our readers are becomingly increasingly more excited for the midseason premiere of Legends of Tomorrow. Actually, it’s quite understandable because not only has the show been on hiatus since early December, but we also have John Constantine stopping by the Waverider to look forward to, in addition to Kid Flash becoming a series regular not long after that.

Speaking of a certain master of the dark arts, it appears as though the powers that be are going all out when it comes to making his return to the Arrowverse truly feel like an event – if it hadn’t already.

You see, thanks to the LoT Writers Room Twitter page, we’ve been teased with an image of a phone number that we’re told will be spotted on the Waverider. As it so happens, said number is that of 404-248-7182, which,...

New Legends Of Tomorrow Promo Raises Awareness For Show’s New Night And Time
In recent weeks, it seems as though both we and our readers are becomingly increasingly more excited for the midseason premiere of Legends of Tomorrow. Actually, it’s quite understandable because not only has the show been on hiatus since early December, but we also have John Constantine stopping by the Waverider to look forward to, in addition to Kid Flash becoming a series regular not long after that.

All that awesomeness aside, it’s important we not forget that the team is moving to a new night and time, a fact that we hope the network begins raising better awareness of. As you know, the time traveling DC series has called Tuesday nights at 9pm Est its home for some time now, but that time slot was recently awarded to rookie sensation Black Lightning.

As it turns out, Legends of Tomorrow will soon be moving to Monday nights at 8pm Est,...

John Constantine Arrives In Legends Of Tomorrow Midseason Premiere Synopsis
While the rest of the Arrowverse shows have been back on our screens for a couple of weeks now, we’re still waiting for the Waverider to return to our time zone so we can catch up on the rest of Legends of Tomorrow season 3. What makes the wait even more difficult though is that we know a great episode awaits us in the midseason premiere, titled “Daddy Darhkest.”

The reason why is because it’ll see the first proper appearance of Matt Ryan as John Constantine on the time-travelling show. We first met the occult detective in his own TV series over on NBC back in 2014, before he was introduced into The CW’s slice of the DC universe in Arrow season 4. Fans have been clamouring for Constantine to return to the Arrowverse ever since and finally, the showrunners have listened.

With this season’s big bad being an evil demonic entity,...

The Flash: Supergirl Gets Prepped For Surgery In New Crossover Clip
Last night, we were treated to the opening two chapters of “Crisis on Earth-x” and, quite frankly, I was blown away. Not only did the latest Arrowverse crossover feature a new level of comic book-like craziness and fight choreography that was off the charts, but the writers hit all the right beats with the many characters involved, giving this mashup much heart. Seriously, they should be applauded for managing to make this thing coherent. But I guess one advantage that comes with producing something like this for television means much less studio interference than you’d get on the motion picture side of things.

Anyway, aside from learning the true identities of Earth-x’s Blitzen and Prometheus – in addition to the introduction of what looks to be a significant character – we learned the reason why Dark Arrow and company crashed Barry and Iris’ wedding. Basically, Oliver Queen’s Nazi doppelganger...

Crisis On Earth-x Arrowverse Crossover Description Released
Before the month is out, we’ll be treated to the latest four-part Arrowverse crossover. Last year’s team-up between the heroes of Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow was one of the biggest highlights of the shared universe so far, and brought in some huge ratings for The CW.

Story-wise, it featured an alien race called the Dominators invading the Earth. How will this year go bigger, then? Well, instead of aliens, the Arrowverse heroes will face their own evil Nazi doppelgangers from another world.

The synopses for the four episodes that make up the crossover, titled “Crisis on Earth-x,” have now been revealed. In an effort to keep spoilers for how the plot progresses under wraps, the text remains basically the same for all four synopses, but it still does give us a full list of the characters who’ll be involved in each episode.

Supergirl
