If You Loved Happy Gilmore 2, You’ll Adore These 5 Comedy Films
Image
28 years after the release of Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler is back with his sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Set 29 years after Happy Gilmore won his first Tour Championship, he now returns to play golf for his daughter’s ballet school.

Just like the first film, the sequel is full of Sandler’s blend of potty‑mouth wit, underdog grit, and heartfelt redemption. The sequel brings back the beloved golf icon nearly three decades after the original, with nostalgic callbacks, the classic soundtrack, and a plot that finds Happy mentoring the next generation while still throwing fastballs (or golf tees) at anyone who gets in his way.

Reuniting Sandler with several of the original stars like Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, Blake Clark, and Christopher McDonald, the film also stars several fresh faces like Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler. A sports comedy drama that would reignite your love for absurd premises,...

Dave Bautista's Long-Awaited Action Movie 'Trap House' Finally Sets Release Date
Image
Dave Bautista is gearing up for his next feature film project, with a director, writer, and cast already assembled for the upcoming production. The actor has had a quiet year as of late, as Bautista's only major film released this year was the Paul W.S. Anderson film In The Lost Lands, which Bautista starred in alongside Milla Jovovich, which received poor reviews upon its release. Now, the Guardians of the Galaxy actor will star in another action film in what sounds like an exciting ensemble piece with impressive talent behind it.

According to a new report from Deadline,Trap House will have a wide theatrical release on November 14. The newly launched U.S. distribution company Aura Entertainment is handling the release. The film also reunites Bautista with a previous collaborator on a comedy film released in 2019.

Trap House will be directed by Michael Dowse, who directed the 2019 comedy Stuber,...

‘The Sticky’ Heist Comedy Canceled By Prime Video After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew The Sticky for a second season. The news comes more than two months after the six-episode first season of the Canadian comedy, starring Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos and Guillaume Cyr and guest starring Jamie Lee Curts, was released on Dec. 6.

Like another recently canceled Prime Video freshman comedy series, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, The Sticky could not break through and draw wide enough audience despite solid reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes). Comedies take longer than dramas to, um, stick, which could explain why streamers are doing fewer half-hour shows and why those shows have a generally higher cancellation rate after a single season.

The Sticky, produced by Blumhouse Television, Curtis’ Comet Pictures, Jonathan Levine’s Megamix and Sphere Media, was inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec’s national reserves.

Jessica Szohr, Miles Teller, Lio Tipton, and Kid Cudi in Two Night Stand (2014)
24 Best Indie Romantic Comedy Movies Of the Century
Jessica Szohr, Miles Teller, Lio Tipton, and Kid Cudi in Two Night Stand (2014)
The Romantic-Comedy genre has served cheeseballs to audiences who have often flocked to them for a pat on the back for years. It has not only provided the audience with the much-needed hope that love is around the corner but has also entertained them with neatly packed humor that makes a dolly out of life’s most lovable moments. However, with changing times, the genre has undergone a makeover of sorts. More films have established the idea of a rom-com but have twisted the narrative to serve the greater good. Subverting the genre has thus become a common trait. Indie films of late have often done wonders within the genre itself. The best romantic comedy movies of the decade have thus come out from the indie cinema. 24 of those are as follows:

24. Two Night Stand (2014) | Director: Max Nichols

“Two Night Stand” revolves around Megan (Analeigh Tipton) and Alec (Miles Teller...

Just Cause | Long-in-the-works videogame adaptation hires new writer
Bob Odenkirk in Nobody 2 (2025)
Nobody 2’s Aaron Rabin has been drafted in to try and crack the planned adaptation of open world videogame Just Cause.

A couple of years from now, a handful of movies could have Hollywood executives all in a lather about the next new big thing: open world videogame to film adaptations.

It was announced in the past few days that Simu Lui is set to produce and star in a take on the Hong Kong open world action game, Sleeping Dogs. There’s also a take on Cyberpunk 2077 heading to TV, not to mention the celebrated Fallout TV show that landed last year. Oh, and there’s Sony’s Ghost Of Tsushima adaptation on the way as well.

The biggest open world franchise of all time, Grand Theft Auto, is yet to lend its name to a film adaptation, but another one of its long-time rivals, Just Cause, has...

Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista to star in an untitled wedding sting comedy with a screenplay from The Adam Project’s Jonathan Tropper
Image
Anne Hathaway and Dave Bautista are leaping into an untitled action comedy from Banshee and The Adam Project writer Jonathan Tropper for Amazon MGM Studios and Agbo. The outrageous premise finds the duo leading a story based on an actual sting involving agents who posed as a couple to infiltrate global crime enterprises. Their work culminates in a staged wedding in New Jersey; only when their crime boss guests checked in for their seat assignments were they systematically and secretly carted off by authorities before the next party could be tipped off.

The untitled action comedy shuffles the original events, making the story about mismatched FBI partners with wildly different styles forced to cohabitate and tolerate each other’s faults for the good of the case. At first, neither agent can stand the other, but by the operation’s end, they learn to respect one another. Awwww!

Anne Hathaway has two films in post-production.

‘The Sticky’ Finale: Prime Video’s Rollicking Heist Comedy Begs for a Second Season
Image
As each episode of “The Sticky” declares, Prime Video’s twisted comedy series about a maple syrup heist in Canada, is definitely not accurately depicting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. But can you blame creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro for hearing an event title like that and wanting to let their imaginations run wild?

Across six episodes (and it deserved eight!), “The Sticky” presents an excellent case for television taking completely wild liberties with true events. With that episodic disclaimer explicitly absolving the showrunners of misinforming viewers, they’re essentially creating an original story based on a fun idea. So what if that idea happened in real life, but differently? What if it went this way instead?

The final episode, written by Donovan and Herro and directed by Michael Dowse, sees Ruth (Margo Martindale), Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy (Guillaume Cyr) finally follow through on their big plans,...

Jay Baruchel and Goon’s Michael Dowse reteam for a comedy about the daredevil stuntman Ken Carter with The Stunt Driver
Image
Back in my day, we had daredevils like Evil Knievel and Super Dave Osborne. They’d defy death while entertaining crowds of cheering fans, risking life and limb for applause. I never wanted to be a daredevil, but I did appreciate their bravery and risk-taking approach to life. Jay Baruchel is a daredevil enthusiast, too, and he’s reuniting with Goon’s Michael Dowse for The Stunt Driver, an upcoming comedy about the daredevil stuntman Ken Carter.

According to Deadline, The Stunt Driver revolves around “The Mad Canadian” Carter, who “attempts to execute the boldest maneuver of his career during the 1970s, launching a rocket car off a 90-foot-high ramp across the St. Lawrence River. The stunt would have him jump from Canada into the United States, covering more than a mile.” The film “follows Carter’s quest to make his seemingly impossible dream a reality, chronicling his preparation for...

Jay Baruchel Reteaming With ‘Goon’s Michael Dowse On Comedy ‘The Stunt Driver’
Image
Exclusive: After chronicling the BlackBerry’s rise and fall with Matt Johnson’s lauded IFC film of the same name, Jay Baruchel has come aboard to star in another true story, The Stunt Driver, a film chronicling the exploits of daredevil stuntman Ken Carter.

Reuniting Baruchel with Michael Dowse, the filmmaker behind his R-rated 2011 hockey comedy Goon, The Stunt Driver watches as “The Mad Canadian” Carter attempts to execute the boldest maneuver of his career during the 1970s, launching a rocket car off a 90-foot-high ramp across the St. Lawrence River. Covering a span of more than a mile, the stunt would have him jump from Canada into the United States. The film, which Dowse calls his “white whale project,” follows Carter’s quest to make his seemingly impossible dream a reality, chronicling his preparation for the jump and the absurd challenges he faces along the way.

Just Cause movie is back in action as Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto has been tapped to helm
Image
A movie based on the Just Cause video game franchise has been in the works for years, but it’s gotten back on track with a new director at the helm. Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle) is set to direct the adaptation for Universal Pictures, with David Leitch and Kelly McCormick producing through their 87North banner.

Just Cause puts you in the shoes of Rico Rodriguez, a secret operative who is deployed to various fictional island nations to help overthrow tyrannical dictators who are backed by The Black Hand, a lethal mercenary group. With a variety of gadgets, such as a grappling hook and wingsuit, Rico zips, races, and shoots his way through various missions, which typically involve over-the-top explosives and creative stunts. It’s a lot of fun.

Just Cause Movie Will Bring Video Game Chaos To Live-Action, Blue Beetle Director On Board
Image
A long-awaited video game adaptation now has new life. Universal Pictures has officially boarded the "Just Cause" movie, and the studio has some impressive talent behind the camera to make the project a reality. That starts with director Ángel Manuel Soto, best known for directing the DC superhero movie "Blue Beetle." The project has also added "The Fall Guy" director David Leitch and his producing partner (and wife) Kelly McCormick on board as producers with their company, 87North.

Universal has a longstanding relationship with Leitch, as the filmmaker made "Hobbs & Shaw" for the studio before stepping behind the camera for "The Fall Guy." He also very nearly directed the new "Jurassic World" film before Gareth Edwards took over. 87North has a first-look deal with the studio, so this partnership makes sense. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson are also on board as producers. As for Soto,...

The Sticky: Everything We Know About The Prime Video Comedy Series
Image
In 2012, the Canadian government-sanctioned Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers discovered that its precious barrels of sweet sap had been (gasp) stolen. Gone was the sugary liquid that filled the Fpaq warehouses. In its stead was mere water, unfit to pour over a hot stack of pancakes or glaze a juicy pork chop. It sounds silly, but the event cost Fpaq $18.7 million Cad and ranks among the most costly thefts in Canadian history. Judging by the fact that syrup production accounts for about $1.1 billion Cad to Canada's Gdp, the country's government took the crime very seriously. Now, the story is getting the Hollywood adaptation treatment in a half-hour comedy series coming to Prime Video.

Canada produces 90% of the world's maple syrup, and about 72% of that supply comes from the province of Quebec. That means at least 70% of the entire world's syrup was stolen and illegally distributed sometime between 2011 and...

‘8-Bit Christmas’ Review – Second Opinion

Stars: Neil Patrick Harris, Winslow Fegley, Steve Zahn, June Diane Raphael, Che Tafari, Sophia Reid-Gantzert, Santino Barnard, Max Malas, Brielle Rankins, Braelyn Rankins, Cyrus Arnold, Chandler Dean | Written by Kevin Jakubowski | Directed by Michael Dowse

We all know by now how popular the 80s are in modern day. The nostalgia of the past is a huge selling point in media, be it video games, books, TV shows or, indeed, movies. Well festive film 8-Bit Christmas follows suit as the adult Jake Doyle (Neil Patrick Harris) tells his daughter the story of child Jake Doyle (Winslow Fegley) and his attempt to get hold of a Nintendo Entertainment System back in the 80s. The film is told with Harris’s narration on top, for the most-part, in a flashback style. Reminiscent of A Christmas Story, we hear about Jake’s life back then, his friends, the bullies in town, the outrage of parents regarding video games,...

A Christmas movie set in the eighties with a story centered around a child that is desperate to a Nintendo Entertainment System (Nes for short) as his main present?! 8-Bit Christmas is one of those movies that seems made for me (and I’m sure many other people of a similar age). In fact it could almost be written about me too – again, I’m sure there’s plenty of people that feel the same! Getting past the nostalgia though, can this movie remain entertaining.

The story is told through Neil Patrick Harris, as Jake, as an adult in modern day. He introduces his daughter to the Nes and then tells her the story of how he got it.

On-Air Film Review: Merry Nes! Review of ‘8 Bit Christmas’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Ben Thompson on Wbgr-fm on December 2nd, 2021, reviewing a Christmas film currently streaming on HBO Max, a nostalgic look back on a 1980s childhood aptly entitled “8 Bit Christmas.”

Rating: 3.0/5.0

The film is set in Chicagoland, and the obsession of the main character is for the latest video game console … in this 1980s case an old school Nintendo Nes. Jake is portrayed as an adult by Neal Patrick Harris, who forces his daughter to listen to the story of how he procured his Nintendo unit that remarkably still works. Young Jake is portrayed by Winslow Fegley in flashbacks, and the story makes references to lost things like Malls, Marshall Fields and Bears Championships.

“8 Bit Christmas” is currently streaming on HBO Max. Featuring Neal Patrick Harris, Steve Zahn, Winslow Fegley, June Diane Raphael and Bellaluna Resnick. Written by Kevin Jakubowski.
