Review: Babylon 5: The Complete Series
Image
At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.

The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.

Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

Babylon 5 is a gigantic,...

Babylon 5: The Road Home Review | A Movie More About Its Creator
Image
David Lynch’s Eraserhead, godfather of cult movies, didn’t attract the same blockbuster audience as Star Wars, though both debuted in 1977, and both have influential legacies. Whereas producers, studios and, hell, everyone else have copied Star Wars hoping to emulate its financial success, artists — writers, directors, visual artists and so on — are the ones who want to emulate Eraserhead’s style and mood. Such directors as Stanley Kubrick, Mel Brooks, John Waters, and George Lucas himself have all expressed admiration for the innovation of the film.

The sci-fi TV series Babylon 5 has a similar legacy to Eraserhead. Other genre luminaries — Ronald D. Moore, George R.R. Martin — often cite the show as having a profound influence on their own work. Though never a major hit during its initial run from 1994 to 1998, its devoted cult following and innovation of formatting a TV series as an ultra-serialized novel keep it active in the zeitgeist.

Babylon 5 Creator J. Michael Straczynski Teases the "Joyful Noise" of New Movie
Image
It was just seven days since the Great Hollywood War descended on us all. Both the Writer’s Guild and the Actors Guild were at odd with the Producers over everything from pay equity to use of artificial intelligence. Those of us hoping to take refuge in the celebration of San Diego Comic-Con found ourselves frustrated in the corridors of the Convention Center.

All of it recalled one of the great TV science fiction series: Babylon 5. How appropriate then that our only scheduled interview to not get canceled at Comic-Con would tie-in with the new film, Babylon 5: The Road Home. The upcoming animated movie released by Warner Bros. reunites most of the series’ original cast for a sort of “what if” scenario. The story finds Commander John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) hurtling through time and experiencing alternate timelines related to some of the show’s biggest storylines.

Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.

All five seasons of Babylon 5 were scanned and remastered from the original camera negative in 4K, with a colour correction and the cleaning of dirt and scratches as well. The many CGI shots of the series have been digitally upscaled to HD, and short of a complete remaster, that’s probably...

The news Babylon 5 fans have been waiting for for over a decade finally broke late last month when the series creator. J. Michael Straczynski confirmed on social media that the hit 1990s sci-fi epic would return to our screens.

For fans, it has been a long road. A reboot to the series was mooted by Straczynski as early as the 2000s and generated a fair amount of heat before falling by the wayside. However, the announcement of an animated production, Babylon 5: The Road Home, will bring a new lease of life to the dream-given form. Here's why we're excited.

Babylon 5's Animated Cast Is the Best Way To Handle Certain Movies
Image
Babylon 5 is still considered a science fiction classic, with the series pushing sci-fi television forward and becoming acclaimed in the process. There have been attempts to reignite the series' magic, including through a reboot envisioned by creator J. Michael Straczynski. While that idea's future is still up in the air, another one's just been announced as on the way. Unexpected by even hardcore fans, this project may be the best way to add to the original series' legacy.

Babylon 5: The Road Home will be an animated movie that continues with the events seen in the show. Unfortunately, many actors from the classic series are sadly deceased, making it difficult to continue their characters' stories. Thankfully, the new Babylon 5 film will work around this issue with a solution both ingenious and utterly obvious. Here's how it will be able to push the original story forward, even without some of the actors required.

Babylon 5: the wonder that is Stephen Furst’s Vir Cotto
Jules-Pierre Malartre Jun 28, 2017

We salute a much-loved Babylon 5 character, played by the much-missed Stephen Furst...

A little less than a year ago, in the wake of Jerry Doyle’s passing, Babylon 5 creator J.M. Straczynski made a passionate plea to the universe; too many B5 alumni had died already. Following the untimely deaths of Michael O’Hare, Richard Biggs, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and more recently Jerry Doyle, Straczynski was “goddamned tired of it” and he asked the universe to “knock it off for a while”.

Babylon 5: 14 alternatives to a straight reboot
There are plenty of interesting directions a return to the Babylon 5 universe could take. Here are a few suggestions...

I read somewhere that J.M. Straczynski writes every day. That’s not surprising given his extensive body of work for television, motion pictures, novels and comics. He is best known for Babylon 5, of course. I remember what a lot of people used to say about Babylon 5, “How much can happen on a space station?” Well, a lot actually! And after five seasons of the original series, a bunch of made-for-tv movies and a couple of spin-offs, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.

That is why I was excited recently to read that Joe (apparently, he thinks you’re cool if you just call him Joe) was going back to work on Babylon 5. My excitement soon turned to dread when I found out that...

Changed Man
J. Michael Straczynski has carved out a prolific career as a TV writer-producer, creating science-fiction phenomenon Babylon 5, and cult classic Jeremiah. He's also a popular comic book scribe, having penned adventures for such iconic characters as Spider-Man, Thor, and the Fantastic Four. But 2008 marks a new stage in the career of the man who is affectionately known by his passionate fan base simply as Jms.Straczynski's feature script, Changeling, is now a major motion picture that's expected to be a key player in this year's awards season. The film, which was directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Angelina Jolie, chronicles the true story of Christine Collins, a '20s-era single mother who becomes enmeshed in a web of political corruption when she tries to find her kidnapped son. Currently, Straczynski is working on a slew of high-profile projects, including scripts for the Paul Greengrass–helmed They Marched Into Sunlight...
