After Building a Career as a Songwriter, pablopablo Is Stepping Into the Spotlight
Image
For the last couple of years, the name pablopablo has been jumping out of song credits and straight into the spotlight. The Spanish singer, songwriter, and producer has crafted Latin Grammy-winning hits for Nathy Peluso, C. Tangana, and Jorge Drexler and now, he’s reshaping global pop with a futuristic folk edge — and releasing his debut album Canciones En Mi.

“It feels really nice to be exploring my identity as a frontman,” he tells Rolling Stone on a recent Zoom call. “I feel like I know a lot about love...

2025 is shaping up to be a big year for rising star Pablopablo, and if you need proof, just check out “Eso Que Tú Llamas Amor.” The anti-Valentine’s Day anthem is the indie hitmaker’s biggest swing yet, and he’s teamed up with Mexican heavyweight Carin León and fellow genre disruptor Ralphie Choo for maximum power.

Pablopablo, who was born Pablo Drexler, hails from Madrid like his frequent collaborators Choo and C. Tangana. In 2022, he won his first two Latin Grammy awards for Song of the Year and Record...

How Elena Rose Found Her Place Among the Clouds
Image
Two years ago, the singer-songwriter Elena Rose was in the studio with her producer Maff and her little sister Cristina “Pichu” Hernández. They were listening to a breezy, beach-like beat that would become the massive hit “Caracas En El 2000,” and Rose was brainstorming lyrics to go along with the song. Her first thought was to write about her childhood back in Venezuela: “It felt very tropical, and so I had the idea of [talking about] having fun and not having plans or anything to worry about. I just wanted to speak about my childhood,...

The Latin Grammys Turn 25 — and Hold Tight to Tradition

Happy silver anniversary to the Latin Grammys! After the Spanish bombast of the 2023 celebration in Sevilla, the Latin Grammys celebrated its 25th year on Thursday night at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Were Latin music’s biggest night a person, she would be old enough to rent a car (sans the young-driver tax) and cruise down Collins Avenue with her messiest and most glamorous girlfriends.

She’d never get that messy, though. The Person of the Year honoree Carlos Vives opened the show with a regal power stance, and blazed...

5 Christmas movie classics that were celebrated at the Oscars
Image
Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.

By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

Oscar-winning songs at the Grammys: How often do they overlap?
Image
The 95th Academy Awards are behind us now, and one of the most interesting categories was Best Original Song. Winning an Oscar for an original song is definitely a prestigious honor, but perhaps the second most coveted prize for original movie music is the Grammy. Being voted on by two different academies means there’s bound to be a lot of discrepancies between the awards, especially with different voting deadlines and eligibility rules. With that in mind, what Oscar winning songs have also managed to get at least one Grammy nomination?

SEE2023 CMT Music Awards nominations list: Lainey Wilson on top with 4 bids

Two 2020s Oscar winners were also Grammy winners, albeit in different categories. Billie Eilish’s “No Time To Die” (from the film of the same name) won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media, the direct equivalent of Oscar’s Best Original Song. Meanwhile, H.E.R....

Daniel Craig in No Time to Die (2021)
22 Songs You Forgot Were Oscar Nominees
Daniel Craig in No Time to Die (2021)
Every year, there are some truly exceptional songs featured in motion pictures.

Disney and Bond films are almost always guaranteed nominations from the Academy in the Best Original Song category, often winning (as "No Time To Die" did last year).

However, there are plenty of songs that have stood the test of time that you may not even know were Oscar-nominated -- or even that they were originally from a film!

Plenty of nominated songs have gone on to outlast tthe films they came from.

Here's a list to remind you how random, enduring, and inclusive the Best Original Song category has been over the decades.

"9 to 5" - 9 to 5 (1980)

Dolly Parton's first Academy Award nomination was for her upbeat ode to the working woman from the film of the same name.

That year, Best Original Song was a tough category, with "Fame" from Fame taking the prize.

Though Parton lost the Oscar,...

The singer-songwriter filled the venue with her unmistakable voice during a dazzling performance on Oct. 27, appearing onstage in a shiny black dress with a long train, her loose hair a complement to the flow of the fabric. Shortly after the show began, David Byrne, dressed in a dapper black suit, joined her and recited an English translation of “Muerte,” a key track from De Todas Las Flores — Lafourcade’s first album of original music in seven years.

How Jorge Drexler Beat Writer’s Block to Make His Most Free-Wheeling Album Yet
Image
Even critically acclaimed icons have bouts of insecurity. For Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler, Tinta y Tiempo was an album that “almost didn’t happen.” In the past, the Oscar-winning veteran had stepped out in the world and shared bits and pieces of unfinished tunes with fellow artists — something that had been a vital part of his songwriting process. But confined to his home in Spain during the pandemic, he found himself without that nurturing feedback to support him, and many songs remained incomplete. “Two years went by, and I still couldn’t finish them,...

2022 Latin Grammys Song of the Year predictions: Will one of the year’s biggest hits win the biggest songwriting prize?
Image
The 2022 Latin Grammy nominations were announced on September 20, with the awards going out November 17. So who will win Latin music’s top songwriting award, Song of the Year?

SEE2022 Latin Grammy predictions: Record of the Year is a battle between young stars and old favorites

Let’s go through the process of elimination here. Ricky Martin‘s “A Veces Bien y A Veces Mal,” Daddy Yankee‘s “Agua,” and Mon Laferte‘s “Algo Es Mejor” are probably here in part due to being alphabetically high on the ballot, and since none of them made much noise, they will likely not win. While Carla Morrison and Fonseca are both highly respected artists, their respective songs “Encontrarme” and “Besos En La Frente” also didn’t really make much of an impact. Those five are likely the filler nominees.

A few other nominees have a slight chance. “Hentai” by Rosalía might be too polarizing for most voters,...

2022 Latin Grammy predictions: Record of the Year is a battle between young stars and old favorites
Image
I’ve discussed a couple of possible Latin Grammy winners for Album of the Year this year, but what about another general field category? Let’s look at the contenders for Record of the Year.

Alas, Pablo Alborán (“Castillos De Arena”), Camilo (“Pegao”), and Marc Anthony (“Pa’lla Voy”) are just here to fill up space. While Bad Bunny and Bomba Estéreo‘s “Ojitos Lindos” was a big hit and one of the best songs of the year, the academy has tended to shy away from rewarding Benito in the top categories, so I wouldn’t place it among the top contenders. Similarly, Shakira and Rauw Alejandro‘s “Te Felicito” was successful, but not the most successful here, and it isn’t as highly acclaimed as some of its rivals.

Both “Pa Mis Muchachas” by Christina Aguilera, Becky G, Nicki Nicole, and Nathy Peluso and “Baloncito Viejo” by Carlos Vives and Camilo could win,...

The Puerto Rican artist has been on top of charts across the globe with his massive record “Un Verano Sin Ti.” The album is easily the biggest of the year both in the US and in Latin America, producing multiple hit singles as well. So it’s not surprising that he was this year’s biggest nominee at the Latin Grammys, racking up 10 nominations across the general field and the urban music field. However, the Latin Grammys are not the Billboard Awards, and as such Bad Bunny is not assured big wins just based on sales. But what if he actually does take the big awards?

Bad Bunny has a few advantages. As mentioned above, he easily has the most successful record in the category. That isn’t always an important factor, but it could be when you take into account...

2022 Latin Grammys: How Rosalia could become the first female artist to win Album of the Year twice
Image
2022 has been a great year for Latin music. Artists like Bad Bunny, Karol G, and Anitta have found crossover success and critical acclaim. Rosalía deserves to be in that conversation too. Her third studio album, “Motomami,” broke streaming records upon arrival and became the most acclaimed album of the year, across all languages. This acclaim and commercial success resulted in Rosalía earning a slew of nominations at the 23rd Latin Grammy Awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year. With one win in that category already for her previous record, “El Mal Querer,” will Rosalía manage to achieve another?

SEE2022 Latin Grammy nominations list: Bad Bunny leads with 10, but can he finally win Album of the Year?

The Latin Grammys can be hard to predict. This is mostly due to their tendency to award older artists in the top categories, especially those that emerged from the ’90s and early 2000s.

SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022

The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

‘All the Instruments in the World’: Jorge Drexler on His Bountiful New Album ‘Tinta y Tiempo’
Image
Early in the pandemic, when so many musicians were recording stripped-back albums that reflected the quiet interiority of lockdown living, the Uruguayan artist Jorge Drexler thought he could try the same thing, making music using only the tools he had at his fingertips. “So many of us enclosed ourselves in our immediate worlds, with their guitars and our laptops,” Drexler says on a recent call from Spain. “There have been so many records made in a bedroom with whatever artists had at their disposal, so just a guitar, their voice,...

Elvis Costello and the Imposters ‘Paint the Red Rose Blue’ on New Song
Image
Elvis Costello and the Imposters have shared their new song “Paint the Red Rose Blue,” the second single off the singer’s upcoming album The Boy Named If.

“Paint the Red Rose Blue” is “the account of someone who has long-courted theatrical darkness, only for its violence and cruelty to become all too real,” Costello said in a statement. “In its wake, a bereft couple learn to love again, painting a melancholy blue over the red of romance.”

Costello has been especially prolific over the pandemic: The Boy Named If,...

Elvis Costello Details ‘Spanish Model’ Project in Upcoming Documentary
Image
A new documentary series will explore Elvis Costello’s upcoming album Spanish Model, a project in which he and producer Sebastian Krys invited artists from across the Spanish-speaking world to adapt the songs from Costello’s seminal 1978 LP This Year’s Model in an entirely new language.

The artists, who include Fito Páez, Juanes, La Marisoul, Luis Fonsi, Fuego, and Jorge Drexler, helped recreate the tracks by performing over the original master recordings — an experience they’ll discuss in the documentary.

A short trailer offers a glimpse into the series,...

Elvis Costello on Why He Remade ‘This Year’s Model’ Entirely in Spanish
Image
Elvis Costello doesn’t speak Spanish, but on at least one occasion, he’s dreamt in it.

Back in 2018, the television writer David Simon had reached out to him about transforming “This Year’s Girl,” the prickling cut from his pivotal 1978 LP This Year’s Model, into a duet for the second season of The Deuce. The thought of reworking a classic might have unnerved a less adventurous artist, but Costello, ever the shapeshifter, was intrigued. He and his frequent collaborator, the Grammy-winning Argentinean producer Sebastian Krys, dug into the...

Inside the Original Song Race: Will Voters Pick Foreign Language or Opt for Social Justice Message?
Image
If “Io Sì (Seen)” wins the song Oscar on April 25, it will mark only the fourth time in Oscar history that a foreign-language lyric has taken the prize. Diane Warren’s song for “The Life Ahead,” which co-lyricist Laura Pausini sings in Italian, is the 10th song not in the English language to be nominated.

The winners were the title song from 1960’s “Never on Sunday,” in Greek; “Al Otro Lado Del Rio,” from 2004’s “The Motorcycle Diaries,” in Spanish; and “Jai Ho,” from 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” a mix of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages.

One of its strongest competitors is “Husavik,” from “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” which is sung partly in Icelandic.

A non-English lyric is not necessarily a handicap. Multiple factors go into an Oscar song win, and it isn’t always just the competition. Manos Hadjidakis’ song “Never on Sunday” — from Jules Dassin...
