“Phoenix Rise,” fresh off its world premiere at Cannes’ MipJunior, is a “show about second chances,” say creators Matt Evans and Perrie Balthazar.
Produced by Canada’s Sinking Ship Entertainment and BBC Kids & Family Productions, it sees six marginalized students forming a bond at their new school in the U.K.’s West Midlands. With 20 episodes clocking in at 30 minutes, it’s targeting an audience of 10 years and older.
Alex Draper, Luca Alves, Lauren Corah, Tara Webb, Krish Bassi, Imogen Baker and Orla McDonagh star.
“Kids lead frantic lives. We wanted to capture that energy while also giving emotional moments some room to breathe,” Evans and Balthazar tell Variety in a joint statement.
“It’s a fast-moving show which reflects the chaos and confusion of being a teenager. Something we all can remember!”
Previously, Evans has been a writer on “EastEnders” or “Riviera.” He will also work on the upcoming...

The Witch in the Window is an elegantly-made and deeply moving family drama wrapped up in an occasionally terrifying haunted house tale. It’s the type of film which plays really well with a festival crowd, particularly a horror audience who usually expect some blood-spilling and things going bump in the night. But Witch has zero of the former and very little of the latter, yet it succeeds in still being a deeply unnerving experience, whilst also balancing an unexpectedly moving and authentic father/son relationship as its emotional beating heart.
Past collaborators and good buddies Andy Mitton and Alex Draper have created a really impressive and unique genre offering, and we managed to sit down with them over closing night drinks to briefly chat about how they achieved what they did on a minuscule budget and with a measly 12 shooting days.

I haven't yet seen director/writer/editor/composer Andy Mitton's previous two features, We Go On and Yellowbrickroad, but having watched his new film The Witch in the Window (formerly known as The Vermont House) at Fantasia 2018, I'm going to have to rectify that as soon as possible. The story follows New York City denizen and middle-aged dad Simon (Alex Draper) as he picks up his son Finn (Charlie Tacker) from his estranged wife Beverly (Arija Bareikis). The goal is to fix up a house in the middle of nowhere, Vermont, get Finn away from the Internet and city life, and to bond with some quality father-son time. Problem, is the fixer-upper in the countryside already has a resident of the permanent kind, Lydia. The issue with most haunted house...

It started the summer as part of the Bloody Disgusting AMC Horrorfest, and if you were lucky enough to catch YellowBrickRoad in that brief theatrical run, you had the privilege of enjoying a rather effective horror film. Directed by Andy Mitton and Jesse Holland, YellowBrickRoad stars Michael Laurino, Anessa Ramsey, Alex Draper, Cassidy Freeman (Smallville), Clark Freeman, Tara Giordano, Sam Elmore, Lee Wilkof, and Laura Heisler in a refreshing installment in the genre featured at Slamdance 2010, the Atlanta Film Festival 2010, Screamfest 2010, and that won Best Feature at the NYC Horror Film Festival. To help you savor this aforementioned, award-winning madness, JustPressPlay is giving away one copy of YellowBrickRoad on DVD.

The Bloody-Disgusting Selects flick Yellowbrickroad (yes, all one word) is a story about a group of researchers and filmmakers who go off into the middle of nowhere, Friar New Hampshire to be exact to try and solve a mystery of why the entire population of this town wondered off to this area back in 1940 only to never be heard from again, only about half were found, long dead.
Our group takes to the woods and the deeper they get, the weirder this story gets. Music starts playing and we're in the middle of nowhere New Hampshire people! Our team hears this unsettling music that seems to be from the era our townspeople wondered off. Think old 1940's style of light ballads, maybe. Anyway, our researchers start babbling and talking nonsense as the music plays in the background, some just wonder off almost like they have been hypnotized.

Bloody-Disgusting Selects has released this new theatrical trailer for the indie horror film YellowBrickRoad, which I saw a couple years ago up at the Slamdance Film Festival. I really liked the movie, it had a great 1970’s horror film feel to it. There’s no big special effects or anything like that, this movie relies on messing with the audience's heads and making them think. The directors of the movie even said, the the great films of the 70’s were the inspiration for it. Movies like The Shining, Carrie, The Exorcist, and Deliverance. There was most definitely a great Stephen King style vibe to it that I really liked. You can read my review for it here for anyone interested in the film.

While at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival, this writer had the pleasure of meeting the cast and creative forces behind YellowBrickRoad, an indie genre film that ended up being one of the most buzzed about entries in what has turned into Park City’s true independent film festival.

The indie pic delves into the mystery of a small New Hampshire community that, in the fall of 1940, walked together up a winding mountain trail and into the wilderness, never to be seen alive again. The only clue left behind was a single word etched into stone near the forest's edge: Yellowbrickroad. In 2009, the coordinates to the trail were declassified and a team of researchers sets out to find out the truth behind the town's disappearance. (See the trailer here !) Actors on four continents and in 18 countries will join together to perform the work of British playwright Howard Barker in an event called "21 for 21," a celebration of the 21st birthday of Barker's theatre company, the Wrestling School, that will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Middlebury College affiliated Ptp/NYC, an off-Broadway theatre company, will participate with its own sold-out production of Barker's "Judith, a Parting from the Body" just a few days later on Oct. 26 at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in Chelsea. Ptp/NYC co-director Richard Romagnoli will direct Jan Maxwell, Alex Draper and Stephanie Janssen in the production.
