Jim Lovell
Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell Dies at 97
Jim Lovell
Jim Lovell, the Apollo 13 commander whose steady leadership helped bring his crew safely home after a mid-mission explosion, died on August 7 in Lake Forest, Illinois, at age 97, NASA said. Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy called him an explorer who “helped our nation reach the Moon,” praising the calm resolve that turned a potential catastrophe into a learning milestone for the agency. Lovell’s passing was announced publicly on Friday, with tributes from the spaceflight community highlighting a four-flight career that made him one of the era’s most experienced astronauts.

Selected to NASA’s second astronaut class in 1962, Lovell flew Gemini 7’s 14-day endurance flight with Frank Borman and later partnered with Buzz Aldrin on Gemini 12. He then served as command module pilot on Apollo 8, which in December 1968 became the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon. Two years later, as commander of Apollo 13, Lovell and crewmates Jack Swigert and...

Tom Hanks Makes Touching Tribute to ‘Apollo 13’ Astronaut Jim Lovell: ‘Godspeed You, on This Next Voyage’
Image
Tom Hanks paid touching tribute to “Apollo 13” astronaut Jim Lovell on Friday as news of the 97-year-old’s death circulated online.

The Oscar-winning actor starred in Ron Howard’s Oscar-winning 1995 feature, “Apollo 13,” as the real-life commander of the 1970 space mission that nearly ended in tragedy.

“There are people who dare, who dream and who lead others to the places we would not go on our own,” Hanks wrote on Instagram. “Jim Lovell, who for a long while had gone farther into space and for longer than any other person of our planet, was that kind of guy.

“His many voyages around Earth and on to so-very-close to the moon were not made for riches or celebrity, but because such challenges as those are what fuels the course of being alive — and who better than Jim Lovell to make those voyages,” the actor continued.

Hanks concluded his post, expressing...

Jim Lovell, the celebrated Apollo 13 astronaut, has died at 97
Jim Lovell
Jim Lovell, the astronaut who commanded the Apollo 13 mission, has died at the age of 97. The near-disastrous mission, in which an oxygen tank exploded and crippled the spacecraft, is a textbook example of ingenuity under pressure. Lovell, along with his crewmates Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, improvised a solution alongside NASA personnel on the ground to swing around the moon and successfully return to Earth, all while dealing with plummeting temperatures and dwindling oxygen.

“We are enormously proud of his amazing life and career accomplishments, highlighted by his legendary leadership in pioneering human space flight,” said the Lovell family in a statement released by NASA. “But, to all of us, he was Dad, Granddad, and the Leader of our family. Most importantly, he was our Hero. We will miss his unshakeable optimism, his sense of humor, and the way he made each of us feel we could do the impossible.

Jim Lovell, Astronaut Commander of Apollo 13, Dies at 97
Image
Jim Lovell, the naval aviator and mechanical engineer who is most famous for commanding the space mission Apollo 13 safely back to Earth after mechanical issues led to an aborted moon landing in 1970, died Thursday in Lake Forrest Illinois. He was 97 years old.

NASA Administrator Sean Duffy shared the news of Lovell’s death on Friday in a special tribute.

“NASA sends its condolences to the family of Capt. Jim Lovell, whose life and work inspired millions of people across the decades,” Duffy wrote on NASA’s official website. “Jim’s character and steadfast courage helped our nation reach the Moon and turned a potential tragedy into a success from which we learned an enormous amount. We mourn his passing even as we celebrate his achievements.”

Lovell also co-authored the 1994 nonfiction account of the Apollo 13 space launch, “Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13.” That book with Jeffrey Kluger served as...

His death was announced by his family and by NASA.

“We are enormously proud of his amazing life and career accomplishments, highlighted by his legendary leadership in pioneering human space flight,” the Lovell family said in a statement released by NASA. “But, to all of us, he was Dad, Granddad, and the Leader of our family. Johnny Bananas Never Wants to Retire From ‘The Challenge’: ‘It’s Like an Emotionally Abusive Relationship’
Image
It’s very tough to pick out the most accomplished member of MTV’s vast Real World/Road Rules/Challenge universe, considering Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, podcast giant Theo Von, and WWE icon Mike “The Miz” Mizanin all got their start there. But speaking purely about the world of reality television, Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio undoubtedly takes the crown, even if giants like Christopher “Ct” Tamburello, Wes Bergmann, Cara Maria Sorbello, and Trishelle Cannatella all have very impressive resumes.

Devenanzio is not only the all-time Challenge champion with seven titles to his name,...

Trump Taps Hooters-Obsessed Maga Diehard to Be an Ambassador
Image
Donald Trump has made a lot of unconventional appointments since winning a second term in the White House. Just last night, in fact, he tapped the former Real World cast member Sean Duffy to head up the nation’s space program, in addition to his current role as transportation secretary. The appointment came a day after Duffy called the New York City subway system, which millions of people use every day, “dangerous.”

The president outdid himself by tapping Nick Adams to serve as the United States ambassador to Malaysia. Adams...

Man Afraid to Ride Subway Named Head of NASA
Image
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who has vehemently described the New York City subway as a hellscape, has been named to oversee NASA — putting him in charge of rocket ships that are far more dangerous than public transit.

After Donald Trump pulled the nomination of tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman for the post, the president announced Duffy would be the interim NASA administrator. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, praising the former Real World cast member: “Sean is doing a Tremendous job in handling our Country’s Transportation Affairs, including creating...

Trump and His Team Tease Vengeance Against Elon as Feud Goes Nuclear
Image
President Donald Trump has threatened to “terminate” Elon Musk’s federal contracts and cancel subsidies beneficial to his companies after the billionaire publicly accused the president of being ungrateful in an explosion of tensions between the two men who lavished praise on one another less than a week ago as Trump bid Musk farewell from the administration.

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it,...

Trump Names Fox Host Jeanine Pirro Interim U.S. Attorney for DC
Image
Jeanine Pirro is exiting Fox News after 14 years to become interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia. President Trump announced her appointment Thursday.

Pirro, a former country judge and district attorney from New York who has been a reliable supporter of Trump over the years, joined Fox News as a host in 2011. The first show he hosted for the network was “Justice With Judge Jeanine,” focusing on legal stories in the news. She most recently served as a co-host of “The Five,” which has routinely been the highest-rated program on cable news.

Trump announced Pirro, 73, as the new U.S. attorney for DC on Truth Social, his social media platform.

“I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia,” Trump wrote. “Jeanine was Assistant District Attorney for Westchester County, New York, and then went on to serve as County Judge,...

The Fox News To White House Pipeline: TV Personalities Who Joined The Trump Administration
Image
It’s no secret that Donald Trump watches Fox News. It’s also no secret that the president likes people who do well on TV — whether that means they aggressively defend him or just look look like they came from, as he says, “central casting.”

Trump’s TV Cabinet, as the Columbia Journalism Review calls it, consists of such familiar faces to Fox News viewers as Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth, Sean Duffy and many more.

What Media Matters calls the “revolving door” between the network and the Trump White House goes both ways, with the president’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump recently landing her own show on the network. Conversely, White House staffers, such as Sarah Huckabee Sanders, have become affiliated with Fox News after leaving public service.

Scroll through the photos below to see an extensive — but partial — list of those who’ve been through the pipeline between the network and the White House.

United Airlines CEO Warns Newark Airport Is ‘No Longer Safe’ Due To Staffing Shortage Amid Massive Doge Cuts To Faa
Image
Safety concerns at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey have resulted in the seventh straight day of delays, and a warning from the CEO of one of the biggest global airlines to avoid Newark at all costs.

Air traffic controller staffing problems paired with equipment and technology failures have caused numerous severe flight delays or cancellations and last Friday, CEO of United Airlines Scott Kirby declared, “[Newark Airport] cannot handle the number of planes that are scheduled to operate there in the weeks and months ahead.”

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump‘s administration, through Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency, has decreased the number of federal workers in nearly every agency, with cuts to the Faa raising substantial safety concerns. In February, 400 Faa staffers were laid off due to Doge cuts.

Kirby’s announcement followed a warning from a Newark air traffic controller that it is “not a safe situation...

Spanish Family Killed In Hudson River Helicopter Crash Was Celebrating Child’s Birthday
Image
A family of tourists celebrating a birthday was killed when the helicopter they were in crashed into the Hudson River in New York two weeks ago.

The family of five from Barcelona has been revealed to be Agustín Escobar, Mercè Camprubí Montal, and their three children, ages four, five and 11. The pilot on board was also killed. Escobar and Montal were both executives at the telecommunications company Siemens.

Video footage of the accident shows the helicopter breaking apart mid-air and crashing into the water, the rotor blades detaching and falling separately.

The helicopter, operated by tour company New York Helicopters, took off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport on the lower side of the island at roughly 3:00 p.m. Officials have said that the helicopter lost control shortly after it turned at the George Washington Bridge to traverse the New Jersey shoreline and the crash took place off the coast of Hoboken.

Elon Musk Says He’s Giving Out $1 Million Checks to ‘Get Attention’
Image
Green Bay, Wis. — Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, delivered $1 million checks to two of his supporters on Sunday evening at his town hall, saying the point of giving out these payments is to “get attention.”

“I should say that the reason for the checks is that it’s really just to get attention,” he said. “And somewhat inevitably, when I do these things, it causes the legacy media to kind of lose their minds.”

A $1 million check, for most people, would be a life-changing sum. For Musk, who is worth $343 billion,...

On Sunday, Mad Men actress January Jones ripped United Airlines for a major delay on her yet-to-depart flight.

In a screenshot posted to Instagram stories, Jones showed a page with flight-delay information detailing a 16-hour and 25-minute delay for her trip. Jones tagged United Airlines and wrote, “Do better.”

Jones followed up with a photo of herself on the airport floor, resting her head on a bag, writing, “Is there still a secretary of transportation? Can’t remember what’s left.”

Trump Is Leading an ‘All-Out Assault’ on the Climate
Image
It’s no secret that Donald Trump has zero interest in fighting climate change and enthusiastically supports the fossil fuel industry. Trump’s 2024 victory was expected to set the climate fight back, but in less than two months, his administration has already done irreparable harm to efforts to address climate change. This can primarily be seen in key agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency (Epa) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa).

For example, the Epa is currently working on rewriting its finding from 2009 that has been critical for regulating greenhouse gases.

Trump’s Cabinet Sure Seems Pissed About Elon Musk
Image
Donald Trump is — at least publicly — attempting to reign in Elon Musk and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) amid growing pushback from the public, Congress, and members of the president’s Cabinet.

On Thursday, Trump reportedly told his Cabinet members during a White House meeting that they would be in charge of the hiring and firing decisions within their agencies. The decision is a stark departure from how the administration has operated its first two months in office, giving Musk virtually unchecked authority to cut large swaths of federal departments and agencies.

Is Elon Musk Poised to Profit From New Layoffs at the Faa?

The Trump administration has begun mass layoffs at the Federal Aviation Administration (Faa), even as the agency reels from a fiery mid-air collision just outside Washington, D.C., a deadly runway crackup, and mysterious crashes from Pennsylvania to Alaska.

Air Traffic Control Offices Are in Chaos in Trump’s New Administration

Almost as soon as Donald Trump was sworn in late last month, the president, Elon Musk, and their allies embarked on a smash-and-grab-style blitz of purges and hard-right ideological enforcement that brought so much of the federal government to a screeching, tumultuous halt. Trump’s rule by self-inflicted chaos trickled down to the Federal Aviation Administration (Faa) in the Department of Transportation, where even air traffic controllers and airport control towers across the country have not been able to escape the torment of a hyper-maga onslaught.

Trump and Allies Default to Racist Explanation of Deadly Air Collision

Even as crews continued to retrieve bodies from the Potomac River following a midair collision Wednesday night between a commercial jet and a U.S. Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump sought to lay the blame for the tragedy on workplace diversity initiatives. His now-familiar refrain against diversity, equity, and inclusion policies — convenient for packaging racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic rhetoric into easily digested soundbites — had no evident connection to the accident, which officials have just begun to investigate. But that didn’t stop Trump from signing a...

DC Plane Collision: 67 Likely Dead; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy Believes Crash “Absolutely” Preventable – Update
Image
Updated with press conference details: At a press conference shortly after 9 a.m. Et, Wichita (Ks) Mayor Lily Wu said city officials were at the Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening when services were offered to family members of the doomed crash victims aboard a commercial flight that collided with a Blackhawk helicopter, killing all aboard both aircraft.

“Our community needs to come together to support the family members who have been impacted, to come together in honor of those individuals on that flight,” the mayor said.

Earlier this morning, Sean Duffy, the new transportation secretary, said the night was clear and that both the plane and the helicopter were flying in a standard flight pattern. Duffy indicated that “everything was standard in the lead-up to the crash,” and that he believed the disaster was “absolutely” preventable, echoing comments made earlier by President Donald Trump.

Everyone Aboard American Airlines Jet That Collided With Army Helicopter Feared Dead
Image
All 64 people aboard an American Airlines jet that collided with an Army helicopter were feared dead in what was likely to be the worst U.S. aviation disaster in almost a quarter-century, officials said Thursday.

At least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River after the helicopter apparently flew into the path of the jet late Wednesday as it was landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., officials said. The plane carried 60 passengers and four crew. Three soldiers were aboard the helicopter.

“We don’t believe there are any survivors,” said John Donnelly, the fire chief in the nation’s capital. “We are now at the point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation.”

The plane was found upside-down in three sections in waist-deep water, and first responders were searching an area of the Potomac River as far...

Trump has been on nomination tear since defeating Kamala Harris, tapping what seems like just about everyone in his orbit to join his administration — whether it be vaccine conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the nation’s health services,...

Gerry Turner Says Cancer Diagnosis Influenced Divorce From Theresa Nist, She Disagrees
Image
The first Golden Bachelor lead, Gerry Turner, appeared to find love on the show with contestant Theresa Nist, and the pair married in a televised special in January ... but if you kept tabs on the couple after they wed, you likely know that their marital bliss was quite short-lived, culminating in divorce in April.

Reality TV love matches can certainly last – Congressman Sean Duffy met his wife, Rachel, on MTV's The Real World: All Stars way back in 1998, and they're still together – but a large share of "showmances" don't end well.

Such was the case with Gerry and Theresa, and when they announced their split on Good Morning America and after the fact, their explanation basically boiled down to both parties' reluctance to uproot their lives and pick a place to live together.

In June, Gerry alluded to the "distance" issue in relation to his quickie marriage and divorce to Theresa,...

Sean Duffy, who went on to be a Fox News Business host, was nominated as the man in charge of The Department of Transportation under the new Trump administration. Duffy was a part of The Real World: Boston though he met his wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy (who was a contestant on The Real World: San Francisco) during their time together on Road Rules: All Stars on MTV. From ‘The Real World’ to Congress and Beyond: Five MTV Reality Stars Who Made It Big
Image
From the moment it went on the air in 1992 all the way to its final season in 2019, MTV’s groundbreaking reality show The Real World offered young people a simple proposition: We’ll give you 15 minutes of fame if you agree to live in a house with complete strangers and let us film you 24/7. Some of the more more memorable cast members were given a chance to extend their moment by appearing on the spinoff show The Real World/Road Rules Challenge (later shortened simply to The Challenge) where they competed...

Comparing Dr. Nick Riviera From ‘The Simpsons’ to Dr. Oz Isn’t Fair to Dr. Nick
Image
President-elect Donald Trump continues to announce comically terrible cabinet picks seemingly plucked out of half-remembered TV listings from 2013. Now he’s added Dr. Mehmet Oz to a lineup that already includes Fox News hosts Sean Duffy (formerly of The Real World) and Pete Hegseth, as well as WWE co-founder Linda McMahon.

Dr. Oz has been tapped to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a decision that’s led a lot of folks online to make jokes comparing Trump’s pick to another famous TV quack: Dr. Nick Riviera.

But that’s not exactly a fair comparison — to Dr. Nick, that is.

Sure, Dr. Nick’s not perfect. He lost his watch during an operation, dispenses opioids from a Pez dispenser, once stole cadavers in order to drive in the carpool lane and surgically swapped poor Mr. McGreg’s arm and leg.

But Dr. Nick may just be a better physician than Dr.

Jimmy Kimmel on Trump Choosing Former ‘Real World’ Star Sean Duffy as Transportation Head: ‘Maybe He’ll Pick One of the Teen Moms to Be Secretary of Labor!’
Image
Jimmy Kimmel commented on Donald Trump’s nomination of former Fox Business host Sean Duffy for secretary of transportation during his Tuesday night monologue, calling it “one of his least embarrassing picks.”

Though Duffy served as a U.S. representative for Wisconsin from 2011 to 2019, he started his career in the ’90s as a reality star, which Kimmel was quick to point out.

“Duffy served in Congress for eight years, but you know what he did before that? He was on ‘The Real World’ and ‘Road Rules’ on MTV,” Kimmel said. “[Trump] hired the guy from ‘Road Rules’ to be secretary of transportation, because of course he did — the word ‘road’ is right in there.”

Kimmel continued, “And that’s one of his least embarrassing picks. Maybe he’ll pick one of the Teen Moms to be secretary of labor!”

He cracked that Trump’s appointments are like a “season of ‘Dancing With the Stars....

Donald Trump Picks Dr. Oz to Lead Centers For Medicare And Medicaid Services
Image
President-elect Donald Trump, continuing his pattern of appointing TV figures to top positions in his next administration, said that he has nominated Dr. Mehmet Oz to serve as administrator of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services.

“He is an eminent physician, heart surgeon, inventor, and world-class communicator, who has been at the forefront of healthy living for decades,” Trump said in a statement.

He said that Oz would work closely with Robert Kennedy Jr., whom Trump nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

Trump said Oz “will also cut waste and fraud within our Country’s most expensive Government Agency, which is a third of our Nation’s Healthcare spend, and a quarter of our entire National Budget.”

Trump’s comment quickly raised concerns that cuts to Medicare and Medicaid may be considered in his administration.

Fetterman posted on X, “If Dr. oz is about protecting and preserving Medicare and Medicaid,...

MTV's The Real World Alum Sean Duffy Tapped For Trump's Transportation Secretary
Image
President-Elect Donald Trump's surprising cabinet picks have dominated the news cycle this week among the latest is reality TV star Sean Duffy, who came to fame on MTV's The Real World.

Although it is true that Sean Duffy was a cast member on The Real World, he has actually had an extensive career in politics in the intervening years.

Moreover, Trump famously appointed another reality television personality to his administration during his first term: Omarosa Manigault Newman, who was known for her stint on The Apprentice.

Omarosa worked on his campaign before his election, and in September 2016, she said of then-candidate Trump:

"Every critic, every detractor, will have to bow down to President Trump. It's everyone who's ever doubted Donald, whoever disagreed, whoever challenged him. It is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe."

Omarosa was named a White House staffer ahead of Trump's January 2017 inauguration,...

Trump Taps Former ‘Real World’ Cast Member as Transportation Secretary
Image
The first time American audiences met Sean Duffy, he was a twenty-something year old in the Nineties, grinning for The Real World Boston trailer and exuding bad “vibes” after inquiring about a hot tub. The reality television cast member later went on to serve in the House in 2011, representing Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District. The Republican and die-hard Trump supporter left congress in 2019, returning to the screen to co-host The Bottom Line on Fox Business.

On Monday, fellow reality TV personality and president-elect Donald Trump nominated Duffy to be the...

Fox Business Host Sean Duffy Tapped by Trump to Lead Department of Transportation and ‘Make Our Skies Safe Again’
Image
Sean Duffy is entering the real world of Washington D.C., with Donald Trump tapping the Fox Business host and former Representative of Wisconsin to be his nominee as his secretary of transportation. Duffy would replace Pete Buttigieg, who was selected by sitting President Biden to lead the department under his administration.

Duffy represents a double-dip into the bin of Fox personalities for Trump. The President-elect had previously announced that “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Pete Hegseth would be appointed secretary of defense. Unlike Hegseth, Duffy has legislative experience, having served as a U.S. Representative from 2011 to 2019. He resigned in 2019 for personal reasons, disclosing that his newborn daughter had been diagnosed with a heart defect.

Prior to his 2010 campaign for the House of Representatives, Duffy had been appointed the District Attorney of Ashland County in Wisconsin in 2002.

Duffy first entered the public eye in his late twenties, featured as...

Donald Trump Nominates Fox Business Host Sean Duffy As Secretary Of Transportation
Image
Donald Trump has gone to the Fox News well yet again, tapping the Fox Business host to be his nominee for secretary of transportation.

Duffy, a former congressman, is the co-host of Fox Business’ The Bottom Line and is a contributor to the news network. He also was a cast member on a season of The Real World.

Trump said in a statement that Duffy “will prioritize Excellence, Competence, Competitiveness and Beauty when rebuilding America’s highways, tunnels, bridges and airports. He will ensure our ports and dams serve our Economy without compromising our National Security, and he will make our skies safe again by eliminating Dei for pilots and air traffic controllers.”

Duffy is married to Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy. A co-host of that show, Pete Hegseth, was nominated by Trump last week to serve as secretary of defense.

Trump added, “The husband of a wonderful woman,...
