As 'Happy Gilmore 2's Scores on Streaming, the Movie's Writer Has an Update for a Potential Threequel
Image
We all fall for nostalgia bait but when it comes from Adam Sandler in the form of Happy Gilmore 2, it becomes even more special. The sequel to the 1996 cult-classic has proven successful for Netflix, where it debuted this week to high viewership numbers. The movie has the same flavor, charm, and gripping golf tournament that made the original film so lovable. So, can we get a Happy Gilmore 3? Well, the movie’s co-writer, Tim Herlihy, has a disappointing answer to that question.

Continuing their long-term partnership, Sandler and Herlihy co-wrote Happy Gilmore 2, bringing back many lovable characters and giving a nod to their previous work. While discussing the movie in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the co-writer revealed there hasn’t been talk of a sequel, “Not between me and Adam. I can say we haven’t had one discussion about it,” he revealed. He further explained,...

'Happy Gilmore 2's Adam Sandler Explains That Controversial Character Death
Image
Happy Gilmore 2 hit Netflix last week, and although the film has been a major hit for the streamer in the viewership column, it makes some controversial decisions with the story. Easily the most talked-about plot point is the death of Virginia (Julie Bowen), which happens between films but is shown early in the sequel. Virginia died after being hit with a golf ball via an errant shot from Happy (Adam Sandler).

Sandler recently caught up with The Hollywood Reporter about the decision to kill Bowen’s Virginia. Before going into details about Happy Gilmore 2, Sandler praised Bowen’s work as a professional, “We love Julie. She’s just a great vibe and a great person. We love working with her, and we did the first one and Hubie Halloween.” Sandler then explained the decision to kill Virginia, saying, “We just knew we needed Happy to have to overcome something in this story.

'Happy Gilmore' Fans Say Goodbye to the Original Classic While the Sequel Dominates Netflix
Image
Adam Sandlerwas a staple of 90s and early 2000s comedy, and now, one of his most iconic films has a sequel out. The 1996 movie Happy Gilmore celebrated Happy (Sandler), a hockey player turned professional golfer whose unconventional approach to the sport did not make him allies. Especially with Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald). The sequel, which was released in July 2025, comes out nearly 30 years later, and now if you're trying to watch the two back to back, you only have until the end of July to have that double feature on Netflix.

The sequel from director Kyle Newacheck is an emotional return to the character; the original film was directed by Dennis Dugan. But even 30 years later, the character of Happy Gilmore is someone who fans love for a reason. He loves fiercely, isn't ashamed of who he is, and will make sure that his skill as a golfer is loved and appreciated.

Happy Gilmore 2: Who Is The Richest Cast Member? Top 6 Wealthiest Stars Ranked – From Adam Sandler To Christopher McDonald

Happy Gilmore 2 Cast Net Worth: Adam Sandler to Bad Bunny, Who’s the Richest of Them All? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

29 years later, Adam Sandler is back as Happy in the sequel to 1996’s Happy Gilmore 2. In this movie, Happy is a decorated retired golfer after winning his first Tour Championship, who lives with his four sons and a daughter. However, when things get tough, he gets lured back into golf. But this time, he is dedicated and motivated to revive the sport. While the Og movie became a cult classic over the years despite all the mixed reviews from critics, the sequel is somewhat a good watch if you want something lighthearted, comedic, and nostalgic.

However, the Netflix movie also received mixed reviews on X (previously known as Twitter), as many viewers didn’t like how the makers played with nostalgia and recycled jokes. But the film featured a stellar cast,...

Happy Gilmore 2 Reveals Why Allen Covert's Caddie Otto Is Missing from the Sequel
Image
Happy Gilmore 2 officially revealed that Happy has a new caddie, replacing Allen Covert's Otto from the first movie. The sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 film brought back many returning characters to deliver nostalgia to longtime fans. Aside from Sandler, who is leading the charge as the titular character in the Netflix movie, the long list of Happy Gilmore 2's cast includes Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, Ben Stiller as Hal L., and Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson. However, one prominent absence is Allen Covert as Otto.

In Happy Gilmore, Otto is a homeless man who eventually becomes Happy's best friend and caddie on the tour. A caddie accompanies a golfer and provides practical support and strategic guidance. Otto was instrumental in helping Happy push through with the tour with his comedic relief and hilarious banter with Sandler's character. This is why it's...

Happy Gilmore 2 Cast Salary Breakdown: How Much Did Adam Sandler and the Others Make?
Image
‘Happy Gilmore 2’ had a reported budget of around $30-40 million, and it looks like the extensive cast was paid handsomely for their contributions to the sequel.

Ofcourse, Adam Sandler is back as the boorish golf player in Kyle Newacheck’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ The last time we saw the character was all the way back in 1996 when the sports comedy ended with Happy defeating Shooter McGavin in the Tour Championship and finally earning the respect he always craved.

Now, nearly three decades later, Sandler is back in ‘Happy Gilmore 2’, but this time with a tragic story that makes him give up on his successful golfing career. While the Og film became somewhat of a cult classic over the years, the sequel is also a great watch if you’re looking for something light-hearted, despite the mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a score of 65%, just two...

Happy Gilmore 2 review | A one-joke wonder
Image
Adam Sandler’s hapless golfer is back for more in a long overdue sequel. Here’s our Happy Gilmore 2 review.

Happy Gilmore, director Dennis Dugan’s 1996 sports comedy, is about as classic an Adam Sandler film as you can get. Sandler played an aspiring hockey player who turned to golf when the former didn’t work out. He found himself to have an unusual talent for the sport, eventually leading him to win the US Open.

Over the years, fans have been asking for a sequel but one never materialised. Until now, thanks to Netflix.

Happy Gilmore 2 finds Happy picking up the golf club after leaving the sport behind years earlier. After some practicing and getting back in the game, Happy finds himself rooting for old-school golf as an obnoxious CEO of a new golf tournament (played by Benny Safdie) challenges him to a high stakes game.

Adam Sandler Returns to the Green in Happy Gilmore 2
Image
Adam Sandler reprises his role as the volatile hockey player-turned-golfer in Happy Gilmore 2, a sequel that arrives nearly three decades after the original film established itself as a cultural touchstone. The 1996 movie changed the perception of golf for a generation, transforming it from a staid sport into a chaotic battleground and cementing Sandler’s comedic formula of the lovable, blue-collar man-child. Produced by Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions for Netflix, the film marks the first direct sequel to any of Sandler’s classic 1990s comedies, a notable decision for an actor who, for years, dismissed the idea. The sequel finds its purpose not in simple repetition, but in exploring the character through the lens of aging, fatherhood, and legacy, themes that align with Sandler’s own career evolution into more dramatic roles.

A New Purpose on the Fairway

The film picks up with Happy Gilmore long retired from the professional golf tour.

Happy Gilmore 2 Review: The Comedy Sequel Takes A Big Swing But Completely Whiffs It
Image
"Happy Gilmore" is one of those enduring comedies that has stood the test of time. While it may not have been a massive blockbuster hit at the box office, it found quite an audience on home video, especially as Adam Sandler's star continued to rise with the likes of his best comedies like "The Wedding Singer" and "Big Daddy." It's a simple, grounded sports comedy that was the perfect outlet for Sandler's unique comedic sensibilities, letting him be both charming and hilariously angry while shaking up the classic institution of golf. Following in the footsteps of movies like "Caddyshack" and "National Lampoon's Animal House," it was the perfect successor in the slobs vs snobs comedic formula that frequently worked so well.

When it comes to "Happy Gilmore 2," Netflix's latest comedic collaboration with "SNL" sensation Adam Sandler, you'd be better off taking a cue from Happy's golf rival...

‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Review: Adam Sandler’s Unpredictable Golfer Takes Nostalgia in a Different Direction
Image
It’s no surprise that Kyle Newacheck’s much-anticipated sequel to Dennis Dugan’s early Adam Sandler comedy classic “Happy Gilmore” opens on something of a down beat. After all, every good comeback story — a designation by which “Happy Gilmore 2” definitely qualifies — has to find our hero at some sort of crossroads, but damn if the film doesn’t kick off with a pretty audacious bummer. It’s not to be spoiled here, but believe us, Happy (Sandler) really needs a win, and there’s something impressive about Sandler and Tim Herlihy’s script using that as a jumping-off point.

The film’s opening moments zip through the highs and lows of Happy’s life since we last left him, from his continued success in both golf and sponsorship opportunities (that he started stumping for Trojan condoms after having four sons in a row with his wife is a...

Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore Salary: It’s Not Even Close to His Highest Hollywood Paycheck

Adam Sandler only made $2 million for Happy Gilmore (via Parade)! But today, that figure looks laughable compared to what he earns as one of Hollywood’s top-paid actors. In 2023, Sandler raked in $73 million, topping Forbes’ list of highest-paid performers, even beating big stars like Margot Robbie and Tom Cruise (via The Guardian).

Happy Gilmore, directed by Dennis Dugan, featured the actor as a failed hockey player who turns into a chaotic golf pro. The movie became a comedy classic and has now spawned a sequel on Netflix, but at the time, it wasn’t his biggest financial win.

I Was the Golf Consultant on ‘Happy Gilmore’
Image
Happy Gilmore may be back on the golf course this week with the release of Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, but the man responsible for teaching him the game won’t be joining him.

No, I’m not talking about Chubbs (Rip Carl Weathers). I mean pro golfer Mark Lye.

I recently spoke with Lye about what it was like to serve as the golf consultant on the original film. During our interview, he also answered a question I’ve been dying to know the answer to ever since the iconic movie’s release in 1996: Is Happy’s putter regulation?

How did you become involved in Happy Gilmore?

I happened to know the family of the producer. His name is Robert Simonds Jr., and his dad, Robert Simonds Sr., and I were close friends. He told me Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy were doing a movie, and they wanted...

Adam Sandler Wants to Make 'Billy Madison 2' With Netflix: "Let's Write It Tonight!"
Image
The release of the long-awaited sequel to the Adam Sandler comedy classic Happy Gilmore is now imminent, with the follow-up coming as part of Sandler’s mega eight-movie deal with Netflix. Now that Happy is returning to tee up, fans cannot help but wonder what other Sandler classics could get a sequel thanks to the streamer. Well, the beloved comedian has now responded with excitement to a certain suggestion...

Speaking to Variety at the premiere of Happy Gilmore 2, which is due to land on Netflix later this week on July 25, Sandler was asked whether he would be interested in bringing back Billy Madison for another adventure. By far one of his most beloved comedies, the first Billy Madison was released back in 1995 and follows Sandler as the titular 27-year-old slacker who, to inherit his father’s fortune, must go back to school and complete grades one to twelve all on his own.

‘Happy Gilmore’: THR’s 1996 Review
Image
On February 16, 1996, Universal Pictures introduced Happy Gilmore to audiences. The Adam Sandler starrer went on to gross $41 million and became a cable TV perennial enroute to its belated Netflix sequel in 2025. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:

After his lame, infantile Billy Madison, hopes weren’t exactly high for Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore, which makes the end result all the more satisfying. Sandler’s second effort, about a hot-tempered hockey player who swaps his slap shot for long drives and earns himself a berth on the pro golf tour, is amicable entertainment.

A funny golf flick worthy of comparison with Caddyshack, the Universal release packs a goofy charm and should be on course to hit the boxoffice green as long as potential fans don’t view Sandler’s previous outing as too much of a handicap.

The SNL alumnus, who cowrote the script with longtime collaborator Tim Herlihy,...

Things That Better Be in Happy Gilmore 2
Image
Adam Sandler is dusting off the hockey stick putter and coming back in the spotlight in Happy Gilmore 2. Nearly 30 years later, Sandler returns as the hot-headed hockey player-turned-golfing legend, but now a bit older.

The sequel brings back the rage and ridiculousness that made the 1996 original a classic comedy. Happy is now a father and a husband. He’s still competing in the wide world of golf now, for his daughter’s ballet school. In an interview with Good Morning America (via ABC News), Sandler joked about returning to the role as an old man.

He’s older. He’s a little thicker, as you can tell from one of these camera angles. But Happy Gilmore’s life isn’t perfect right now at the beginning of the movie. And, he’s a family man and he’s gettin’ back into his golf game.

The Adam Sandler Sequel Fans Have Been Waiting 12 Years for Finally Gets an Exciting Update
Image
Adam Sandler fans are likely gearing up for Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to 1996’s Happy Gilmore, but another potential sequel starring the comedian may be on the horizon. Sandler’s films Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2, released in 2010 and 2013, respectively, may not have been well-received by critics, but fans have been wondering if a threequel would ever happen.

The movies, headed up by Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, and Maria Bello, have remained a success more than a decade after being released, with the first one recently trending on streaming. Now, per The Direct,Kevin James says not all hope is lost on a third Grown Ups movie.

Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
Carl Weathers was tapped to return as Chubbs for Happy Gilmore 2 before 2024 death
Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)
Just tap it in…We’re just one week away from the release of Happy Gilmore 2, bringing everyone’s favorite short-tempered golfer back to the green. While we can expect much of the same style of humor and plenty of callbacks, there had to be a number of alterations, a key one of which centers around Chubbs, played by Carl Weathers, who passed away in 2024 just a few months before Happy Gilmore 2 was confirmed. So what was the plan for Chubbs?

Adam Sandler recently sat down with Collider to discuss how the death of Carl Weathers impacted the development of the Happy Gilmore 2 script. “We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was. We made a...

“We Had A Painful Change”: Happy Gilmore 2’s Original Carl Weathers Plan Addressed By Adam Sandler
Image
Adam Sandler reveals he had to make some tough changes to Happy Gilmore 2 after the death of Carl Weathers. It's been nearly 30 years since Sandler last portrayed the titular Bruins jersey-wearing golfer. While many have waited a long time for Happy Gilmore 2, it will be bittersweet to see Happy without his mentor.

In 1996's Happy Gilmore, Weathers played Derick "Chubbs" Peterson, a former professional golfer who sports a wooden hand after losing his to an alligator. Chubbs becomes Happy's mentor and coaches him to greatness. Unfortunately, Weathers died in February 2024.

Speaking with Collider, Sandler revealed that Weathers had a "massive part" in the sequel, and his death forced the comedian to make several changes to the story.

“We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part. I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away. We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff,...

Happy Gilmore 2 Director Wants To Do A Sequel To Adam Sandler's $58M Box Office Disappointment
Image
The director of Happy Gilmore 2 has revealed what Adam Sandler movie he would like to make a sequel to next. Although he is best known for feature-length comedies, Sandler got his start as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, which was a stint that ran from 1990 to 1995.

Two early Adam Sandler movies were his key to finding big screen success. The first was 1995's Billy Madison, in which he played a man who has 24 weeks to graduate grades 1 through 12, and the second was 1996's Happy Gilmore, in which he played a vulgar hockey player who becomes a golf sensation.

From there, he went on to star in a number of prominent movies, including the rom-coms 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer, the dramas Uncut Gems and Hustle, and the Netflix comedies Murder Mystery, Murder Mystery 2, Hubie Halloween, and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

Grown Ups 2 (2013) Movie Ending Explained: Is Roxanne cheating on Lenny?
Image
In Grown Ups 2 (2013), Adam Sandler reunites with his old buddies—Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade—for another chaotic summer of slapstick humor and small-town shenanigans. Directed by Dennis Dugan, this sequel picks up three years after the events of Grown Ups (2010), where Lenny Feder (Sandler) and his childhood friends reconnect during a funeral weekend and rediscover their youth. The second installment ditches the vacation-home setting and brings the gang to Lenny’s hometown of Stanton, where they navigate fatherhood, awkward confrontations, and outlandish encounters—all leading up to an over-the-top 80s-themed party.

While Grown Ups 2 was panned by critics for its lowbrow humor and thin plot, it stands as a classic example of the 2010s Adam Sandler comedy era. A time when Sandler, through his Happy Madison productions, churned out a string of goofy, feel-good ensemble comedies that didn’t always age well but continue to find life in rewatch culture.

Happy Gilmore 2 Star Was Convinced They Would Be Replaced In Adam Sandler Sequel: “Who Am I Supposed To Be?”
Image
One Happy Gilmore 2 star was convinced they would be replaced in the upcoming sequel. The original comedy, directed by Dennis Dugan, premiered in 1996 and garnered a loyal fandom.

Starring Adam Sandler, it explores an aspiring professional hockey player who discovers he is talented at golf, and could make money from it. Along with Sandler, the cast includes Carl Weathers, Frances Bay, Julie Bowen, and Christopher McDonald. Happy Gilmore 2 will release on Netflix on July 25, and Sandler and many other stars have returned.

Julie Bowen recently appeared on the Inside of Youwith Michael Rosenbaum podcast, and discussed reprising her role in Happy Gilmore 2. Bowen revealed that she was convinced the sequel would not include her and added that Happy should have “a younger woman.”

Later in the episode, Bowen notes that she does not have as much screentime in Happy Gilmore 2 as in the first film, although...

'I Didn't Think They'd Bring Me Back': Happy Gilmore Star Feared Getting the Top Gun: Maverick Treatment With Netflix Sequel
Image
Julie Bowen won two Emmy Awards for playing Claire Dunphy on ABC’s long-running sitcom Modern Family, but for many, she will always be Virginia Venit, Adam Sandler’s love interest in 1996’s Happy Gilmore. But, per Entertainment Weekly, Bowen, who starred in the Peacock series Hysteria! in 2024, thought she wouldn’t get the call for the Happy Gilmore sequel.

Happy Gilmore 2 will reunite Sandler and Bowen when it hits Netflix on July 25. Bowen, in an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of Youpodcast, confessed that she thought she’d be replaced by a younger actress for the sequel. “I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all. I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2,” Bowen said.

Adam Sandler's $272 Million Comedy He Called "A Big Part of My Life" Is a Sleeper Hit on Streaming in America
Image
As Adam Sandler prepares to tee off again in Happy Gilmore 2, another one of his most beloved box office hits has quietly shot back up the leader board — this time, on Netflix. Grown Ups, the 2010 reunion comedy featuring Sandler and a murderers' row of stand-up comedy royalty, is currently sitting at #9 on Netflix in the U.S., proving there’s still a big audience for fart jokes, friendship, and lakeside shenanigans.

And that’s despite what critics said back in the day. Rotten Tomatoes may have handed it a brutal 10% approval rating, but audiences never cared. The original film brought in over $272 million at the global box office on a $75 million budget — and its 2013 sequel did nearly as well, pulling in $247 million. That’s not just a hit. That’s a franchise with serious legs (even if one of those legs just tripped on a banana peel). Sandler told...

Julie Bowen thought Happy Gilmore 2 would swing for a younger actress to be her replacement in the sequel
Adam Sandler
Later this month, Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems) and Julie Bowen (Modern Family) will return to the links for Happy Gilmore 2, the hotly anticipated sequel to the duo’s 1996 comedy about a hockey player with anger management issues taking up golf to get his grandmother’s house back. Bowen played PGA rep Virginia Venit in the original, who acts as Happy’s (Sandler) guide to the organization and how to keep himself from getting kicked off the tour. Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast, Julie Bowen said she thought she’d get replaced with a younger actress for Happy Gilmore 2, though her fears were unfounded.

“I didn’t think they’d bring me back at all,” Bowen said during the podcast interview. “I mean, who am I supposed to be? He’s got to have a younger woman in this one.”

Image
Another Adam Sandler sports comedy is heading to Hulu. Following Happy Gilmore's addition to the streamer's library earlier this month, The Longest Yard will make its way onto the platform at the top of next month.

Beginning July 1, The Longest Yard will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2005, the Peter Segal-directed sports comedy stars Sandler as Paul "Wrecking" Crewe, a washed-up former professional football quarterback who goes to prison and is forced to assemble a team to play against the guards. The movie was a remake of the 1974 movie of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, who appears in the new version as Nate Scarborough, a former college football star who agrees to coach the prisoners' team. Chris Rock, James Cromwell, Nelly, William Fichtner, David Patrick Kelly, Tracy Morgan, and Cloris Leachman also appear in supporting roles.

Adam Sandler is back on the green in the newly released poster for Happy Gilmore 2 from Netflix
Image
Line up your shot, because Netflix has just released the new one-sheet for this summer’s Happy Gilmore 2.

It’s been almost 30 years since Happy Gilmore’s unforgettable antics at the Tour Championship in 1996, including doing the bull dance, fighting with Bob Barker and sinking a seemingly impossible putt, thanks to his instructor Chubbs. The original Happy Gilmore is such a beloved film from the 90s, and Adam Sandler is definitely feeling the pressure for the sequel to live up to the first movie. “It’s on your mind,” Sandler said. “We’ve got a lot of good stuff, and we just want to make sure that it all comes together and keeps it going from start to finish, and that’s the goal. We’ll see. We’re definitely nervous, but we feel some sort of confidence.“

Ahead of Happy Gilmore 2, Adam Sandler's First Comedy Sequel Is Coming to Netflix
Image
Adam Sandler is set to take the golf course once again as Happy Gilmore 2 debuts this summer, nearly three decades after the beloved original. While fans await the Happy Gilmore follow-up to tee off on Netflix, another comedy sequel featuring Sandler swings its way to the streaming giant.

Netflix has confirmed that Sandler's 2013 film, Grown Ups 2, is coming to its platform on Jul. 1, one of several new titles coming to the streamer to start next month. The film has largely been available for rental or purchase on multiple platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV and YouTube.

Grown Ups 2 Isn't the Most Mature Film

Directed by Sandler's long-time collaborator and Happy Gilmore helmer Dennis Dugan, Grown Ups 2 is a follow-up to the 2010 original, which was a box office smash despite being panned by critics (10% on Rotten Tomatoes). The first comedy sequel of Sandler's career, Grown Ups 2...

I’m Excited for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ but Adam Sandler May Be Forgetting What Made the Original So Good
Image
While critics may raise their eyebrows at Happy Gilmore returning for another adventure, that might not be the case with fans. I am excited to see Adam Sandler back in the golf field with his over-the-top antics. Netflix released the trailer of Happy Gilmore 2 at a Tudum presentation as a surprise for fans. As much as I am excited for the film, there’s one thing bugging me about the film’s trailer.

The trailer is set as a tribute to the previous film, filled with easter eggs from the 1996 outing. What worries me is that the film would end up as fan service rather than an original film like its predecessor. Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Blake Clark, and Ben Stiller are returning for the sequel.

Casi 30 años después, Netflix resucita la comedia golfística. © Netflix
