SAG-AFTRA has defeated a series of lawsuits over its Covid safety guidelines outlining terms to return to work, which for a time mandated vaccination against the virus.

Dorian Kingi, a stuntman with credits on dozens of films who declined to get vaccinated due to his faith and other “science, political and philosophical reasoning,” brought in Los Angeles Superior Court in December one of 40 lawsuits against SAG-AFTRA challenging the agreement, implemented in September 2020. For nearly three years, it allowed studios to require union members to be vaccinated and get tested for the virus, as well as mask and quarantine in certain circumstances. He and others alleged that they faced difficulties getting work because they were discriminated against for not being vaccinated.

Sulayman Tahir’s “Peripheral” and Coke Daniels’ “The Waterboyz” were among the winners of this year’s Best of ABFF Awards, presented Saturday at the American Black Film Festival.

Hosted by Dondré Whitfield, the festival presented winners in the official film selection categories: narrative and documentary features, series and the HBO Short Film Award showcase. This marks Dunbar’s first acting job since he was terminated from 9-1-1 in 2021 over not complying with the studio’s Covid vaccine mandate after his requests for a medical and religious exemptions were rejected. The actor subsequently filed a $1M lawsuit against Disney over the firing, with the case now headed to trial.

In a surprise announcement, Deadline reports that Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner Elgin James is developing a new Prison Break project for Hulu. Written and executive-produced by James through his Sierra Drive studio, the revised version marks a new chapter of the incarceration thriller.

Elgin is keeping details about the new Prison Break project in solitary. However, Deadline says, “it is not expected to involve the characters who were at the center of the original series and its followups on Fox.” The original Prison Break debuted in 2005, following Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) as two brothers hatching a plan to escape Fox River State Penitentiary. With Lincoln heading for Death Row, it’s only a matter of time before push comes to shove, and the brothers must enact their plan or face the consequences of their actions.

On Thursday (November 2), it was revealed that Hulu is in the early development stages of reviving the fan-favorite Fox drama, Deadline reports.

The upcoming reboot will be written and executive produced by Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer and showrunner Elgin James.

The original series, which ran for five seasons between 2005 and 2017, followed Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), who makes it his mission to prove that his convicted brother Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) is innocent, hatching a plan to save him from death row and escape him from prison.

The show also starred Amaury Nolasco, Sarah Wayne Callies, Paul Adelstein, Rockmond Dunbar, Inbar Lavi, Mark Feuerstein, Robert Knepper, and Augustus Prew.

The reboot is described as a new installment set in the Prison Break world.

While details are being kept under wraps, it has been reported that two leads from the original series are not expected to return.

Apple Studios might have discriminated against Brent Sexton when it pulled an offer for him to star in Manhunt after he refused the Covid-19 vaccine due to potential health complications, a judge has ruled.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Linfield declined Apple’s move to dismiss the lawsuit on free speech grounds, finding that the company’s mandatory vaccination policy may have been unconstitutional. The order issued on Oct. 19 marks one of the few rulings advancing a lawsuit from an actor who took issue with a studio’s refusal to provide accommodations for refusing to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.

“There is a significant difference between the government using its police power to require vaccinations and a company implementing a policy that required vaccinations (without any alternative, and of its own volition) as a condition of employment,” stated the order.

SAG-AFTRA members re-elected Fran Drescher as their president with a landslide victory Friday. It’s a firm nod of confidence in “The Nanny” star as the actors union’s strike hit 56 days.

Drescher, 65, won a second term with 81.4% of the vote while beating Maya Gilbert-Dunbar, actress and the wife of “9-1-1” star Rockmond Dunbar. Gilbert-Dunbar took 18.6% of the vote.

In the race for secretary-treasurer, Joely Fisher received 70.3% while her opponent, Peter Antico, had 29.7%.

“These are dynamic times,” Drescher said in a statement. “And as one member body, we will weather the storms, stand on our principles and make sure our major contributions to this collaborative art form shall never again be diminished but rather be exalted.

SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer candidate Pete Antico has messaged union members in an attempt to drum up plaintiffs in a potential lawsuit against the labor organization.

Antico, who is aligned with an independent slate of candidates that is challenging Fran Drescher’s Unity ticket, on Thursday sent union members an election campaign message informing them of potential pending litigation against SAG-AFTRA. “Sag-Aftra union members across the country discriminated against and harmed by Sag-Aftra’s Return to Work Agreement are now taking matters into their own hands and are filing a lawsuit against the union to stop the madness,” Antico wrote in the message. The email exhorted members to read a letter from Protection of the Educational Rights of Kids (Perk), a 501(c)3 nonprofit that supported General Hospital star Ingo Rademacher’s Covid-19 vaccine lawsuit against ABC. (An L.A. Superior Court Judge ruled on behalf of ABC in the suit in June.

ESPN host Sage Steele is exiting the channel after settling her lawsuit with the sports media giant.

“ESPN and Sage Steele have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank her for her many contributions over the years,” an ESPN spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Having successfully settled my case with ESPN/Disney, I have decided to leave so I can exercise my first amendment rights more freely,” Steele shared on X/Twitter. “I am grateful for so many wonderful experiences over the past 16 years and am excited for my next chapter!”

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Steele, an anchor on SportsCenter and a former host of NBA Countdown, sued ESPN and its owner The Walt Disney Co. last year for allegedly violating her free speech rights in retaliation for widely criticized comments she made on a podcast regarding the company’s Covid-19 vaccine mandate and for comments about former President Barack Obama.

Although SAG-AFTRA’s leading political factions have united around the reelection of President Fran Drescher and Secretary-Treasurer Joely Fisher, they’re not running unopposed in the guild’s upcoming election. Independent candidate Maya Gilbert-Dunbar will face off against Drescher and indie candidate Peter Antico will challenge Fisher, all four of whom have now officially qualified to appear on the ballot.

It’s already been a contentious election, with Drescher exchanging angry emails with Gilbert-Dunbar and Antico, who have accused her of not doing enough to protect the rights of members who refused to be vaccinated during the Covid pandemic, even though she was the leading voice among union leaders against the vaccination mandates.

Their candidate statements, which will appear on the ballots, went to press before the guild launched its strike July 14.

A slate of candidates challenging Fran Drescher’s Unity ticket is beginning to take shape prior to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA election.

On Tuesday night a group labeling itself a coalition of independents announced that candidates including Rob Schneider (Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo), Elliott Gould (Ocean’s Eleven), Dr. Drew (Celebrity Rehab), Diane Ladd (Chinatown), Jamie Ann Allman (Candy), Louis Herthum (The Peripheral), Robert Davi (Die Hard), Brent Sexton (Justified), Michelle Jubilee (1923), DaJuan Johnson (Bosch) and Veronica Bruce (Empire) would all run as for seats on the SAG-AFTRA National Board.

Further, Sons of Anarchy and 9-1-1 star Rockmond Dunbar will run for the position of Los Angeles Local vice president as well. The group will join previously announced candidates Maya Gilbert-Dunbar (the Banshee actor who is married to Rockmond), running for union president, and Peter Antico (Outlaw Johnny Black), aiming for secretary-treasurer.

ABC has defeated a lawsuit from Ingo Rademacher over his dismissal from General Hospital for refusing to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

In December 2021, the actor sued the network, claiming it refused to accommodate his religious objections. In an order granting summary judgment, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Goorvitch sided with ABC, which argued that Rademacher’s opposition to the vaccine was grounded in health reasons rather than his religious beliefs. Goorvitch had taken dueling motions under submission after an April 5 hearing and on Monday issued a brief order granting Disney’s and denying Rademacher’s but has not yet issued a detailed ruling.

ABC was among several studios that implemented vaccine mandates. The return-to-work protocols agreed upon by Hollywood’s guilds and studios said that vaccines could be required for those working in “Zone A” of a production — typically a project’s main actors as well as key crewmembers...

There's no show quite like Ryan Murphy's Fox procedural "9-1-1." On the surface, it has a lot in common with other shows about doctors, cops, and firefighters. Each episode sees the crew tackling whatever emergencies come their way that day. But "9-1-1" traffics very heavily in two narrative strategies: metaphor and exaggeration. Many episodes tackle a specific topic, whether it be the idea of superstition or the feeling of being under pressure, and tie everything in that episode to the titular concept.

When "9-1-1" episodes are not tied together in a beautiful thematic bow, they tend to depict the most extreme emergencies imaginable, hence the exaggeration. The Los Angeles depicted in the series has experienced every possible disaster under the sun, including tsunamis, earthquakes, blackouts, cyber-attacks, plane crashes, explosions, sharks on the freeway, and escaped zoo animals. Ryan Murphy's Fox procedural "9-1-1" is billed as a show about heroes. More specifically, the show follows first responders — firefighters, 911 operators, and cops on the front lines of disasters. As such, the audience is always encouraged to root for the main characters as they face danger and emotional devastation to get the job done. That doesn't mean that every character in the show is endlessly lovable, of course. These first responders all have their demons to contend with — demons they must put aside while in the field.

If "9-1-1" were filled with totally unlikable characters, it wouldn't work. This is a show about selfless people who run toward the fire, not away from it.
