Studio 100 International will introduce a spin-off film focused on two ants fans love from the beloved “Maya the Bee” series. Called “Arnie & Barney,” the movie will tell the story of the title characters who find themselves embarking on an unexpected heroic journey. It is scheduled for release in 2026.
The story follows Arnie and Barney, recurring ants from “Maya the Bee” known for their funny misadventures. During a severe drought, the bumbling duo uncover a water racket plot and team up with a mysterious superhero mosquito. Together they set out to save their meadow home from the dangerous drought conditions.
Producer Thorsten Wegener of Studio 100 International said the film holds special meaning. “It’s about how unlikely heroes can rise to challenges,” he explained. With humor and adventure, the movie aims to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.

Studio 100 Intl. is to produce animated adventure “Arnie & Barney,” a spin-off from the hit “Maya the Bee” franchise, with delivery planned for the first quarter 2026. Studio 100 Film is handling global sales and will present the project at AFM in Las Vegas. Variety debuts the teaser below.
“Arnie & Barney” brings ants Arnie and Barney, recurring characters from “Maya the Bee,” to the forefront. The film will deliver “a blend of action, humor, friendship and heroism,” Studio 100 Intl. said.
“Arnie & Barney” follows a platoon of ants during a severe drought, who set out to save their community, but the “hilariously inept” Arnie and Barney – who are not cut out for heroics – decide to tackle the problem themselves. Their bumbling efforts lead them to uncover a shady water racket and team up with a secretive superhero mosquito. In a series of comical mishaps, they inadvertently save the meadow and become the most unlikely heroes of all.

Studiocanal has agreed to distribute Maya the Bee Movie, the 3D animated feature adapted from the ABC TV series, in Australian and New Zealand cinemas. The Australian-German co-production from Buzz Studios will open on Saturday November 1 on more than 100 screens in Oz and on 25 prints in New Zealand, playing two sessions a day for two weekends.
