To Catch a Killer takes us into a police investigation with a lot of rhythm and intrigue… at the beginning. Then the plot goes to the easy resolution.
It wrecks its initial promise.
To Catch a Killer (2023) Movie Review
A good leading duo, well set in a scary Baltimore, with some dizzying first scenes that promise something in the purest David Fincher style… but no, neither the bad guy has the strength of Kevin Spacey nor does the development contain so many elements and the force is quickly lost, despite some sequences with the merit of striving to maintain a tension that, according to the script, wants to be consistent with what a realistic criminal investigation would be.
But it isn’t either, and the fiction is too present to go unnoticed, the characters don’t end up fascinating within their fictional scope, nor do they end up being as...

"I don't think he's looking for destruction, I think he's looking for relief." Wow this is a must watch trailer. Vertical Ent. has revealed an official trailer for To Catch a Killer, another crime thriller to continue with the trend of murder films / series being released by the dozen these days. This will be opening nationwide in theaters in April. It borrows the very same title ("To Catch a Killer") from a popular two-part TV movie from 1992, also about a murder investigation, starring Brian Dennehy and Michael Riley. In this new film, set in Baltimore, a talented but troubled police officer (played by Shailene Woodley) is recruited by the FBI's chief investigator to help profile and track down an elusive mass murderer. In addition to Woodley, the film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Jovan Adepo, Ralph Ineson, Rosemary Dunsmore, Jason Cavalier, and Mark Camacho. This looks way better than expected, almost like a proper,...

Sometimes it seems like the entirety of "Chucky" season 2 was just one, giant, collective hallucination by the fans. The season kicked off with a Halloween special, threw the main tweens into Catholic school for some fun (with a weirdly hot priest played by Devon Sawa), and gave Jennifer Tilly a "Bound" reunion/solo episode that allowed her to remind the world why she's an Academy Award-nominated performer. Fiona Dourif has continued a masterful reign at playing multiple characters inhabiting her character Nica Pierce's body, including often having to imitate the voice of Charles Lee Ray/Chucky, who has been played by her father, Brad Dourif, for nearly three-and-a-half decades.
There have been exploding members of the clergy, live-action Glen and Glenda played by Lachlan Watson ("The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"), an "Apocalypse Now" era Marlon Brando-impersonating Chucky doll, a pacifist Chucky doll, and the unforgettable "Buff Chuck." It was...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Chucky Actually,” the Season 2 finale of “Chucky” on Syfy and USA Network.
‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, Chucky was using a chainsaw to bisect the mayor right through her blouse.
In the Season 2 finale of “Chucky,” the joyfully murderous doll chose Christmas Eve to reveal he wasn’t dead after the exorcism in last week’s penultimate episode. But did anyone really believe the Power of Christ would be that compelling to him?
After transferring himself into a secret Good Guy doll hidden by his now-dead accomplice Dr. Mixter (Rosemary Dunsmore), Chucky finally made his move on those meddling kids Jake (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Björgvin Arnarson) and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind).
While Chucky is most associated with Halloween, which is where Season 2 began, creator Don Mancini seized the chance to bookend the season with some Yuletide cheer from the world’s worst toy.

This is it. The major death that ended last week’s episode of Don Mancini’s “Chucky” opened the floodgates, setting the stage for an epic conclusion to season two. All bets are off in the season’s penultimate episode, “Goin’ to the Chapel.” Reunions, revelations, and shocking deaths ensue when converging paths lead to an explosive final confrontation.
There’s a sense of finality to episode seven as nearly every character has reached their breaking point. Andy (Alex Vincent), Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) want to put an end to Chucky’s murder streak once and for all. So do Kyle (Christine Elise) and Nica (Fiona Dourif), but not before they purge Chucky Prime from Nica’s body. To do that, they’ll all have to forge a temporary truce with Dr. Mixter (Rosemary Dunsmore) and the staff caught in the middle...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season Two, Episode Six of “Chucky.”
The second season of Don Mancini’s “Chucky” is rapidly approaching its finale, which means the pieces are slowly falling into place, and the characters’ paths are converging. It also means that the body count continues to rise as we near the end. This week’s episode, “He Is Risen Indeed,” delivered not one but three notable deaths worth paying tribute to.
Here’s who we lost this week, and why their deaths are important to the show.
Hulk Chucky
This first to fall this week was the heavily muscled Chucky variation, a brute force enforcer that found himself at the sharp end of the blade when confronted by Good Chucky.
“He Is Risen Indeed” sees him under the watch of Sister Ruth (Lara Jean Chorostecki), the devout worshipper who’s mistaken his sentience for divine intervention. That...

Devastated by the loss of their unborn baby, Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) decide to adopt a child. At the orphanage, both feel drawn to a little girl (Isabelle Fuhrman) named Esther, and soon the couple take their new daughter home. But when a dangerous series of events unfolds, Kate begins to suspect that there is something evil lurking behind the child’s angelic exterior.
Although the horror genre is by far my favorite film genre nowadays, the same thing cannot be said for when I was young. As a matter of fact, I was scared to death of practically every horror movie. I remember still to this day, seeing some sort of Chucky parody on some...

No one could ever accuse Don Mancini of being afraid to kill his darlings. Or, in the case of “Chucky,” maim them again and again, if necessary. “He is Risen Indeed” picks up where we left off, with Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) and Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson) discovering Andy (Alex Vincent) alive and not so well as a captive of the Colonel, a cannibalistic variation of Chucky. The Colonel’s arrival coincides with the reveal that the Chucky (Brad Dourif) variations are rapidly diminishing in number, setting up a race against the clock for Chucky Prime and “Chucky” Season 2.
While episode six briefly touches on the previous episode’s events, it’s more interested in laying out the groundwork for the second season’s home stretch. “He is Risen Indeed” brings Andy and Kyle (Christine Elise) more firmly back into the fold, though neither is aware of the other’s whereabouts.

Vampirism has been used as a metaphor for various kinds of addiction in several films over the years, like The Addiction (1995) and Larry Fessenden’s Habit (1995). There are just so many ways to compare creatures of the night who need to drink blood to survive to humans’ many unhealthy addictions. What would happen if a vampire decided to try and kick their habit of drinking blood? Filmmaker Blaine Thurier (Teen Lust) poses this question in his new film Kicking Blood and the answer is captivating.
Written by Thurier and Leonard Farlinger, and directed by Thurier, Kicking Blood premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2021. The film stars Alanna Bale as Anna, a vampire who likes to read books and works the overnight shift in a library, and Luke Bilyk (Adams Testament) as Robbie, a messy alcoholic whose life is falling apart.

"Kicking old habits... can be deadly." LevelFilm in Canada has unveiled the official trailer for a Canadian indie horror drama titled Kicking Blood, about a female vampire who tries to give up blood and become human again. This first premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year. When Anna, a centuries old vampire, watches Robbie, a charming but reckless young man, recover from his alcoholism, she decides to quit blood and restore her humanity. The filmmakers state that they were inspired to update the vampire mythology - explaining more: "the idea of being immortal and addicted and you have to live in darkness. You can’t see the sunlight and you have no soul, and would there be just the tiniest spark left to compel you to try to recover from your addiction and reconnect with your soul in the end." Kicking Blood stars Alanna Bale, Luke Bilyk, Benjamin Sutherland,...

"There's no one here!" Saban Films has released an official trailer for the indie supernatural horror film The Toll, heading straight-to-vod in March this year. This was originally to premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. Described as "supernatural terror and spine-tingling suspense", this is one of the latest "ride-sharing horror thriller" films, but not in the usual way as things get creepy only once they arrive. A socially awkward driver and a weary passenger they try to make it to their destination while being haunted by a supernatural threat. By the end of this trailer it's obvious they end up trapped somewhere else. The main cast includes Jordan Hayes, Max Topplin, James McGowan, and Rosemary Dunsmore. This looks a bit strange overall and low quality, but perhaps it has frightening moments. Full trailer below. Here's the first official trailer (+ posters) for Michael Nader's The Toll,...

A rideshare with a giggly geek driver who may be a serial killer. The staggering-through-the-ink-black-woods-with-nothing-but-a-flashlight look and mood of “The Blair Witch Project.” A mystic schlock demon like Candyman, the Slender Man, or the spectral figures from “The Strangers.” A Victrola in the middle of the road, cranking an ancient warbly ditty à la “The Shining.” A cabin full of snowy TV screens out of the “Poltergeist” showroom. Memories of suicide, filicide, and a rape where the victim was blamed…
Each of these elements, ably handled, might exude a concrete scary resonance. But what are they all doing in the same horror movie? You could say that Michael Nader, the writer-director of “The Toll,” jams them together in an original way, striking just the right note of disquieting genre mashup to keep the audience pleasingly off balance. Just what purpose does the Georgia Guidestones serve? To the people who have been to Elbert County in the state of Georgia to see them, what exists there are six granite slabs with inscriptions. Writer and director Jay Ferguson has observed that the writing inscribed on them is very prescriptive. His web series, "Guidestones," will explore possible answers in a 50-episode run.
“They really do seem to offer advice for a 'future' civilization,” says this director. "Perhaps these 'commandments' have come from what the builders presume to be good practices in past civilization building?”
Each episode will have a varying run time from a minute to five each, and, depending on what viewers choose to receive to view, get offered tantalizing clues of the 'truth.' In order to erect this megalithic structure, great planning, labour and cost were required. This series will offer a new delivery device...

I don't know what Canadian filmmakers eat for breakfast, but they seem to excel in making romantic comedies. These are the first ones that come to my mind: Young People Fucking, Love and Magnets and Dodging the Clock. Now, comes Kris Booth's At Home by Myself... with You, a smart film that combines comedy and drama.
Meet Romy Scott (Kristin Booth), a woman who has developed some phobias because of traumatic events in childhood and adolescence. She's afraid of the storm, getting outside, kissing, lobsters and opening boxes. As a result of that, she's never left her apartment since she was 24 years old. In order to pay her bills, this woman from Toronto works in her apartment as a self-employed travel agent. Moreover, Romy seeks the help of either of her neighbours - Erin (Shauna MacDonald) and Bessie (Rosemary Dunsmore) - to perform tasks like opening boxes for her.

Will that guy manage to get this girl outside of her apartment?

Lesbian pregnancy is one of the queer community’s time-honored clichés. The subject (and the stereotype) has been covered in everything from The L Word to a glut of so-so Lgbt films (see: Tick Tock Lullaby, Goldfish Memory) to mainstream TV’s favorite “very special episodes.”
It was therefore almost shocking to find one of the most original, inventive and entertaining lesbian films of recent days in The Baby Formula. While premised on a lesbian pregnancy, the film is really about parenthood, family, and, more broadly, love.
Framed realistically (with just a pinch of sci-fi speculation tossed in), with truly excellent performances by both leads and the strong ensemble cast, it deserves a place on every queer parent’s watch list.
We begin with a close-up shot of two women snuggling on a porch. A documentary director and her camera crew look on, rapt. “Athena wants to have my baby,...

You heard that At Home by Myself... with You unfortunately had a theatrical limited to Toronto thanks to most of Canada's bunch of culturally colonialized owners of movie theatres. If you didn't have the chance to see this indie film from Kris Booth in Toronto, you can catch it on The Movie Network (or its affiliated channels) provided that you have it in your cable package.
Synopsis:
Romy Scott (Kristin Booth) is afraid of lobsters, closed boxes, kissing, and storms. But her biggest fear is of going outside because every time she does, something bad happens. Film review: 'Breaking the Surface'
This is an athlete's biography that is surprising in its stark, true portrayal of an unhappy life marked with flashes of joy.
"Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story" is the tale of the Olympic diver who pushed himself to become one of the world's great competitors. It has the earnest ring of truth and draws the viewer into the sympathetic, all-too-human journey of a young man who made some unwise choices.
The film begins with Louganis (Mario Lopez) standing on the diving board at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. As he jumps, his head is gashed when he hits the board, plunging him into a series of flashbacks that frame this original telefilm.
The diver's youth is covered, as we follow his struggle in realizing that he is gay and dealing with reactions to that revelation, and later, his courage in facing his HIV-positive status. The reactions of friends and fellow athletes is treated both realistically and sympathetically, and the ugliness of a partner's portrayal is dealt with frankly.
Central to the story is that no punches seem to be pulled when it comes to the relationship between Louganis and his father, Pete Michael Murphy). That any kind of love could flourish from this relationship is a powerful, life-affirming element of the story -- without excessive, cloying sentiment. Murphy is powerful as the father who wants to find a way to love his adopted son, but keeps him -- and others -- away with a wall of seething anger.
Lopez's Louganis comes across as a fully dimensional character who gave way to anger and obsession at times but who always kept his good heart.
